Masters of the Universe is a 1987 fantasy film directed by Gary Goddard, inspired by the Mattel toy line, Masters of the Universe.
The film was released in US cinemas on 7 August 1987, while in Italy the cinema distribution took place in a rather limited manner in April 1990.
Director Gary Goddard had previously attempted to make a film based on DC Comics' New Gods, but the project fell through. When he was entrusted with the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe franchise, he managed the film in such a way as to pay homage to the Jack Kirby comics that he had failed to adapt. Skeletor, for example, has attitudes and an appearance reminiscent of Darkseid, while the cosmic key and the space tunnels are a reference to the Mother Box and the Boomduct. The aesthetic of the film is also very reminiscent of Jack Kirby's style. Although according to some critics and some fans, Goddard would have used The Masters of the Universe as a pretext to realize his project that no one had produced for him, in reality the film itself was not literally a reworked Fourth World, but the intent was to make the film a tribute to Jack Kirby. Il film è uscito nei cinema statunitensi il 7 agosto 1987, in Italia invece la distribuzione nei cinema è avvenuta in maniera piuttosto limitata nell'aprile 1990.
Il regista Gary Goddard aveva precedentemente tentato di realizzare un film basato sui Nuovi Dei della DC Comics, ma il progetto non andò in porto. Quando gli venne affidato il franchise di He-Man e i dominatori dell'universo, gestì il film proprio in modo da omaggiare i fumetti di Jack Kirby che non era riuscito ad adattare. Skeletor, per esempio, ha degli atteggiamenti e un aspetto che ricordano Darkseid, mentre la chiave cosmica ed i tunnel spaziali sono un richiamo alla Scatola Madre e al Boomdotto. Anche l'estetica del film ricorda molto lo stile di Jack Kirby. Nonostante secondo alcuni critici e alcuni fan, Goddard avrebbe usato I dominatori dell'universo come pretesto per realizzare quel suo progetto che nessuno gli aveva prodotto, in realtà il film in sé non fu letteralmente un Quarto Mondo rielaborato, ma l'intento fu quello di rendere il film un tributo a Jack Kirby. This was the first movie i ever saw in the theaters as a little kid back in the 80's. Batman 1989 was the second. Man, i miss the 80's. My only regret was not being born in the 1970's. 😊 but at least i was old enough to enjoy the end of the 80's and early 90's.
