I just love how passionate you are about bloodlines and localities. You’re essentially ensuring these animals from specific localities don’t die out. Also, this channel deserves WAY more subs.
I don't know if you see yourself as such, but you are truly one of the most under-appreciated (at least here on YT) storytellers of our hobby. You have gathered *so much* truly invaluable lore -- about the animals & their histories; about herpetoculture and its history; about the influential OGs of our hobby and their stories. I hope you never stop making content that imparts that lore. It may never have the mass appeal or the views of a Snake Discovery video, but for some of us the stories you tell and the information you provide is truly priceless. Thank you for all you do.
Thank you for your kind words. We never want to stop making content about D/SD's and we're working on the vision for the future of our channel in order to do just that.
Very interesting. I just got a 50% SD Marble from Paul Ryan (marble US exporter). His dad is a 50% SD Marble with karompa bloodline that Paul bought directly from Karsten Wollner. Always a nice thing when we acquire an animal that we can track down the lineage.
@@janw491 haha, there’s plenty more to be had! I’m sure it will all start sounding familiar if you watch enough of them. Feel free to call us if you ever have a question.
@@ReachOutReptiles careful what you ask for!! I don’t own any reptiles just chickens that act like T Rex’s but I’m fascinated by all the snake genetics. I found you through Snake discovery. Keep up the great work, it’s early days but you got it ‼️🇨🇦
I totally agree, i literally fell into the world of sd retics. I was actually shopping for a green tree python after 10 or r 15 years out of the hobby when i spotted super dwarfs for sale on pets4homes. I'd never heard of super dwarf before, I'd seen dwarfs and i bought one straight away. I got a 62.5% and i got her really cheap, she was £100/$150. I found out who bred her and managed to find out her exact lineage so i got a really good deal. She's 62.5% Kayuadi, 6.25% Jamp, dh albino anery aka het purple snow. The man i bought her from wasn't particularly forthcoming at first but i asked him if he could tell me her exact lineage and he put me in touch with her breeder directly. She's a beautiful girl with a lovely temperament and I'll be breeding her next year if she's ready. I was lucky though, many people buy a snake thinking it's superdwarf when it's a mainland.
I'm researching the breeder that I'm gonna buy from by watching this video!! You've educated me, which is the fastest way to convince me I need something. Lol. Thanks!
Awesome! I got my SD pure Tombolongan from Karsten btw! unfortunately, he got only Tombolongan and Selayer in his possession.. no other dwarf localities :/ I hope we have a branch of Reach Out Reptiles in Europe in the near future :D love you guys!
I may have missed it. Is there a way (through breeding/lineage/locality/etc.) to predict the estimated size of a super dwarf? Say my hope is to find one on the smaller size…?
You were right for asking, but your question certainly reveals what a novice herp person you must be. BTW, just in case you were wondering, these animals have scales and are ectothermic.
Thank you for sharing all your information. I recently attended a reptile show and I am not familiar with all the morp terminology and abbreviations. I was wondering if you could break it down for me. So my new snake is labeled: Super Dwarf Het Anery Ph Albino/G-Stripe (25% Kalatoa, 12.5% Selayer I'm confused on super dwarf some sites say they are the 4-6 ft Some sites say they are the reticulates from Kalatoa What does each part mean: Super dwarf - Het - Anery- Ph Albino G-Stripe Kalatoa
There are a number of our videos you can watch to get into more detail on each of these traits (you can search them by name on our channel when you have time- like Kalatoa and Selayer), and Clint's Reptiles also did a great video on Super Dwarf Retics as pets, but here's a summary: To be considered a Superdwarf, your animal would need to be at a minimum 50% from one of the SD islands (like Kalatoa). To be considered a Dwarf, it could include Dwarf Island locality blood (like Selayer, the largest of the dwarves). But it would still need to be at least 50% total. Yours is 25%SD + 12.%Dwarf= 37.5% total. This is considered a mainland, or full sized, reticulated python, and should not ethically be listed as a Superdwarf by the seller. You wouldn't be able to predict that the adult size will be any smaller than any other Retic you might buy with those low %'s. SO while a pure Kalatoa from the island typically gets 6-7', with some animals being as large as 9-10'- that really only applies to one of the grandparents of your animal. As for the genetics- it is a normal, or wild type animal. If correctly represented by the seller, then it should carry the mutation for Anery- but not as something you can see, since it's recessive. You would need to breed it to make Anery babies. It has a possibility of carrying the mutation for Albino and Striped pattern, but again, you would need to breed for that to see it in the babies. This info is just based on what was given in your comment, so take it with a grain of salt. I hope that helps!
Thanks for the information, really helping me work this all out! I've read that males can get a little unpredictable around breeding seasons, im looking for a pet and not to breed, but i do have other male python species in the house, so is this behavior an issue or something thats been blown up out of proportion? Ultimately I just want a snake thats chilled and will hang put with me and the tv in the evenings!
You want a snake that's chilled? To what temperature? Aren't you concerned that it might develop some kind of upper respiratory ailment? Or were you intending for it to go into hibernation?
It's too bad retics are completely illegal in Florida. Because Burmese pythons took over, now giant species are banned. I'd love to have a super dwarf retic...
@@JohnSmith-pw1gf what clutch is yours from? SD crosses are selectively bred for size, which is an art and a process that takes time, resulting in differently sized offspring each generation. At least, this is the way it should be. Many breeders see the Superdwarf label as just something to make it easier to sell their snakes.
With all due respect if I’m just looking for a dwarf or super dwarf retic. Where would be a good place to look? I don’t wanna spend 6 grand on a snake from some crazy bloodline. I just want a snake that will make me happy
