  • Dr Jawed Qureshi presents elastic curve, deflected shape or form of beams and frames.
    • structural mechanics
Deflected shapes in beams and frames describe how these structures bend or deform when subjected to loads. Think of a beam as a long, horizontal plank or a frame as a connected network of beams. When you put weight or force on them (like a person walking on a bridge), they flex or curve. This bending is the deflected shape.
Imagine a diving board when someone jumps on it; it sags downward. That's the deflected shape. It's important because it helps engineers ensure structures don't bend too much, causing safety issues.
Beams typically deflect in a gentle curve. If you add more weight, the curve becomes more pronounced. Frames, being interconnected, have more complex deflected shapes. Engineers use math and physics to predict and control these deflections, ensuring structures stay within safe limits.
So, deflected shapes are like the way a diving board bends when you jump on it, and engineers use calculations to make sure buildings and bridges bend just the right amount to keep us safe.

Roller supports don't prevent horizontal movements only. They restrain movement perpendicular to their placement. For example, a frame has a horizontal member connected to a wall, and the end condition is roller. In this case, roller support will allow the vertical movement, but it will not allow horizontal movement.

Yes, absolutely right. Roller supports prevent movement in direction normal to their placement. Thanks for the comment.

Thank you so much Sir. This was very informative. Which resources would you recommend, I am preparing for my Certificate in Structural Behaviour with IStructE. Thank you

Thanks for kind comments. I recommend using the book, “Understanding Structural Behaviour” by David Brohn. The book is about qualitative analysis.

Dear Dr Jawed, Thank you very much for your sharing. Can I ask one please, with pin support resist only Horizontal and Vertical at support and free rotation at support but in reality as steel warehouse I saw most structural Engineers provide pin support to steel column? But in reality the column is not allow to rotate at all? Can you help explain please? 🙏🙏🙏

Having a pin support is a modelling assumption. In reality, all columns and beams will take some moment, but that will be far less than their moment capacity (ability to take moment). In pinned joints or supports, there will always be a gap to allow rotations, but remember rotations will be really very small.
