    Israel can’t invade and hold Lebanon. It just honestly doesn’t have a large enough man power to fight in by inch village by village mountainous terrain against 100k dug in, well armed, battle hardened troops fighting on their home turf and maintain the occupation of West Bank and Gaza.
    Israel really can’t afford to lose 20% of their young men considering their low birth rate on a mission that might not even work.

      Thankfully the total amount of shells America alone has supplied to Ukraine and Israel totals less than 10% of their reserve with more made every day and a new heavy production has been made in the U.S and the U.K has also stepped up shell production, I don't know about France and Germany's production but the long and short of it is, don't worry. There is still plenty more to dish out of needed, and that production is with the western nations in a peace-time economy. If and when it kicks off proper, war time production will ramp up massively.
      Funnily enough, a lot of those worrying about the draft will be surprised to find themselves shoved into production and supply roles with very few seeing even distant smoke of combat.

      @@arthas640Short answer: yes. Regardless of what casualty numbers would have you think, Israel’s doctrine of warfare in urban settings points to use of more precise munitions such as missiles and smart bombs. UGBs and artillery are used when called upon by ground forces for less precise strikes on confirmed enemy combatant locations or fixed strategic positions that are confirmed empty but could later be utilized by enemies if left available. Otherwise they use more precise means to try to minimize civilian casualties and avoid potential friendly fire. How successful they are in that effort is subject to context, sources of information, chosen comparative conflicts, and debate.

      Israel is not from the US.
      They will give more than they get and they don't care about 'freeing' the
      country and rebuilding it.
      If the US was willing to be mean in Afghanistan they would have wiped out the Taliban (yes, yes the US wasn't always an angel in Afghanistan but they genuinely tried to limit collateral damage and build up the population to defend themselves).
      You can bet if some town is known to have insurgents... Israel won't let it be a town for long - they won't simply target the insurgents when they're travelling or take out the specific building with the leader.

      The video's conclusion makes no sense.. Simon claims Hezbollah will clearly start the war, then proceeds to explain it is because they have the capability to overwhelm the IDF's missile defense! Or is he suggesting Israel can stop them from firing missiles? They didn't manage it in 2006, and are unlikely to succeed before Hezbollah retaliates.
      After spending the whole video underlining how a war in Lebanon would be much harder than what was faced in Gaza. The final claim is that Israel will clearly achieve in Lebanon what they failed to achieve in Gaza!

    Thank you Simon and the Warographics team for this really excellent and balanced look at the situation. I live in northern Israel and this is such a terrifying situation. It’s hard to have any hope. The leadership of Hezbollah are insane and willing to pay any price to destroy as many Israelis as possible, and meanwhile our PM is a criminal motivated only by his own self-preservation, an incompetent and dangerous politician, and rapidly bringing Israel and the whole region to destruction. I wish there was a way out. The Israeli political opposition has been trying to get Netanyahu out of power for years before 7.10, but the situation is only getting worse.
    But as grim as it is, you really did an excellent job laying out the situation, and even as an Israeli there was a lot in here that I didn’t know previously. This is the kind of informative, in depth journalism we need but is unfortunately very rare right now. I only wish people with the power to stop the conflict were willing to see the truth that’s been laid out so clearly here.

    One correction: Israel’s willingness to defend itself with overwhelming force, regardless of the cost, is not a feature of “current Israeli leadership”. • @100500daniel
      @100500daniel 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +17

      That's unlikely. In 2006 Hezbollah couldn't really attack Israel head on since it was weaker than Hamas was in 2023.
      Based on the current war in which Hezbollah tried to infiltrate Israeli territory and failed each time, and on the fact that Israel destroyed Hezb tunnels that go into Israel in 2018, it's much more likely Hezbollah will draw Israeli forces into southern Lebanon rather than going on the offensive. They have tunnels inside southern Lebanon, they don't really have any hiding spots inside evacuated northern Israel

      @cib3r_ 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +13

      While I do enjoy Simon’s content as a general independent-news source of opinion, you would be a fool to think Simon is impartial or unbiased.
      While he does a great job at turning down the bias knob especially when discussing details (hence why I enjoy his content), there’s still underlying impartiality that steers the overall trajectory of his analyses from premise to conclusion.
      An example of this in this video can be heard right at the start at 0:32, when he quickly states matter-of-factly without a pause: “The militant _terror_ organization, Hezbollah…”
      I typically do my best to ignore hottakes like this when I’m taking in his content, but to go into discussion about why I believe a statement like that casts a dull shadow of bias: Hezbollah is denoted a terror organization by primarily Western governments and Israel, and he’s repeating that sentiment without taking a lot of time to analyze what it means exactly to be labeled a terror organization and if the label is truthful. Are they a terror organization because they carry out terrorist attacks? Well, you’d be hard pressed to find any terror attack that Hezbollah carried out. Primarily, their involvement is summarized in warfare with Israel. These are not terror attacks so much as they are just military-on-military war and border skirmishes. They’ve certainly never done anything of the stereotypical terror sort you’d imagine when you think of ISIS or Al Qaeda where they have a theological agenda to spread and attempt to spread it by means of operating far outside of their border and/or targeting unsuspecting civilian populations.
      Are they a terror organization because they target civilians in surprise attacks? While you can maybe argue that point for a group like Hamas (which is a questionable argument because it doesn’t take into account the conditions Israel as the illegal occupying government set on Gaza, but that’s a different topic), Hezbollah has never in its history targeted Israeli civilians EXCEPT as a quid-pro-quo response to Israel targeting Lebanese civilians - which is a modus operandi of Israel to pressure its enemies to cease. Even then, they often targeted civilian areas that were mostly vacant with civilian causalities that can be counted on one hand - the same cannot be said about Israel which targeted populated villages knowing they are populated, but again that’s their modus operandi.
      Are they a terror group because they want to spread theological rule? Again, you’d be hard pressed to find anything of the sort in Hezbollah’s history. While they do carry an Islamic banner, they haven’t really tried to spread Islamic rule - not even within their own country Lebanon, in which they go into elections just as any other political party.
      Are they a terror organization because they have an Islamic flag? Well, if having a theological flag is enough to designate you a terror organization, then Israel should be designated one too, but it is not.
      Are they a terror organization because they are a militarized non-state group? Well, the Wagner group is a militarized non-state group. They’re largely not viewed as a terror organization.
      Or are they a terror organization because they disagree frequently with Israel? Bingo. So then the question is: are they really a terror group? Or are they only designated a terror group because it makes politics convenient?

Israel is far better fortifying its northen border, and keep striking from the air when required. Blinded by victory. Both sides seem confident that they will win and that any costs required to obtain that victory are worthwhile. It is difficult to see peace having a chance in these scenarios. Anyone who has watched William Spaniel's TH-cam videos on Ukraine's conflict knows about lines on maps. In short, each side's willingness to fight can be illustrated by a line on a map that represents their expected outcome in a conflict. Each side in the war has their own lines, and the disagreement between those lines is the space both sides settle via conflict. If those lines are the same, then there is no disagreement on the outcome, and both sides can negotiate a peaceful settlement. In the case of Israel and Hezbollah, those lines may as well be in different universes. Both sides expect to take heavy losses, and both sides expect to break the enemy's resolve. Both sides see the other's existence as an existential threat to their own survival. Not only is peace in these circumstances as likely a mid-summer blizzard in Miami, but it is also just about as welcome. I certainly hope for peace. Surely enough people have died already in this conflict. But I cannot see how anything short of a miracle will achieve a bloodless peace, and I don't believe in miracles.

    Lots of good stuff here. However, if I may, a few points worth considering. Israeli intelligence got the Hamas raids wrong, the immediate IDF response was equally flawed so lets not go overboard on how effective these agencies are. Also the impact of the war so far on Israel's economy seems to have been largely ignored. America is said to have decided to end the Vietnam war as they could not afford it anymore. Much like Britain withdrawing from America in the war of Independence. Finally, and most worrying, Israel has nuclear weapons. If a war against Hezbollah goes very, very wrong Israel might use its nuclear arsenal, the Samson option. There are enough right wing extremists in the Israeli cabinet to seriously consider this.

      The United States left the Vietnam war because the media turned on the military, as they have done every major conflict since. It's the reason we are absolutely vulnerable anywhere that is not American soil. We can't stomach war. Most have never seen it. We haven't grown up having relatives die or schools bombed and so on. The vast majority of the American population is completely disassociated with any war that's ever happened. When they hear or see details they're appalled. That's in contrast to nations paying families for any terrorist that killed someone, and a population sold on a religious ideology and absolutely cohesive in their jihad. This is all moot because we all know what this ends with: Israel wins. Either the win outright or the United States eliminates hezbollah. Or greatly reduces it. For better or worse, there is no scenario in which Israel is allowed to fall. Period.

    One important point which I think wasn't properly framed is that from the Israeli perspective, the Hezbullah situation can essentially only get worse - that we should've gone for it back in 2010 when they were already breaking the ceasefire terms and building up artillery south of the unifil line, and that the more we wait the worse it gets, meaning that as devestating as a war would be right now, if we get "peace" for 5 more years it will only get worse. I feel like there also wasn't enough emphasis on the fact that currently tens of thousands of Israeli citizens are living away from their northern homes: how much longer can this be allowed to continue?
    I hope that somehow the war with Hezbullah never comes, but very sadly, it might have to happen sooner rather than later.

      In 2006, the Palestinian minister of the interior, Said Saim, used the term during an interview at Al-Alam television to refer to common political goals among Arabs in opposition to those of Israel or the United States. Noting the large number of Palestinian refugees in Syria, Saim stated, "Syria is also an Islamic Arab country and is also targeted by the Americans and the Zionists. Hence, we see in Syria, Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas an axis of resistance in front of these pressures."[38]
      The term "axis of resistance" was used as early as August 2010.[39] After two years, Ali Akbar Velayati, senior advisor for foreign affairs to Iran's supreme leader, used the term and said:
      The chain of resistance against Israel by Iran, Syria, Hezbollah, the new Iraqi government, and Hamas passes through the Syrian highway... Syria is the golden ring of the chain of resistance against Israel.[40]
      The phrase was used again in August 2012 during a meeting between Syrian president Bashar al-Assad and the secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Saeed Jalili, regarding the Syrian civil war.[41] Velayati said:
      What is happening in Syria is not an internal issue, but a conflict between the axis of resistance and its enemies in the region and the world. Iran will not tolerate, in any form, the breaking of the axis of resistance, of which Syria is an intrinsic part.[40]
