  • This video will compare $20 Strip Light vs $200 Strip Light.
    The two Strip Lights I am going to compare today are the Philips Hue, which needs a network bridge and a generic $20 Strip Light.
    Starting price for the generic strip lighting is $20s and the Philips Hue range will be around $200.
    If we take a look at the $20 strip light first. The box contains the RGB Control Box. This control box allows us to power the strip lighting and it also allows us to use the infrared remote control to change the color of the LED strip.

    The hue lightstrip has a warm and cool led next to the coloured RGB one so it is able to produce accurate white colours compared to the cheaper one. That’s what you saw when you had it set to red.

      Isn't that quite stupid that the white led lights up when you increase the brightness of rgb colours on the strip? I get that it makes it brighter, but you also lose some of the qualities of pure RGB lighting when adding white light.

      @@monsterGLL That doesn't entirely make sense. A warm white LED is just white light with yellow light. AN accurate orange light is just green light with red light in the correct proportion. The only reason I can see as to why they would add these side LED lights is because it makes the light seem brighter than it actually is (at the cost of losing color accuracy and even monochromaticity since it adds white light)

      The reason why Philip's hue components are so expensive is not the material/quality. It's the software. They've probably spend a huge amount of money developing an app as easy as it is right now. And to be honest. It works great, the app is really good.

    • @tolbiii

      Noname I agree. It’s why I switched over to exclusively using Philips hue over the cheaper brands. All the knock off apps are so bad. I couldn’t stand it. The Philips hue ecosystem is nice. A few problems with this review. The remote has arrows on it which you never used. They give you far more control of color instead of the push button colors. You can also find your favorite colors and set them to the DIY buttons. One addition though, you can buy a wifi or Bluetooth enabled connector to replace the regular connector, then you’ll have a free color picker app just like the HUE version. I bought 4 spools, 40 meters for $25, and added added Bluetooth for $5. Not as amazing as the HUE, but insanely cheap.

    You don't necessarily have to pay for those extra settings, there is an open source API for the hue if you want to control it more specifically, or you could use the version 1 of the app that had the programming, or on iOS (and I'm sure probably on Android too, but I don't use it), the integration with the home system provides those settings that are missing from version 2 of the control app compared to version 1 - it seems that Philips decided that since the home automation on the mobile OS-s also provides for it, they don't want to duplicate the functionality. Functions includes sunrise effects etc.

The other is whether the Hue has been replaced with an updated version and same with the less expensive version. I ask because I have bought inexpensive led bulbs (60) for various applications, however the leds’ themselves started burning out in less than six months, flickering, etc..., essentially defeating the advantages of purchasing led bulbs. Are they not supposed to last long, like 15,000 to 30,000 hours?

    Can you still put it on and off with a remote by Philips hue??

    • @cephalonzero3504
      @cephalonzero3504 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can buy a remote and configure it with Philips Hue. Remote have 4 buttons (on, off,+,-) but you can assign effects and scenes, whatever by clicking buttons multiple times or holding.
      I have 5 different light scenes, blinking, dim +/-, off. At first i was little bit disappointed in those strips, since they cannot have different parts of the strip lighten up as different color.
      However after getting few regular lamps, remote, motion sensor it became more mature and practical thing than a toy, that would be the 15Eur strip.

    Bought the 50$ish one from globe, does the job for what I need, it connects to the same outlet the old one was usins and still can close it with a switch on the wall in the kitchen.
    I switch scene depending of the hour and day automatically via the app.
    The counter is like 19' so one globe strip cover nearly the entire thing while I would had to buy like three Philips hue to cover it all.
    Philips hue would be great but way overpriced. Surely doesn't cost them that much to make, they surely make shitload of profit.
    Will look into a Philips hue strip and light fixture and hub for my computer one when I build my new PC so I can sync them to my games but otherwise meh. Philips hue is overpriced.

    I was too lazy to read through all the comments but there's a free desktop app for Hue on their website that you can download that'll give you extra features like Music, Game and Movie modes. On your phone app you can make what's called entertainment areas which allows you to position the light in the room on the app, enable game/movie mode and whatever is on your screen (monitor connected to the PC running the app) the lights will imitate depending on the position. It's a fairly cool feature to say the least, but you can get near the same effect with cheaper RGBWW lights, an Arduino and a little bit of time to wire it up.

    You cheat by not comparing similar items. The cheap version is rated at IP65 which is no waterproofing and therefore no structural support. Had you gone with the IP67 version, it would undoubtedly have a silicone shield that makes it less flexible, but equally as nice with regards to finish. Your comparison is not fair.

    • @JasonBurnettsProfile
      @JasonBurnettsProfile 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In addition, the Hue lights are what is called RGBWW. They contain both RGB lighting clusters and two isolated white LEDs that are larger. One produces warm white light and one produces cool white light. This is standard with all RGBWW lights. Unfortunately, the HUE lights have a small problem with phosphor contamination--that is to say that some of the color phosphors are excited by the white phosphors creating a tiny and nearly imperceptible color bleed. This can be solved with optics or by using the latest RGBWW chips that create a physical barrier between phosphors to ensure the best possible color replication for the most accurate color. Keep in mind that the HUE lights also use a lot more power even when no lights are lit. They are less flexible (due to their plastic rather than nylon jacket and they cannot be cut at as many locations as a standard strip which can be cut every one or two lights (wherever the copper contacts are exposed).
