  • Anne Duggan, a professor of Fairy-Tale studies, takes us into her world of fairy tales. She uses the evolution of one particular story- Little Red Riding Hood- to give us greater insights into how we view the world around us. By the end, your understanding of fairy tales shall truly be transformed. Dr. Anne E. Duggan is professor of French and chair of the Department of Classical and Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at Wayne State University. Working between the French early modern tale tradition and twentieth- and twenty-first century French fairy-tale film, she is author of Salonnières, Furies, and Fairies: The Politics of Gender and Cultural Change in Absolutist France (2005), and Queer Enchantments: Gender, Sexuality, and Class in the Fairy-Tale Cinema of Jacques Demy (2013). With Cristina Bacchilega, Professor Duggan is co-editor of Marvels & Tales: Journal of Fairy-Tale Studies, and she co-edited with Donald Haase Folktales and Fairy Tales: Traditions and Texts from around the World (4 vols., 2016). This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Wow now I understand why Albert Einstein said: if you want your children to be intelligent read them fairytales and if you want them to be more intelligent read more fairytales

I feel sorry for you. It's really interesting to some people (like me) but I get that knowing you're forced to watch it can kill all interest you might have otherwise had in the topic. Don't let school destroy your curiosity and talent!

So should we still read fairy tales to children?
They are quite scary. I read little red riding hood to my three year old son and he was quite scared, yet wanted to hear the story again the next evening and the evening after that.
I understand that fairy tales have hidden meanings, but are they good for children?

After learning aboit their origins I'm not going to read fairytales to any children o.O

Depends, are you a desert cultist (abrahamist) or a European?
If you wish for your children to get a European understanding of the world, read them these fairy tales. They will think back on them later in life and things might just *click*.

@@robindscarlet9805 I loved fairy tales as a child u don’t have to tell them the whole origin story 😂 but I mean even I remember reading about Hazel and Greta’s cooking the witch even from a young age I don’t even remember someone telling me is just something that I have always known but tbh as children I don’t comprehend stuff like that

There's nothing wrong with children being scared - they enjoy it as long as it's in a controlled environment. I LOVED horror films and fairy tales as a child. Wrapping children up in cotton wool does them no favours at all.

Perhaps the only modern example we have of a masterful storyteller, and eventually his storytelling disciples. Such is why the company, and it’s library of reimagined tales, remains important to this day.
