It’s great to see an interview with a veteran British tank soldier because my late grandfather also served in the British Army in tanks. He was older than the late Captain Perry, born in 1909, and first entering action in North Africa in 1941, fighting in all of the major battles there, before serving briefly in Italy and then from D-Day until VE Day in Northwest Europe. He fought with B Squadron of 5RTR, the Desert Rats, and had an enormous amount of front line combat experience when the war ended. He finished the war as a Sergeant and tank commander. Like Captain Perry, he was wounded several times and carried shrapnel in his body for the rest of his life. Unfortunately he died in the mid 1980’s, when I was still quite a small child, so I didn’t really appreciate what he’d been through or get to have any meaningful conversations with him about his war. Captain Perry’s account helps to give an appreciation of what life was like for men like my grandfather. A great interview, thank you.
What a great guy! You can see him reliving it and he has that little smile that reflects his carefree attitude while in combat, I believe! Unbelievable how sharp he is at that age! Love this guy!! That smile he has over everything his commanders ordered him to do shows what a fearless leader he was and probably a big prankster !! :) Love the part, God I have been stung by a bloody bee with that smile !!! What a soldier and leader this brave man was in the war! He is a treasure !!!!! But you can tell when he is talking about the most serious situations as his usual carefree smile disappears! Loved the Purple Heart story and his souvenir of the War in his ear :) !

What an OUTSTANDING Officer, Gentleman, and Great Human being!!! He should be knighted as a commander who was NOT common ! That smile of his throughout shows how brave he was. ONLY one time during the interview did the smile go away and that was a very bad situation for his men and that is why his smile went away!! His story would make a wonderful movie !!!

Being British myself, it isn’t in our character to be overly emotional. But this remarkable veteran’s commentary and recall of those surely terrifying years, is an inspiration not only to myself, but surely to all generations, and it is deeply moving. He speaks with such clarity and is morally clear regarding the case for a necessary war. His comments on truthfulness and honesty are inspirational - in these confusing times, we can only aspire to the values of this, the greatest of generations.

Reminds me of my father. He was born in 1923, fought in Normandy and died 12 years ago. How sad it is that most of this generation are nearly all gone.
My Dad Canada Pictou Highlanders, (SEAFORTH) in England 1940, Drafted to the 8th Army after Dieppe raid in 42, Back in Canadian Army for Invasion of Holland, i wish he would have told us everything, he was 82 before he said anything, it was so terrible, i know i would not have made it, he passed at 85, i miss him, and the few vets still here, i never thought i would see the day when 3 vets were left in my area last year. l am happy you have some British and Canadian vets on, i watch them all.

Born in Luxembourg 15years after the war, not having to do nazi salutes in a brown shirt and among the first European generation never to live through a war, I am very aware and grateful to all who helped making my world so easy & nice, even those who were forced into it and didn't want to be there. But this guy, I realy love.

My uncle served in British Army during WW2.He told us in a tank turret nothing else. My grandfather served during WW1 in the British Army. I served in USAF.. I salute all who have served in past and present.😊

Things can be a little unpredictable with wounds. One of the foremen, a Mr. Hammonds, that my father worked with at Murry Ohio had a fragment of something inside his heart that he had picked up during WW II. He had recovered and lived a normal life. They did not attempt to remove it. It would have been nice to know what kind of tank or tanks he was in. The British had a rather large number of different kinds. This guy has a vastly better memory than I do.

my dad was a Sherman driver in Geel/ Gheel ( spelling to suit) Belgium, took a rocket in the side that killed the radio op outright. In the last 3 years we have discovered the re enactment etc that the towns folk organize , much praise to them for doing so and to all those who attend both English and German. Would be great to hear from anyone who still lives from then or those whos fathers served in Sherwood Rangers.... mush respect to all who served and still do... Not a job I could do... subd just on the content of this video....lest we forget... all gave some...some gave all...salute.
SRY still exists and has a museum at Thoresby Hall - look for RLNY (Royal Lancers Nottinghamshire Yeomanry) . There is a SRY Association which you can probably find online.
His advice: shoot the first prisoner who puts his hands up! This man is one of the most articulate and interesting of these veterans - and 95 years old!
I love history of this generation. & you do a great job, however I would love to hear a interview from a German soldier’s point of view. Now that is something that no interviewer has done yet for the dominantly English viewers

They learned how to do mass genocide from the Turks killing the Armenian’s however if you want real genocide and real world domination ( 1 that makes nazi’s look like Girl Scouts) look what Stalin did not only before, during & after the war. He forced Ukraine into a state of cannibalism, he sent returning Russian pow’s to die in Siberia. the atrocities that his regime did were far worse than the nazi’s. But the world looked the other way then just as it does today in other parts of the world.

Germans were victims too in a way. Most German soldiers fought hard, bravely and with honour. One quote about the Afrika Korps rings true, 'They brought honour to Germany, when some of their compatriots were bringing dishonour to Germany.'
Itst incredible that he was kicked out of the SAS, for being too rough and tough! Commanders were appointed by the "good old boy!" System and not merit, many times back then! However, beating your boss, in any position, is typically frowned upon!? LoL 😅

My grandfather was part of the 8th armoured. A tank commander of a firefly in the Scots greys..very interesting to hear this.thank you sir
