i am not sure and didnt even do any extensive research on it but as an engineering student i do know that batteries are made up of some pretty highly reactive metals like lithium which simply burns or explodes when exposed to direct contact with the oxygen from the air the explosion is nothin g but a by product from the oxidation reaction just like iron rusting but much much faster as lithium is a highly reactive metal the reaction happens so quickly that the amount of energy has to be converted in to thermal, light and sound energy to get out of the system some reactions suck in energy but this one releases it . its called an exothermic reaction! in short yes it will probably explode anyway as the charge wasnt the thing that caused the explosion in the first place
