EASY (but gross 🤢) WAY TO TELL IF YOUR QUALS ARE MALE OR FEMALE.

  • Finding out if Quail are Male or Female isn't hard...but it sure is Weird! Quail are our smallest homestead animal and they have been a joy since hatching day! We get asked frequently why we choose to raise quail. Half of the reason we raise them is for meat...the other half is we enjoy their beautiful eggs. We hope to have that perfect ratio of males to females in our Pharoah/Coturnix quail covey. Raising quail brings us one step closer to the self sufficient life style we are working towards!

    Nice work y’all. Our friends over at Empty Pockets Farm on IG got Georgia quail not knowing it takes them like 6 months to lay instead of 6 - 8 weeks like coturnix quail. The coturnix you can also tell by their chest. Speckled (black) chest female. Solid (copperish color) male. Love quail!

      @4KidsandaFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      So this is a coturnix crossed with a pharaoh quail. Some of the males are very speckled..but our prettiest females is speckled too😕🤷‍♂️. The vent checking isnt even really bad. We got 4 males...so now the taste test 😊.

      @@4KidsandaFarm Interesting! I was told coturnix quail and pharaoh quail were the same thing. 🤔 And never knew it took some much longer to lay until they told me that. Always learning! 👍🏻👊🏻

      @@WalkerFarmFam there are many variations of colors of the coturnix quail, some can be feather sexed and some cannot. the Jumbo Wild coturnix like we have can be feather sexed like you said about.

    Quail, like chickens need about 16 hours of light to lay. I added a string of warm spectrum rope light to my coop and my chickens and quail have been laying really well. And it looks pretty inside too 🙂

    Are clams happy? :) I am sure you animals are happy you got them food. I thought you could tell by the stripe or freckles on their chest. Clear chest female, was males chest not clear?

      Some we can...this is a quail that has been crossed for its eggs so the feather pattern doesn’t breed true.

  • @HisWayHomestead
    @HisWayHomestead 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think the second one was a male for sure... chest was reddish feathers without speckles

    So my husband and kids love to eat quail, I really like the cage you built for them. My only advice is to only have 1 male in there because they will continue to peck each other’s eyes out and they will start scalping the females, atleast that’s what happened with mine when I had to many boys with the girls. They’re super easy to process and cook.

    Hmm seems like you guys should have bought them dinner before checking them out. Lol I have bob white. Coturnix and texas a&m the first 2 are easy peasy the texas a&m are difficult.

    • @4KidsandaFarm
      @4KidsandaFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol! We buy them dinner every day! 😂 it is a bit invasive but the only way with this cross. We actually caught a few of them crowing so didn’t have to check them at all. How do you like your Texas A and M quail...we looked at those but wanted the blue colored eggs from the pharaoh/coturnix cross.

      @@4KidsandaFarm I'm on my second batch... they are less skittish than the coturnix and way less than the bob white. Good layers.
