    I always love how inept Sharpe looks when he's dueling one-on-one. You can tell that he didn't get fencing lessons or go to a military officers academy. Pretty cool detail actually.

      @LoudaroundLincoln 2 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      Someone in the books does try to teach him proper fencing instead of "brawling with a sword". Can't remember the character who did though.

      I think that one of Sean Bean's best acting moments is the little flinch he gives when he starts fighting Lord Keighley. It clearly takes him by surprise.

    • @DaveDexterMusic

      it's probably more than sean bean couldn't duel and there wasn't much time for choreography, rather than a well-thought detail that reflects the character's upbringing and training

    Stealing your enemy's bayonet and using it to avenge your comrades? That is soldiering!
    Also, I love how every one of Sharpe's climactic fights has him invariably get knocked down, with the enemy's blade at his throat, then the enemy monologues, and Sharpe kills him and monologues.
    Sharpe understands that a stabbing death is a slow one. Plenty of time for monologuing as they bleed out.

      It is kind of a theme in Sharpe. Then again, that theme is that most of Sharpe's opponents were nobles trained in formal swordsmanship while Sharpe rose up through the ranks, learning the sword more as necessity and winning with either underhanded tactics or after "losing."
      In other words, the noble won the fight, but Sharpe understands that "winning" is less important than living.

      Nope. Not even in the books either. He usually has to resort to "gutter fighting" since he's pretty much had no formal saber training. • @Hagashager
      @Hagashager 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He was weilding a turret gun. They are an actual gun from this era but it's unlikely someone like Harper would actually be using one.
      The turret gun is the precursor to the modern Revolver in that it consisted of multiple barrels that had to be loaded separately. The barrels had a specialized cock which could hit a rear pin behind each barrel.
      Unfortunately these guns were over-engineered pieces of garbage, even when well-made. If I recall only certain British nobility only ever used them for sport and in the book I read one of the owners described the Turret gun as "Cantankerous and prone to outbursts."

    • @robhart3451
      @robhart3451 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's a naval 7 barreled gun.
      In the books Sharpe buys it for Harper from a Chandler's shop. Harper is impressed with the gun after seeing it in action at Trafalgar.
      The recoil is so fierce that only the biggest, strongest men could use it. In the books Harper is about 6,5 tall.

    Again and again throughout the SHARPE series, Richard Sharpe fights a number of personal combats and duels. His opponents always give Sharpe a second chance because they're cocky. General Loup did the same thing, instead of skewering Sharpe he takes time to boast at Sharpe. Then Loup makes the mistake of raising his sword point off Sharpe. Sharpe never, never, never gives second chances to opponents who give him a second chance. Sharpe gets up, gets his second wind, overcomes his opponent through ferocity and brute strength more than skill and kills his opponent...hard.
