this was SO HELPFUL OMG!! im in gr11 and im already stressed out about not being good enough when i gotta apply next year OOPS but for some reason this made me a little more relaxed :,)
Same here q_q I'm interested in applying for the Sheridan Honours Bachelor of Illustration. I wish you all luck on your art journeys! I hope we all are able to get into our dream schools eventually :)
Declaration of Independance i am in grade 9 and already thinking... just bc i would really need to improve in the next three years to even think of applying
Wow ! Thank you! I'm 25 and always wanted to peruse animation since I was very young . I honestly felt like I was never going to get there . I've been working up my grades and hoping to get into Sheridan college. This video was very insightful and inspiring , and has helped me with some of my many roadblocks.
I went to the Sheridan open house today! Such an amazing experience!! I’m only a junior in high school, so I still have another year until I need to worry about applying, but it really helped me verify what I need to be working on between now and then. To put it in a short way, I’m super excited to get to work!
As a good ol' Sheridan Anime grad myself, I gotta say this is a very helpful resource and you definitely know your stuff. Congrats on getting in! It has definitely changed since the 2014 applications (we didn't have to submit any animations) so major respect to you and all the others who are already animators right before school starts! Time management and prioritizing is certainly a skill that will be needed all throughout the school and the animation career after, so good to exercise that skill and avoid the last-minute stresses (which I all too often get close to). Best of luck to everyone applying, you can do this! Just keep drawing and be open to learning new things through your pieces - finding new ways to have fun with art and be curious about what you can do along the way. You'll find yourself doing better and better as you grow! (Also, the Sheridan AniJams I'm seeing from the new generations are absolutely amazing! Y'all are great!)
Hey this is amazing! So glad you got in! I go to Sheridan College and I'm trying to get into the Computer Animation course, this is still inspiring to look at!
You are so amazing for making something like this. I am trying to get into different art school ( Interlochen, creative writing) but can't find anything like this, witch is really daunting, I am just all on my own. So, I just wanted to say that this probably means a lot for anyone trying out for Sheridan, or animation in generall.
I love these kinds of things. Young people with skills I only dream of, and those skills are the benchmark to be able to get in somewhere to train to be able to be even better. Amazing. And so beautiful.
Honest disclaimer: I'm only at 0:58. I have a habit of watching videos longer than five minutes in segments, rather than altogether. I hope it doesn't annoy too much if, for now, I just comment on what I've seen.Congratulations on your acceptance, ma'am! I wish you very well in your ongoing studies and your pursuit of your degree.
Girl this is amazing. I love your style so much. I'm planning to apply for Animation in Sheridan in the future (probably in 4 or 5 years). I've always had that dream of doing animation since I was a kid. I started sketching cartoon characters since I was 7 and yeah that whole Disney and Pixar thing has always been a dream to me. Now I'm in Canada doing my Accounting degree, I'm planning to do an animation degree in Sheridan after I finish my current degree (I'm gonna finish probably in 2 years and I wanna work for 1 to 2 years. And I'm gonna prepare for the animation application as well during that time). I'm just wondering do you think it's possible for me to apply according to my condition? I didn't take any art courses in high school but I did learned pencil sketching for a few years when I was young. I also do some watercolour painting during my leisure time. I love animation but I didn't really do a lot of animation drawing and I wasn't trained on that before. (I know it sounds kinda weird, lol) Would you give me any suggestions? Thank you so much :)
aAAA thank you so much!! 😭💖💕💕 And don't worry, it's not weird at all! There's lots of people in the program who have other degrees in science, business, math, etc. I think it depends more on how much you're willing to put into animation (how passionate you are about it and how far you're willing to go for animation) rather than how much experience you have. It's a program that requires you to (almost 😂) love drawing to death (and specifically cartoons or anything animation related). Even if you feel that you lack experience in art, that's ok! A lot of people feel that way, but it's those that put the extra effort into practising that make it out and go to Disney or Pixar :D ✨💪 I'd say if you love drawing to the point you would willingly draw everyday and you genuinely want to improve (not for the sake of getting into Sheridan or to get a job at Disney, but because you enjoy it and you wanna make great art), then ya go for it! You don't even need to find a tutor necessarily (though it's helpful for portfolio), you can improve your art by drawing from/studying art books and watching tutorials :D that's how I learned most of the skills I have today in animation (even at the studio I went to, blue tadpole studio, they made me look at tons of art books from movies, films, artists, studios. Then they told me to draw what I found appealing, and it helped so much. They also recommended me lots of books I read in my own time, like cartoon animation by Preston Blair, the Weatherly guide to drawing animals, Michael Hampton's figure drawing book, etc.) But ya the main ingredients to your answer is passion, perseverance and dedication :) ✨💪💪 best of luck! 💖 Hope that helped!
paluumin Thank you so much sweetie. This is so encouraging for me. I hope you will do well in the future in animation. And yeah enjoy the college life, it’s hard and sometimes stressful, but you’ll enjoy it once you’re in the right program.🥰🥰
Hey there! I am a High School student planning for my future and becoming an Animator. I had roughly 40% idea of what you were saying throughout the video (sorry 😅) but now I know that ART is not just a time passing hobby anymore. This video was super helpful. However, I did get scared when you mentioned Art High School. Now, Loved your personal art pieces! And, I AM A YURI ON ICE FAN TOO!!!!
You are an amazing artist, I never got a chance to do just school for this reason I am still in school I have good grades just have to work so much that sometimes my school suffers, I hope to one day be as good as you ... Never stop drawing your blessed to be so young and good. May the universe keep blessing you.
This video is helpful ALL throughout. You’re incredibly skilled and very fun to watch, if you plan on making more content in the future, I’ll gladly be there to see it :0
This is amazing. I would love to know how much you have improved since being at Sheridan so far. if you are this amazing beforehand i cant wait to see how amazing you are now. would love to see some of your newer stuff too. Amazing
My best ability is colouring, my weakness are perspective drawing. I am focusing on anatomy right now I have 2 years left, I want to work very hard for this.
thank you! You could... But I wouldn't recommend it :0 I think for life drawing, they specifically look for traditional (conte on newsprint). Even for personal piece, it'd be kind of a waste to make all 5 of your pieces digital... You wanna show off the breadth of your skills in personal pieces, so I wouldn't make it all digital unless they're all completely different from each other (like I submitted a digital painting, a digital film, and if I were to submit a third, it'd be like a character sheet, but I didn't because having 3/5 personal pieces being digital just didn't represent the range of my skills well). You can also find more info at 16:20 !
wow this is amazing!! couple of questions if u dont mind? - what app did u use to make your animation?? QuQ - any tips for water color and character design? u seem to be sooooo on top of the game omg thanks!!
thank you! 💕💖💖 1) I did my animation traditionally (on paper), and I scanned them and put them in photoshop or online gifmaker :'D there was another program I used at my studio but like you'd need some next level equipment for that :')) 2) character design tips are just the tips I have in the video :'D for watercolour, keep in mind it's called watercolour, so use water. Experiment with the different variations of intensity and the different effects you can get for watercolour 👌 and most of all, practice :'D I've been doing watercolour (seriously?) for a couple years :'D A lot of it is colour theory as well so you might want to review/study that too 👍 Hope that helps!
Erasing in life drawing is a big nono :'D In life drawing classes and sessions, no one around me ever uses an eraser and I was never taught to use an eraser in life drawing 😂😂 erasing is seen as a waste of time and a sign of lack of confidence by some people 👀 it took a lot of practice for sure, but eventually you'll learn to draw one (1) big line for the leg (for example), and just keep going (doesn't matter if it's perfect or trash :'))). You can see some of my current life drawings on my realism account on Instagram: @/nimuulap to get an idea of my linework! I try to make my lines confident and in as little strokes as possible :'D (and I never use erasers in life drawing unless it's a tiny practice drawing in my sketchbook 😂) However, if you have a really good life drawing and you lowkey messed up this oNE line that's not supposed to be in a certain spot, and it's a vERY small change... You can lowkey erase it 👀 and submit it 😂 but just keep in mind they can tell if you erased or not :'))
Oh my god my art is nowhare as good as yours how am I gonna get into a animation colladge?? In like years and years Edit I can't draw hands or a smooth animation- wow
my daughter is wanting to take animation and i told her about the sheridan program...she's in grade 11 now and i suggested she watch yours and others portfolio vids! she's pretty good at the hand drawings, but i think she could use some life drawing practice-any suggestions?? congrats on your admission, though a few years ago now!!
Hello! For life drawing, the best way to get better at it is to do it a ton! I did around 3 hours of life drawing a week when I was your daughter's age, sometimes I did more, and these were all at in-person studios. Depending on where you live, you can see if there's drop-in life drawing available near you. If covid is a barrier, I believe there's a few online zoom sessions, but I'm not sure where (I sometimes see people advertise it on instagram). You can also check out line of action (free website) and gesdraws party on youtube. As for the technical aspects of life drawing, I took kinesiology in high school which helped me understand how certain joints of the body worked, and I studied Proko's anatomy videos. I also read and did studies of Michael Hampton's figure drawing book (as mentioned in the video), and The Weatherly Guide to Drawing Animals. Hope that helps!
I am also planning to apply to sheridan next year ,and have no idea where to start my drawings are not that great too ,any pointers for starting from square one would be good.
Question about the figure drawing section. Conte and large newsprint are not available in my country. Can I still use other media for the figure drawing section?
As long as it looks like conte and newsprint, sure 👌 but you will probably struggle with line quality, so I would still try to get it somehow if possible (even if the shipping will take months, from what I've heard). It will also be hard to adjust to conte and newsprint if you get into the program, because that's all we use for the first 2 years and being comfortable with conte and newsprint will take out a lot of the stress and frustration you might feel in first year (a lot of people either really didn't like life drawing or really liked it, and I think having used conte for a couple years prior made life drawing class more enjoyable for me)
Where do u look for the topic portfolio at 0:15 (application portfolio assessment)? Are they supposed to send you a email of the specific drawings they are looking for that year?
Once you've registered/applied to the college program (this is the non-portfolio part where you input your personal and legal information), you will have made a Sheridan account. If you're in high school right now, your guidance counselor should run you through the registration process. Through your Sheridan account, you will be able to see the programs you've selected to apply for, and there will be a link to "additional requirements", where they will release the official requirements. You also view your scoresheet there as well, though they send an acceptance email usually (but I didn't get one for the requirements). In short, it's on your Sheridan access account, and I heard this year's requirements will be released on October 5 ✨👌
Every summer Sheridan has a few classes for portfolio prep (e.g. character design, storyboard, life drawing, etc.) which are taught mostly by first animation teachers. I believe sign ups being in March or April... If you pause the video, you'll see that I don't encourage you to go to national portfolio day because Sheridan Animation is never there (they haven't shown up in the past couple of years) because their own open house is usually the week after or some time close. They do portfolio reviews at the open house. However if you want to check out other programs other than Sheridan animation, then by all means, go to national portfolio day.
paluumin thx for the reply also do you have to apply first and then they’ll give you the list of required things for you portfolio? Cause I haven’t started mine yet.
@@prabh.k.chahal8571 yes you have to apply first in order to get access to the official requirements (which are coming out on October 5 I believe) 👌 the requirements will be available on your Sheridan access account
paluumin okay thankyou, do you think I’m a little late on starting the portfolio or on time ? cause like you said in the video (hustle) , also you are on your 1st semester in the program ?
@@prabh.k.chahal8571 if you literally just decided you wanna apply for Sheridan, then I mean... You could theoretically still pull it off :0 usually the start line for a lot of people is September, you'd just have to work harder to make up for the month you missed. If you've been thinking about what to do for your personal piece, characters and whatnot, then all that's left is just doing it 💪✨ which, if you have enough perseverance and determination, you should be able to get done in 5 months :) everyone has different working habits, just depends how badly you want it and how much time you're willing to sacrifice 👌
i'm really happy to find this video bc your art is AWESOME and this was soooo helpful! but i have a question... do you know where i could get guidance and advices in the process of creating a portfolio? for example, you had contact with sheridan alumni and teachers, but since i'm international and have zero contacts from the animation world, i'm wondering where i could get help and critiques! thank you for reading
Hi! There's a Facebook group for Sheridan Hopefuls and there's also a discord! A few current students are on there (in addition to other people who are planning to apply) :D Hope that helps!
hey! As a international student may I ask if is there any 1 year short program at sheridan Animation ? And if it's there any online course that you would recomend to better your skills? :3
hi there! First of all I really like your style of drawing!!:) I have two questions to ask... is there a specific date to release the portfolio topics(? and can we prepare the portfolio(exclude the 5 personal work) at home? Thanks!!
Thank you so much! 💖❤️💕 They released the requirements around October for my year I think... Just keep checking their website (or go to your access Sheridan, and check additional requirements everyday). You have to be registered to apply in order to view the official/final requirements. And yeh you can definitely do any of the requirements at home! There's no rule you can't LMAO 😂 you can draw on paper anywhere, I went to a studio just so I could get feedback from teachers as soon as I was done working 👌 but I also did a lot of my work at home!
This is such a good video! I actually never heard about this school which I find kind of crazy but now I am definitely interested! Right now I am in sophomore year and have been really focused on doing animation in the future so this video over all really helps. I saw that you reply to almost every comment so hopping that you see this but what would you recommend me to start working on right now? Portfolio wise? Since I am 15 I got a couple of years till I apply so really any tip helps!
Glad my video helped! I covered most of my tips in my video, but when I was 15, I started to focus on gearing my style towards Western animation. So I did a lot of character designs, studied a lot from various art books, and did a ton of perspective practice :) I went to a studio and the teachers there were very helpful in helping me find the flaws in my art and work on fixing them. Improve your draftsmanship, do life drawing, take classes, improve your sense of design, read, be inspired by stories, etc. 👍 Nothing too special 😂 this is just what I did back then!
Hii I've been thinking to apply to this college since it looks intresting and THANKFULLY ur vid appeared on my home page IM RLLY RLLY thankful for this tips of urs to get in and how it's like in that college hehe but like are they really against anime artstyle....bcs most of my arts are anime artstyle.....
Hi! They're not "against" it, we refer to a lot of animes in lessons and classes (lots of Ghibli, Akira, cowboy bepop, etc.). There's also a ton of students who have amazing anime styles and use it for all their assignments, and there's nothing wrong with that! But the key thing to understand is that you're applying to a western animation school, where most of the curriculum is based on western animation. This means when they evaluate your admission portfolio, they will be evaluating you based off their knowledge of western animation. They expect you to be able to draw various body types, show volume/form, show personality and story, show variety, show exaggeration, etc. So while you can draw anime for your portfolio, just remember to keep the key things people look for in western animation. For me, my style was largely anime too, but all of my faces looked the same and all my characters looked the same. I wanted to be able to adapt to as many styles as possible, which is why I "changed" my style. I wouldn't say I forcefully changed it, I just discovered that there's more than anime out there and I was really inspired by many art of books :D You can find a ton of art of books on Amazon, such as art of ratatouille, art of Luca, etc.
Awesome video! Just a few questions about the portfolio. Firstly, the human body thing at the start, when they say “drawn from life” do they mean like you progressively made the drawing up using knowledge of anatomy or that you copy it from real life? And also would you lose marks if they were wearing clothes? I know awkward question... I’m just weird about this kind of thing and that’s probably what I’d prefer to do. Last question is, how long are you given on the portfolio? Thank you so much, your video is very helpful :) it is another few years before I go, so I have a lot of time to prepare and think about it but it’s videos like yours that make it so much easier and a less worrying experience 👍👍
Hi! Thank you! 1) As you can see from my accepted portfolio and other accepted portfolios, the figure needs to be of a nude model, no clothes. It's weird at first but you get used to it and you will only draw nude models in first year and extra life at Sheridan 👌 You should study up on anatomy in your own time and go to life drawing sessions (once it's safe to do so) where there will be nude models who pose for certain amounts of times and you just draw them 2) Requirements come out in October or November, and the deadline is in February. However some people start way earlier (I officially started over the summer because as I said in my video, I knew character rotation would be a requirement, as it was for many past years)
Wish I knew about this program in high school! Does the program tie in any visual effects? Or is it mainly 2D/3D character and background animation (design techniques, rigging, texturing, and modelling). Also what software's are used in the program (Adobe Animate, Toonboom, Maya, Blender)? Thanks and Goodluck for the next couple years!
I'm not too sure since I'm only in second year right now! But we do have a vague visual effects lesson in second year animation where we learn about the physics of fire and water and how to animate/stylize it :) For intense visual effects like cgi, you should check out the computer animation program at Sheridan (different things haha). We use toonboom and Maya, and I hope one day we'll switch to blender. But for now we're sticking with Maya because that's what Disney and Pixar are using :')
Love your work!but when will the profolio requirements released?like a year before or?As a not very talented person, what if i fail applying the animation program ?Did you prepare any other artworks for other schools?
Thank you so much! 💖 This year the requirements were released at the beginning of October (for the 2020 applying year). If you are looking to apply in 2021, the requirements will be out in October 2020 and the complete (non-watermarked) requirements are only available on your Sheridan access account once you've registered TO Sheridan. (If you have any problems with registration, just contact Sheridan 😂 I don't work for them and the process varies depending on where you're from). Everyone's backup plan is different and I can't answer that for you :') it's just a matter of doing your own research and figuring out which option is best for you. I also answered your question at 12:00 (I only applied to Sheridan animation and Sheridan illustration, but my main focus was animation so my illustration portfolio was really bad). My roommate on the other hand, applied to 20+ American schools in all sorts of fields (science, law, art, etc.) and decided to go to Sheridan in the end. It all depends what works for you :) hope that helps!
Hey... I want to do animations... But I don't really think I'm AmAzInG at art or anything.... I can copy a cartoon... Do some drawings...... some average watercolor painting as well..... What do i need to do to get into a good University for animations ? Do i need to take a gap year to learn more stuff to get in ? I'm in the last year if high school...so my college would be next year...can someone please help me !!!
(Sorry I am asking a lot cuz I’m applying to college next year and I’m scared)How much time did u have to make your portfolio? Also for the figure drawing did you do it at home or did u do that like an exam ?
I believe I answered it in the video, but I began experimenting/trying new styles in grade 10. In grade 11 I started practicing the old requirements and doing many many perspective drawings (because that was my greatest weakness). My earliest piece is my personal piece, which I did for a zine in June 2018 (end of grade 11). I started creating my portfolio character over the summer. I officially "started" in September (grade 12), but the requirements only came out in October. For life drawing, I went to live modeling sessions. The portfolio prep studio I went to offered life drawing classes as well, and I started when I was in grade 11. I never do it at home (because professional models have better poses) and there's no exam. You just go to life drawing sessions (and in this time, you can use croquis cafe on vimeo). Hope that helps!
I'm sorry for asking too many questions but my family is lower middle class and I don't have a job yet. Do you think that'll be an issue when attending Sheridan? (Btw I don't live in Oakville so I have to be a residence in Sheridan in case I get it).
It's best to contact Sheridan directly about these kinds of issues :) you can give them a call and talk to the financials office. I'm only here to share my experience in portfolio prep. School work is heavy but I do know a few people who managed to balance a part-time job and school work (it all comes down to time management). That being said, some of those people have fallen behind on school work at times or just have had less time for social gatherings (networking, which is pretty important in this industry but you have 4 whole years at this school and if you mingle enough in your classes, you should be fine).
I'm already in college but I'm undeclared for now. I've alway's stuck to what I'm comfortable drawing with and that's fucked me over now. I have a year to learn basically everything about animation. soo.. ya.. can I do it? who knows.
Hi, I'm preparing for my Sheridan animation portfolio and I'm quite low on personal artworks and I lack of digital art skills. Do you have any suggestions on what to submit?
Anything you draw in your free time or represents you best :) they want to see what *you* draw (it's called *personal* works for a reason ✨). Submit something you're confident in! I give more tips at 9:38 👍
hi! yes I did! I started some time around grade 10/11 as well! haha it's weird at first but you get used to it :D I had to be 16 years old to go to actual live model sessions in my area, so in the meantime I practiced online. Croquis Cafe is a great resource! Even now I use it to do life drawing when campus life drawing is closed.
paluumin i don’t think there are live model sessions in my area plus my parents don’t even know i want to do animation 🥴 but thanks ! i’ll practice online i guess and find out about live model sessions around me :D
@@bunny-vj6qe Yeh that sounds like a good plan! I would suggest maybe talking with your parents about your choice too haha I had to get parental permission to go to live model drawing sessions and the actual application process asks for info about your parents I'm pretty sure 😂
Once you have been registered to Sheridan's system (there's a whole separate application that asks for your credentials and personal info), it can be found in your Sheridan access account under something along the lines of additional requirements. There's a non-watermarked version of the requirements with all the information, templates, and character sheets 👌 they won't accept any other template
I answered this at 16:20 ! But yes, you can submit digital submissions (though drawing traditionally will benefit you more and the profs will lowkey like it more). Don't submit sketches for the requirements though... Digital or traditional, your work needs to be polished (except maybe storyboard and some personal pieces depending on what you're submitting)
@@DavidDoesNotExist no problem! And yes I scanned them all :D For life drawing, because the paper is so big, my tutors took pictures for me and edited the exposure and curves in Photoshop 👌
I went to a lot of life drawing sessions! I also went to blue tadpole for portfolio prep and a second year animation student was teaching life drawing :) I also learned a lot from Sheridan's summer portfolio prep course (as I mentioned in my video), where one of the first year profs taught life drawing.
it's a bit hard to explain but more easier to show... If you pause in the video (where I circle the tangents), you might get a better idea of it? You can also google "tangents in storyboard/animation". In short, it's lines merging with other lines or intersecting corners where it's not supposed to (?) :'D I'm planning on making a storyboard video next month on Patreon that will explain the basics of storyboard in more detail because there's so much that goes into it :') hope that helps!
What were these summer courses you mentioned you took before applying? Are they at sheridan or are they online? Were they related to the school or some other place?
They were at Sheridan! So my first time on campus was actually during these summer portfolio prep courses :) Basically either a first year animation prof or an industry professional teaches you an aspect of the portfolio for a week in the actual Sheridan classrooms. They had courses like life drawing, character design, storyboard, layout, animation 101, etc. You could also ask them questions about portfolio and show them your work and ask for feedback :) They basically compress most of first year into 4 days to give you a little taste of what it'd be like to be a student at Sheridan (without the pile of homework of course haha)
@@kaceykace yep on Sheridan's website 👌 They also have more info at the open houses and they handed out flyers back when it was in person. It's around $400-$500 per course I think! But yeah hope they'll run it next year :D
Your art is really lovely and I am so insecure about my artwork TvT since I want to apply as an international student, it makes me more stress. Any tips to become more confident? Ahshhshss I'm so scare
Thank you! Aaa please don't feel that way! While we all tend to compare ourselves with others, the first step in being confident is to stop comparing yourselves with others or focusing on "who to beat". It's a very toxic and self depricating way of thinking :'0 I was never always good at art, and because I wasn't originally gonna pursue it as a career, I just did it for fun/as a hobby. So I had a lot of fun drawing and therefore I drew a LOT;;; it's hard to get better or feel confident in something when you force yourself to :'0 so stop comparing and draw more! 💖✨ Learn to love art and just enjoy and set goals for yourself that you genuinely want to reach! (And by goals, I don't mean like "get into ___ school", but goals focused around art like improving anatomy, making poses more dynamic, etc.)
@@paluumin-art oh my i have never realized I was so focus on comparing myself and tried to be as good as possible. Genuinely, thank you! Its very hard for me to shake the "jelousy" (i guess) and its weight off my shoulder because I always feel like I'm not good enough. I was previously think of art as an hobby, but since I wanted to pursue it so badly the sense of "beat everyone and become the best" is so strong that I became such an negative person and have a horrible perspective on my works. Now that I realized this, its may hard for me to change right away but I hope in the future I will have more confident showing people my artworks and be less competitive towards other artist ^^ Once again, thank you so much. And also sorry about the bad English haha
How did you make a portfolio? How do you know what kind of drawing you should draw and pass on to them? Did they tell you? Like for example, they said that you should draw digital arts, traditional, life drawing, sketches. Is that what they did? I don't know how to make a portfolio... and I only draw traditionally, like pencil and paper and color pencil... But I don't know how to paint or to draw digitally.. Huhu! I'm so jealous of you... 😭😭😭 I'm grade 12 and next year (2021). I'll be in college (1st year college) 2021... Huhu! I'm too late, am I? I live here in the Philippines, and I'm thinking of majoring in animation... But, I don't draw much so... I think I won't fit in... And I'm not good at time managing.
Hi! They release requirements every year so they tell you what they're looking for! Of course, one of the tricks is to have fun with the ideas and use your imagination. They never said whether something had to be traditional or digital, it's up to you. I had digital personal pieces because I have a lot of experience in digital art and I wanted to show that. You can find a PDF of some sample requirements from previous years: academics.sheridancollege.ca/programs/bachelor-of-animation/admission-requirements I would again, like I said in the video, ask yourself why you want to go into animation :) Because animation is a lot of drawing (you'd have to draw everyday for a couple hours at least in order to be able to finish the homework given in first year), and it demands a lot of time management. Of course, you can take some time off and practice developing a good work ethic and drawing more. There's no age limit to apply :) I know people who have applied over 5 times, and I know people who have degrees in engineering or business and decided they wanted to do animation. All you have to do is research and understand what you need to prepare for a good portfolio, and then do it. Set deadlines for yourself and manage your time so that you finish at a reasonable time. Hope that helps and good luck!
Hi! I have a question. The requirements said that I should have certain high school courses and I do have few of them and in the future I’d like to pay to finish some uni/mix online courses but I’m applying for a program that has nothing to do with science, math etc in my community college ..do you think they will still look into my high school marks? Cuz I’m gonna pay for my online high school to finish the courses requirements while in college
Hi! Best to contact the college directly because I don't know 😂 I'm just here to share my experience with the portfolio so my knowledge on the other application process is limited :') sorry about that;;; but you can always call/email whatever school you're applying to 👍 they'll have the exact answers
Did you got really good grades before having a Bac in animation? Because I'm in high school and my grades aren't really fantastic, so... I wonder if I could have a chance to go into an animation/art school That does not cost the price of a soul without amazing grades like 15 or 16.
Hi! I worked really hard on keeping good grades in high school (which ended up being useful when I applied for scholarships), but the minimum average for Sheridan animation is 65% (more details on their website), so you're fine 😂
Also! Grades don't matter that much once you're in the animation program (employers don't look at your grades, just your portfolio). However again, having good grades means more opportunities for scholarships :D
Hello! Soo, if you apply to Sheridan and get accepted, you need to enter the program that same year or you can decide if you want to enter the program next year?
Yo, i have a question. I applied on Ontario colleges.ca to three different programs that require a portfolio but I havent gotten any emails about the characters for this year or any of the details or how even to send in my portfolios, please help me :'))))).
Hi! It's best to contact your guidance counselor or call Sheridan directly 👌 However for me, after I registered through Ontario Colleges, a Sheridan account was made for me after a couple days. Then I could access the requirements, portfolio review payment, and submission page through Sheridan Access. Again, it's best to contact Sheridan if you have any issues 👍
I scanned my sketchbook and took a photo of the rest (and touched it up in photoshop with a few adjustment layers, mainly just to edit the brightness and contrast)
I live in America and I am looking in to schools to study animation at. Sheridan seems like a very nice school and I was wondering if it would be difficult for me to get in to because I would be coming from America. I am aware that I will have to go through the VISA process, but assuming I am able to get one and I have one, would it be much different to get in to this college as an American as it would be for a Canadian?
My roommate is from America haha and a ton of my peers are from America too, so it's definitely doable :) But yes it is a bit more difficult because the international student cutoff is higher than the domestic cutoff (domestic/canadian cutoff is usually in the mid-80s, international students usually need to score above 90). You can ask around to see what the international cutoff was last year and that should give you a better idea. The visa process should be easier for you since you're American, so no need to worry about that. I actually think it's easier to apply to Sheridan than to American schools (just my opinion haha based on stories I've heard) because there are no other "requirements" besides the portfolio and your high school diploma. No SATs, no written essays or essay videos, no tests, etc. And it's a LOT cheaper too compared to American schools 😂 All Sheridan cares about is how well you draw and that you've graduated high school 👌
I'm having a really hard time trying to find an in to the Sheridan community. I live in a community that isn't into art, and i'm super on my own right now. How do you find these professors?
I attended the Sheridan summer portfolio prep course as I mentioned in the video! Anyone can register, but this was before the pandemic :'0 But usually you just register on their website and then you go to Sheridan for the classes! (usually 4 days per course)
paluumin oh wow!! Thank you! Lol someone who went to my high school named Anna Price said you were friends. She’s really sweet and gave me lots of good advice

Wow !
_do I see Krita's animation timeline there_
oh boi. now I feel blessed
OMG! Your actually my savior, this video answers lots of my questions. And I love Yuri on ICE

I really just cried because I loved watching this so much??? That’s never happened before??? What did you do???
you did incredible yo!! keep goin' at it and never stop!
You are so amazing for making something like this. I am trying to get into different art school ( Interlochen, creative writing) but can't find anything like this, witch is really daunting, I am just all on my own. So, I just wanted to say that this probably means a lot for anyone trying out for Sheridan, or animation in generall.
Ayyyy congratulations! You 100% deserve it ^.^
Okay, I'm subscribing, really like your personality btw
I love these kinds of things. Young people with skills I only dream of, and those skills are the benchmark to be able to get in somewhere to train to be able to be even better. Amazing. And so beautiful.
Crazy you managed to get that amount of detail from your 5 muintes poses
This was so helpful! Btw I love your drawing style keep up the good work!!!👍👍👍
I Love the way you use does dot patterns for the background of your short film. Your use of colors if too Brilliant!!!
I’m only in grade 11 and I’m thinking of applying to Sheridan as well as Max the mutt. This is very helpful!
I’m a freshman but I cannot stop thinking about majoring in art when I grow up
This video was INCREDIBLY helpful. I have to make a portfolio for an animation program so these tips are GREAT! THANK U SOOO MUCH FOR MAKING THİS❤

This is amazing. I would love to know how much you have improved since being at Sheridan so far. if you are this amazing beforehand i cant wait to see how amazing you are now. would love to see some of your newer stuff too. Amazing
My best ability is colouring, my weakness are perspective drawing. I am focusing on anatomy right now
I have 2 years left, I want to work very hard for this.
this is incredible!!! However, I have a question. Is it possible if I do all my pieces all digital? Are they asking for both traditional and digital?
Great job in getting into animation and your drawing is awesome dude 👌 good luck in the program ✌️
wow this is amazing!! couple of questions if u dont mind?
- what app did u use to make your animation?? QuQ
- any tips for water color and character design? u seem to be sooooo on top of the game omg
thanks!!
thank you! 💕💖💖
1) I did my animation traditionally (on paper), and I scanned them and put them in photoshop or online gifmaker :'D there was another program I used at my studio but like you'd need some next level equipment for that :'))
2) character design tips are just the tips I have in the video :'D for watercolour, keep in mind it's called watercolour, so use water. Experiment with the different variations of intensity and the different effects you can get for watercolour 👌 and most of all, practice :'D I've been doing watercolour (seriously?) for a couple years :'D A lot of it is colour theory as well so you might want to review/study that too 👍
Hope that helps!

Excuse me but how did you do that thing like to add little dots in your background? Looks very cool
Hi! For the life drawing is erasing ok? And did u erase n sketch quickly to perfedt the pose? Or should I be expected to nail it down first try?
Erasing in life drawing is a big nono :'D In life drawing classes and sessions, no one around me ever uses an eraser and I was never taught to use an eraser in life drawing 😂😂 erasing is seen as a waste of time and a sign of lack of confidence by some people 👀 it took a lot of practice for sure, but eventually you'll learn to draw one (1) big line for the leg (for example), and just keep going (doesn't matter if it's perfect or trash :'))). You can see some of my current life drawings on my realism account on Instagram: @/nimuulap to get an idea of my linework! I try to make my lines confident and in as little strokes as possible :'D (and I never use erasers in life drawing unless it's a tiny practice drawing in my sketchbook 😂)
However, if you have a really good life drawing and you lowkey messed up this oNE line that's not supposed to be in a certain spot, and it's a vERY small change... You can lowkey erase it 👀 and submit it 😂 but just keep in mind they can tell if you erased or not :'))
I’m not even an art major, I’m just trying to put together an art portfolio to have a spike in arts and get into an ivy :,)
Thank you so much for sharing!!

my daughter is wanting to take animation and i told her about the sheridan program...she's in grade 11 now and i suggested she watch yours and others portfolio vids! she's pretty good at the hand drawings, but i think she could use some life drawing practice-any suggestions?? congrats on your admission, though a few years ago now!!

Can you do a timing tutorial I’ve seen ppl do that lil line with numbers in circles and I can’t find any tutorials to help me
That's usually for marking down key frames and determining timing! If you search that up you might find more tutorials :)
So basically in order to get in school to get better you have to already be better
Thanks for the advice, also what is the summer course you’re talking about? and why do you say the portfolio review day isn’t good?

They released the requirements around October for my year I think...

👍 Nothing too special 😂 this is just what I did back then!
paluumin Alright, thank you so much!
You said in your video that you got some Sheridan professors to look over your work how did you contact them. Thank you
Hii I've been thinking to apply to this college since it looks intresting and THANKFULLY ur vid appeared on my home page IM RLLY RLLY thankful for this tips of urs to get in and how it's like in that college hehe but like are they really against anime artstyle....bcs most of my arts are anime artstyle.....
It's weird at first but you get used to it and you will only draw nude models in first year and extra life at Sheridan 👌 You should study up on anatomy in your own time and go to life drawing sessions (once it's safe to do so) where there will be nude models who pose for certain amounts of times and you just draw them
2) Requirements come out in October or November, and the deadline is in February. However some people start way earlier (I officially started over the summer because as I said in my video, I knew character rotation would be a requirement, as it was for many past years)
@@paluumin-art Thank you so much! I appreciate it :)
But for now we're sticking with Maya because that's what Disney and Pixar are using :')
hiiii what app did u use to make the short animationnn??? let me knooww pleasee thankssss
I animated it on paper and scanned each page and put it into an online gif maker
Could you link the book you mentioned in this video?
Hope that helps!
paluumin thank you so much ❤️❤️
I'm sorry for asking too many questions but my family is lower middle class and I don't have a job yet. Do you think that'll be an issue when attending Sheridan? (Btw I don't live in Oakville so I have to be a residence in Sheridan in case I get it).
Also do you think I'd have time for part time job because I heard that the assignments take a lot of time.
I give more tips at 9:38 👍
Wow 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
did u do the life drawings from nude models or? i'm trying to figure out how i should practice that. im in grade 10 but it's stressing me out haha
hi!
I wonder where can I get the Storyboard panel? and is it ok to use the other panel instead of the one Sheridan gave us?
Once you have been registered to Sheridan's system (there's a whole separate application that asks for your credentials and personal info), it can be found in your Sheridan access account under something along the lines of additional requirements. There's a non-watermarked version of the requirements with all the information, templates, and character sheets 👌 they won't accept any other template
What's the name of the summer course you took?
is it possible to submit a portfolio as a digital sketch or does it have to be traditional?
I answered this at 16:20 ! But yes, you can submit digital submissions (though drawing traditionally will benefit you more and the profs will lowkey like it more). Don't submit sketches for the requirements though... Digital or traditional, your work needs to be polished (except maybe storyboard and some personal pieces depending on what you're submitting)
I have a question! Eehh, did you make the drawings from every section (except the personal art) by hand or are some done digitally?
Yep! I did all of mine traditionally :D but if you're thinking about doing them digitally, I explain it at 16:20
@@paluumin-art ooo, ok. Aaaand did you scan them or did you take a picture ( btw, thank you for taking your time answering my question!
@@DavidDoesNotExist no problem! And yes I scanned them all :D For life drawing, because the paper is so big, my tutors took pictures for me and edited the exposure and curves in Photoshop 👌
I have a question, how and where did you draw the figure drawings? I’m kinda nervous and might apply here :(
I went to a lot of life drawing sessions! I also went to blue tadpole for portfolio prep and a second year animation student was teaching life drawing :) I also learned a lot from Sheridan's summer portfolio prep course (as I mentioned in my video), where one of the first year profs taught life drawing.
paluumin thank you🥺🥺 I’m so glad I get to meet as someone as dedicating and nice as you! Someday I’ll reach there!
What about drawing both anthropomorphic and humanoid characters in personal section?
Definitely allowed :) We even have a whole unit dedicated to that in first year character design haha
What did you mean by tangents in the storyboard?
it's a bit hard to explain but more easier to show...
@@paluumin-art thats really cool!! Do you sign up for these online then? I assume they cost money also, man I hope they run them next summer :)
@@kaceykace yep on Sheridan's website 👌 They also have more info at the open houses and they handed out flyers back when it was in person. It's around $400-$500 per course I think! But yeah hope they'll run it next year :D
@@paluumin-art thanks so much for the info!!
Now that I realized this, its may hard for me to change right away but I hope in the future I will have more confident showing people my artworks and be less competitive towards other artist ^^
Once again, thank you so much.
You can find a PDF of some sample requirements from previous years: academics.sheridancollege.ca/programs/bachelor-of-animation/admission-requirements
I would again, like I said in the video, ask yourself why you want to go into animation :) Because animation is a lot of drawing (you'd have to draw everyday for a couple hours at least in order to be able to finish the homework given in first year), and it demands a lot of time management.
This portfolio for bachelor's or masters? You know Master's portfolio requirements for sheridan
Did you got really good grades before having a Bac in animation?
Because I'm in high school and my grades aren't really fantastic, so...
I wonder if I could have a chance to go into an animation/art school
That does not cost the price of a soul without amazing grades like 15 or 16.
@@paluumin-art ho okay 😊 thanks a lot for taking your time to answer me, keep up the good work your amazing 🌟
Can you apply and submit your portfolio before you finish high school?
Hello! Soo, if you apply to Sheridan and get accepted, you need to enter the program that same year or you can decide if you want to enter the program next year?
I believe you have to enter the program that year, but you can call Sheridan and ask them about that :) They'll have a more accurate answer
Again, it's best to contact Sheridan if you have any issues 👍
did you scan your traditional pieces or just picture on your phone??? bc i’m lost
I scanned my sketchbook and took a photo of the rest (and touched it up in photoshop with a few adjustment layers, mainly just to edit the brightness and contrast)
@@paluumin-art oh ok, this really helped!
@@paluumin-art ok thank you so much!
@@paluumin-art Tsym! This is real helpful :D
What program did you use for your short animation??
I did it traditionally (on paper) and scanned the pages and used an online gif maker :D
paluumin oh wow!! Thank you! Lol someone who went to my high school named Anna Price said you were friends. She’s really sweet and gave me lots of good advice
