Hey Kara Beal and Tom Cardy! Amazing how well you rode the Darkside! Those kind of old school natural trails are my favorites! The north shore style woodwork developed because the original trail builders in Vancouver BC Canada in the 1980s had loads of left over cedar from the original logging in the 1930s and 1940s when they took only the premium logs and left the rest! It was easier to build a cedar ladder bridge than fill in a bog with dirt! It was also easier to build cedar ladder ramps over big logs! All the replacements and repairs are still done with cedar because it's naturally alge and bug resistant! The nasty green alge that makes other woods super slippy when wet will not grow on cedar! Ride ride ride!
I’m not going to lie but I love mountain biking and I’m also pretty new, the first trails that I’ve done are in Bikepark wales which I think is a very professional park, to me that black trail looks a bit easier than the blues at Bikepark wales 😂
@@KaraBeal we need this so bad, everything is better with stickers and even though Im a dude with my riding I could probably do with a "Im honestly cacking my knickers" sticker as well lol
Great video my daughters and me went there last year on the standard mtbs and did the w2 from gwencowyn ponds probley spelt wrong sorry hardest trail I've ever done... and yes I definitely needed a biscuit or 2 after.. keep up the good work and great videos..
Just watched this video because me and my 7 year old are going to Afan aswell and wanted to know what it was like. You video was great and now we can’t wait! Thanks
Awesome ride Kara! As you say that was sick. Been so busy only now have i been able to view this!! Cant wait to get back on the trails myself!! Safe trail smashing hun x
Loved this one ! My local trails - next time don’t go down dark side , stay on the fire round for 100 meters or so then there’s an alternate descent down that runs parallel with Darkside but it’s higher up to the left 👍👍🤛
Those sections with the drop off on the right looked so scary even with the GoPro effect. Thanks for sharing these videos Kara and your genuine reactions which are so inspiring!
Watched your video thought it looked awesome so me and my butties decided to give it a try. What a fucking shit hole. Spent our 7 hour day climbing a fucking mountain with shit signage, getting lost and everyone we met was also lost. Nobody had a fucking clue where they was going. When we eventually found a “downhill trail” it went on for about 47 seconds, had fences that we had to stop our bike to lift over and basically was suitable for my 6 year old boy who can’t ride a bike. Worst day of my live ever. Went home swapped my bike for a bag. Thanks a lot kids crying.
Omg at the end I recognised the trail you came down! I can't believe it's changed that much. I'm all for cyclists using the area, but they've strong-armed the horse riders out of the park. That trail used to be one of our gallop paths up the mountain before they felled all the trees. I went up there once on a very big horse for a gallop after they took the trees away only to find huge drainage ditches unexpectedly (obviously still in the process of re-wilding the trail and getting plants to grow). I'd be petrified to do any of this on a bike but it's weird that I'm fine with it on horseback lol
Rode this one today, you smashed that North shore section 👌 I'm definitely taking an ebike next time. I didn't put the power down on that wooden ramp bike almost ended up in the river I bailed into a Bush lol
Hi Kara W2 is made up of Y Wall and Whites Level red trails which i have ridden many times. They are both red trails but because of the length of the two trails rode together as full loop 44km then its graded as a black. So its only the length of the W2 loop which makes it a black not the features or steepness, so really you are riding two red trails which are both great as one loop. You should ride it on a normal bike F/S bike then you are really knackered after not an e-bike. 😁 Well done for completing it but much easier on an e-bike.👍
local trail for me, w2 is just whites level and y wall combined with a linking fire road in between, it's rated black due to the distance but it mainly 2 red trails. although whites level has a black section.
"im going to need a biscuit after this" *HAHA LOVE IT* , think it was MBUK back in the 1990s had a sticker sheet with "will ride further for a burger" and "I brake for cake" lol we need the biscuit sticker :P
Those trails are our locals. What you done in this video was the climb up y Wal then crossed over and down a trail called whites level. All these trails are rated red w2 is up y wal down whites level up whites level and down y wal. You actually bumped into some of the boys my mates ride with on this day. Good riding none the less glad you approve of our local😁 that said there are some really steep black trails around there aswell
You missed out the climb on whytes level, and wall black run, and the rest of the wall descent zig zags etc. Did you do it and not film it? From where the video ended you pedal towards glyncorrwg then head on up the hill. I love that climb. So techhy. And punchy. Bet the eeb’ would chew it up
Afan is my local cycle centre and its so refreshing watching non Port Talbot riders coming here to enjoy the trails, great effort on the W2 loop, you need to come back and do the skyline and blade loops, the final descents are a little step up from the Darkside. 👏🚵♀️🏴👏🚵♀️🏴. Can't believe 3 people have taken the time to give a thimbs down, probably mtb snobs who think everything should be 40 foot road gaps and sweeping burns. 🛎ends.
Love Afan and Glyncorrwg. Usually make pilgrimage over at least once a year stopping off at cwmcarn on the way. We get a big group together and stay opposite afan lodge. Being a regular you must have noticed numbers dropping due to BPW?
@@letsgocamping88 I've only been riding around 6 yrs, which is around the same time bpw opened. To be honest with the evolution of ebikes the numbers seem to have picked up over the last year, that could be down to bpw being shut for a few months as well mind, I think quite a few people who travel a fair distance to ride bpw also spend a day up afan while they're here. I think the bike shops in glyncorrwg and afan took a hit a few years ago but seem to be doing alright at the moment. More people stuck in uk will have helped as well. 👍🏴👍🏴👍🏴🍻🍻🚵♂️🚵♂️
@@letsgocamping88 I've heard that BPW actually increased visitor numbers at Afan... it's not that far from BPW and you can ride all weekend without having to pay an entry fee.

Got black run on y wall. But yeah mostly red. Brilliant day in the saddle. I particularly enjoy the climb up whites from glyncorrwg.
@@letsgocamping88 Fun of which is diminished when electro-assistance is involved.

And the winner for this years gold standard mtb quote goes too.....
Kara Beal, for:
"Don't even... I'm honestly, kackin' my knickers."
How did you start at Afan forest park and finish at Glyncorrwg, you missed zig zags the best trail of all.
Wow i like to ride that trail so cool and views are fantastic
"I'm honestly cacking my knickers!" LOL
nice video loved the commentary
It sounded like Tom was gently taking the pi55 when you were riding the boards 😀
