- Teach your dog DROP on RECALL is a fun exercise and it may also save your dog's life. This is about dog obedience, because your dog must listen to you and it's also about safety. Getting your dog to respond to your commands may well save his life in many instances.

Robert when you were talking to us as viewers you said "here" and dear Mya only moved to that word,bless her. It can be tricky talking whilst doing a demo as we often use command words unintentionally. She is beautiful . Lovely to see how alert you are to the surroundings. I am the same. Thank you : )
I noticed that too. Probably because I’ve often done the same with my release word as I sometimes have just said it out of habit in my regular speaking and not as a proper release command. It shows how in tune with our commands our dogs can be. They can pick up on things that sometimes slip past us.
SO important!!! If your dog is coming back and something dangerous is coming to get between you - LIKE A TRUCK you HAVE to be able to put your dog in place. Because in recall the dog is focused on you. Only you. AND even though this is serious obedience, people that see this happen usually have to pick their jaw up. And there's some proud satisfaction in that. Lol
It's nice to see you training a dog that is not perfectly trained. You made this totally understandable while working through different reactions our dogs might present. Thank you.

I have Border Collies that I herd with, when herding you need to be able to stop them at any point during a high drive moment.
And the stepping towards them while maintaining an assertive posture is really a great tool, always good to see tools you use yourself being applied by others in other fields of training.
Recently found your channel and found my self to agree a lot with the way you think.

I wish these were numbered....other than that they are perfect for me with my first Weimaraner boy who thinks he is boss. Extremely intelligent but I had Newfoundlands for 30 years and they learn differently so these have been so good for us.
Robert Cabral thank you for filming working on this in real time with a dog that does not know the exercise. I have a 5 month old GSD that I want to do IPO with. I work with a trainer weekly since she was 12 weeks old. Your videos like this keep me motivated when I feel progress is moving too slow. Thanks so much for the time you take to put GOOD information out.
i love this, i can't wait to get off work so i can watch part 2 with goofy. this was one of the more fun things Niko(gsd) and i have learned. in my neighborhood i live at the end of the road so i will put Niko in a sit and walk 3 houses down to the intersection and give him hand signals only to down and back to sit and i'll do this a few times and switch up whether the recall is from down or sit and how many transitions there are before the recall. then i recall with a hand signal and halfway i'll give a hand signal for stop which also puts him in a sit, then recall again. it was a tough one to get right but it was well worth the work, he loves this exercise and i love it too. fun to switch it up and challenge him and then when he gets the more complicated multi-command exercises down i swell with pride like an honor roll parent. my trainer (retired military and police k9 handler/trainer) taught me to put the dog in position to fail, not in a mean way but to challenge him with full knowledge that he would most likely fail so that he and i could both grow and learn from that failure. it's like jumping over a 2x4, if you always jump the same small obstacle you will never grow and be able to jump a hurtle, i've used that approach and it has been amazing the things Niko has learned and how well this wild tornado of fury and teeth has grown into a dog i trust completely off leash in any and every situation. i know he will obey and not fail me as surely as i know his name.

This is excellent and encouraging and informational ...to see you ACTUALLY work with a partially trained mature dog on a command, where the dog (or you) screws up and how you continue in a calm relaxed patient confident clear fashion. That’s how it’s done of course but so good to see YOU do it.

My 1 yr old Boxer pup Autumn went 6 feet and picked up my slipper brought it to me and on command dropped it at my feet. I had began teaching her this by asking her to pick up and bring her toys, however I ask her ' put it in my hand' with toys.
When i call her in from the yard( privacy fenced) she approaches the door with a favorite outside toy in her mouth, I ask her to drop. I love the look on her face.
I always enjoy watching your content and it helps me where I have been learning to train my German shepherd because I get show a task and then I get shown a bit more in my training and I spend a week practicing.
Everything is make sense now .

I have a question though, I have a 5 month old Australian Shepherd who is learning extremely fast using your techniques for the basics and a variety of other skills, but drop on recall has been so hard for him. He is just a puppy, so I know there will be lots of mistakes and a long road of learning ahead but maybe you have some advice?
He is great at recall, then I step forward and give the down command and he freezes in place then slowly cowers to a down position. He is acting like me adding the Drop command is correcting him for recalling. When his elbows hit the ground I praise him (saying good down with excitement) and give his release/treat, but then the next 3-4 recalls he creeps towards me and is hesitant (at this point I just do normal recall like you suggested and he perks back up).
Is there something I can do to make him feel like me giving a drop command during his recall is not me correcting him for coming to me? Or is it just him being a little confused and with time and treats he'll learn he's doing everything correctly?

Maya, Goofy, and Duane lucky ducks growing up in M-Bu.... beautiful weather, ocean, and lots of dog friendly businesses to take them too. If I have kids one day I’m sending them to Pepperdine if they go the college route.... as long as they can be on full scholarship of course lol.

Robert I have a question. I have an 8 month old doberman pup, my problem is, she wants to be entertained all the time. What I mean by this is, she could be out for 2 walks a day, have her toys, mental stimulation, training a few times per day for short periods. But when I just want to sit down and watch tv she won’t stop pacing, nudging me to stroke her which is so annoying because it’s like she’s demanding attention. I’ve tried teaching her a place command for when I’m relaxing but it only works for a short period and then she’s pacing around the room again. How can I teach her to switch off? Thanks

I have a question about recall, I phased out treats too fast and moved on too fast when I shouldn’t have, we introduced the whistle which has been great will it confuse me dog for me to use both a whistle and an oral command for recall? Thank you!

From yesterday I started getting frustrated with my BC . But now after watching this my BC is so well behaved. He never needed any special tactics to down on send or come. He understands intuitively. But then when I watch goofy my BC comes up very short. Is this a result of a difference in intellect between breeds?

Was there a reason you used a flexi instead of the traditional long line? Just wondering. Great video.
I think that if flexi leads weren't invented for training and practicing recalls (and I know they weren't), they should have been. No line to reel in, no missing a correction because the line is too slack, nothing for the dog to trip over or make a wide arc to avoid if they're sensitive types, nothing for the human to trip over, no extra arm movements needed to reel the line in. It's really the ONLY thing I use a flexi for. HTH.
I have a 1.5 year old boxer and have no intention of doing IPO but would like her to earn her BH or the equivalent. How long would it take to train if I am consistant with an hour of training daily
Robert, great video. Question(s) for you: I employ a Herm Spengler prong collar as a walking/training tool for my 2 GSD’s. I position the prong portion at the base of their neck as opposed to the jugular area. I just don’t want the prongs on that jugular portion. I have no problem at all with anyone who does place the prong portion in aforementioned jugular area. The feedback they are accustomed to receiving from the collar seems just as good. Am I not getting the full benefits of the collar in that position? What do you think? They are high drive AKC sable’s (fixed) who do very well at obedience and walking for being 22 months. A bit standoffish with smaller dogs. Thank You.

Unless I'm mistaken, at 2:05 Maya was unable to find the treat that was thrown, and much of her subsequent behavior arises from that confusion (e.g. at 2:27 she's still looking for the lost treat (not to mention that she hears the word "Hier" (Here) out of context)) Poor Maya :-(
Poor Maya? A dog leaning a command is pittied? That might be what’s wrong with people who don’t train their dogs. She broke a stay and was corrected back. Whether there is a treat in the ground or not, she broke the stay and received a fair correction.
Robert Cabral Fully agreed! My "Poor Maya" comment was meant humorously and "tongue in cheek". Sometimes comments don't come across the right way in print. It's obvious Maya is very compassionately and competently cared for. I was just mentioning that there may have been other factors contributing to her lapses in behavior.
I'm at approximately the same level of training with our 4 y.o. Australian Kelpie, which we adopted from animal rescue this past summer. Boo must be kept on a very "short leash" w.r.t. responsiveness to commands. she's doing very well with off leash recall, much better than I could ever have imagined a few months ago, but I look forward to adding the interruptions you taught in this lesson as an additional challenge. I found this lesson very helpful.

Don’t use your dog as a guard dog. Get an alarm and a gun. Even a well trained dog may wander and get hit by a car.
Robert. Great wisdom. My dogs aren’t guard dogs. But they are alert animals. Lol. They are all inside dogs and get chain time as well. The apbt male is outside much more as he prefers it. I have never taught them attack or anything of that nature. If one was to come in my home I know that everything would be fine but the intruder. But that’s not their intent.
Perimeter train your dog. Not the beat at explaining but google it.

Proper knowledge of what exactly and E collar is (and isn’t), proper introduction training, and solid balanced training combined.... yes an E Collar is an effective and humane training tool
I do like his methods, but I twisted it in my own way- training with no treats ,just a live and petting and cuddling every time my puppy does follow my commands. Think about- can you have all ur life treats in ur pockets? And is he coming to me bcs of my orders or bcs of the treats. If you dont have treats or you stop giving them, then how many times he will come- no more than 5x. On the sixth time he will tink you are cheating him again and will not come
So, use every single words he says, but get rid of the treats.
Robert has videos on this topic, and explains very well why treats are a must for quite some time in dog's training.
Dogs react to conditioning. It becomes almost like an instinct. They hear the word they react. All the dogs that I've owned and trained have reacted to my words. Treats are great for loring and shaping. After that they're not necessary but should be given on occasion. It makes training a lot faster.
