Oh yes. More Rascals. Love this song. Groovin' People Got to Be Free A Girl Like You Lonely Too Long Greatest time to grow up. Good reaction Harry. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
America's first true blue eyed soul band. You're one of the very few on TH-cam who react to this band. These guys deserve to recognized for what they were. Although this was a cover version, we in the black neighborhood respected these guys and they in turn respected the music and the musicians they loved. Thanks for this reaction. Hopefully you'll find their songs "Lonely Too Long", "Come On Up", "Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore", and "A Girl Like You". All hits, all great songs.
These guys were SOOOOOO good, and so underrated. They had a long long string of hits that hit every vibe; hard rocking to soft ballad, to easy sippin music. They were simply outstanding. Some of the best pop music ever made.
Three fourths of the Rascals came from an earlier group called Joey D and the Starliters. In that earlier group- those Rascals also had a dude that played guitar for those Starliters by the name of Jimmy James …….. who later became known as Jimi Hendrix !🙂
Hey Harri. Yeah man, The Rascals were great. Saw them live back in the day and was blown away. They were the first band I ever heard described as "Blue-eyed soul". Check out "A Girl Like You" and "You Better Run" which was later covered by Pat Benatar. Peace.
Agreed. This is one of the rockin’est songs of all time. But the one thing you missed when you paused the song after the organ solo by Felix Cavaliere is the iconic 2.5 second dead silent pause, followed by the Rascals jumping back in right on beat and at full volume and tempo with instruments and vocals. It’s the best dead air in music.
The Rascals have been In the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame for many years now. This is why. Check out all their stuff! The Rascals Greatest Hits Album (Time Space) is/was and will be the best vinyl record you can add to your record collection along with Legend by Bob Marley. Fabulous ALBUMS!!
Grew up listening to the Rascals on the A.M. stations way back when. Check out another song that was big in 1967... "Little Bit O' Soul", by Music Explosion. It was always played at dance partys at the local swimming pool on Friday nights. Thanks Harris!
Harri your res🎉ctions and analysis are the best. The Rascals came from two towns over from my home town in North Jersey. We all followed them and loved thier music. Still do!
as known in 1966 - the young rascals - their first hit that put them on the american musical map. i was 13 and of course ran down to our local record shop and bought the 45 rpm single. felix cavaliere had a pretty unique voice. still with us at 77 years old and was part of ringo starr's all star band. and you are correct - this song was originally done by the olympics that didn't go anywhere. felix heard it on the radio - they did a remake cover and that was that
In all my years, I hadn't known this was a cover. I just headed on over and watched the Olympics do this on Shindig. Also a great version. Billy Preston was at the organ.
I also just found a video of Felix doing "It's a Beautiful Morning", apparently on some TV show, and it's incredible the chops he still has. th-cam.com/video/AvehXks60tA/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=raystevensmusic
@@barryanderson3910 it was really good too but of course the rascals version has my vote - probably because it was the first one i heard. there were quite a few 60's hits that were remakes. i didn't know carole king wrote 'pleasant valley ' sunday till 10 years after the monkees did it. although she and gerry goffin wrote so many hits for 60's groups i was not surprised.
In their cover version of Good Lovin’ the Rascals changed one chord that changed to whole harmonic flavor of the song. To my ears the changed chord seems a better fit in the chord progression. In the Olympics version I believe that it is a young Billy Preston on keyboards.
BTW, “Good Lovin’” was recorded by a group called “the Olympics” (featuring Billy Preston) the year before the Rascals recorded it in 1966. Felix Cavaliere heard it on the radio and liked it. They recorded it and it ran up to #1 on the Billboard charts. The Olympics’ version reached somewhere around 80.
This song was mandatory among Northern Jersey garage band scene. Especially when playing live on Zachary's Disco-teen TV show on one of those UHF channels 14-83. Channel #49 if I remember. Every afternoon they had another local band, Newark Area generally. Most bands played "Good Lovin'."
These guys were like a slightly diluted mix of The Rolling Stones & CCR. "Feel good" music, you know, sir? You may want to check out their "How Can I Be Sure", if you haven't already, sir. TOTALLY different vibe. I attended a social function when The (Young) Rascals were just starting out. They played for us that night, & they blew EVERYONE away. We were all up dancing before the 1st song was 1/2 way through. Thanks for the great memories, sir!
Glad you really dug this. I wàs a big fan of theirs since Groovin. Believe this is the only version. Felix Cavaliere is a fantastic singer, believe he's still performing. People Gotta be Free is great so is How can I be Sure tho that's sung by Eddy Brigatti. I've been Lonely too Long. Their in Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and sure deserve it.!!!!
LOL! This was the first single record I ever bought and drove my parents crazy because I played it constantly. My mother said if I was going to dance around the house to this, I had to be useful and sweep, dust and do the dishes!
Harri, you took your last break at one of the best parts of the song. There was a half-second of silence before they came back blasting "Good Lovin'". Normally you back up a few seconds after your pauses, but you didn't here and that pause was lost. Nevertheless, another good reaction.
It was kind of amazing timing to pause right at the dramatic pause in the song I said oh no Then just came back in as if they were just waiting for you to start again, hahaha Great reaction as always anyway
Harri...fantastic reaction as usual. I hope you will react to one of my faves from this band, their first hit, in 1965...I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore.
Yes. I remember Ed Sullivan introducing them as “The Young Rascals”. They rocked the Ed Sullivan theatre dressed as some kind of Bowery kids in short pants and striped knee socks.
Gotta just luv that soulful voice of Felix's. And he still got it! In an interview, they said that Otis Redding had to peek in while they were recording to check out if the Rascals were really a white group. Luv it! Rascal fan forever.
If you ever saw "Moonlighting", the episode called "Atomic Shakespeare" saw Bruce Willis singing this in the wedding scene. If you haven't seen it, check it out---it's a riot!
THIS was the hit version - the guys who did it originally are relagated to a footnote! They also hit with "Groovin'", "I've Been Lonely Too Long" and "A Beautiful Morning." Another Blue Eyed Soul that rocked around this time was "Gimme Some Lovin'" by The Spencer Davis Group (which featured Steve Winwood). Both were in heavy rotation and big hits on soul stations!
This was a HUGE Number One in 1966 for The Young Rascals! It's gone on to reach iconic status. If you had to explain all the things that were fun about the 60's, this song would do the trick. One of my first actual memories was hearing this song on the radio. I always smile when I hear this one!
Good points Harri. Definitely a feel good song and they were ahead of their time. One of the best songs ever according to me. Felix Cavaliere is a great singer. Their in Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and sure deserve to be. Big fan of theirs since the beginning.
Harry. You must do a video of Rosetta Tharpe; one of the most influential black female guitarists and singers of the 40s, 50s, and 60s. The video of her in England in the early 60s is a great place to start
I remember this from the time, have always liked it, but hearing it just now I am so impressed by the mix: the way the guitar riffs and kbds are just brought to the fore at strategic points is very well done IMO. Not subtle, but effective for a transistor radio with a 3" speaker, LOL.
Pulling into our local A&W Root Beer Drive-In, in a 58 Chevy, my girlfriend riding shotgun, with this song kicking on the AM. The nostalgia is grabbin' me!
"People Got To Be Free" and "Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore" also are Young Rascal monster hits of the 60s. You can still see Felix sing them. Have some Good Lovin'. Also, the San Francisco Band named "It's a Beautiful Day," plays a different song called "Good Lovin'." Check out their song "White Bird." Speaking of San Francisco Bands, "Quicksilver Messenger Service" has a song called "Fresh Air," you'll love. Add "What About Me?" by them. "Gold and Silver," too. Dino Valenti, who wrote the first two, also wrote the 60's anthem, "Get Together," sung by The Youngbloods with Jesse Colin Young on vocals. Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Santana, Big Brother and the Holding Company (with Janis Joplin), and Sopwith Camel are more San Francisco Bands. Their anthem was "Are You Going to San Francisco,?" Rock on!
To all of us Northern New Jersey'ers in '67 surely remember the UHF station out of Newark with Zacherleys Disco-teen television show, you all know the live band of the day HAD to play this one if they were to have any chance of winning.
One of their little known songs, "Temptations 'Bout to Get Me", has got to be one of their most soulful grooves. The vocals of Felix & Eddie, plus the arrangement will blow ya away!
I don't believe there is any other version! Perfection is hard to duplicate. Its like "unchained melody" who sings it with more heart and soul than Bobby Hatfield? Some come close,But he can't be duplicated! His voice and talent were a perfect math for those heartfelt lyrics!
I don't think it was that well known. It didn't get any higher than #86 on the charts at a time when almost all the airplay was given to the top 40. People Got to Be Free
A Girl Like You
Lonely Too Long
Greatest time to grow up. Good reaction Harry. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
A Girl Like You sounds like half Rascals and half Steely Dan, it's terrific.
You knocked it out of the park with this one.
Great tune that was played on the radio for years. Legendary. Who would not love this unforgettable song.🎤
I was 11 in 1966 and I still remember every word. Doctor, doctor, I got the fever, you got the cure. Great stuff!
Me too, I was 15, loved it then love it now!
I also, was 21 in the military.
I was 12 then, loved that song and still do! That Hammond organ sound, wow!
This is one of those songs that ALWAYS makes you feel better!
Felix cavalier lead singer.1966best year for music period.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! More Rascals! 😎🎶❤ People Got To Be Free and How Can I Be Sure?
Great music from the 60s.
NOW YOU'RE TALKING!!! This was a MEGA HIT in 1966!! Felix Cavaliere is the singer and playing that killer Hammond B-3 organ.
Love the Rascals, one of my 60's favorite groups. They are awesome
Such a great tune!!! Can’t help but move!! If you’ve never seen The Big Chill, you really should give it a watch!
The original version of "Good Lovin'" was by The Olympics, a soul group in Los Angeles. The Rascals took their arrangement and just rocked it up.
America's first true blue eyed soul band. You're one of the very few on TH-cam who react to this band. These guys deserve to recognized for what they were. The Rascals, “In The Midnight Hour”, fantastic!!!!
They were so hot in the 60's
These guys were SOOOOOO good, and so underrated. They had a long long string of hits that hit every vibe; hard rocking to soft ballad, to easy sippin music. They were simply outstanding. Some of the best pop music ever made.
Amen & amen!
Just makes you want to move!!!! Love them!
These guys were the greatest Jersey City , NJ garage band when I was a kid! You are listening to a piece of my early teens!
This song cooks!
Three fourths of the Rascals came from an earlier group called Joey D and the Starliters. In that earlier group- those Rascals also had a dude that played guitar for those Starliters by the name of Jimmy James …….. who later became known as Jimi Hendrix !🙂
St 4??
I was a musically precocious 13 year old. This was my music. Loved it.
The Rascals, The Young Rascals, all their songs are great
Well chosen JK Clare!! 👍
Great 60’s song that was very popular & if you heard it playing you couldn’t help but dance 💃🎶☮️
Groovin
Hey Harri. Yeah man, The Rascals were great. Saw them live back in the day and was blown away. They were the first band I ever heard described as "Blue-eyed soul". Check out "A Girl Like You" and "You Better Run" which was later covered by Pat Benatar. Peace.
Love your reaction videos. I truly appreciate you
Harri, The Rascals had probably the best drummer in Dino Danelli.
A "Friday" song indeed - lift your spirits and get you ready for the weekend.
You got to go through their greatest hits. You won't be disappointed!!!
Yeah, that B3 was one of the best instruments to be a foundation of the music arts !!
HarriBest get the live version of this song on the Ed Sullivan show!!
I was 3 years old when I first danced to this song...
The Rascals have been In the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame for many years now. This is why.
Check out all their stuff!

Love this song. That Hammond organ, baby.
Yeah, baby!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🎉🔥 FIRE! Their in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, they surely deserve it. One of my favorite groups in my 60 plus yrs of listening to music
They went from the Young Rascals to the Rascals
All right ! New Jersey’s very own . Good to see someone’s listening to the Rascals . You need to hear A Girl Like You my favorite Rascals tune .
It was a huge song in the movie The Big chill which was a huge movie started a lot of acting careers
A classic 60's song. Such energy!
And where's that energy in rock music now?
Welcome to my youth. Every Rascals album was like a greatest hits ... one after another.
First band i saw live when I was 14 years old. I'm 69.
Same w/me. They performed in Honolulu way back then.
Back in the early 80's I went to many live band 50's/60's dances....this song and also Twist and Shout by the Beatles were my favorites!
This song just makes you happy!
Grew up listening to the Rascals on the A.M. stations way back when.
Check out another song that was big in 1967... "Little Bit O' Soul", by Music Explosion.
It was always played at dance partys at the local swimming pool on Friday nights. Thanks Harris!
Great fun basic rock song. I always liked it. Lots of energy! Good lovin'
Harri your res🎉ctions and analysis are the best. The Rascals came from two towns over from my home town in North Jersey. We all followed them and loved thier music. Still do!

loved their late drummer Dino
Excellent choice JK. I love this song.
The Greatful Dead also covered this song in the '70's. That might be the version you are thinking of.
Are you sure you have the spelling of the band right? Shouldn't' it be Greightfull?
The song has been covered a lot.
This is the version I like the most.

Oops Barry 🙈🙈
As long as he doesn’t stop in the middle of a guitar solo. That’s anathema to
guitarists! 🎸
Your reactions to these old gems is what's fantastic, you're fun!
The Rascals were the best group I ever seen in person 😊
Great one Harri. Wondering when you were going to react to this song.
Harri...fantastic reaction as usual. I hope you will react to one of my faves from this band, their first hit, in 1965...I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore.
their late drummer just made this song ROCK
Yes. I remember Ed Sullivan introducing them as “The Young Rascals”. They rocked the Ed Sullivan theatre dressed as some kind of Bowery kids in short pants and striped knee socks.
They were known as the young rascals then dropped the "young"
Harri, great reaction. Try “You Better Run” by The Young Rascals. It’s actually better in my opinion, if you can believe it.
Gotta just luv that soulful voice of Felix's. And he still got it! In an interview, they said that Otis Redding had to peek in while they were recording to check out if the Rascals were really a white group. Luv it! Rascal fan forever.
My favourite song of all-time
Talk about "Catchy"! Back in the day, everyone's garage band HAD to play this....at least twice. Everybody Loved this song.
If you ever saw "Moonlighting", the episode called "Atomic Shakespeare" saw Bruce Willis singing this in the wedding scene. If you haven't seen it, check it out---it's a riot!

From 1979 The Romantics did a song "What I like About You" that reminds me of this, so much energy.
What a great song…I myself was 7yrs old when this came out so I grew up with it also.
I never get tired of hearing it.
Originally by The Olympics. Saw The Rascals in NYC Twice - They were great.
Hello little brother, always good to see you . I have a few requests

If you liked this song you should try the Soul Survivors and a song they did called Expressway to Your Heart sounds a lot like the Young Rascals.
I remember this from the time, have always liked it, but hearing it just now I am so impressed by the mix: the way the guitar riffs and kbds are just brought to the fore at strategic points is very well done IMO. Not subtle, but effective for a transistor radio with a 3" speaker, LOL.

You have to react to this song Live on Ed Sullivan and watch how incredible drummer Dino Danelli is! He passed yesterday RIP
You should watch the live version from Ed Sullivan show. Great drumming.
Yes, I agree!
sadly he passed away last year

1966. The greatest year for music.from the greatest decade the 60$
so simple so true
Morning 🌄 Mr B ,when we dig up the past ,how much is here and now, regards to you and yours,, M Mangawhero
The Olympics had the first well known version of this song, that came out in 1965......The Rascals did a good version though.
I don't think it was that well known. It didn't get any higher than #86 on the charts at a time when almost all the airplay was given to the top 40. I was seventeen at the time and very much into music, and I hadn't heard the song before the Young Rascals did it.
The only thing I knew the Olympics for was "Western Movies" which was their only top ten hit. The only other record they had that hit the top 40 (although #40 was as high as it got) was "The Bounce" and I don't think a lot of people would remember that either.
Of course they were from L.A. so some of their songs in the lower half of the top 100 may have got more airplay in that area than in the rest of the country.
Yes I believe it's there song . remember when this came out
I was in the first grade, and this song was played a lot on AM station's, that's for sure
There was an earlier version by The Olympics
