Here I am, an American college student, taking a study break during my internship in Mongolia, watching a Scottish Highlander tell me how to become a ninja. I'd like to thank the 21st century for being so weird, and I'd like to thank you, Tom, for helping it be that way.
Hello! My name is Rudar, I live in Curitiba, in the state of Paraná, Brazil. I had the pleasure of visiting Edinburgh in 2019 and I simply "came home". Since then, I've been looking for all the information I can about Scotland, as if I needed to relearn the country my soul belongs to. I don't know what your beliefs are, but I personally feel that I've lived in this place, I've been Scottish in another life. It's a feeling that goes beyond a simple liking. My soul cries out to come home. I found your channel thanks to my research on kilts and since then, I watch them one by one, sometimes repeatedly. Its content is excellent precisely because of the simplicity and frankness it conveys. Apart from that I learn a lot about "my soul country". I thank you and send my hugs and best energies from Brazil.
It's fascinating to see how every culture in humanity has found a way to work with sticks. It's like there's a universal connection we all share with the simplicity and versatility of a stick.
I call what you describe as forrest warrior monk by a different name, Wilderness Martial Arts. I describe it thusly: Wilderness martial arts is a call back to the original way in which great warriors of old would train... I want to grow this niche more and I think you are well on the way to helping people out that want to train in a martial art while enjoying a more natural environment. Cheers!
Fun fact about archery based repetitive strain injuries back in the prime of the English longbow men who's bows had draw weights upto and sometimes exceeding 140 pounds would experience drastic changes in their skeletal system their ribcage would stretch and the bone density in their hold arm would double all to cope with the comical amount of stress they would go through during their trains and battles
I wanted to come back because it has been almost a year now. I was 300lbs in high school. After graduation i struggled to lose weight. I was inconsistent, in and out of the gym. I managed to lose my first 50lbs or so but stayed at 250 for awhile. I found this video and it inspired me to start working out at home more. I have always had alot of functional strength because I have always been active. Climbing, hiking, archery, blade smithing. I started workimg out at home using my own body weight and using alot of the techniques shown in the video. The idea of "Forest Monk training" inspired me to rethink exercise and fitness. Today I am 180lbs and I feel the most capable I have ever been. Workout outside, develop a meaningful connection with your body, find your flow! Thank you for this video.
Thanks for sharing your journey friend! I'm very happy to hear this video was inspiring :) Keep up the training and keep having fun and flowing with it :) Cheers Tom
When I was 20 in 1982 I had a fascination with sticks, bows, camping, survival, I made my own sticks out of Ash, Hazel and others I also made my own arrows, awhile later this developed into armoured combat with swords, spears, I made my own shields too, and joined a Viking/Saxon group. Stick fighting is great fun, I still have many staffs, sticks and walking sticks. Keep the videos coming 👍
LOVE your videos. Thank you for being thoughtful, playful, goofy, obvious, and profound. It's a joy to watch everything you do and remember my very brief time in the beautiful highlands of Scotland.
Every time I watch one of your videos I get filled with the overwhelming sensation to snap the handle off my broom, throw on my kilt and sprint into the woods. Seriously though you are a massive inspiration to me, love your videos man. Edit: btw, where do you get your staves/staffs from?
haha! Glad to hear it man! My main walking staff I made from a Rowan sapling. Another is a Japanes, oak Jo staff, another a rattan and oak bo staff I bought online
@@stefans.8850 As someone that has made very many staves ever since I was little kid running through the woods behind my house, this. Finding the right wood, the correct grain, practicing and learning to carve your own designs and make it truly yours, is not only a journey in itself but much more personal than clicking add to cart.
I love your channel. I live with slow chronic heart failure. Staff exercises have kept me fit and balanced. I have like, 6 or 7? 3 oak staffs (1 jo) some fire hardened, beaver eaten driftwood....Can't remember. I live in a forest in northern Québec and find solace in nature. You inspire me every time, watched your vids many times and passed them on to friends.
I love your channel, Tom. That's a beautiful area you have for your outdoor activities. I was born in Aberdeen, but have lived in Australia since I was 4, am 48 now. I certainly have highlander blood in my veins and hope to see Scotland someday. Cheers 🍻
Just bumped into your channel Wow, what a man! I have been waiting for you my whole life 1. Irish accent & humor 100% 2. Manliness 100% 3. Nature loving human 100% ❤
Missed out going to Archery today because I have no strength this morning. Wish I had now, even if it was for the social aspect. Fitness, Focus, Social. Great video as always. What a legend.
You saying finding flow is like learning a new instrument is perfectly accurate! As a drummer, my job is to translate flow into something that gets bodies moving. It requires a calm, zen-like state of mind, coordination of all 4 limbs, and maintaining precise timing. Flow comes naturally when those things are combined properly and turbulence results when it's lost.
I started following you when you first started discussing Highlanders. I got fascinated by the clans 4-5 years ago. Been awhile and I’ve just come back to your channel. Everything your talking about in this video is everything I’m looking for. Love your content brother. Same concept across the pond, in the Allegheny National Forest.
Never stop doing what you do, my friend. Your earlier videos changed me and moved me to better my life, and I've been getting loads of inspiration from you since I first started watching. You're a real treasure!
Loved the generally acting like a weirdo comment! All the best people do. Wish I'd found your channel before getting chronic illnesses and could've done at least some of your ideas
That was very interesting. And as French stick-swingers we are very impressed with your bâton Français techniques, you even do something very akin to a (or "the") Rose Couverte in the Flow part, that's very enjoyable to watch and must be even more to practice. I wonder if I'm not going to buy a pair of gym rings.
What can one say.....? Other than.... TERRIFIC video! Thanks for SHARING! You are the spark that has set this old boy alight to have a last fling at living! Cheers! 👍✌️🇬🇧
Quite inspiring aye. I noticed gyms never done it for me. Always felt too boxed in and such. But getting out into nature really does change that. I used to cycle a lot and it kept me fit, cycling down canals and such. Perhaps I should invest in a bike again and get out there. And maybe even pick up a stick or two… good thing sticks are everywhere
Wow Bless You Cherished Friend and Role Model! Just what I need to remember, absorb and implement. Thank you for sharing your Forest Warrior Monk Training.
Great video, Tom! In your studies of Warrior Monk Traditions, you've probably learned about the Yamabushi of Japan. I have studied Japanese martial arts for years that have strong ties with the Yamabushi. I enjoyed your video very much because of the similarity with what I've studied in the past!
nice. i like the archery part. i do speed shooting. no handed rolls with the bow and with m4 rifles. or any other weapon. archery in samurai armor. in full ninja gear in the mt hood forest. this popped up in my recommended videos. but ya you could like my combat archery - archery of the ninja 2018 video. but some i am in samurai armor in the forest on mt hood by the river doing speed shooting and so on. i make videos to. we are both warriors at heart. i did bujinkan budo taijutsu and ninjutsu and samurai bujutsu formally etc. for many years and solo training in the mountains for over a decade. keep up the good work bro. always good to meet another fellow warrior.
Aaahhhh, another awesome video Tom!!! Thanks so much for sharing your content with us and giving us a chance to become a bad ass Forest Warrior Monk!!!🏹🗡
Truly a big fan...I really appreciate all your work you put in for our entertainment..I watch a video every morning before work.and have been learning alot... I definitely look forward to new videos for my morning routine
Thank you! The plan is to one day develop an online training course where anyone could follow along. Starting to experiment with lessons on the Patreon page currently :)
Thank You. Excellent and creative adaptation of various warrior techniques and exercises. I wish I had access to such grand and varied scenery to practice. Wonderful !!
There's also a lot to be said about the meditative aspects and flow involved with music. Either playing an instrument or singing, it's a very zen feeling. Plus singing is very good for breathing and lung/core strength while using instruments can help with different aspects of more fine motor functions. You could even classify that part of the exercise routine as Making Noise
bo staff and han bo were always my faves when i used to do nin jitsu....many years ago, stick at the training mate, you will regret stopping if you do...i promise you will.
Thank you for these videos. I practice with my staff when I am watching over my chickens while they free range because of you. I'll have to get or make some gymnastics rings now. =)
Absolutely love the video. Watching you with the staff and bow made me think of you as the Scottish or Highland Robin Hood. Love to see more staff work and definitely more of your Highlander content.
forest warrior monk is perfect! how else do you describe being a weirdo in the woods! 🤷🏻 really love the point about how learning the foundations unlocks play! i feel like that's a key part of indigenous and ancestral wisdom found in mythology and initiation rituals!
As a 5’2” 90 lb female.. in excellent physical condition.. who does cross country running and follows a daily exercise regime.. Would like to learn the forest monk training.. however.. some of this seems beyond my ability.. Do you have adjustments that would be appropriate for someone my size? Really appreciate your videos.. although these are mainly directed at males.. there are women like me who have joined your tribe.. we believe we could do this if it were made a wee bit variated for smaller ones like me.. Thank you💜💙
What a great video. Your content is very useful and inspiring. I'm nearing my sixties and soon i'll be doing this. I already do it indoors, the the big wide outdoors beckons.
you've got it all figured out man. i live in Manchester and wish i had places like these to go - i can visit the peak district easy enough but you certainly can't get away with doing things like shooting a bow there. wild camping options are limited too. during covid lockdowns i debated moving to dumfries and living nearer wilderness... kinda wish i'd done it now

Not a weirdo... for sure, what most of us really want to do.
What’s so wrong about being a weirdo
