-12 °C is not much. Actually it is quite warm winter temperature and absolutely normal working temperature for internal combustion engine. Mediterraneaners will not agree, I guess, but I doubt if they know what the real winter is. :-)

Well ...I did not mean that the temperature would be especially cold? Just normal update of the working conditions at the time. My personal opinion is that -12 is very close to the ideal weather in horse logging.
Usually about -25 is about the limit when we stop working . Mostly because steel loses it´s durability( hmm... not shure about the word??..) after that and you don´t get much exersize on that cart.

Doesn't the gas powered loader arm defeat the whole pupose of horses over a tractor?

Nope . Its not the krane that rips the ground in big machines either . ( sorry for the lack of technical dictionary....) Few advantages are forex. fuel consumption ,That Honda uses about 4-5 litres per 8 hour gasoline, even a little machine about the same size uses at least 15-20 litres per 8 hour.
Skidding, Horse drawn wheel don´t skid ,they only roll along , exeption : down hill as breaking they can slide a little. Machine wheels are skidding more or less all the time and rip the ground open . Off course in the winter the machine is more gentle for the ground but horses dont leave any tracks in the winter .
The price of this job don´t make you rich and if i had to load by hand it just dont cover the expenses any more .
The only negative thing is the noise , i would love to work in total silence listening horses an myself breathing but maybe the electric technology gets better and in the future we could use electricity to pump the hydraulics? So waiting for the big leap on the battery tecnology.
Hope you get something out of this ,as i said ,my technical dictionary is missing a lot of words.
