      @@MemeLord42069 absolutely, there's the one track that sticks with people and makes them come back to the album and realize what they missed. Ye had Amazing from 808s, and Black Skinhead from Yeezus, and obviously Bino has Bonfire from his EP and 3005

      @@MemeLord42069 it def wasn't misunderstood at the time lmao this came out when I was a junior in high school and was one of the most popular albums that year. Just cause pitchfork (who is always shit) gave it a bad score, it doesnt mean it was misunderstood. If anything, this album earned him more respect in the industry. This was basically his Watching Movies and the only justifiable criticism he really got for this was that some of the songs were pretty uninspired/not fully fleshed out to the point where you couldn't tell if they were meant to be interludes or songs. Camp wasn't very good minus a few songs and he was seen as a corny punchline rapper by a lot of people but then this project legitimized him.
      Also, I love Bino, but dude isn't even remotely in the same league as Kanye musically or culturally imo lol theres really no comparison at all minus his own one he made sort of as a joke

      @@sk33t_38 well, the number of artists that can actually be compared to Kanye in terms of impact and relevance is extremely small. But they're both very much on the same wave, much of which can be spoken for by Kanye's influence, but not all. To say that there are similarities in some of their discographies and their reception is not an overreach, per popularity at the times of release and how that popularity changed beyond album singles as well as those albums being turning points in each artist's respective career

      Yeeeeah. But you shouldn’t have to draw some (very, very) abstract theories on why an album is good. Cal from Dissect really reaches sometimes and puts his own theories out there and people grasp to that as an “Ah Ha!” Moment. BTI had some great songs, some okay songs, and…I don’t need a whole screenplay to say that a wetsuit. Or the internet doesn’t actually mean anything. That’s super lame, and I’m happy that I have Donald Glover has great stuff in other mediums.

    The insane beat switch in Zealots of Stockholm continues to terrify me. I was in the back seat of our car on the way home from Florida. It was about 3:30 AM and I had headphones on, playing Because the Internet while I slept. I was awake enough to know we just parked in a truck stop so my mom could use the bathroom. I dozed back to sleep and just as we were leaving, the beat switch happened and SCARED THE SHIT OUT OF ME. I woke up panting, almost throwing my headphones. I’ll never forget that when I hear that song.

    This is my favorite rap album. Came out during my highschool years and even now in my mid 20s it feels more relevant than ever. The longing for connection, even when everyone in the world is a finger press away, the everpresent desire for genuine affection and gatherings, and the inevitable disappointment and angst when you realize that there's more to life than just "chilling".
    No Exit gives me chills, it's everything I've felt wrapped so beautifully, and Life the Biggest Troll really puts it all into perspective.

Either by coincidence or, as I think is more likely, entirely on purpose, the main character in the BTI screenplay is only referred to as "The Boy," similarly making it so that he could be anyone. Interesting stuff. Love this album, glad you enjoyed it!

    About the Drake/Fantano thing in the opening thoughts because it seems you were missing some of it.
    Drake randomly sent the "Your existence is a light 1" etc. to Fantano. Fantano decided to make a joke video where he created fake DMs from Drake that were actually nice and included a vegan recipe. It was a pretty funny video and because of the nature of Fantano's second channel nobody would've ever known if it was real or fake outside of Fantano and Drake. Then Drake posted the real DMs online where you can see he was kinda just being an ass, even though Fantano ignored it and just made a joke about it.
    I personally wouldn't say Fantano did anything wrong there and I thought it was pretty funny. I do love that quote from the Kendrick song though.

    • @ezql_
      @ezql_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The video was actually a pretty clever way to use that to get some views without exposing Drake, no one would know that there was an actual DM if he didn't post it after

    • @bobthepoppop
      @bobthepoppop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm glad I was wrong about Fantano's side. Seems like he did a solid and somewhat tried to side-step Drake being an ass. But Drake went the extra mile to 'fix the problem' lol...
      The whole situation is so bizarre to me 🤷‍♂️

    Im glad you liked 3005. This song was a huge hit back in the day and listening to it now gives me great nostalgia since it's one of those songs that's beloved by all by not played much in the modern day. It takes me back to old days when times were simpler.

    I’m so happy you finally got to review this!! It’s one of my personal favorites from last decade for sure. I know you’re definitely booked with albums for a long time, but I wanted to throw a suggestion out there for you. “This old dog” album by Mac DeMarco. It has a psychedelic/indie type of production. Definitely a refreshing sounding album.

    BTI is like, incredibly ambitious in terms of what CG wanted to do with the project as a whole, and all the short films, and all his interviews as 'The Boy' at the time........... but like, at the end of the day even if u think all that was dumb, the album itself slaps so hard

    I almost never comment on videos, feeling that they are often insignificant or overlooked, but this time I will go out of my way to do it. You seem in touch with your community, and that might give my recommendation the chance to be seen.
    This is a 5AM type of thought that came after a 2 hour session of listening to him, and I have literally no idea if it has been proposed before, but what I would like to recommend is that you give Bon Iver a listen. You might be familiar with his sound from some of Kanye's classics such as Lost In The World, so why not give it a shot.
    He is very innovative, and his music; having many layers, subjects and metaphors; would certainly produce an interesting analysis.
    Having said that, I would also like to congratulate you for the quality content, and thank you for the time invested in order to provide it to us.

    • @bobthepoppop
      @bobthepoppop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Bon Iver has come up before... he's on the list. The trouble with 'the list' is that it's so massive at this point. It basically consists of every album I have NOT heard lol... so being on the list doesn't amount to much anymore, unfortunately. Which kinda kills me because I'm open to hearing all of these projects. It's a lot of fun going through them. Just all comes down to time 🤷‍♂️

    Can’t wait to see you experience his future albums. Awaken my love is a fucking masterpiece of an album, but very disconnected from anything else he’s ever made and standalone. 3.15.20 on the otherhand I feel is very underappreciated and misunderstood. To me it works as an amazing companion/continuation of the themes presented on this album. An amazing album that sadly got overshadowed by one of the Weeknds best projects.

    Hell yes Bob Im so happy you dug the album and I just knew you would be someone that would really get how wild and creatively ambitious this album is.
    Also on The Worst Guys, I always looked at it as kind of a duality of this. “All she need wassum” is obviously referring to dick but in context of the whole song I feel like it just may as well be a girl just looking for love and Gambino isn’t looking to give either one regardless because of his perception of how everything is socially. She doesnt get whatever it is she wants at the end but he leaves it just ambiguous enough to be a song about unrequited love but also surface level just a thirsty chick lol he leaves it up to you to decide

    • @bobthepoppop
