I usually watch your videos to learn about new concepts and ideas in fields completely unrelated to what I do, so this is the first time I actually watched a topic on something related to my field of study and work (Computer Engineering). And it has been such a great experience to see how elegantly you guys approached some of the concepts I've been trying to explain family and friends many times (because the question "so what exactly do you do?" or "how do computers actually work?" naturally pop). This gave me a very unique perspective on how much "simplification" is actually done on the subject to fit in a video, and how accurately and brilliantly the essence of the topic is captured. I already had a great level of respect for all the hard work that's being put in these videos, but it just went to the next level. Thanks for all the awesome work in educating the world.
I am a computer engineer as well and just a huge tech nerd in general. I can relate so much to spending hours on end explaining to my family how computers work but to no avail. I've had to explain to my grandmother multiple times what the volume buttons do on her phone

Not all transistors are so small. It depends on electric current which should go through them. So transistors in computer memory can be very small, but transistors used for switching electric current in your electrobike are much much bigger.

Since this video has been released, transistors have decreased in size furthermore. An iPhone XS or later has a transistor size of 7 nm, which was pretty revolutionary since it was one of the only devices to be mass-produced with such an architecture. In the past year, however, 7 nm transistors are becoming more prevalent in PCs. In 2019, 5 nm technology has become commercialized, though not on a massive scale. Even now, Samsung has announced they plan to commercialize 3 nm technology. The important thing to note here is that we design these transistors often decades before they become commercial. For example, 10 nm technology was first designed in the 1980s before being created in 2002 and commercialized in 2016. Currently, the smallest transistor created is at 2.3 nm, which may signal that we are at an end for transistors, considering how the disparity between the size of created transistors and the size of commercialized transistors has diminished greatly. Currently, some major nanotech research firms have considered 14-angstrom transistors (14Å, one angstrom is 10^-10 meters, 1 ten-billionth), which is about half the width of a DNA helix, by around 2025. However, whether or not we will be able to actually realize this is up for debate for the reasons mentioned in this video.

Fun fact about CPU transistors: You keep hearing the term "(X)nm transistors" in Intel/AMD chips, but many people don't know what that means. The 'nm' is nanometer, which is used in microscopic measurements, so that means transistors are exceedingly small these days... The Apple Silicon chips have 5 nanometer transistors and Apple says they're developing 2 nanometer ones right now. Let's make this simple, how thick is a strand of hair in nanometers? About 90,000... Substantial number, yes? Now, how thick is a single strand of DNA? 0.90 nanometers... It’s kind of hard to explain with words though… Basically, addition and subtraction are very similar processes, and no one would build a dedicated circuit for just subtraction, they would just double up on the addition circuit.

just to be a nerd, a quantum graphics card would not really work very well or even be really practical. it would make more sense to make a quantum cpu. but even then it still wouldnt a massive change. sadly quantum computers and gaming dont really work well together.

Xp Level Googolplex watch some of Myren Eario’s videos (especially the one about precise piston timings) and you’ll realize that Minecraft’s code fore redstone can feel complex enough to be like quantum mechanics. Like the way pistons actually extend in 2 gameticks even though everyone thought it was 3, but they wait 1 gametick before extending if powered by a self-converting piston extension (aka block 36). But it also can seem like 3 gameticks because certain tile-tick blocks like repeaters lose 1 gametick of delay when activated by a player input

I suppose youre superimposed Heres the run through: Current technology compute with using +/- charge. (With electron or without) 0 or 1. When it comes to logic gates = guard, door, hall monitor, etc. (whether or not it has 0 or 1), its too small to the point an electron can pass through making the transistor (the reader, identifier, etc) think it has a + or - when its the opposite. Quantum tech uses positioning on top of that. Positions are constantly changing and isnt affected by change that much (only when observed) Think of you jumping up and down and a dark room. No one can tell if you are on the floor or not until they snap a picture. Snapping a picture will reveal your current state at the time of observation. But since you are continuously jumping up and down, your state could be different when observed. Entanglement is basically if theres another one jumping with you. You are off the floor when they have just touched and landed on the floor. Snapping a picture of any of you will tell the observer the current state of the other as it is the opposite state. So quantum tech can calculate a lot. So one is going on a charge based (0 or 1, +/- charge) only 2 while the other have different states such as horizontal or vertical with entanglement tells loads of details. Is it left, right, up, or down? Compared to only positive or negative? 2nd, they can have pairs so theres even more data. So we can have the same exact storage, but the processing power is far more. Current processing: 1 atom = 2 states (+/-). Think of morse code (dots and dashes). Think about how long youd have to spell a simple letter let alone a word (this is how the computers read = binary) Quantum processing: 1 atom = 4 positioning + entanglement (4 ways and predictive info on another atom = less time deciphering) So basically this is like typing with a keyboard (not even T9 keyboard with multiple presses to get the correct letter) This is btw how the schrodinger's cat is. Although idk why they used cat. I understood it easier when they explained it with "if a bear farts in the forest and no one was around, does the bear fart?" But if thats confusing, its just this: imagine if someone suddenly shows up with a film crew and starts observing your daily routine, would you still go about it like you would if they werent there? Theres a reason why wildlife film crew try to stay as far away from the subject as possible. Not only for safety but its to not disrupt them. What if animals end up asking for pets? How are you going to document their natural habitat? "Spend most of their time being petted by humans" Thats how i understood superpositioning observation

Otherwise known as binary While quantum calculates using superpositioning which has 4 combination states (16 in total) couple that with charge and entanglement, you can have more possible data compared to only having 0 or 1. As for the whole schrodinger's cat, the problem with checking superpositioning is it is influenced by checking. To put simply, in order to look at something, you apply light to it, typically. But doing so will DIRECTLY affect the particles causing it to get charged or change its direction/position. Our eyes perceive protons. If you think of them as basketballs, you would have the balls be passed to you and the other person. If the ball doesnt come in contact with anything during the pass and goes directly from your hands to the other guy, there is nothing. Its a complete vacuum, you cant see. But if the ball touches something, that will change BOTH the direction, speed, and energy of BOTH the ball and the thing it hits. Then we know that there is something there but the fact that we had to interact with it to know that there is something there, we completely change its natural state. What if the thing that we hit was first suspended and now its moving about? What if it was spinning counterclockwise but now weve hit it, its spinning clockwise? What if it is only moving up and down and now weve interacted with it, it is now moving left to right too? We would conclude that these are their REAL states which they arent. That is why the video talks about superpositioning as this unknown variable. Why it is changing from red to blue and the spins are also different. Because we cant ever know because even observing it is like interacting with it. The reason being is that we are working in such small scale that protons are big enough to affect them. Instead of being hit with a small pebble or even the size of a and grain, you are using a basketball. If it goes through, there is only space, if it bounces back, there is something there. If its sand against paper, it would not move the paper if sand is thrown at it. But the things we are dealing with in quantum dimensions are so minuscule that protons are waaaay bigger and that you are basically throwing a basketball up against that suspended paper. That basketball may even phase through that paper giving the illusion that there was nothing there at all (dark matter) but the paper is now shredded, flown elsewhere and dragged by the basketball and falling along the way. Yet, the ball has experienced no significant change. To the guy on the otherside (the recipient of the ball), he might not even have to shift to try and catch the ball which results to having the perception that there was nothing in between him/her and you. Sorry if i used space and dark matter to explain the scales and why we cant figure out quantum nature. This video talked about how we have reached the limit in which compures can process information as we can only process 2 bits of info per data (0 or 1). The dimensions are too small now that even electrons are phasing through the molecules and giving a false read. So we use smaller placeholders instead of electrons, nuetrons and protons. But due to their small scales and our instruments to register them are big, we are influencing how these new placeholders are behaving. But theres an advantage for that since they can hold more information than just the 2 bits. Our observations can directly manipulate them with not much effort too. Its just predicting them is the hardest part. Right now we currently are in the stage of late 19th early 20th century computers. Their transistors, breakers, resistors, levers and switches and much much more(these are all i recognise in electronic components) are so gigantic that they cant have more than 1kilobyte/megabyte of data storage. Until we adapt our tech to no longer use atomic dimensions but quantum, we will still be throwing baskeballs against a thin sheet of paper instead of grains of sands.

Not exactly, the most difficult part of quantum computing is actually operating them. They can successfully create multi qbit processors and supercool them to run effectively but they are having trouble with the programming. Right now they have to be programmed using complex algorithms just to actually get usable information out of them, and each different problem being computed must be individually programmed. Right now lockheed martin is using a 512qbit D-wave 2 and google is using an experimental 1024(i think)qbit D-wave 2. At this point they have not been able to compute anything complex, accurately or on a repeatable basis so it's still very early days. But I honestly think this is next stage in human advancement without a doubt.

Code: The Hidden Language of Computer Hardware and Software Book by Charles Petzold I got pretty deep into this one myself. Really enjoyed it. Took a break at around chapter sixteen or seventeen. Once he establishes basic logic gates, the complexity picks up pretty quickly. Important note: This book covers computers as we know them today (when the book was written actually). I don't believe it covers the quantim bits. Even still, just understanding bits first can help shed some light on what they're discussing in the video here.
Quantum computers *can optimize chemistry production.* Yes it can run chemistry Crysis, too ! We could have bio-degradable plastics that were calculated in a quantum computer. We need this. Nature needs this. And the marine animals need this very much too !
Well maybe. The main problem with that is that plastics are so useful to use BECAUSE they're hard to break down. One of the biggest uses of plastic is in food packaging, where its most useful property is the ability to resist biodegredation. Any plastic that is discovered that CAN be easily broken down by bacteria will fail to do its job properly, or at least could not be used for food storage.
We already do have a lot of materials that can replace plastic in an ecological aspect, however the production costs are dictating the use of materials over their properties.
I went 1 full curse in university, read many little articles. Still can't understand how to use the fucking Atom somewhere running randomly and no one know what it is, In calculating or computing. I just don't get it.
S4BER Superposition- allows you to hold all possible combinations of bits in a single combination. That basically allows you to hold more data without taking too much space. It's also good for quickly extracting something. Entanglement- you don't need to check each and every bit to know the full combination. For example, in the binary number 1011, a normal computer will have to check each digit one by one to confirm that the number is 1011. But a quantum computer just needs to check the first digit (i.e. 1) and it will instantly know the full number. Qubit manipulation- To do anything, a computer needs to do calculations. Different types of calculations are done by different logic gates, so a computer needs different kinds of logic gates. A quantum gate, however, serves the purpose of all logic gates at once. So basically one quantum gate does all sorts of calculations.

Chess can already be run phenomenally by a normal computer considering that the possibilities on average are 10^120 and all combinations can happen on a board with 64 squares. Quantum computers can probably calculate over a million 4 player chess boards and pick the strongest move instantly without having to think.

Even though I studied Quantum physic and also IT as a major, during my last years at university, this one is the hardest episode of all for me. And I cannot even have help from my parents, who are IT teachers.

An iPhone XS or later has a transistor size of 7 nm, which was pretty revolutionary since it was one of the only devices to be mass-produced with such an architecture. In the past year, however, 7 nm transistors are becoming more prevalent in PCs. In 2019, 5 nm technology has become commercialized, though not on a massive scale. Even now, Samsung has announced they plan to commercialize 3 nm technology.
The important thing to note here is that we design these transistors often decades before they become commercial. For example, 10 nm technology was first designed in the 1980s before being created in 2002 and commercialized in 2016. Currently, the smallest transistor created is at 2.3 nm, which may signal that we are at an end for transistors, considering how the disparity between the size of created transistors and the size of commercialized transistors has diminished greatly.
Currently, some major nanotech research firms have considered 14-angstrom transistors (14Å, one angstrom is 10^-10 meters, 1 ten-billionth), which is about half the width of a DNA helix, by around 2025. However, whether or not we will be able to actually realize this is up for debate for the reasons mentioned in this video.

Heres the run through:
Current technology compute with using +/- charge. (With electron or without) 0 or 1. When it comes to logic gates = guard, door, hall monitor, etc. (whether or not it has 0 or 1), its too small to the point an electron can pass through making the transistor (the reader, identifier, etc) think it has a + or - when its the opposite.
Quantum tech uses positioning on top of that. Positions are constantly changing and isnt affected by change that much (only when observed)
Think of you jumping up and down and a dark room. No one can tell if you are on the floor or not until they snap a picture. Snapping a picture will reveal your current state at the time of observation. But since you are continuously jumping up and down, your state could be different when observed.
Entanglement is basically if theres another one jumping with you. You are off the floor when they have just touched and landed on the floor.
Snapping a picture of any of you will tell the observer the current state of the other as it is the opposite state.
So quantum tech can calculate a lot.
So one is going on a charge based (0 or 1, +/- charge) only 2 while the other have different states such as horizontal or vertical with entanglement tells loads of details.
Is it left, right, up, or down? Compared to only positive or negative?
2nd, they can have pairs so theres even more data.
So we can have the same exact storage, but the processing power is far more.
Current processing: 1 atom = 2 states (+/-).
Think of morse code (dots and dashes). Think about how long youd have to spell a simple letter let alone a word (this is how the computers read = binary)
Quantum processing: 1 atom = 4 positioning + entanglement (4 ways and predictive info on another atom = less time deciphering)
So basically this is like typing with a keyboard (not even T9 keyboard with multiple presses to get the correct letter)

Current tech calculates with 2 things, positive and negative. Otherwise known as binary
While quantum calculates using superpositioning which has 4 combination states (16 in total) couple that with charge and entanglement, you can have more possible data compared to only having 0 or 1.
As for the whole schrodinger's cat, the problem with checking superpositioning is it is influenced by checking.
To put simply, in order to look at something, you apply light to it, typically. But doing so will DIRECTLY affect the particles causing it to get charged or change its direction/position.
Our eyes perceive protons. If you think of them as basketballs, you would have the balls be passed to you and the other person. If the ball doesnt come in contact with anything during the pass and goes directly from your hands to the other guy, there is nothing. Its a complete vacuum, you cant see. But if the ball touches something, that will change BOTH the direction, speed, and energy of BOTH the ball and the thing it hits.
Then we know that there is something there but the fact that we had to interact with it to know that there is something there, we completely change its natural state.
What if the thing that we hit was first suspended and now its moving about? What if it was spinning counterclockwise but now weve hit it, its spinning clockwise? What if it is only moving up and down and now weve interacted with it, it is now moving left to right too? We would conclude that these are their REAL states which they arent.
That is why the video talks about superpositioning as this unknown variable. Why it is changing from red to blue and the spins are also different. Because we cant ever know because even observing it is like interacting with it.
The reason being is that we are working in such small scale that protons are big enough to affect them. Instead of being hit with a small pebble or even the size of a and grain, you are using a basketball.
If it goes through, there is only space, if it bounces back, there is something there. If its sand against paper, it would not move the paper if sand is thrown at it. But the things we are dealing with in quantum dimensions are so minuscule that protons are waaaay bigger and that you are basically throwing a basketball up against that suspended paper. That basketball may even phase through that paper giving the illusion that there was nothing there at all (dark matter) but the paper is now shredded, flown elsewhere and dragged by the basketball and falling along the way. Yet, the ball has experienced no significant change.
To the guy on the otherside (the recipient of the ball), he might not even have to shift to try and catch the ball which results to having the perception that there was nothing in between him/her and you.
Sorry if i used space and dark matter to explain the scales and why we cant figure out quantum nature.
This video talked about how we have reached the limit in which compures can process information as we can only process 2 bits of info per data (0 or 1).
The dimensions are too small now that even electrons are phasing through the molecules and giving a false read.
So we use smaller placeholders instead of electrons, nuetrons and protons. But due to their small scales and our instruments to register them are big, we are influencing how these new placeholders are behaving.
But theres an advantage for that since they can hold more information than just the 2 bits. Our observations can directly manipulate them with not much effort too. Its just predicting them is the hardest part.
Right now we currently are in the stage of late 19th early 20th century computers.
Their transistors, breakers, resistors, levers and switches and much much more(these are all i recognise in electronic components) are so gigantic that they cant have more than 1kilobyte/megabyte of data storage.
Until we adapt our tech to no longer use atomic dimensions but quantum, we will still be throwing baskeballs against a thin sheet of paper instead of grains of sands.

Not exactly, the most difficult part of quantum computing is actually operating them. They can successfully create multi qbit processors and supercool them to run effectively but they are having trouble with the programming.
Right now they have to be programmed using complex algorithms just to actually get usable information out of them, and each different problem being computed must be individually programmed.
Right now lockheed martin is using a 512qbit D-wave 2 and google is using an experimental 1024(i think)qbit D-wave 2. At this point they have not been able to compute anything complex, accurately or on a repeatable basis so it's still very early days.
But I honestly think this is next stage in human advancement without a doubt.

I got pretty deep into this one myself. Really enjoyed it. Took a break at around chapter sixteen or seventeen. Once he establishes basic logic gates, the complexity picks up pretty quickly.
Important note: This book covers computers as we know them today (when the book was written actually). I don't believe it covers the quantim bits. Even still, just understanding bits first can help shed some light on what they're discussing in the video here.

Well maybe. The main problem with that is that plastics are so useful to use BECAUSE they're hard to break down. One of the biggest uses of plastic is in food packaging, where its most useful property is the ability to resist biodegredation. Any plastic that is discovered that CAN be easily broken down by bacteria will fail to do its job properly, or at least could not be used for food storage.
It would suffice to store foods for a limited period of time, which should be everyone's goal anyways.

Honest truth I didn't understand anything from this video.
S4BER Superposition- allows you to hold all possible combinations of bits in a single combination. That basically allows you to hold more data without taking too much space. It's also good for quickly extracting something.
Entanglement- you don't need to check each and every bit to know the full combination. For example, in the binary number 1011, a normal computer will have to check each digit one by one to confirm that the number is 1011. But a quantum computer just needs to check the first digit (i.e. 1) and it will instantly know the full number.
Qubit manipulation- To do anything, a computer needs to do calculations. Different types of calculations are done by different logic gates, so a computer needs different kinds of logic gates. A quantum gate, however, serves the purpose of all logic gates at once. So basically one quantum gate does all sorts of calculations.

Chess can already be run phenomenally by a normal computer considering that the possibilities on average are 10^120 and all combinations can happen on a board with 64 squares. Quantum computers can probably calculate over a million 4 player chess boards and pick the strongest move instantly without having to think.
