- This song from Smith's new album, Warries, describes events leading up to the death of Lance Corporal Jared 'Crash' MacKinney at the Battle of Derapet (24 August 2010), as seen by one of his mates. In this performance, Fred Smith is backed by Liz Frencham, Carl Pannuzzo and Fiete Geier. The video was edited by Megan Watson. many service members play this weekly, he will always be remembered.
I was the man that died inside next to him. It was my 58 my bullet, I shall be forever shameful and thankful
4 days before I cam home from Helmand myself...
Im an british vet served in afghan 2008 and this song is so powerful and it makes me cry every time i hear it.. rip Crash
Really a shame that a song like this, a story about something real and meaningful, only has about 100k views 7 years after it was uploaded here. This kind of song writing and storytelling not only deserves but NEEDS to be heard. There's obviously a lot of influence from Redgum's song about Vietnam. But Afghanistan is our Vietnam. Thank you for sharing your story, Fred Smith. -Afghanistan Vet US Army
I am an ex British Army Commando Sapper who served in Sangin back in 2008. This song has nothing to do with my tour, yet is everything about my tour.
Nice one Fred
Brilliant song Fred. RIP Crash. MTF1 6RAR Battlegroup. Duty First.
As another vet from TK 2005-2006. Thanks.
“Derapet” is the modern “I was only 19”
Yup
Yes it is
We need to learn about these events in school, most kids wouldn’t even know about the war in Afghanistan, lest we forget

@@paulplummer777 DUTY FIRST BROTHER
This is undoubtedly one of Australia's greatest tributes to one of our own ❤️👍👌
I firmly believe the fair dinkum heroes are the one's that never made it home. The rest of us are simply survivors left to tell their story, and we are compelled to do so. I knew Bewes from D Coy, and although he's been gone for 10 yrs now, his smile, and his vigor for life, will never be forgotten.
RIP Crash, Duty First
Rio Crash. 6 RAR
So relevant to those who have served makes it possibly the greatest ever song of what it is to be an Australian soldier! Respect
Wow....beautiful song...RIP Crash, it certainly brings a reality of what all the vets have to endure when in these wars zones....too many lives lost. ❤️❤️🙏🏻
Such a beautiful tribute to Crash... well done mate. I still remember the day when I was sitting in barracks (Australia) hearing the news..
Ah the Diggers, Loyalest of friends , fiercest of enemies, RiP L/Cpl MacKinney, and everyone ISAF has left behind
Rest in Paradise Crash and to all that didn't return, you paid the ultimate sacrifice, we Will Remember You. xoxo
To those that returned home but lost their battle with the demons that returned with them, you will never be forgotten. xoxo
To those that returned and still fight their demons, Stand Strong, your Brothers have got you and your families love you xoxo
RIP to all the men, all doing their job for our freedom.... Fred, had tears in my eyes listening to their story, sung by you xx
I'm a fan and having met Fred a umber of times interviewed and had a beer, very fond of this compassionate and talented person.
My friends cousin is crash apparently but I would also to pay my tribute not only to your amazing song an dont only to poor crash but to every soldier that has and may someday sacrifice their lives for our country.
12 years ago today.
Powerful song.Thank you Fred
Got to say, you Aussies, have a great history of putting your wars to songs..
Been doing it for a couple of hundred years now.

This song was my introduction to the genius of Fred Smith. I'm a massive fan & the only one I'm aware of, who has a tattoo which includes a quote from one of his songs. #commitment
Which quote?
I know a few lads that got "You give it your all, Knowing if you should fall, That all good things must die".

The honour, courage and sacrifice of our Great Grand Fathers, Grand Fathers, Fathers, Brothers, Sisters and sadly now our children have been pissed against the wall by the parasite classes who spray our land with toxins and make sure your beloved 2 year old receives a gene therapy therapeutic(weapon) dose which will cease all joys and pleasures for an independent and free soul. YOUR silence is acquiescence which these parasites prey on. For the love of your children, Stand Now, or roll in your grave for evermore.
Well said my friend. So much i could add but youv said it. (RIP Dad Scots Guards 1943-1947) 💔💔💔
