This video is nicely done, however it does not address the issue of having high total chlorine, and very low/no free chlorine. This is what the chlorine lock reference is about, or at least when I have heard it used. The video ambiguously refers to 'chlorine levels' throughout, and does not differentiate btwn the two (really there are three chlorine levels if you throw is combined).
You are 100% correct. In that instance, use a non-chlorinated shock to reduce the Total Chlorine level. Once Free Chlorine exceeds Combined Chlorine, the chlorine will “unlock” and your pool will start to sanitize. Keeping Total Chlorine levels as low as possible is the key to optimizing your Free Chlorine levels (and a balanced PH level too). It’s unfortunate most pool owners don’t understand this and waste $$$ chasing a misdirected fix.
Wow. What an amazing video. I am a new pool owner. I understand the science behind pool chemicals. This is the most comprehensive video and makes complete sense to what I am experiencing with my own pool! Best video!! Hands down!!
As Mike L said, this is happening to me right now and this video couldn’t come at a better time, thank you so much. The pool is getting a shocking tonight lol 😂
oh man thank you so much for this video and it couldn't have come at a better time...i'm having this EXACT issue right now and its getting frustrating. It all adds up though all of the reasons you said. Really appreciate you sir keep up the good work very glad I subscribed to your email list.
I had this last year. Nightmare. I had three companies all tell me different things. I researched TH-cam. My ONLY fix was to balance my ALK and PH to perfection, then BINGO, it unlocked. Very weird and frustrating
Will try this tonight... All my levels are in range except the chlorine level, it stays at .5 or less and I added about 3/4ths of a gallon of liqud chlorine and still low reading.. I'll super shock tonight and hopefully this works!
Opening a late covered pool & pool was still cloudy after 2 weeks. Pool store told me I have chlorine lock. Test kit was bright yellow. They sold me non-chlorine shock, & it finally started to clear up. 3rd week in opening a late covered pool. Who knows?? But I’m finally seeing the light(bottom)
We where adding tons of chlorine. Not until we tested and found high phosphate levels (we live near a bunch of farms) and took care of that issues no amount of shocking and additional chlorine could get our chlorine level to increase.
Been watching you a while but lost me on this one. Had a green water outbreak a few weeks ago. Shocked the pool at a 11ppm. It did nothing for two days. Check my cyanuric levels and they were through the roof. Did 50% water change(10000 gal pool) and dosed the chlorine back up to 11ppm and it cleared that day. If it wasn’t my acid levels locking out the chlorine, what was is?
Glad you could clear things up! If your CYA levels are way too high, diluting your water is the only way to lower them. Your free chlorine and CYA ratios are always relevant and chlorine lock is just an overly simplistic and incorrect term of this combination of high CYA and free chlorine. Bringing this ratio into range again by increasing your free chlorine level usually works. But as you said, your CYA was "through the roof" and very high CYA can be hard when shocking a pool with algae since you're trying to bring your free chlorine up to a range of about 40% of your CYA levels.
@@SwimUniversity In your video you make cyanuric acid levels sound less important than they are. As a pool pro I try to keep free chlorine at 7.5% of the cya level at all times. When shocking I triple or quadruple that. I simply cannot afford to shock a pool weekly just cause, I need a valid reason. Usually when pools "need shock weekly" there is an underlying issue. High bather load, water imbalance, phosphates, high pool temp, old/poor plaster, etc.
You’re right and he is kinda slanting the conversation. Also keep your ph dialed while you have chlorine going. Almost all of chlorine’s effectiveness happens in the mid 7’s if you’re in the 8’s it’s not working to it’s potential at 8.5 you have like 9 percent. No one talks about ph’s relationship to sanitation and it’s the single most important part followed by conditioner levels. Tablets were invented for vacationing they were never intended to be how they are used modern day and continued use has led to cya levels that are though the roof that DOES make sanitizer in-effective. Thus why you have algae and cloudiness etc. it’s a simple formula, clean filter, good run time, balanced chemicals including free chlorine, 7.2-7.4 ph and “low” conditioner levels
Awesome video! Came at the perfect time for me! You rock. Quick question though. My look was Chrystal clear despite not being able get get chlorine up. PH and Alk were good. Triple shocked last night and now my pool is super cloudy right before the weekend! Help!!

I put 2lba of shock . Let it sit over night. And it's all clear but cloudy. I put some ph in it. And a bottle of I bought XtraBlue Algaecide 40 oz. Algae Prevention and Algaecide and Xtra shock. I put it in the morning and I let it sit for 2 hours and then the ph

Sounds like you don’t really have a problem at all if water is clear and chemistry balanced. It would be wise to get phosphates below 500ppb to decrease chance of a future algae bloom in the event your water later falls out of line. Adding PhosFree just one ounce every 2-3 weeks will get it down to zero and keep it there. A 3 liter bottle costs around $33 and will last two years. It’s much harder for algae to grow once you take away its fertilizer (phosphate)

Great videos. However, I have a situation. I have a salt water pool. My cell is clean and not worn. My chlorine readings are all 0. my CYA level averages 50-60ppm (30,000 gal pool). I have triple shocked a few times in the last week. The morning after shocking, my chlorine levels are good, but a day later, they go back to 0. All other levels are within proper range. That is a fact. Tri-chlor tablets carry stabilizer in them. To maintain the effects of chlorine you have to have a decent cya. It acts as sunscreen for the pool. Too high, 90 to 100+ your chlorine is eaten up. Not to mention TDS. Just drain and clean. Lol but for real, cya is hell if above 100.

1) Clean Filter 2) Balance your PH 3) use non-chlorinated shock to lower your Total Chlorine level 4) Use traditional liquid chlorine to raise your Free Chlorine levels 5) tell your boyfriend/husband he is getting replaced if he doesn’t learn how to maintain your pool 😎
Chlorine lock... 2300 gallon small 8x12 pool. Total chlorine is 9.58, but free chlorine is only 0.75 which on a pool test strip registers 0. Phosphates are 226, stabilizer is 37. Pool store recommended 2 bags of oxidizing non chlorinating shock, which did nothing. Water is perfectly clear. How do I fix this. Alkalinity and ph are good
Your combined chlorine is off the charts. Probably need additional shocking to bring it down. "If you want to shock the pool successfully, you should aim to raise the free chlorine level to about ten times higher than the number of chloramines." I'd try repeating the shock and checking total/free chlorine again. You might just not have broken through your build up yet.
I have had this issue in the past, and am actually dealing with it now. You are going to need MUCH more O2 shock than 2lbs. I have added 15lbs.. TWICE! And I am still locked up.
This is not totally accurate info. Chlorine lock is not the same thing as chlorine demand. You absolutely can have too much CYA in your pool and render your chlorine ineffective.
You literally just gave me the answer to all problems I’ve been running into! Thank you!!!

Also- water is cloudy looking?
Thats a new twist so no what do I do. Hmmm.
This is not totally accurate info. Chlorine lock is not the same thing as chlorine demand. You absolutely can have too much CYA in your pool and render your chlorine ineffective.
Or you added so much chlorine that your test kit can read and shows that there is no chlorine because it’s off the chart
