Standard 18 i thought sounded the best... I actually just bought a standard D-18 33' Ambertone finish and WOW!! I'm telling you right now that the standard D-18s are some of the best guitars being built right now period! Monsters!!
The modern deluxe surprisingly had the best tone for me, the standard was a close second. ‘37 for fingerpicking and ‘39 for strumming out of the authentics.
I tried them all Hugh, and I ended up buying the 1937 authentic, aged, in sunburst. It seems that it is the way they are played that cannot help differentiate their uniqueness. I am not sure the video is the best thing to rely on when making a choice. The 37 is impressive. I like it even better than my D-42 Adirondack/Guatemalan back, and this is quite a good guitar.
I like the d28 modern deluxe, the tone , the Addy bracing, titanium truss rod, liquid bridge pins, abalone Martin insignia on the top, flamed maple binding, sandwiched carbon bridgeplate, herringbone, gold frets and open geared tuners❤❤❤, I only wish the pickguard was a thin slice of rosewood.
Hiya Maury: Modern Deluxe sounded very balanced; all the notes were very clear. D-18 Authentic 1937 was amazing, but a bit more of the high end stood out. The D-18 Authentic Aged was very nice: the most mature. D-18 Standard is exactly what you say: “don’t sleep on it.” It is the STANDARD, and sounds fantastic. If I were singing: the MD; just playing and had the money: the Authentic. I love the neck.
Fantastic video! Does the 37' have an adi top? Please try a drop tuning like a DDD. I would love the full rack of four guitars. Push come to shove the 39" for its tone, with the standard #2. I have an 83' Vintage Series D-18 that has a wonderful v-shaped neck that feels really good. The guitar slays me every time I play it. So, lucky me.
I liked the standard the most. It might be that it was the only one that didn't have an echo in the mix. With the others, I could hear and echo on your voice, when introducing the guitars and also applied to the instruments.
I am sorry I missed this live. I do love the mahogany but I have rosewood too and enjoy. The first run through I thought each was better than the other. On strumming all were pretty equal. Flat picked I thought the '39 was very close to my 20 year old D-18GE (which is better all the time) and the MD was beautiful. Have a fantastic weekend and make money, make music and make mama proud! As always.
Sorry I forgot to finish my thought. I liked the MD for flatpicking. Fingerstyle was a toss up. Moderate strumming I’d probably choose MD. Heavy strumming either the 37 or 39 but those necks don’t like me.
Thanks for the very well done comparison. The Authentic's for me were clear winners, the 1939 if you need more note definition and the 1937 for a little rounder warmer sound and strumming. The Modern Deluxe to me is a complete turd. There is something in the tone of that guitar that is very very off putting, and I listened with good studio monitors and headphones and had the same impression. It just sounds wrong......I really hope I can find some way to fund the purchase of a D-18n Authentic this year.
@@MaurysMusic now that I have both an OM-28v (like yours) and a 00-18v (like Rohit’s), I can officially say that Hog rules (in my not so humble opinion:) … However I tried Martin silk and steel on the OM-28v and was shocked… It was really addictive (I learned on a Spanish style guitar) I have put back Martin PB round core since… The OM-28v with silk and steel would have overtaken the 00-18v with PBS… But I don’t need two quiet guitars. With round core PB the OM28V is a whole different animal than the 00-18V and that is exactly my aim.
Definitely the D18 ‘37 … with a manly neck.. I have a GE D18 and a ‘37 D18 and a ‘72 D28 that I bought stripped of finish.. It’s been modified braces slightly trimmed refretted with Dunlop 6105 and refinish with a vintage toned lacquer..( in ‘99 ) My D18 GE is a 2010..D18 37 is a 2013. my D28 is due for a neck reset.. at the moment my fav is the GE..
In my humble opinion, why spend the extra bucks.. None of the others sound better than the Standard D-18. I mean the Standard is close to $3K now. It is all anyone would ever need for a lifetime of pleasure and service if a professional player.
That's nonsense. The authentics cleary sound better. Standard is great but they're different. Authentic 18s are rosewood lovers mahoganys. How can you say they don't sound different lol. Everything about them is different, they literally have to sound different
There's no way anyone can say with a strait face that the standard beat the authentic. What did surprise me is I liked the 39 with rear bracing more than the 37. And how it somehow sounded warmer. Crazy I know for a fact everyone in here saying the standard wins, personally owns a standard lol The delux sounded terrible. Something is off with that guitar. The standard did blow that away. And the 18 is an amazing guitar. I just wish it had a beefier neck. I think it would also improve the tone
@@MaurysMusicAnd like I said, that 39 is dam impressive. But depends on what sound you're looking for. Funny thing it sounds most standard like. Just more dry, and fuller, and punchier. I just realized why I like it. I'm starting to get away from the lighter snappier sound of the 37 trebles. Even if it's more open sounding.
Which one is your favorite??

Every time I pick up a D-18 it brings joy to my spirit and a smile to my face. I think everyone should have one in their collection?
Good advice 👍😎

I like the standard for overall sound across the board.

It’s like a game show where any answer would be acceptable to the judges.
Haha!
The 37 sounded magical!!

I would be perfectly happy with the D-18 Standard!
Right!? It's still the benchmark.

Yes the D-18A 1937 has an Adi top. Thanks for the kind words.
Standard sounds the best out of all of them IMO
Thanks, Gino!

The standard is setting the standard. That says it all. But The post 2012 D18's are hard to beat

Thanks for the thoughtful reply, Jonothan. I feel very differently about the MDs but that’s what’s great - we have choices.
Agreed. Something is off with the MD. At least in this video. Maybe in person its different.

Hi. Good morning from Malaysia
Hi Paul!
Standard d18 is the best for me
Thanks, Andrea
Maury which one is best for Rock Songs?
Entirely personal preference.
of the 2 Auth? = 39' if you like the neck/specs, With the Std & MD? = Std for the sound and price + neck. Overall? = Std. D18 for me.😎
Thank you RC!
Neil Young another wonderful tune ! The guitar sounds great !
Thank you!
D18 standard for me
Nice!
The standard is nicely ballanced with a true sweet Martin tone
I agree
I own a d18 standard …… but put a Yamaha fg 830 in that mix or on stage and no one tells the difference ……especially with the added reverb in mix
Thanks for your input, Robert!
Whole story but we're not buying them for people in the crowd to need necessarily notice the difference in a band with Reverb
