"Blue Moon" was written by Rodgers and Hart in 1934 as a ballad. Having said that, I do love the Marcels' version. Also, you really need to check out the 1961 Tokens' "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." You will love it!

      Tokens
      Winner!
First time I heard it was in the gym/lunchroom with my nose under a table looking at all the chewing gum. If you got in trouble Coach made you put your nose in a circle under the table. Can't remember what I did to get in trouble. You can bet I never did it again. 4th or 5th grade.
See, there was music in the gym. We always had music.

When I was 15 (I am 63) my parents bought a second hand piano and piano stool. The seat of the stool could be opened and inside we found a stash of sheet music from the 1920s and 1930s. Many of them had beautiful monochrome Art Deco designs on their front covers, including the original publication of Blue Moon. (It was in blue ink with a stylized face in profile surrounded by bands of increasingly deep blue)

Doo-wap music is a true art. I was born in 65, but my parents raised me up listening to Doo-wap, blues, rockabilly, bluegrass, and country. So I had a pretty wide scope, and it only expanded from there.

You have heard this song before and you don't even realize it at all. You guys watched the movie "Grease". This song was sung by Sha Na Na at the school dance. It was during the part where 3 of the T-Birds pulled their pants down and mooned the camera 😂
Also, that isn't called scatting. It is called Doo Wop. Scatting is a style used in vocal jazz.
    Nice reaction youguys! ✌🏼❣️

In Grease, Sha Na Na does it in the more traditional balled style and you don't hear very much of it. So, it's not surprising if they didn't recognize it. I think the Marcel's are the only ones I've heard do "Blue Moon" in the upbeat style.

Nice!! This was one of my Dad's favorite songs - he sang it all the time! Here's my list of suggestions for doo-wop songs from the 50's & early 60's: "Why Do Fools Fall in Love?" by Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers, "Speedoo" by The Cadillacs, "Come Go with Me" & "Cool Shake" by The Del-Vikings, "Charlie Brown" & "Poison Ivy" by The Coasters, "Up on the Roof" by The Drifters, "Book of Love" by The Monotones, "Sh-boom" by The Chords, "Remember Then" by The Earls, "Shimmy Shimmy Ko Ko Bop" by Little Anthony & The Imperials, and "Lion Sleeps Tonight" by the Tokens.

You'll get round to the UK Doo-Wop masters, The Darts, one day!
They're from the south of England, and were pretty popular around the late 70's-early 80's, and performed some great old covers as well as some fantastic original songs, written by various band members.
I think their USP was the fact that all four singers sang lead vocals, depending on the song!!
Bob Fish (RIP) had a fabulous falsetto
Griff Fender was the 'rocker', on faster tempo songs
Rita Ray (the only girl in the 9 piece band!) sang the 'he done me wrong' songs, & was the pin-up girl for all the guy fans!! 😍
Last, but not least, Den Hegarty was the ultimate the bass-man!
Mad as a box of frogs, but with a sublime bass vocal, that really drove the songs along!!
Play literally ANYTHING by The Darts, & marvel at the most rocking-est band the UK had to offer!! 😃😃😃

Yes, take me back, way back to the music i remember falling in love with when i came to the US at 8 years of age. The neighborhood teens singing DooWop late at night in the darkened schoolyard across the street, they sounded so cool. Been in love with DooWop ever since. I only wish you had the studio version that the radio stations played. Want some classic DooWop gems?, give a listen to " One Summer Night " by The Danleers, " Sixteen Candles " by The Crests, " Remember Then " by The Earls, and "So Fine " by The Fiestas. I have a ton more, but i won't clog up the system. Keep them coming guys, like your breakdown in your reactions.

The Marcels were a doowop quintet from Pittsburgh named after a popular hairstyle of the time. A staff producer at Colpix Records, Stu Phillips, believed in them when no one else at the company did, and snuck them into the studio at 8pm for a clandestine four-song session. Unfortunately, the group only had three songs. Phillips asked 'em what else they sang. They offered this number and that number, and he didn't care for any of 'em, except for one little itty-bit in the middle of one tune. It had the same chord progressions as "Heart And Soul" and "Blue Moon" and so he asked the Marcels if they knew either of those numbers. "Heart And Soul"? Nah, they didn't know it. But one of the Marcels was familiar with "Blue Moon". "So I gave him an hour to teach it to the others," said Phillips.
When he returned, they had just eight minutes of studio time left on the clock. The Marcels did two full takes, and nailed it in the second. At any rate, two takes, a bomp-ba-ba-bomp and a reworked release, and the Marcels were out of there. Oh, and that little itty-bit from one of the rejected songs? Phillips figured that would make a great intro for the record. So they stuck it on the front of "Blue Moon".
A Colpix promotions man chanced to hear the song, asked Stu Phillips for a tape, and passed it on to Murray the K at WINS New York. On his next show, Murray the K played "Blue Moon" 26 times. It knocked Elvis off the Number One spot on the Billboard Hot One Hundred in April 1961, and went to Number One in Britain a few weeks later. -- Mark Steyn (Blue Moon - Steyn's Song of the Week)

I love it!!! Still can sing the right amount of bomp a bomp bomps, dag a dag dags, and dig a dong dings, after all these years. 😄. Doo Wop for sure.
Here's a good fun one for you.
The Tokens: "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" (video when they're young or old, both are great!)
And here's a wonderful ballad love song.... "You Belong To Me" by The Duprees. (It's a cover of a Jo Stafford ballad )
Both of these songs were on diner juke boxes for decades. ( every booth seat in a diner and on the counters were small nuke boxes. 25¢ bought you 3 songs.) Bobby Darin's "Mack The Knife" and The Drifter's "Under The Boardwalk" were other standards that were on for decades too.). I miss those juke boxes.
    May I also suggest these:
*The Rays: "2 Silhouettes on the Shade"
*The Drifters: "Up on the Roof"
    *Ben E. King:: "Spanish Harlem"
These were all big hits too from the 50's to early 60's. I used to listen to all of these at night on my radio when I went to bed.
As a see note, back then radios where really big and tv screens really small and both had glass tubes ( like cylindrical light bulbs) inside them to conduct the electricity and sound.

An interesting tidbit of information. "Blue Moon" was written in 1934 and was recorded many times by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Dean Martin and even Bob Dylan, to name a few. But this song, recorded by The Marcels was the only one to make it to the top and become unforgettable. It is such a great Doo-Wop number.
BTW, the Blue Moon is the 2nd Full Moon in a month.
