@@balcersaurus So is Farming but......here we are. There are a couple skills that could be removed from the game and the game would lose little as a result (looking at you firemaking/farming/slayer).
Sailing as a Multi skill activity could be much better than as a new skill of its own. The activity could provide a combination of agility strength and construction xp or something. Making it an agility training method that doesn't suck would be sweet
In RS3 "sailing" was a minigame kinda basically it was just Managing Miscellania with a twist. Instead of actually doing sht you just set up your boats/crews and sent them away on missions over and over with no active part. Imo it was hot garbage but it had some mandatory/strong upgrades/items from it and a ton of lore stuff as well as a solid quest line tied to it. Imo sailing should be a travel focused skill and built around that. Like make it so that high sailing level lets you access actually useful new areas for other skills and new bosses would be ideal imo
That's exactly what they are doing if you've watched the streams and read the blogs. Higher sailing levels will unlock more dangerous regions of water with better rewards and more cross-skill activities. You gain experience with travel along with other methods of training that are of differing intensity levels. And that's all just what's in the current pre-alpha. Not to mention the skill, once development is done, must still pass a final poll to be added to the game. If it's truly terrible and the majority no longer want it, the votes will bear that out. But be wary of echo chambers and vocal minorities when it comes to things like this, and get your information from the direct source as often as possible. Even in Behe's video he gets it wrong by saying, "sailing is coming soon." The lead devs working on it said they think the earliest they could have it ready for a final poll would be in 2026, more than a full year away. It's nowhere close to being a done deal, and the stuff we see now is akin to proof of concept tech demos and transparent request for earnest feedback. Provide it. Tell them what changes would make it better/more tolerable if it passes, then vote no on the final poll if you're not satisfied. Engage with trying to make it better and you might just make it so. The people who are endlessly bleating to get rid of it are hinging all of their chance at influence on the final poll instead of trying to improve what might be passed even against their no vote if the majority want it.
Last year Jagex demonstrated they were mature enough to scrap what would have been a terrible update despite considerable development having gone into it, when they scrapped the new pray book. I still hope they'll wake up and do the same to Sailing.

Some ideas for sailing: • Agility, combat from the side of the boat, or even fishing (therefore, Combat and Fishing too) • Expanding the wilderness. Launching iron bar canoes into the lava maze for a fateful 2 minutes. Give those iron bars some love. There's only a quadrillion of them in the GE. (Edit: also, of course, Ocean of Peace or whatever it's called can be a hub. Heck, may give Jagex the ability to start pushing North in their map, and adding islands, or straight up archipelagos like the Phillippines or Indonesia). Extreme ideas, but if sailing is a thing, hey why not go ham in a fantasy game that has gnome food and seaweed burgers
You don't understand that 'haters are the loudest' People. In general are like: 'I agree with this and I have a heavy urge to share my feelings!' That only happens when people disagree. Also, you can find the 70% that supported this in the poll results.
Players voted for sailing, players don’t like how sailing is constructed to level up and try. Why did you vote yes to it if you’re not going to like it?
Such a low IQ take, they don’t like the implementation. They like the concept. You can like the concept, but not how it’s being built. Jagex didn’t do a fully developed showcase pre-voting, how are players suppose to know how they were going to implement it. This is like you saying why did you pay to see a movie you didn’t like. You don’t know whether or not you’ll like the movie until you see it.
I think sailing could be very convenient if you could sail up to any part of a beach on any island, say you want to go to northeast wildy at a certain spot, you could sail up there or if you wanted to go to the north east side of Karamja, you could sail directly where you want to on the map Edit: could also instant sail there after sailing there for the first time manually
There are 1 million pros to Sailing. It's gonna be a great skill that will become one of the most popular. 70% wants it in the game, you're in the 30% that's fine ofc. Quit when you want.

@@Snufolupogus The thing is, we’re currently in a “yes vote” era where people just vote yes on everything without considering the long-term consequences new content might bring. I could say a lot more on this, but it’s too much for a random comment. At the end of the day, if it turns out to be bad, all we can do is vote no and hope for the best. Honestly, I’ll probably retire after maxing the original skills anyway. If kids these days want content bloat and frustrating PvM that demands sweaty gameplay, they can have it. I’m not a streamer; I prefer the original click-and-wait, chill gameplay. I get why streamers want sweaty gameplay. The harder the content, the more impressive it is to clear, and that kind of spectacle grabs attention and brings in more viewers. Not many streamers are sitting there streaming themselves chopping trees or fishing-they’re always focused on doing raids and high-level content. I’ve done some of the harder stuff-like grinding Corrupted Gauntlet-and it wasn’t fun. Even after completing it, I can’t say I’m happy about it. Sure, getting Bowfa and crystal armour improved GWD methods, but looking back, CG was miserable, and I regret wasting my time on something that only made me angry. Live and learn, I guess. The game has changed so much that I’m starting to feel nostalgic for a vanilla Old School RuneScape version. 💀
I think it’s gonna be great. It’s one of the only things the game does for you. I think it would be dope instead of clicking on a captain you would do the sailing yourself. Then to make it worth leveling have it be like you need a certain skill to dock it at certain places. Agility makes running your travel. Magic levels bring travel. But to traverse the sea you just talk to someone. I’m excited and I think it’s a dope new addition
The anti-sailing echo chamber is giving me second hand embarrassment right now, especially because there's so many people commenting on reddit (or youtube, go figure) that have clearly never actually read the blog posts or seen the team talk about it.
Worst is the "muh dailyscape" crowd who don't understand what they're talking about, did not read the full blogpost, and did not tune in to the stream where they explained much of the "criticism" is people fundamentally misunderstanding the mechanics they explained.
They act like it's EOC and it's clearly not. No constructive criticism very few criticisms are valid, just salt flung around because they lost the poll. Maybe they should win next time. I will sail in their tears
I think sailing is fine. But, I think it has no reason to be a skill. There is nothing old-school about it. I love the new content. Yes, please. But don't go changing the game again, like EOC.
I'm keen for Sailing! From the limited info we have it looks pretty good, shows cool training diversity and a reason to exist. I think a lot of the fear of sailing is mostly unfounded on comparisons to EOC, where Jagex was substituting content this is a pure addition. There’s so much opportunity to extend what already exists in the game with the use of the water portion of the map.
Classic Jagex ignoring the community and doing whatever they want. Yall give them way too much benefits of the doubt when they shoot themselves in the foot time and time again by their own decision making. Blindly shitting on them in valid when this is another example of when being levelheaded and giving them constructive criticism they will blindly ignore that and do whatever they want in the most embarrassing fashion.
This was very contructive. I can't see why they keep lumping you in with all the other doomsayers. Have you tried insulting them? That would really make you stand out from the crowd.
Except that's the polar opposite of what they've been doing if you've been paying a single iota of meaningful attention to the process. The mechanics and designs have already changed muktiple times based on testing feedback. The skill was passed by a vote of the players. Yes, it should have gone to a runoff vote between shamanism and sailing, and that's the biggest misstep of the process. But what they've done since has been transparent and responsive, and they're taking this extremely slowly. This is the opposite of them "doing whatever they want". The only people saying that are those that are living in a vocal minority echo chamber and not engaging with the process.
@rachaelscofield8082 There's another facet to this I didn't include that's important: sailing hasn't actually passed a poll to be included in the game yet. It still has to be voted on after development is done. The first poll was to determine where development resources would be allocated to, be it a new skill or to no skill at all.
Just what you said on sailing and comparing barracuda trails or whatever they're called like sepulca and it being a mini game, my tought process is yeah it might be but in the case of we are looking at ways to train a new skill and just like sepulca is a mini game that rewards agility rewards and good xp barracuda trails also do and theyre showing us all the ways to train it so just like other skills have a mini game varient to train the skill sometimes faster even (gotr for runecrafting, giants foundry for smithing ect) its probs just showing us theres an intense mini game to train the skill like agility has sepulca and stuff
I agree with most of tasty's points. Sailing could be great and a lot is gonna be dependant on how it FEELS to sail. Currently it looks like there will be a lot of interesting bits around the world to interact with while sailing for the first time, but will doing repeated port tasks be fun? Interesting? Or is everyone just gonna afk the shipwrecks? I'm still cautiausly optimistic and cant wait to try it out myself and give feedback
Not just a beta. They're doing a pubkic alpha on this before a beta. They're taking this slowly and with the consideration and care it deserves while being transparent with the community. That puts this miles ahead of blunders like EoC that were developed without community involvement.
I feel the same about sailing. My biggest gripe is that I feel like the only reason it was voted #1 is because people didnt think about it, they just listened to their favorite creator and everyone had a boner for sailing immediately
They should implement minigames or optional routes that give slightly less xp. Could see agility/fishing/crafting/magic etc... There can be a lot of potential in terms of areas/routes.
Tasty, I love you You're just the right amount of sane yet delusional guy Makes me want to root for you while making me double check I'm not getting roped in
I'd like to see a way to plot a ship's course before setting sail so you don't really need to drive it yourself. That would free up time to focus on other things a player could be doing on their ship and elinate the clunky movement problem.
I think people need to take a breath. Jagex did a few things right. They posted the sailing info earlier enough that we have time to seriously influence changes before it’s to late. The easiest time to change anything is in Alpha or still closed early Beta stages.
I'm looking forward to sailing as it opens a lot of new potential multi-skill opportunities (islands with farming patches, new slayer dungeons with unique drops, new training methods for other skills, new materials, etc. etc.). The only thing I pray for is that Jagex doesn't release the skill until it's fully completed, polished, graphically and mechanically appealing, and fits into the game correctly. I don't care if it's 2028 before sailing is released, but it needs to be right on release, not a WIP.
I seem to remember Jagex telling us we would be polled again during the development of Sailing. How come it's now coming like death and taxes and there's nothing we can do about it!??
It isn't. That poll comes at the end of development (at minimum), once it's gone through development, as to if it enters the game or not. The best thing you can do now is to meaningfully engage with the dev process, get involved and make the suggestions as to what changes you'd like to see IF it passes the final poll and enters the game. You can still vote no on the final poll on principle, but if the vote passes, you've done everything you can to try to make it more tolerable. Hope for the best and work to prep for the worst outcome.
the skill only passed because reddit believed the in the potential of the skill and promises made by the devs that they just will never be able to deliver on. It's going to be a complete mess on release and **maybe** playable 3 years later
Sailing doesn’t sound fun at all. I’m probably at the end of my RuneScape career anyway so it doesn’t matter. But they should’ve polled shamanism against sailing and we’d be having a much better skill coming into the game. But is what it is.
The problem is not that sailing is too simple to be a skill, its that its too contrived to be a skill. Firemaking works because its simple: light fire -> light better fires and more things on fire. Sailing doesnt feel the same imo.
You can do the same thing with sailing as its also very simple at its core. Interact with your ship or parts of your ship, now your a better sailor and are now capable of using better ships and facilities. Not really any different from any other skills, you killed a bunch of guys with your sword now you can use a better sword. Also firemaking doesn't work it sucks, what is a better fire? Theres zero difference from the worst log and the highest level log. Literally the worst example for a skill, the only reason its a skill is because one day Andrew Gower decided why not and slapped a level to it.
Maybe I just haven't been around when it was discussed but if we get sailing can we get dungeoniring? That was the last time I played RS before OSRS. I'd be more excited for a skill that progresses other skills and intises people to do it with others. I thought the whole reason we didn't get dungeoniring is because "it wasn't a skill in '07".
@OkBoomer-p7x You're a clown. Use Google and ask it "is sailing hard." Im sure you were born naturally knowing how to hoist a sail and operate cannons. i strongly predict sailing is not going to turn out well. i hope jagex stops investing into sailing soon and do another survey to see what people want. i know half the osrs team is working on sailing and it would suck to bin the project after so long but learning to recognize mistakes that have no come back whatsoever is part of life.
Additionally learning to live with the decisions of the majority is another part of life. They poll'd extensively before investing money into the project. Majority want it. To have them scrap it now would be a massive financial decision on their part and induce prolonged polling and slower updates due to the fear that any decision by the community could be flip-flopped in 6months.

Like make it so that high sailing level lets you access actually useful new areas for other skills and new bosses would be ideal imo
man I just wish we could go back in time and make that poll fail
the sailing skill was upvoted by virgin nerds
Making it travel based would render the skill pointless. We have teleports already. I like it the way it is.

That's oké, but 70% still does.

i not said anything on sailing but if honest more rather sailing not be added as see it as terrible skill to add as feels more minigame then skill.
Last year Jagex demonstrated they were mature enough to scrap what would have been a terrible update despite considerable development having gone into it, when they scrapped the new pray book. I still hope they'll wake up and do the same to Sailing.

Some ideas for sailing:
• Agility, combat from the side of the boat, or even fishing (therefore, Combat and Fishing too)
• Expanding the wilderness.

I think sailing could be very convenient if you could sail up to any part of a beach on any island, say you want to go to northeast wildy at a certain spot, you could sail up there or if you wanted to go to the north east side of Karamja, you could sail directly where you want to on the map
Edit: could also instant sail there after sailing there for the first time manually

@lukasbryant9881 nothing added in the last 10 years had been "old-school."
Just because you don't see how it's like EOC doesn't mean that others of us can't.

Ahh.. yes…
Love you Asterix ❤
No problem
If they do sailing, I'll never max in protest.
I'm keen for Sailing! From the limited info we have it looks pretty good, shows cool training diversity and a reason to exist. I think a lot of the fear of sailing is mostly unfounded on comparisons to EOC, where Jagex was substituting content this is a pure addition. There’s so much opportunity to extend what already exists in the game with the use of the water portion of the map.
this is the way to start! love it
Classic Jagex ignoring the community and doing whatever they want.
@@rachaelscofield808210/10 sarcasm. Much appreciated!
@@joshualajoie9547 I love the way you word this. Nail on the head that explains the amount of negative comments surfacing.
I'm still cautiausly optimistic and cant wait to try it out myself and give feedback
im really glad they already said that there will be a beta for the skill i think that is really important
Not just a beta. They're doing a pubkic alpha on this before a beta. They're taking this slowly and with the consideration and care it deserves while being transparent with the community. That puts this miles ahead of blunders like EoC that were developed without community involvement.

You're just the right amount of sane yet delusional guy
Makes me want to root for you while making me double check I'm not getting roped in
I'd like to see a way to plot a ship's course before setting sail so you don't really need to drive it yourself.
Sailing should be a agility minigame but NOT a whole skill tf
If done right, it can be very good for the game. If they don’t nail it, they will not recover. Also can we get an update on god alignments 🙃
the skill only passed because reddit believed the in the potential of the skill and promises made by the devs that they just will never be able to deliver on. It's going to be a complete mess on release and **maybe** playable 3 years later
No chance that they'll nail it on release. Half will love it, half will hate it simply because its different to standard movement.
If done right > content poll passes > have great conent
If done wrong > content poll fails > devs improve
There's no we it will be a bad skill.
In your video last week did you not say there was a lot of positive feedback lol
Sail boat -> sail better boats. Pretty simple

Additionally learning to live with the decisions of the majority is another part of life.
