How Disneyland Paris can be more NOSTALGIC than Disneyland! | 01/02/19 Pt. 4

  • I know that's a crazy thing to think, but there in fact times and places when Disneyland Places can conjure nostalgic memories for vintage Disneyland. Yesterday we saw a vintage version of Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse, and today we'll be seeing a Skull Rock (flashback to old fantasyland) and walk through a Frontierland Fort! (flashback to old Fort Wilderness on Tom Sawyers Island). And I'm here to tell you, I felt it! But then there are some not so vintage attractions like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril which is...not their best work.

When I was a kid I loved to see skull rock and the pirates ship at Disneyland. It was sad when they were removed from Disneyland Anaheim. But when we went to Disneyland Paris to see a copy of them was a great thing to see.

Dear God! I am so on this trip with You! Great camerawork. I think Walt is smiling down on this place. Remember when you get back home the reason Disneyland Anaheim is so particularly special among all parks is because Disney himself created it and walked the streets tweaking everything to inspired perfection which was pretty much an entirely flawless dynamic masterful illusion really until around the late '70s... I used to be in awe in discovering even the most tiny aesthetic detail! I saw him there a couple of times. Once riding a Fire Engine on Main Street and another when he rode up unannounced in a Horseless Carriage in Fantasyland to ceremoniously open a newly refurbished Attraction. He radiated so much Love & Light it was spellbinding to witness. And You have the great privilege of being able to cruise this hallowed ground all the time from having carved out this hot gig for all of us! Thanks. Be our eyes and ears Fresh Baked!

What I'm seeing in Adventureland and Frontierland in DLP is lots of room for imagination. There's the whole Skull Rock area, the Fort, the Pirate Ship, plus a couple of places from the previous video - in all of these, Disney sets a scene and then turns you loose to play and explore. It's up to your own imagination to bring all of these scenes to life. In Anaheim, there isn't the room any more for that kind of play. We've got Tom Sawyer Island and ... ummmm ... that's about it. Everything else is pretty full with rides, shops, and restaurants.
Liz especially seems to be in to the running around and exploring and playing. Glad you had a great time there! You're making me want to visit!

I think it absolutely holds up. What they should do is a Space Mountain type indoor coaster. Instead of being in space it can be inside a temple. Kind of a mash up of Paris and Anaheim. It looked like a cool ride.

The Indiana Jones ride used to go backwards shortly after it first opened!!!! But it was so painful and almost rattled your brain out of your head that they turned it back round to travel forward. It's still quite violent and jerky but tolerable at least now. Not a smooth coaster at all!! FRESH BAKED! Love your videos David. We will return to Disneyland CA as soon as we can from the UK.

Paris's Indiana Jones: It's a roller coaster, and needs to be judged for its merit as one. As a themed attraction, it doesn't match up. Gadget's and Goofy's Sky School have better theme integration. You looked like you were having fun with the ride *as* a ride, so it at least succeeded as a roller coaster experience.
The Frontierland fort: Fort Wilderness on Tom Sawyer's Island had toy rifles mounted on swivels in the tower loopholes. I wonder why Paris' version doesn't?
Back in its day, Fort Wilderness had a snack shop that was the only place in Disneyland where you could buy dill pickles, soft drinks, chips and that sort of thing. I used to buy a pickle there every time I visited it.

    • @FreshBakedDisney

Indian jones was not an original ride at Disneyland Paris when it first opened..... it also went through a period where is used to run backwards. I’m sure now Disney corporation has 100% ownership any new attractions will be better themed and much more in line with other disney properties.

I agree that the Indiana ride in DLP is just a roller coaster, with a lack of theme throughout the queue and ride itself. Perhaps it just feels out of place because there is a Big Thunder roller coaster around the bend that is heavily themed throughout the ride, more closely matching what Disneyland California fans generally expect to see in a Disney attraction. In my opinion, DLP has room to improve Indiana with some additional in-ride theme work.
I love the fort, and am extremely jealous of it, the treehouse, the cavern system, and DLP Adventureland and Frontierland as a whole. However, that strange cupcake think needs to go...now.

I laughed out loud at the "What is this thing?!! What is this?!!!!" exclamation from David on the Indiana Jones ride, as they were about to hit an unexpected twisty turn! I admit to being a little confused by the cupcake displays too. I mean, I understand why they are there, but I don't understand why the Cast Members standing in front of them are half-cupcake and half-human. I guess they are Cupcake Sisters? It's very odd. I kind of wish that Disneyland in Anaheim would put up some strange displays for Mickey's birthday, but it doesn't look as though they are doing that. For his 100th birthday, though, I think they will do much more.

Disneyland Paris is completely Magic Kingdom in size but Disneyland based when it comes to their inspiration (well, mostly) when they made this park. Disney actually planned to build an Indiana Jones mini themed land in Adventureland at Paris but the roller coaster only survived due to budget cuts. Just imagine if the whole resort didn't faced some bankruptcy back in their early years and the mini themed land went through.

The version of Temple of Peril they got at Tokyo Disneysea, Raging Spirits, imo is a lot better themed than this one. (Though still weak in comparison to othe Disney coasters like Space Mountain, Thunder Mountain, Everest).
I have to wonder if this coaster was originally supposed to go to Anaheim? Since I know Disneyland was supposed to get TWO Indy rides (the coaster and Jeep ride), but only ended up with the Jeep ride.
Judging by the fact it’s a small coaster, and theming is minimal, gives me the impression this was one of their quick fixes to EuroDisney once it opened up to billion dollar losses. (Since the ride debuted only a year after EuroDisney opened).

Does the Indy Coaster hold up; yes and no. Yes because it reminds me of the Temple of Doom; only wish it had more Indy elements. An animatronic of Indy some in the queue on even on the coaster itself would make more better. No because as Isaid; 'more Indy elements' is needed. Also maybe have some narration on the coaster, emaple: when you get off the coaster, the line from Temple of Doom comes to mind: 'We walk from here.' would funny.

A preshow for the queue would be a nice element I think. But definitely more Indy elements

Indy is a little fun and a little weak on theming.

sorely lacking any themed presentation of indiana adventure, aside from it having been a mine cart (of sorts) and is desperately needing a theme referb and additions to have any merit in a disney park. So as a coaster, I enjoyed it from the video and just wish the loop was captured better.

Paris disney seems to have a lot of wasted space. The design is very awkward. And way too many restaraunts

It's a lot more popular than the media wants to admit.
