Hello Luke greeting from Melbourne. Loved your vlog but some pro tips for you but first congratulations on completing your outdoors project.😊❤. It would be a wise idea to take the eucalyptus out of the bed as soon as possible and put it in a large pot. The reason is, it's a water theif and it will steal all the water from the plants in the bad and lawn and it will kill everything in the process, it will also send down a tap root and if it gets Into any below ground pipes it can cause thousands of £ worth of damage so it's best to grow it in a very large pot and sit the pot on a concrete paver. Next the lovely privit bush. In this part of the world it's classed as a noxious weed and not allowed to be sold by garden centres any more. Mainly because when it flowers it can cause major reactions with people who have asthma or hayfever so I would gift it to the plant recycle bin and chalk up the experience. Lastly your lovely conifer tree. Best to top it off, meaning take the central trunk tip and cut it off/out. This will stop it heading for the sky and becoming massive, to massive for your garden. Conifers are also toxic to other plants their needles make the ground very acidic so other plants struggle to grow in their presence. Next lift the base skirt of the tree up, (take out a few of the lower branches) but be careful when doing this unlike other trees when you cut a conifer it will not regrow back in the same location. By doing this you will let the light in around the base and you could nd in some fresh compost and plant some pansies, putunia, Lilly of the valley or violets in your ice le. Lastly your conifer likes a good feed and an old fashioned trick is to dissolve a tablespoon of marmite in warm water in a large 10 litre bucket, let it cool then pour it around the truck slowly a couple of times a year, it works wonders ( this tip came from a leading nursery man). Look forward to what you do in the house next, cheers and have a great week.😊❤🐝

Hi guys WOW spectacular looking garden, well done you two, you’re going to so enjoy chilling out there! Love the fire pit… bargain, tip for you put an old grill grid on the bottom, stops the burning through the metal gives you some extra life in it, also put some compost & manure mix in your borders 25:4 each year, I use a comfrey mix & nettle mix for my garden, it’s free! Put each in a bucket cover with water leave for weeks it will stink! When smell has gone bottle up, dilute & feed your pots & plants, Epsom salt mix on the laurel bush makes it grow quicker… a very slow one that! lol
Hope you got a melton pie, I wish I’d known you were mins from me, I would have filled your car with plants for you. 🥲but big pat on the back guys 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

You need another medal for moving that amount of gravel without a wheelbarrow. Good job. The plants will soon need to be spaced out. We are all guilty of wanting to fill space but shrubs can quickly take over, watch the laurels. Finally, only trying to help ,teak oil - Dispose of any rags used to apply it carefully as it is flammable. Thinking of wheelie bin👍

Making your garden your own is so satisfyingly! When you buy plants, make sure you are reading the tags for plant growth size and planting spacing. If you plant too close you'll spend the next few years redoing the work. It is hard to do, but leave more space than you think you should.

If you've still got the plant labels I would urge you to read them regarding the width and spread of each plant.
Looking at your boarders I'm concerned the larger plants like the laurel will establish much quicker (laurels are quite thuggish) and will dominate the smaller items. Personally I'd move those Acers because they are so small, and there looks to be quite a lot of dead in that Leylandii and that will never grow back and look good.
Also check on the soil requirements for plants.
I'd suggest checking the ph level of your soil - you can get kits (and I wouldn't be in the least surprised if it were different under the Leylandii to the rest of the garden).
Lastly, if you are keeping the fire pit outside, it needs drainage holes to prevent water collecting in it and go rusty.

    • @katbar6066
      @katbar6066 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

Didn't notice your comment at first but 100% agree about moving the Acers. I wasn't sure if maybe they were different varieties to what we get in Australia but if not they certainly need to be moved before the roots get set. Luckily they have plenty of room to move them to a more suitable position- all par for the course while learning about planting.

That's what I say every time I go to a garden center - "don't know how this happens, my trolley is full"!
Love your garden, looks neat and tidy. Just one thing of advice: The trees you planted need more space in between, and it is difficult to replant them further apart when they have grown. Just plant some annual plants to fill the gaps!

Think you should repair the roof and then paint it black and it will fade into the background, you will need it for storing your garden furniture for the winter your table and chairs need to covered so the shed the perfect space also some plants need to go under cover ( I’m talking about some of your pot). Random suggestion; since Luke has mentioned wanting to remodel the kitchen down the line to make it more connected to the outdoor dinning room and make the space more conducive to entertaining, perhaps as an in-between step, he could switch out the kitchen window to make it a pass through window? I've seen other houses with these windows in the kitchen and they open so that drinks and dishes can be passed directly from kitchen to the outdoors. This could allow Luke to cook while guests are in the backyard and not feel separated from the party. I can imagine him mixing up drinks and passing them out like it was his own personal bar! Now, I don't know if this type of window is too drafty to be useful in the British climate, but it might be a way to temporarily get some of the connectivity they're looking for.

Garden is looking fa-bu-lous, well done Luke and Zara. 👍
Have you considered lighting yet? You can definately sit out later into the evenings if you have some lighting.
My house is on the market and after 40 years living in London I am about to move home to Ireland and have just had my offer on a cottage by the sea accepted so I'm already planning what I'm going to do with my new garden which has a raised terrace seating area as it's built into a hillside.
I've been looking into how to put lights around the terrace and have come up with the idea of using metal electrical conduit as poles, as it is far cheaper than buying ready made garden poles which are really expensive.
What you need and how to do it :-
As many metal conduit pipes (10' × 3/4") as you need to go round your space.
Rustoleum automotive primer spray paint to paint it blacking if that's your colour scheme.
A metal string light cable kit - to prevent lights from sagging, about £20 off Amazon.
10' x 1" plastic PVC pipe - for pushing into the ground for metal pipe to go into which you cut into 2ft lengths.
Some metal pipe straps from the same place you buy the metal electrical conduit poles.
Drill a hole 3" down from top of pole.
Fix the pipe straps (hooks) using a screwdriver or drill.
Buy conduit caps to seal the tops of the pipe for a more finished look.
Bang 2ft lengths of plastic pipe into the ground (covering the top of the pipe with a piece of wood first so the pipe doesn't split) leaving about 4-6 inches of pipe above ground.
Insert metal conduit poles into plastic pipes.
Hope this helps give you some ideas.

Keep the shed! Paint it black to joosh it up. You will find it super useful to store things in, or use it as a ‘greenhouse’ to grow your seeds on when you start growing plants from seeds (it’ll save you stacks)! In time, you may want to turn it into a studio. Endless options.

Greetings Luke - That young eucalyptus - I don't know how it will grow in the UK, but if its anything like the way they grow down under, it has every chance of being a Triffid. It can become a very very big tree, very quickly (and that includes an extensive root system). At the moment those leaves appear to be juvenile form - they will change shape as it "adults" So keep an eye on it and if it starts to get excited - it may be better contained in a tub.

Dusty Miller, Lamb's Ear, and Artemisia are nice uplighting amongst the plants. Their light chalky foliage brightens the area and fills in quite nicely to shade the roots of its neighbors, too!
The DM is a leaf like plant with texture and beautiful to cut for and instantly diverse and attractive arrangement.
The LE is so soft that it is most certainly an appropriate name! It adds softness to the beds.
ART grows taller and while looking rather prickly, they are as soft as silk. It's like cotton candy. Pretty when planted a little further back towards the fence for back light (read up on that, though, as I am not sure about the black fence).
I love them for their beauty, texture, and light the bring to my beds! And, they are perrenials!

Loving what you and Zara have done to the garden. Luke I would recommend putting manure on the soil as it helps the plants grow bigger and better. My husband puts manure on every year and he always gets complements off the neighbours. Also look for the snails and slugs eating your plants.

Hi Luke and Zara. Your garden is looking great now Luke. You & Zara should be so proud of yourselves you’ve achieved so much in a short time. I love your garden and the plans you have for it. Love seeing Maggie & Ivy they are so gorgeous 🥰🫶. The blueberry cake looked delicious I’m definitely trying that recipe. Have a great week ❤️

Garden is looking great, the wisteria you have is the American wisteria it takes longer to grow. So don’t worry if it doesn’t trail far.

Hi Luke! Aww...why do I always get so sad when Mags and Ivy need to part ways again? 😔 My heart always gets heavy for them. On a brighter note the yard is coming along nicely and love the way it looks with the white gravel and black fences. I would suggest trimming off some of the bottom branches of that tree so that the trunk & new border you put around it is more visible. Will you be incorporating any raised planter beds for herbs & veggies? Have a fab week ahead guys! Much love from Fort Worth, Texas! 😊🦋☀️

I wonder if there'd be enough room for a small greenhouse next to the shed once it's been moved. I don't know if you'd get enough sun at the bottom of the garden but might be worth considering. I'd definitely watch you grow food and then turn it into a delicious dinner. 😊

And bonus is that there was something about your voice in this vlog…many ASMR tingles. I appreciate the vibe while I just came down with COVID last night, a few days after returning from holiday in Amsterdam,

Your garden is coming along beautifully. Well done. I would be inclined to put sleepers alongside the newly dug bed on the right hand side. It will be easier to keep the edge of the grass neat. I can visualise the sleepers being painted black but in a short time the sleepers will turn a silvery grey so perhaps you could wait to see how you feel about them.
I'm sure you will make good use of your garden - it's an extension to your home. Hopefully we will have a decent summer with balmy evenings so we can enjoy our gardens way into the night.

Hey Luke! Hope you and your family are doing well. The backyard is coming so nicely!! The pipes…have you guys thought of maybe painting them the same colors as the brick wall behind them to disguise them? I think it would be a great DIY for your channel. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Thank you for bringing us such great content.

You've been bitten by the gardening bug and will find yourself wanting MOAR plants. Please please look into shade gardens for under your conifer. It's such a rewarding type of gardening, creating a lush jewel where you wouldn't expect to be able to garden. I've just purchased a bunch of hosta and clivia to add to mine so I'm looking forward to beautifully variegated hosta leaves and bright orange clivia flowers in spring. It's winter here in New Zealand but I've still got loads of color and interest with a pink/purple variegated ajuga and a load of stripey spiderplants. In spring I'll pop in dozens of annual impatiens and have a riot of flowers all through to autumn. Please at least put in some impatiens under your conifer, guarantee you'll love the bright spot in the dark under the tree - especially with your black fence it would look stunning

Well done you guys, it is all looking so good! You will find if you do not put something to seperate the flower bed and the lawned area, that grass will encroach over time into the flower bed, and you will be forever haveing to pull it out. Might be an idea to get something put there, I liked the brick idea. Old terracotta roof tiles if you can find any will look good too! Anything really as long as it is good and sturdy and does the job of seperating between the two. Keep up the good work, you're doing well x

I got one similar to yours, but, I used the plant stand as the legs. Metal frame plant stand with round bottom and top is round with 3 metal bars between the 2 circles. That's how I raised my firepit.

Every leaf in our garden has been eaten this year, I have never seen as much damage in the 30 odd years we have lived here must be the weird weather we have had this year. Melton Mowbray is the home of Pork pies.

Your garden looks lovely. You've worked very hard. As for edging the borders i think using sleepers like the ones you have already would look great, continuing what you already have will look better than using something different if that makes sense. There will be no gardening for me this weekend. It's chucking it down in Norfolk but my pots are loving the rain . Have a great week. 🪻🌿

Lookin beautiful guys! Idk about England, but some home improvement stores rent equipment like wheelbarrows. If you're not replacing the shed soon, you could paint the front the same as the fencing to blend in and look new until then. Now you need some lanterns on the table for that nighttime ambience!
