  • Licensed Battlefield Guide, Phil Cole, makes his debut on Addressing Gettysburg to talk about Civil War Artillery. Jessie Wheedleton sits-in as cohost as well.
Civil War artillery may look rudimentary to the casual observer, but operating it is anything but. Listen to hear just how much science went into firing Civil War artillery.

To think of the required details it takes to produce a cannon is astounding. The big guns is what first caught my curiosity when I was a young boy. Hearing and feeling the sharp power is both haunting and fascinating. To think our forefathers charged the muzzles of those guns across countless battlefields. True courage.

I just added a beautiful Artillery button to my collection. What makes this one different is that it's a civil war ordnance corps button, and they were responsible for keeping the army supplied with powered and cannons and everything thing else. I did a video on it, with my west point civil war Era button. I have a Artillery officers hat patch to.

Ref: 1:22.04 => "double the killing power"; I've heard it said that canister from Napoleon cannon had a range of 400 yds, while canister from the rifled Parrot cannon had a range of only 200 yds. Perhaps this 2:1 ratio of *_range_* was, here, interpreted as *_double the killing power_* ? Kill range would certainly matter, as well as overall pattern of the balls (shot).

Sometimes, I think, people use certain phrases to be make a point and not be taken literally. But I’m not certain that’s what’s at play in this instance. I don’t know the part you’re referring to in context because I tend to forget everything once the show ends because I have to prepare for the next one. Sucks because one of the reasons I started doing this was to study for the guide exam. I can’t remember a damn thing lol

What a haphazard way to explain the various types. Heaven help the novice.

Sorry folks. I know it's out of your control, but there are so many commercials it's impossible to watch/listen to. Good content. Too bad yt spoils it.

Around 1hr 41 min mark…do we need to have a discussion about “cavalry” vs “Calvary” …I thought I was repeatedly hearing the “l” before the “v”….

We are so sorry. We will never let the conversation flow naturally again. I’ve added it to our “do not” list.
