So, there are a few easter eggs within the Mill. There are orange cats hidden throughout to reference the rides past. Some of the tombstones reference removed rides.
Today is my 65th birthday I'm having an unremarkable birthday all alone. Thank you Carpetbagger for taking me with you is the amusement park in Pennsylvania. I've been homeless since 2013 and no one wants to be your friend when your homeless so it's kind of like I've got a friend in you taking me along to places I'd never get to. Thanks
Omg I loved your reaction to the turtle! This used to be my grandma’s favorite ride so it has a special place in my heart. 💕 The recording that the operator plays of someone saying “turtle turtle” is actually impersonating a Dana Carvey character from Master of Disguise. 🐢
There's normally sound all throughout the ride. Half of it was just turned off when he was there today for some reason. th-cam.com/video/r9jYRLs2ah4/w-d-xo.html
Kennywood is so classic! Didn't particularly like the Garfield's Nightmare re-theme so I'm really happy they brought back the old Old Mill theming. Much better!
I always love the whip and the train ride by overlooking the river. The haunted house was also a favorite as I love shooting rides like buzz light year. This was disappointing.
I think they could've given riders a rubber glove or used hand sanitizer before riding and been plenty safe to use the guns. Was really weird without any sound or movement.
There's normally sound all throughout the ride. Half of it was just turned off when he was there today for some reason. th-cam.com/video/r9jYRLs2ah4/w-d-xo.html
Normally there should be 17 different channels of sound and music playing within the ride, it's not normally that quiet. Must have been a temporary tech issue during this visit - you can get a sense of what it normally sounds like by watching the POV video we released when the ride opened: th-cam.com/video/_MGDnMUx-eI/w-d-xo.html (Full disclosure: our company created the new version of the ride)
Oh my gosh! That movie reference with the turtles had me rolling!!! The first time the employee said "turtle" funny, I thought it was a coincidence. But once he said "turtle, turtle" I saw what he was doing.🤣🤣 20:43 Movie referenced: "Master of Disguise"
There's normally sound all throughout the ride. Half of it was just turned off when he was there today for some reason. th-cam.com/video/r9jYRLs2ah4/w-d-xo.html
@@ckick14 I also love the repurposed assets from the old Gold Rush ride. Still miss La Cachot though. That was one of the best Pretzel dark rides left. Lousy electrical fire.
I love kennywood. We would drive up there every summer from New Orleans to stay with my grandma. It was the highlight of the trip. I have been watching the kennywood memories documentary constantly ever since it’s release in the 80’s. Haven’t been back there since 2005 after Katrina. Hopefully one day soon I can make it back there
Since you are asking for travel suggestions, Jacob, how about a ride on the Strasburg Rail Road and a tour of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania across the road? Your color commentary would be great for these attractions.
I am so delighted by this video! I grew up in Pittsburgh and used to go to Kennywood every year as a kid. In middle school the old mill was considered a good spot to makeout lol I hated the Garfield ride, so glad they brought back the mill! My fav rides were the Gold Rush and the Exterminator! I also love that most of the roller coasters are wooden ❤
Nice to see a tribute to past rides like the train and coyotes were re-used from the old Gold Rusher dark ride....Happy to have The Old Mill back again...
I love this. I'm 45 and my dad used to take my sister and I to Kennywood every summer when we were growing up. His dad took him every year when he was a kid. I didn't like the Old Mill done up in Garfield. I like it much better now.
That’s so great they removed the Garfield branding... as soon as it went in, I didn’t understand how they thought that character would draw. People go to KW because it has some classic feel not found in many parks now.
The kangaroo is not just a kiddie ride. You should give a try next time. It’s a fun ride and makes you laugh every jump. Also so sad you didn’t ride the Thunderbolt. It’s an amazing ride and not as rough as other wooden coasters.
on the turtle ride when it says turtle turtle 🐢🐢, its a reference to the movie called master of descries (i know I wrote that wrong and I'm sorry) it's a very funny movie that has gone over looked for a long time and it deserves more ❤.
I had NO IDEA that they brought back The Old Mill (I only live about 45 mins away and used to get season passes). This makes me so happy cause I was one of the ones that just didn't like Garfield at all for some reason. Garfield was also starting to get really run down and had many no longer working aspects of the ride. Hopefully one day I'll get lucky enough to be there the same day as you Jacob!! Love your videos.
Harold is a character from when the ride was called horrendous Harold’s haunted hideaway. The coyotes and train are from another former dark ride that was in the park called the gold rusher which was where ghostwood estates is now. There are many nods to former rides in the renovated old mill. Thank u for coming to our local treasure!
I’m from Pittsburgh, I haven’t been to Kennywood in years! My family went every year, it’s a huge part of my childhood. My mom actually found out she was pregnant with me after she rode the Racer! My dad’s nickname was the Kennywood Kid. He was older and he went there for about 70 years. My parents and I would always ride the Turtle and the train, and the Whip and the Auto Race with me in the driver’s seat were my special rides I went on with my dad. He passed away 10 years ago, and seeing the wooden tracks brought a tear to my eye. ❤️
There's normally sound all throughout the ride. Half of it was just turned off when he was there today for some reason. th-cam.com/video/r9jYRLs2ah4/w-d-xo.html
When I was growing unease in Pittsburgh, each school district has its own “ special day” and the schools provided ( for a small fee) school bus rides to Kennywood. Teachers sold discounted tickets in class( I think all schoolpersonnel got free tickets)! Smart, huh!
My middle school (Sabraton Jr. High) band sponsored a "school bus to Kennywood" trip when I was in 7th gd. We drove up from Morgantown, WV. - missed the latenite fun tho, cuz shortly after sunset, we had to meet back at the buses & drive home. Used to drive up every summer w/family/friends when I was a kid. Never liked the Garfield ride - something about those neon cartoon scenarios, I see they've recycled some stuff from it for the new Old MIll. Their old wooden coasters are still my favorites! I miss the Logjammer but the water ride they run now is def a drencher on hot summer days. My son + a few old friends threw me a 50th bday celebration at Kennywood - great memories! Special place in my heart for this old park - long live Kennywood!
There are music & sound effects in the Old Mill, but it clearly wasn't working this day. The Steel Curtain coaster opened last year, but has only ran for a few weeks - it's eternally broken. In the arcade, the old machines up on the ledge used to be accessable until at least the early 2000's. They don't have staff knowledgeable enough to maintain them, so they sit on a ledge.
Kinda reminds me of a scaled down version of Pirates of the Caribbean, especially when there is the sound effects lol. That Ghostwood Estate looks pretty cool, especially in it's normal operation (had to look at other videos). How fun!
maybe I missed, it, where are the skeletons playing instruments? there's a section of the ride that lets you see outside, and there were a bunch of skeletons playing trumpets and such. it was my favorite part of the ride as a kid.
I've actually been to an old mill. It was in the State Park in Indiana. It WAS a repair of an old mill from a pioneer village, but the recreation was made in the 1930s, so ye :D.

You're in my area lately! I hope you're enjoying your stay. I rode the original Old Mill, then Garfield's Nightmare. I remember the Ghostwood Estate line was always the longest, especially the year it came out. It's sad to see it near empty now but of course what's going on in the world has made life different. I haven't been there in years, so this brings back a lot of good memories with my family and friends.
I know it’s not everyone’s thing but I would love going through that haunt over and over just to be able to see all the detail that went into it even without the scares. :)
There's normally sound all throughout the ride. Half of it was just turned off when he was there today for some reason. th-cam.com/video/r9jYRLs2ah4/w-d-xo.html
Man..this was cool. I liked the haunted mansion. Very cool dark ride. Great scenes. The boat ride pretty cool too. I would love to design one. The exterminator was cool too. Lol
Jacob, you made my day! I loved Kennywood! I like the Old Mill! Glad they brought it back! Hated Noah's Ark was closed. The Haunted House was neat, I've never seen it. Those were the best French fries with cheese over by the Thunderbolt. I loved that roller coaster, along with the Racer, & Jack Rabbit. Loved it! Thank You Jacob! Your the best!
The Kansas State Fair also has an Old Mill dark ride! It's interesting to see the similarities, although the Kansas one has a whole lot more sound and live actors among the scenes.
It’s kinda cool to see Ghostwood without the light up targets and operating more along the lines of a standard dark ride, but I wish they would have some of the more notable animations on sensors or maybe a timed loop or something.
Also, if they did that with enough animations to make the ride exciting without the interactive element, that could be a change I wouldn’t mind being permanent! A lot of the animations were broken anyway.
The Carpetbagger I mentioned this idea in a Kennywood Facebook group. Opinion seems to be that it could be feasible. It would be cool, if only until the blasters return. And as we learned from the Old Mill, Kennywood does listen to fans. So maybe it’s a possibility.
It's kinda a shame that Garfield's Nightmare is no more as a Garfield fan, I never got to experience it because I live on the west side but I'm sure it had a good run after awhile and maybe we'll see Garfield return again at the Nickelodeon theme park at Mall of America now that Viacom owns Paws Inc.
Glad to see you stopped at Kennywood. At one point the Old Mill was called Haunted Harry's Horrendous Hideaway (and trust me it was horrendous...not as much of a nightmare as Garfield but horrendous...LOL ) The Old Mill is sort of back to what i remember it to be years ago. Love the little storyline they have with the moniters. The beginning cartoon shows the skeleton riding a chopper ....the background picture is of a lost and totally awesome dark ride attraction called Le Chacot that had an 3d decoration outside on the roof structure of a skeleton riding a chopper..nice tribute (it was located on the opposite side and downstairs of the haunted mansion ride that didnt have the guns. I feel like I haven’t been to Kennywood in so many years. I miss Pittsburgh so much. Living there was awesome.
I was there when I was 7 as a break from the children’s hospital. I don’t remember a whole lot tho.

It's from the movie Master of Disguise. "Am I'm not turtlely enough for you?" with Dana Carvy. 😂
Yep.
I came to the comments to say this exact thing. It would be what I would be thinking of the whole time on the ride :)
Turtle turtle

Seems like the Old Mill was missing some music and sound in places. Maybe they are still working on it.

I LOVE dark rides, but my favorite part was the random “TURTLE TURTLE” being shouted on every turn 😂😂
I'm the Turtle ride operator in the video, the "Turtle" button is one of our favorite buttons to press. Also a guest favorite!
Also, the Old Mill does play music throughout the whole ride now!
Kennywood is so classic! Didn't particularly like the Garfield's Nightmare re-theme so I'm really happy they brought back the old Old Mill theming. Much better!

I've been binge watching your vids fell asleep watching your Kennywood from last time you were there Woke up to this one lol
Kennywood was my hometown park as a child. I love that they brought it back but wish it was more like it was in the 80s.
That is the strangest thing not to have any sound thru the ride.. almost like they just threw it together quickly...
TYGoodys Trading Post I found it scarier like that
I think they could've given riders a rubber glove or used hand sanitizer before riding and been plenty safe to use the guns. Was really weird without any sound or movement.

Welcome back to Pittsburgh!!! I am so excited about the old mill!
I loved the face that The Old Mill had no sounds. All you can hear is the water and that made it even more erie.
There's normally sound all throughout the ride. Half of it was just turned off when he was there today for some reason.
th-cam.com/video/r9jYRLs2ah4/w-d-xo.html
That’s great classic amusement park thanks for the video Jacob
So good to see you back at Kennywood! I am so excited the changed it back to the old Mill!!!!
"Turtle Turtle". It's that old Dana Carvery movie Master of Disguise. Kinda an obscure reference from the ride operator.
It is! It’s a button we push on the ride of a prerecorded pool of sounds. Kids love it!
@@ckick14 I also love the repurposed assets from the old Gold Rush ride. Still miss La Cachot though. That was one of the best Pretzel dark rides left. Lousy electrical fire.

that was when every park went with cartoon tie ins.. six flags got WB, Cedar Fair got Peanuts, etc.
Maybe they should have rebranded it as a meme ride........what with Lasagna Cat and Garfield Minus Garfield being popular.
And King's Island had Hanna Barbera.
The kangaroo is not just a kiddie ride. You should give a try next time. It’s a fun ride and makes you laugh every jump. Also so sad you didn’t ride the Thunderbolt. It’s an amazing ride and not as rough as other wooden coasters.

This ride needs a soundtrack!!
The lack of sounds/music in the old mill just makes it feel uneasy and may creep out the kids/future guests

you say that like it's a bad thing. the old mill is supposed to be creepy lol
I thin that it needs an announcer kind of like what the The haunted mansion has
