It's wild to me how these things keep getting so much bigger yet their backseat room is only good enough for young children. I will say this though, in my opinion, the GM twins are more appealing than most of the midsize trucks right now which I never thought I'd say.
Only the mid-size though. I am no fan of the looks of their current full size trucks. Those for height reaching hoods, bed integrated side steps and strangely attached side view mirrors. And then the large entertainment center lcd displays.
I grew up in western Nebraska and we had a regular cab bench seat. My option was to sit 4 across with my sister and mom or I could ride in the bed. It is amazing how good kids have it now.
Goes to show it'll never end. They already deleted 2, then deleted 4, and then, they had to deactivate 2 more haha. Not much left to delete and deactivate.
They really are great off road. I got to drive and then ride shotgun at the Chevy training event in July at the Monticello Motor Club. They had a Colorado ZR2 test at the off road course off site from the main racetrack. Twist ditches, steep uphill and downhill grades, etc. We had both regular ZR2 (which is AT4X in GMC speak) and Bison (AT4X AEV in GMC speak). Last lap of the course was a full on baja assault drive with the pro driver at the wheel. GM did a great job with the suspension on these trucks, and the engine and transmission and cooling system didn't flinch once. The torque down low for slow speed off-roading is very welcome. For the money though, I think the ZR2 in regular or Bison are the better buy over the AT4X. Haven't driven the new Ranger Raptor or the Taco yet but really want to.
The Chevy Colorado TrailBoss seems to be the sweet spot for these trucks in terms of price and capability. Of course the Nissan Frontier is the best budget option out of all of them.
I own one of the AT4 variants... fully loaded. Almost went AT4X but after test driving both of them the AT4 was just a better deal given the much higher payload and towing limits. This gen Canyon is the best midsize on the road today. Although, the Ranger Raptor sure does provide a lot to like, I'd be happy with either.
The Bison package is really only worth it if you actually do some hardcore off roading and were going to throw on more armor and 35 inch tires. Otherwise, the non Bison editions are the better value for moderately hardcore off roading.
The big thing the Colorado and Canyon had going for them in the last generation was the 4 cyl turbo diesel, That could be modified to get rid of the government BS to be very reliable and also got over 25 MPG. Now, it's obvious that the Ranger Raptor is definitely the one to have of the top level of the 3 variants of mid-sized trucks.
@atg1338 I'm a Chevy guy, I own the previous gen diesel ZR2 Colorado. If I had to get a brand new truck, I would pick the new Ranger Raptor over the other new Toyota and GM top-of-the-line mid-sized trucks 7 days a week. It would be a legitimate option for me if it had the European diesel option in America.
One thing that kind of throws me off (besides the price) is that Colorado/Canyon seats have been very uncomfortable for like 8+ years now. Ford gets it right, Nissan knocks it out of the park. Comfortable seats should be a given in a vehicle this expensive, especially a "luxury" brand variant. Padding is cheap, and for this amount of money I shouldn't be sitting on a park bench.
Sold my AT4X for a RR a few weeks back and this was the main reason. Two test drives didn’t sus out how bad the seats were, and they are much nicer than last gen, but they are still garbage.
I thought the point of the 4 cyl was better fuel economy? So why is this getting worse MPG than almost every traditional SUV and truck with a 6 cylinder?
It's more about emissions and the cost to produce the engine and the cost of the components and materials that go into it. I'm not defending this trend, though I will say that the power curves and tuning of turbo 4s have gotten so much better than they were even 10 years ago.
Not that this ENTIRELY explains it, but most SUVs and even trucks also don’t come lifted 3” and on 35” AT tires from the factory. But yeah, still pretty disappointing.
If you want to make horsepower, there is no way around it but to use more gas. 150hp 4 cylinder-> very fuel efficient. 300hp-> 4 cylinder pulling 4000lb truck with huge tires and poor aerodynamics.. not so much. The big factor here is the tires, if you put those same tires on a v8 truck it would also take a big hit in mileage
Same thing happens to any modern truck you lift and put big tires on, doesn't matter what engine is in it. They spend a ton of time and money getting the base models to be as aerodynamic as possible, once you depart from that inital design, most of that work starts going out the window.
I bought it over the ranger raptor, its a lifestyle truck, does great offroad though. Can keep up with raptors, but has a better interior and ride like a sedan. I enjoy it.
I’ve heard too many horror stories about the GM 5.3L V8 develop lifter issues due to the cylinder deactivation. The fact that this truck has it too makes me nervous. If it’s supposed to replace the 5.3, then this engine has already been gutted from a V8 to an I4, why does it need to deactivate two mor cylinders?

Capable hardware in a size that would work for me but the headlight controls and white vinyl wherever your dirty body touches are bizarre choices by GM. I dont need all the horsepower in my midsize but I would enjoy a linear throttle response and reliability. I feel like the Frontier Pro 4 X is the way to go.
I came close to buying an AT4X instead of my 4G TRD Offroad... but I ultimately it was the styling of the truck that turned me away. I'm sure it's a very capable truck (and I've taken my Taco off road a few times already--nothing broke yet knock on wood) but I didn't like several things about the Canyon--I didn't like the 20 year old shift knob, the football size GMC logo on the tail gate or the rear lights, I didn't like white interiors (they should have kept the AT4 interior colors on the X), I didn't like leaf springs, I didn't like the manual rear window (I do like mine open when I'm at the beach), and I didn't like the blue paint they used (I would have preferred a steel blue like what used to be available on the Sierras).
@@NomenClature-o8s Still in a way better location than the 2nd gen ZR2. I have a 22 and the shock mounts hang even lower. They are also closer towards the diff.
Jack, I bought a ZR2 Colorado last week. Agree with the ride. Very luxurious and Raptor like. Motor is great for a turbo 4 banger. The price though compared to a full size and the amenities was very disappointing. I was shocked to discover, and I see your did as well, that I had to put a garage door remote on the visor. Does GM not think people will park these inside? I am shocked that is not on the AT4X which is approaching $70K. For a mid-sized truck. Also on the Colorado all for your lights, all of them are controlled by the large touch screen….
these guys dont know anything about trucks. they never leave the road. never tow anything. never even put anything in the bed unless its done as a joke. watch truck king or tfl.
GM is going to sell a lot of these. Very nice truck and relative to others similarly equipped the price is a bit high but not ridiculous. Ranger Raptors easily get into the mid-$60ks quickly. So not cheap to be sure but a lot of truck for the money.
I'd describe it as a Red Neck Supra. It looks fantastic but so much utility has been sacrificed for the looks. How much wider is this car at the fenders vs. at the base of the door glass? I'd guess they could have put an extra 2 inches of shoulder room on each side without making the truck bigger. It also is fairly gigantic and still has a rear seat that no one with a Corolla would envy. And it's NOT small. Though it's very very good looking, my 70k would get an F150 with the PowerBoost or perhaps the Lightning now that it can be charged at a Supercharger. All the extra room in the back seat and bed are worth giving up the looks. But it's really nice.
15 mpg for a 4cyl. Truck over ,$60,000 Is that value? I remember a time when you had true choices when buying a veical, 5 different engines, 4 different transmission rear axel ratio ,bed configurations, , not to mention interior choices.
At 14.5 mpg, is it really worth it as a SUV replacement? I think this must be a very niche car for someone that really really wants to do a lot of offroading
this engine is meant to replace the 2.8 diesel, 2.5 4cyl, 3.6 v6, 4.3 v6, and 5.3 v8. With how much boost this thing has I think it can fill all those roles, provided it stays an internal combustion engine and doesn't become an external combustion engine
14.5 mpg is insane. My old LX470 with seven people in it and a tent strapped to the roof rack gets closer to 16 on a long road trip, which includes hours and hours of low range crawling. With a lift and KO2s. 6 hours of exclusively low range rock crawling and it got 10.5mpg in Moab.
If you liked the Porsche 911 Safari, you would love the lifted Camero z42-LT4-ZL4 on a Fox suspension. Compare to the Mustang Raptor and Audi TT_allroad. Then buy a WRX Baja Wilderness s209 Spec F..
Jack is 💯 right about what GM offers in the non decked out trims of this segment. GM offers more bang for your buck by a long shot outside of the halo models.
Cylinder deactivation…..in a 4 cylinder? Why? That’s a huge no from me. Seen enough problems when it was on the V6, at least that application makes sense IN THEORY. Four cylinder? Why?
Ah yes, another midsize off-roading truck that costs as much as a Mercedes-Benz for the buyer to flex on the other husbands in the Target parking lot. White leather on an off-road truck! What could go wrong!? While this may be a better value than buying and putting on all the aftermarket parts on a base 4x4 Canyon, holy crap is this thing expensive. Another good review from Savage Geese.
The thing with trucks today is that they are expected to do everything, haul groceries home, haul mulch, haul kids to school and you ass to work daily, haul the family comfortably to the beach for vacation, not kill you with horrible gas mileage. Yet it still is expected to be a competitive off-road er and look the part. All that, along with all the tech of a modern car and a Bose stereo system, is expensive. Very expensive.

Looks really badass. Sadly for 70k I would expect at least a TT V8 or an LT and just better overall quality.
Advanced shock absorbers with very primitive springs. Nice job GM.
Don't really need crazy springs do you?
And the shock mounts hang beneath the rear axle…waiting to be destroyed by a rock. I can’t believe GM is still making this cheap concession.
They are next to the wheel now. Just like a Tacoma.
@@NomenClature-o8sThey are there and remain there for a good reason. Please think!
@@NomenClature-o8s Still in a way better location than the 2nd gen ZR2. I have a 22 and the shock mounts hang even lower. They are also closer towards the diff.
Good news Toyota Tacoma announces in 2025 they are bringing back the V6 engine!!!
Interior styling wise, it’s pretty impressive. I almost forgot it was a GM vehicle.
AWesome overall review!
Omg you had to use a garage remote😢😢😢 poor lil thing
A comparable full size AT4X or ZR2 is over $100k.
How refined will it be after 10 years and 150,000 miles?
You think it'll last that long?
It will still be fairy smooth.
Quite refined. Likely using a bucket and a blast furnace I guess?
@@ytj22 For sure. Just a blank canvas for my liberal coating of Armor All.
Damn Jack lookin shiny in the interior segment
Yeah i was debating myself between a Ranger Raptor or a ZR2 Bison. I think I want the Ranger more.
No cooled seats on the Ford Ranger.
15 mpg for a 4cyl. Truck over ,$60,000 Is that value? I remember a time when you had true choices when buying a veical, 5 different engines, 4 different transmission rear axel ratio ,bed configurations, , not to mention interior choices.
Wait, that price is a typo, right? Like, this can’t cost as much as a lower spec Range Rover, right? This is a $40K truck, tops.
Damm isn't there a/c in the shop ?? Jack is sweating like a pig in November !!!
At 14.5 mpg, is it really worth it as a SUV replacement? I think this must be a very niche car for someone that really really wants to do a lot of offroading
Duh!!!!
this engine is meant to replace the 2.8 diesel, 2.5 4cyl, 3.6 v6, 4.3 v6, and 5.3 v8.
Does 27psi seem like a lot of boost for a stock engine? That's gotta increase the risk of it grenading, right?
They did an interview with the chief engineer for this engine a while back, it'll probably answer your questions on this.
Nah, don't worry about it. You won't have problems until after the warranty period.
Full forged bottom end. The engine was built and designed around truck applications and boost.
@@ForeverDownByLaw lol
@@killercan10 I'll take your word for it. I guess this is the direction things are going now
I don't see why anyone would take this over the refreshed Rivian R1T.
If you liked the Porsche 911 Safari, you would love the lifted Camero z42-LT4-ZL4 on a Fox suspension. Compare to the Mustang Raptor and Audi TT_allroad. Then buy a WRX Baja Wilderness s209 Spec F..
As far as looks, I like it better than the Ranger Raptor and Tacoma
Jack is 💯 right about what GM offers in the non decked out trims of this segment. GM offers more bang for your buck by a long shot outside of the halo models.
my favorite truck to fart in
Nisan Versa’s and Sentra give me that same feeling. Absolute bliss ripping ass in those seats.
I fart in every vehicle I'm in with no quarter given to any manufacturer. We are not the same....
Ignorance
it's a touch choice between the 25 Camry and this 25 Civic hatch
More interested in those grandpa glasses 😎
Mark, Kim Kardashian has been looking for those glasses since being robbed in Paris, France a few years ago.....
I’m only interested if it can go down to 1 cylinder in deactivation mode: I want it to sound like my Briggs and Stratton lawnmower at highway speeds.
This class of truck has grown over the years to monstrous dimensions. I guess terms like 'mid-size' are by definition relative.
70K for leaf springs. I'm betting 100K in maybe 5 years.
Hey Mark, does Robert DeNiro know you stole his glasses from "Casino" where he played Sam Rothstein😂😂😂
What model of Porsche is this? I didn't know they made a truck?😮
If Porsche made a pickup with these capabilities it would cost twice as much, but it would look amazing doing it!
Canyonero was already taken?
Mark wearing his Player shades.
Good looking trucks.
White interior in a “offroad” truck? How am I supposed to cleanly lipstick shop at the mawl in this thing?
Cylinder deactivation…..in a 4 cylinder? Why? That’s a huge no from me. Seen enough problems when it was on the V6, at least that application makes sense IN THEORY. Four cylinder? Why?
That's one Profesionnal Grade price.
🤣I thought I was the only one who noticed the white leather and thought, "that's going to stain INSTANTLY"
When is the Zl1 final review coming?
Perfect for skrting around the McDonald’s parking lot.
Are you that ignorant to think this is a mall truck? You are just clueless to who buys these type of trucks.
Big fan of this truck, but I wish it wasn't still running on leaf springs especially at this price.
Very expensive.
they always include the benchmark (taco) in the titles 😁
Everyone keeps saying these are $70k. They're not. You can get them from $53-$59k now due to big markdowns.
I hate GM, but that’s really nice. Makes more sense than a Raptor ranger
Do they have a 120 month finance option for this rig? If so, I’d love to get it.
These midsize truck prices have gotten out of control
What happened to that Mark dude? Does he only review GT3RS’s now?
He works for Doug Demuro now
Whaaaat iz with the senior citizen Noggle Goggle sunglasses? 😂 pts for style i suppose!? (Truth be told - as a glasses wearer myzelf - ive used them in a pinch too)
