I think because we followed Sana help mend the bond between akita & his family. Sana being homeless, akito being there for Sana when she lost her love/father - we watched them go through hell & back, but they were scared to ruin what they had. Even though we sat patiently watching them close the gap, only to open it up again. Fuka was frustrating because she knew how the two felt, inspite saying everything. She wasn't maliciously, since she wasn't aware of the damage she was doing since both akito & Sana don't know how to control or express their genuine feelings. I don't hate fuka but, I am frustrated with her. ( also I've started watching your videos last week, love your reviews/video essays on kodocha as this was a comfort show to me. I would love to see you do a compare & contrast with the manga & the show. )
Sure! I did a bit in my iceberg video, but I can definitely do full videos on the subject! We also talk about anime vs. manga differences on our podcast.
I have a lot to say about this one. 1: This is my own theory, and I think there's some key points that point to this. It's the fact that Fuka acting as the catalyst for Sana realizing her feelings wasn't the only thing she revealed about Sana and Akito's relationship. She also revealed Akito's own insecurities. Notice how quickly Akito gave up despite how much he loves Sana. Akito, socially, is overshadowed by both Sana and Naozumi. Akito also never thought highly of himself, especially after everything he did in the beginning of the show. He actually takes up Karate because he feels he's lacking as a person. This negative self-impression makes it so that he doesn't feel he stacks up to Sana, and during the filming, when the rumors began spreading, he felt Sana was already long lost, because of course a star like that would move on from someone like him. He settled on Fuka from there, as he felt she was more suited to him, being normal. 2: That last sentence leads into the second thing I wanted to say. Fuka is very normal. She doesn't have trauma like the other characters you mentioned, but I don't think she really had to have any. Her problem of being kissed in elementary school bothering her in middle school completely contrasts with the rest of the show in fact, its such a comparitavley inconsequential event she blows up to be a big deal, that I think that's intentional. I can't say for sure precisely what Fuka represents in the story, but her tame backstory and really fun character and being just a normal person I think did no harm to the show. What she unintentionally did for Akito and Sana is more than enough, and the fact she did it from some completely normal feelings too is another example of how this show makes a great representation of reality. This is shit that can just happen, entirely unintentionally, due to entirely different circumstances coinciding for the perfect storm.
I absolutely love that detail you mentioned about Akito and his insecurities. That makes so much sense and I completely agree...maybe I will explore that more in a future video!
Please, keep spreading your love for Kodocha and making videos! This anime deserves so much love, it's my favorite anime of all time :c I'm SOOOOO glad I found your channel
I don't hate Fuka but my biggest problem with her is that she created to be another obstacle to Sana/Akito and not be her own character! Like you said she is too similar to Sana to fit Akito, and that what I really dislike about this "tool for plot convince" I hate when writers do that, it's annoying instead of creating a new way to get their characters together. As for Sana feelings for Akito, she would have understood them sooner or later even without Fuka. Since their feelings for each other is too strong for them to deny. And that's my problem with this, it doesn't feel like Fuka give too much for the story other then to be used as a plot device and nothing more.
I think Fuka was a missed opportunity. One thing I noticed throughout the first half of the anime is that sana never had a female best friend. She had many friends such as Memi but never ones she was super close with. This is most likely due to the fact she was a child star so was the odd one out. So to me it would of been great if Fuka was also a child star but maybe she didn’t make it or maybe she was trying to now that she’s older. And then they could bond over the difficulties of being a celebrity at a young age and missing out on just a normal childhood life. As for Fuka being similar to Sana.. I mean best friends are like that, twins, sisters, even getting mistaken for another because they have so much in common. Which is why it sucks when they grow apart.
Sana wouldn't have had an emotional growth and understanding of her own feelings without Fuka and Akito's relationship happening. While I didn't care for their relationship, it made Sana understand she wanted Akito in a romantic sense. I do think there are many other female youth characters that I think have gone through similar experiences like Sana such as Mikan from Gakuen Alice, Tohru from Fruits Basket, etc.
I personally love Fuka's character more in the manga version but I can sort of see why a lot of people didn't like her in the anime. It's pretty hypocritical she gets all the hate/blame when Akito could've rejected her but from the start but didn't. Though I'm not saying he deserves hate for it but it's kind of funny to see how people don't find the faults in their favorite characters. Akito misunderstood the rumors and decided to date Fuuka because of her personality traits being similar to Sana's and out his own loneliness/heartbreak (I love the manga version more because it explores a bit more of his vulnerable side/feelings compared to the anime). The thing I like about Fuka is that she never did this out of malicious intentions; she was simply grateful he helped her out/felt sorry for Akito while a part of her taking an interest in him. Never really cared for their relationship but I understood and sympathized/relate with Fuka in a way. It's honestly unfair a majority of the fanbase calls her a clone and other harsh insults because it's thanks to her that Sana finally realized her own feelings towards Akito. Without Akito and Fuka's relationship, I'm sure those two would have never gotten anywhere, overall Fuka realized her mistake in the end and broke it off because she cared deeply for both and wanted the best for them. Personally I think that takes a lot in a person to just let go while being understanding and still being friends with your ex and rival. She could have stayed bitter and resented both of them but she didn't. In my opinion I think it's a nice touch she didn't have a traumatic past, as you can see she has loving parents and a pretty normal life etc. It gives a bit more of a realistic touch that not everyone comes from a broken home. Though I do wish they explored a bit more with her character but nonetheless still appreciate her being part of the story. To end this with a note; I love your videos, keep up the good work! Its nice to see people appreciating this gem and giving it the love it deserves. I grew up with Kodocha being one of my first animes I've watched. Hopefully one day you'll do a video on the difference with the manga and show! I would love to see that :-D
I personally loved Fuka's character. I think she has good ethics and she's very empathetic : even when she started dating Akito, a part of her did that because Akito was heartbroken. I love Sana, but I think she didn't behave correctly when she lied to Ishida. Fuka thought Sana was with Naozumi, and Fuka was interested in Akito, so she bravely asked him out. Plus, I find her admirable because she rejected Takahashi since he was already dating that other shy girl (I forgot her name). She's aware of people's feelings and cares deeply about everyone, to the point where she's able to ignore her own feelings just to be ethic. I can't understand the hate she receives just because of her relationship with Akito. Her talent for gymnastics, the fact that she was able to be friends with Sana again, even after Sana confessed her feelings to Akito (Fuka was already dating him, she could've hated Sana for this, but she didn't) she's so much more than a clone of Sana
I find her feelings valid but I always found it annoying how she ran back to Akito after dismissing him like he was nothing. She’s not evil but the way she treated Akito reminded me of how possessive Naozumi is with Sana.
I dont like her, its just my preference. But I dont like the idea that what if fuka never initiates to break up, would hayama ever think of breaking up? Does that mean they wouldnt have broken up ever?~Questions to self. I hate that hayama doesnt have the balls to leave her or call off the bf gf set up even though he "loves" Sana. I know he was pressured but he is a man after all. Sana and Akito go through so much together going through hell and storms and sunshine together and then he ends up thinking romantically of Fuka with their shallow time together. That's what I hate about it. And Fuka broke the girl code.
I don't like that she was invented just to lenghten the manga because i don't believe Sana would have been oblivious for much longer at the rate they were going (she did ask herself if Akito had feelings for her in like chap 20, she was getting it) and so a rival was created but she was created as way too similar to Sana to me, she feels redudant and not interesting, i have already a character like that in this manga why would another very similar character be interesting? lampshading more than once she looks like Sana and acts like her doesn't make the lazyness of her character's creation better She was really there just to be an obstacle with little to no thoughts into her, i agree, and it's a pity, the author has demonstrated she could write a interesting, engaging rival with Naozumi and i would have loved for Fuka to have more of her own characteristics, i remember during the movie storyline that i was hoping when i was reading the Akito and Fuka's storyline i was frankly bored and i hoped we would gp back with Sana and Naozumi by the next page, i see her as a wasted opportunity for a good storyline tbh
i think the biggest problem with fuka is her gap of charisma, especially if comparete with other characters. i mean hayama's father and zenjiro for example are too much fun to watch than her 😭 and ofc she have a lot of questionable actions (she is cleary in love with hayama since the begginer, recuse to break up even know about the feelings of hayama and sana and forcing a desconfortable friendship between them. she is just a kid in the end of the day but.....pretty upset about her character in general.
My biggest issue with her is the way my country localized her character in their official translation. They tried imitating her dialect by using an actual one which made it soooo hard to read. I found myself always wanting to skip her speech bubbles because it was literally like reading a secret code every single time. Around every 2nd word she said was in dialect, so... Can't blame a translation from 2003 though, they probably thought it was a proper way to show us her dialect that way, it just was awful to read and really made me dislike her.
I don't hate Fuka but thing is that the makers didn't showed much of her uniqeness , she was shown similar to Sana through physical features and they had some similarities in their attitude like being funny and have same thoughts just as Sana . they made them different as well like Fuka was excellent in studies , gymnastics, cooking and she was smart and was like a social butterfly. they made her character to good to be true and the similarities with Sana were added just to make her compatible with Akito. she could have influenced Akito with her own traits if qualities Sana would have been missing . That might have made the story more intresting.
I know that Akito is the worst for being a jerk and a coward. He is the one who decided to date Fuka when she asked him. It is not like she would blackmail in the same way he did. She is actually the best character who helped Sana know what love is.
I don't hate her but I only hate the fact that she has same personality as sana , just why ,the writer could have given her own character personality right?😑🙃🙂
I think the reason people never hated Tsuyoshi is that he was never a credible threat to the Sana/Akito relationship, lol.
Also Tsuyoshi was there from the start tho some still hated him, lol
I think because we followed Sana help mend the bond between akita & his family. Sana being homeless, akito being there for Sana when she lost her love/father - we watched them go through hell & back, but they were scared to ruin what they had. Absolutely! This series is my favorite too. I was so surprised when I watched it and realized how obscure it was, with how good the writing is!

Hello,
I wonder did Akito like Fuka romantically in both the manga and anime? Or was his feelings towards her friendly? Love your channel btw!
Thank you! From my understanding, he never really had feelings for her romantically but cared for her as a friend. And vice versa!
@@thatkodochagirlohh if thats true then that would make my frustration with hayama subside ahahahaha
I know that Akito is the worst for being a jerk and a coward. He is the one who decided to date Fuka when she asked him. It is not like she would blackmail in the same way he did. She is actually the best character who helped Sana know what love is.

She kinda made the show a hard watch I hated her sm😭😭
change your name. I will fight you for taking up for her, she was a terrible friend to our dear Sana.
In the beginning absolutely. I felt she realized what she did wrong after seeing how much Sana and Akito were hurting though.
