Enter the world of khayal through the velvety, expressive voice of Ustad Waseem Ahmed Khan and his penetrating sense of drama from the Agra gharana school of music. From a family of masters, Khan began his training at just six years old, and this is his debut UK performance. Witness the exploration of the raag as he paints surreal imagery, accompanied by the superb Milind Kulkarni on harmonium with Gurdain Rayatt providing rhythmic support on the tabla.

    More about the music:
Poorvi is a sunset raga, which to many listeners evokes a serious, mystical mood. It originated in Eastern India, evolving from Raag Purvagauda by around the 16th century. It is the fundamental raag of Poorvi thaat [base scale], but is is somewhat rare today, with the structurally similar Raag Puriya Dhanashree often being preferred.
Poorvi differs from Puriya Dhanashree principally in that it can take both a shuddha and a tivra [natural and raised] Ma. It takes the swaras SrGmPdNS, forming an angular shape which mixes wide and narrow tonal intervals. Ga and Ni are respectively the vadi and samvadi [king and queen notes], and Sa and Pa are often avoided in ascending lines, giving the scale a characteristic vacancy.
    Musicians:
    Waseem Khan (khayal vocal)
    Gurdain Rayatt (tabla)
    Milind Kulkarni (harmonium)
Recorded at the Darbar Festival 2021

What a voice, long time since I had heard a male voice so good, it was nice to see Panditji encouraging his tabala and harmonium players... Perhaps they are performing together for the first time.... Darbar brings out the best in all the artists who perform there.
    Thanks Nirmal ji 🙏

On-line lessons. What a great idea. If I were a few decades younger, i would certainly sign up, I came to California in 1968 to study with Ali Akbar Khansahib and this would be a great blessing. I can barely hold my sarod anymore, but still love the music, thanks for the channel.

kapil Dev ji and Ustad Waseem Ahmed Khan both are belong to separate art form of India. kapil dev is a legend crickter but Ustad Waseem Ahmed khan belong to Indian Classical music of Agra gharana which is very oldest gharana of Indian classical music. All the artist or kalakar of Indian classical music should be respected.. it is my opinion. 🙏
