I’m looking for a vid on how they manufacture sodium valves.

    Hi there!
Can you please tell me what is the inner diameter?
    Thanks a million!!

The purpose of the sodium is secondary to the hollow stem purpose which is to lighten the valve for more valve train stability and stress reduction. The sodium is then added to the hollow opening to compensate for the loss of heat capacity due to the removed material, at which point it does what you stated, melt and slosh around, to help dissipate the heat from the valve head, up toward the cooler areas of the valve stem in contact with cooler surfaces, like the valve guide.
I must commend the amount of safety precaution you exhibited, because many have found out the hard way by accident when experimenting with substances uncommon to them, that life and limb can be at stake. I'm here following a search on the topic of DIY valve weight reduction for a performance engine build and appreciate what you have revealed regarding the integrity of these parts, which took some aggressive tools in order to dismantle them.

Intake valves are much larger and therefore heavier. I wonder why no sodium for the intake valves?

An explosion needs some sort of compression. If you would’ve just slightly cut into the sodium it would’ve exploded because of the pressure built inside the valve.

Interesting, I still got some of these old valves. I’ve seen the bigger valves that come out of diesel engines, there’s a lot more sodium in those. Maybe I’ll Nick one with a Dremel tool deep enough to expose the sodium

Hey thanks for the demonstration I really appreciate it. I have been wondering what the sodium looks like inside the valve....one more thing is you might want to consider trimming those claws down if your sharing them on the world stage. Again great video.

Thanks now i won't have to do it out of my own curiosity.

Heat the valve up to 100c and then pour out the sodium 👍

The burnt out Audi sodium valve makes the whole idea seem a bit pointless and self-defeating. Good video though, nice to see what's inside the valves.

Ford had sodium filled valves back in the 60s

Caesium would have been much more spectacular.
