    Slick presentation, but you are going MILES TOO FAST regarding inputs and outputs. Setting up external instruments like a Montage or Modx that are also controllers is not at all simple. It is actually very complicated for a beginner. Many people cannot HEAR the recording they have done via midi because the I/O setup is not easy to understand. You do not make it clear what the AUX channel is and what it actually does. Many users cannot hear the midi output as AUDIO because the in/out setup is complicated. You need to SLOW DOWN and give MUCH more detail and thorough explanations.

    I found these instructions in the Reference Manual and it may make it easier: Here's the process:
    1.Click [External] in the Console Navigation column to open the External Devices panel.
    2.Click the menu arrow for the external device.
    3.Select Edit from the menu to open the control mapping window.
    4.Click the Outputs button ().
    5.Select Add Aux Channel at the bottom of the window. An Aux Channel appears in the Console.
    6.If your external instrument has multiple outputs connected to your audio interface, add as many Aux Channels as you need.
    7.Important: Click Save Default before closing the window; we'll explain that later.
    8.Route the Aux Channel to the desired output. Your external device is now available the Console

    Hi Gregor, you're brilliant!! This actually worked for connecting my Alesis digital piano to Studio One. I had to figure out that a double click is required on the External Devices tab in the mixer section to open up the controller settings box, but after that it worked. Even getting sound to be generated from my piano with local midi disconnected within it which I thought impossible. That's genius, thank you very much, I would never have worked this process out on my own this side of 5 years :-)

Setting these up as shown in the video is still a time consuming task and maybe Presonus should consider to bring in Track Templates in one of the future updates.

    I was about to sell my Waldorf Blofeld because of how annoying it was with to set it up in Cubase (I'm a newcomer to Studio One). So in my mind I thought it would be as diificult in S1 and thar I had to do it with two channels, one for the synth and one for the audio. And then....here...in Studio One you showed me how easy it is to add an external synth and to add a bus channel. This is absolutely amazing. And I can also change the Bank and Program within Studio One. And a piece of cake to add my Blofeld as both an instrument and a control surface. I'm very happy about this. This is Christmas. :)

    This sounds awesome, however, on my system it doesn't seem that low latency monitoring applies to the AUX channel, so if I have drop out protection on high (so there is a lot of latency) and then I switch on low latency monitoring, and then I monitor the external device, the Aux channel doesn't seem to be included in the low latency monitoring. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Perhaps this is a feature request?

    My guitar is plugged into my Digitech Dt whammy pedal with the pedal plugged into the "guitar in" on the front of the Helix Rack. The Digitech Whammy pedal is connected from the pedal "midi in" from the digitech whammy pedal into the "midi out" on the back of my Helix Rack with a 5 pin midi cable. For example i want to record a guitar track and program the external digitech whammy pedal within studio one 6 to change sounds such as program change,modulation and expression " Please refer to the band Humanitys last breath' As this band does exactly what I am trying to Achieve by using the Digitech DT whammy pedal with automation. So with that being said. Once i record a guitar track in S1, and within my guitar amp sim i select "Read" I then add a seperate instrument track below my Guitar track. Within my Instrument track I select the Digitech pedal that is setup as a new intrument in the external devices panel as well as setting the Digitech whammy pedal external device to "Read". When i go within the intrument tracks controller setup the Dt whammy CC notes start from 0-127 with CC0 starting with "Bank select MSB" then CC1 being Modulation and so on being CC11 for expression but there is no "program Change" within the list of CC commands for the Dt whammy controller setup. Am i missing something? Ive reset the Digitech whammy pedal and also its pedal calibration. There is also a lot of midi configurations in the Helix Rack Itself that i may be doing wrong. I just know there isnt a specific video for this in studio one and when ive asked why its due to midi complexity.

    Too bad there's no latency compensation during playback. I like to use Maschine for drums and my Behringer TD-3 using its internal sequencer, but it always sounds slightly off. The weird thing is that when I record the TD-3 to an audio track, that audio is then properly latency compensated. The latency compensation just doesn't seem to work during playback.

    Please, StudioOne seems to have no option to display or work with external instrument preset listings. These seem to be completely out of reach. of course there can be thousands of them. do you know of any way that the preset listings for external instruments can at least be displayed within StudioOne.

      @esemceX hello. yes SQ is a masterful work. and you are certainly correct to recommend it. I have spent many emails speaking with Mr.L who designed the software and built it himself. He is a man of deep honour, and a pure gentleman. yes, SQ offers an important landmark in that it will run as a VST behind S1 and allows full access to the preset listings in an environment which (after study) is fairly easy to navigate. However, at present release (2023) this software package will only offer access to a single instance of an external synth. EG. if you have 2xU220 and 3xU110 then you can only see one of each of them. Mr.L assures me that he will fix this issue in due course, though considering the complexity and diversity of the vast range of synths which SQ is capable of addressing, I would allow him a bit of time to get to the issue of multiple instances. - Hope this makes sense. 🙂

    You addressed my concern right at the end, but only briefly. When we do the real-time bounce, are there any other steps needed to record the audio? Any options like record insert versus keeping it as an insert? Does the aux track turn into an audio track? It would've been nice for you to continue this through the bounce process.
    Thanks for the tutorial!

    • @presonus
      @presonus  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Bezo, sorry for not addressing all of your questions here. There are no other steps required. All inserts applied on the aux channel will be rendered into the audio file if you export Mixdown. You also have the option to directly reimport this file onto a new audio track if you want to resample - but this is not necessary (unlike in the old days). I hope this helps! -GBY

    • @Bezowinz
      @Bezowinz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      PreSonus Audio Electronics, yes it does help. Thanks for responding. I was actually thinking about reimporting to an audio track, not bouncing the mix to audio like I said. Similar to when I use virtual instruments, I like to convert everything to audio before I mix.
      I guess my real question is, is converting hardware audio a similar process to converting virtual instrument audio, with similar options regarding inserts?

    I've had an issue and I've seen others express the same. It seems that when you have the external instrument set to an aux channel, the bounced audio has extreme latency that cant be fixed by the usual methods. What I have found works is to set up the instrument just like this video says, and after you insert the external instrument into a project, disable the aux track in the instrument controller setup menu where you first created the aux channel. When you arm the track it will still play the audio from the aux channel, but when you bounce the audio it will provide a different bounce instrument option that will keep the audio in sync with the midi.
    the only thing to be careful of is when you bounce the audio, it will ask you to manually set the I/O for each external instrument you're bouncing.

    • @fingerhorn4
      @fingerhorn4 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same here. And I think I know the reason. Look carefully at Gregor's set up. He is not routing the external midi synth directly via USB into Studio One. He is using a QUANTUM audio and midi interface and routing the external synth into that, and THEN into Studio One. Without that intermediate device, you cannot just set up an Aux channel. I'm pretty sure of this because I spent hours and hours trying to do it. When he sets up the Aux Channel it is the Quantum device that is providing the link to the "output" option in the external instrument dialogue. Without that step there is no "output" option so nowhere to route the AUX Channel. This is a bad oversight by Presonus and is counter to their explanation about setting an Aux fader.

    I cannot get Studio One to play any external instruments I have connected. I've got USB MIDI connected and I can use my controller keyboards perfectly well but getting Studio One to play MIDI out to a hardware synth doesn't seem to work. I assume it is something in the set-up but this video just glosses over the set-up with out explaining what each thing is for. e.g. I have no idea what the "Receive From" and "Send To" settings are for. Are they for the instrument you are setting up or for Studio One? i.e. Is it "Studio One Receive From" or is it "Instrument Receive From"? I can't find anything abut it in the help and I cannot get my hardware to respond to MIDI from Studio One.

    Can you explain a little bit what you are doing starting at around 03:55 ?? You have two Pro-2 devices. Why did you pick the lower one? Why assign it to Aux? When you click on Aux a fader appears called Inserts. So is this basically equivalent to creating an instrument track and assigning the external instrument to it?

    • @presonus
      @presonus  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, yes that's right. As I mention in the video, the Instrument Track is just sending out the MIDI data. But in order to hear & record the synth in Studio One, we also need to capture the audio that it's sending back to us. That's why we're connecting the Aux to the Instrument Track. This way we get both Midi and Audio in the same Track, which is very convenient. Hope that clears things up. -GBY

    • @dennmillsch
      @dennmillsch 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@presonus Thanks Gregor. Only question left is... why did you pick the lower Pro-2 on the list? Why not the one at the top? The reason I ask is because I went through a lot of frustration trying to get my external keyboard, Yamaha S08, to play back audio. It appears that when I load the driver for the Yamaha keyboard, it creates two instruments, S08-1 and S08-2. I assumed either one would work, but nope. After great frustration with Studio One I decided to try my Finale notation program to drive the Yamaha. If I picked S08-1 it worked. If I picked S08-2 it did not. And it turned out this was also the case with Studio One, that only S08-1 would play back, not s08-2. So how was I supposed to know which one to pick? There is guidance for the Yamaha driver or anything else. That's why I'm asking why you have two different Pro-2 on your list, and why did you pick the one you did. Could you have picked either one?
      Also I find the terminology is a bit confusing. In Track View we have either "Audio" which refers to an actual analog signal, whereas "Instrument" refers to the recording of MIDI events. But when defining an external device, the word "Keyboard" is now used for the MIDI device and "Instrument" is now the analog device. Since "Instrument" has somewhat different meanings depending on context, I have to think harder, it's not as intuitive. Maybe with time it will make more sense, but at first it's confusing.

    Some incorrect things there:
    1) You would only need local control set to off if you are connecting both MIDI In AND Out to the computer. If you're just connecting MIDI In, then you can still play the device's keyboard without having to route it back to the DAW - the disadvantage is that you won't be able to record automation on the synth's knobs, but some synths don't even send that information, to begin with.
    2) At 3:36 this is not true, there are quite a few DAWs that can do this now... Bitwig Studio had it basically from the start (HW Instrument), Ableton has it too (External Instrument). I'm a Studio One user myself, so I'm not trying to start a flame war, but the fact is this functionality is not original to S1. One of the big reasons I've thought about switching is the lack of this, so glad it's finally become available - also thanks for adding external clocks.

    Gregor, thanks again for an excellent tutorial. But I’m Thor clear on this video on how to do what I’d like to do.
    I’d like to record my external synth as MIDI. I’d like to be able to edit the MIDI, but have it play “as if” it was a virtual instrument, just an external one. So I WANT (essentially) a MIDI track. In this video, you didn’t really demonstrate recording, editing it, etc. I’d have liked to have seen what you end up with on this new hybrid Studio One 5 track when you record. Is it audio? MIDI? Is it both? Thanks.

    • @presonus
      @presonus  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi David, can you clarify what you mean by "when you record on this new hybrid Studio One 5 track"? It will behave exactly the same way as any virtual instrument track does. For example: If you bounce an event of Mai Tai, Studio One will render it as Audio and insert it on a new Audio Track - This is exactly what would happen on the external instrument track as well. Editing wise, it looks and feels identical to working with a virtual instrument track when you set up your external instrument as shown here. Hope this helps! -GBY

      @@presonus Hi, first of all... Thanks for the quick reply. I often tell people considering S1 that the best feature of S1 for newbies is... "Gregor" to help learn.

    • @davidblickstein
      @davidblickstein 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK, so maybe I'm just completely confused here but here's what I need clarification on.
      There are workflows where (I presume, perhaps erroneously) that an external SGU can NOT "behave exactly the same way as any virtual instrument". And that... would be workflows where you EDIT the MIDI and thus require the audio to be RE-RENDERED.
      And my assumption is that while S1 "knows how to" re-render a virtual instrument-generated audio track (the same way it does when you export a mix or a stem)., that it does NOT know hot to do that for an external SGU which of course (unlike a VST) must be done in real-time and on demand with actual audio going thru the interface, etc.
      So what I'd like to see explained, perhaps in a subsequent video is the workflow where I record an external SGU track this way. Then... I edit the midi in some way that causes the audio track that was record to NO LONGER be an accurate reflection of the MIDI track.
      NOW.... what state is the associated audio in? How do I get the audio track re-rendered to reflect the MIDI? etc.
      Hope that explains what I'm looking for. And... has to be said... thanks again for ALL that you do, and... for how WELL and DEDICATED you do it.

    • @presonus
      @presonus  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davidblickstein Thanks ever so much for your kind words! To your question: Well, most people would just not render their virtual instruments at all until it is time to render the whole song - only then they would be exported into an actual Audio file. It's the same idea with external instruments in Studio One 5 with Aux Channels. Simply assign program and bank numbers in the track inspector on the left to have your external instrument recall the preset used in your Song, then apply any processing like you would on any virtual instrument, and render it with everything else in realtime at the very end. If you want to commit, you can print any external instrument part before you export a mixdown of course. The workflow here would be the same as for any virtual instrument event that you want to commit to. Simply select the midi notes you want to render, then "bounce selection" with cmd+b (Mac) or ctrl+b (Windows) to bounce to a new Audio track. The Midi event will be muted, so that it doesn't play twice upon playback. You can also render in any used insert / send effects by using the "Mixdown selection" command instead. Hope this helps! -GBY

    • @davidblickstein
      @davidblickstein 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Let me float the "use case" here for you as to when you would want to render your external SGU track to an audio track. This is the work flow I'm trying to accomplish.
      You record a track at home or at a soundcheck when your SGU is connected to your computer. But then... you want to take your session to the hotel room... or the bus. .... or use it on another computer.... to do some MIDI editing). Some working environment where you don't have access to the SGU. Granted, what you can do is very limited by the fact that you can't accurately hear your edits.
      In fact, it might make sense to NOT have it as an SGU (have it as a VST) while you are still editing it, but maybe you really prefer to edit hearing audio of the SGU to hear it in context.
      Now, you may ask "why not just use VSTs"? Well, it's a reasonable question. I'll tell you why at least *I* dont'. I have a Korg Kronos. We are an opening act for nationals. Most of the time, we're told we have 10 minutes to setup, 5 minutes to sound check and 10 minutes to get our stuff off the stage. (That might be a generous stage manager). So I like the fact that my setup is one very capable keyboard (a Korg Kronos) , a stand and my IEMs.
      If I was to use VSTs in the studio, and wanted to replicate that live... OK... I know how you'd respond: "Hey Dave, the S1 V5 "Show" feature" was MADE for you!!!! And I love that and will use it. But... It means that I have to have a laptop in my rig. And well... I LIKE programming my Kronos. :-)
      So... that is why I prefer to record and perform with an SGU. But I also need to work when my Kronos is not around. Back home. In the "truck". Starbucks wouldn't let me set it up at my table. Etc. :-)
      So I do recognize this may be a very hybrid use case that is not worth supporting. But if not... here's the features I could imagine adding to S1 to support it.
      1. Support the notion of knowing a) WHEN and b) WHERE (what sections) a MIDI edit or what not requires the recorded audio to be reprinted (it is "out of date" due to the MIDI edits)
      2. Support a workflow for reprinting it that doesn't involve muting all the other tracks, and blah blah blah.
      3. Support the notion of a "substitute" VST that is used when the SGU is not available.
      If you think this is crazy, too unusual a use case, and not worth it, I will NOT be offended.
      I'm just grateful for even the time you've spent reading this crazy idea. :-)
      Thanks again.
