Robin Williams was a great joke stealer.
I’ve heard the Robin Williams stuff explained this way: the man was constantly doing improv and crowd work, and when you’re doing that as often as him, pulling rapid fire from your subconscious/instincts, you’re bound to unintentionally pull out something you heard another comic say. As far as I know he was never known to have a stolen bit in any written material.
❤❤❤❤
Yeah, I've always cut comedians a lot of slack on joke stealing. I make a lot of wisecracks myself, and honestly, there's times when I have no idea if I'm coming up with something original or unconsciously repeating something I've heard. But then again, I don't make any money off jokes. I might look at it differently if I did.
You left out the cocaine……All the cocaine. The massive amount of cocaine. It may have had a slight effect on both memory and giving a shit about doing others lines, both comedy and coke.

@@darkblade3897 here’s the thing about comedy. Everyone steals from someone . Whether it’s verbatim or they switch up the joke to suit them better. It’s insane that people think Joe Rogan never used any material or changed material from someone else once upon a time. I love Joe. More than Mencia more than Williams. But guess what. They’re all guilty of it.
@@darkblade3897 every day I hear someone on a podcast say something I’ve thought tons of times to myself that I never thought anyone else would say or think. Yet they say exactly what I was thinking. Many times I’ve watched comedy specials where the comedian has said a joke or told a story I’ve literally thought of myself……. are they stealing from me or anyone else who had those same thoughts or jokes in their mind? Most jokes are fabrications of stories anyways. Just ask Sebastian, he’s admitted a lot of his material he claims his father did or said are stories and things he’s seen and heard around the neighborhood. Fun fact his dad wasn’t the guy who put the anti freeze on the bologna. It was a guy down the street. Should that guy sue Sebastian because he stole that idea from that guy and made it into a bit?

@@jimmelton5846 that's the thing -- I don't have anything against you for stating your opinion. Robin Williams was on a lot of coke back in the day. Think of how fast he spoke and how quick his mind worked. I honestly doubt he was doing it purposely. He didn't do a lot of scripting even in his movies. He was always well known for add-libing while he worked. From all the stories I've heard, he was always a great guy and would apologize when he did something like this and try to make it right.
Robin would lift jokes. He also made a habit of paying dudes who lifted from, so that’s more admirable than some of the other guys we know of
That terrible Ghostbusters 'comedian' Leslie Jones had a habit of asking for money and then never pay it back but also walk in during her big screen days and push people out of their scheduled times. Bumping someone theyd say. There's a reason you don't see her in anything anymore, no one wants to work with her

I don’t get how people get mad at Bill Maher when he makes shitty jokes like , “if you can imagine he’s older than me” he’s a simple idiot, he’s not edgy, his humor is for PBS
Robin did do this from time to time. Usually not too straight blatant theft. He was also known to frequently send a check to the comedian he borrowed from.
I know, I know... It is rather silly to use a joke without asking THEN mail a check in the amount HE thinks it is worth
Keep in mind this was almost fifty years ago, but the checks that I've read about were in the amount of fifty dollars. So there!
Exactly NONE of this diminishes any respect I have for Robin. A kind, generous, caring man.
You can't ask to use someone else's joke thats why stealing jokes is considered the ulimate sin for stand up
@@leonconnelly5303 Robin Williams was famous for a sort of stream-of-conscious stand-up act. He very much acted and did comedy in the moment. It's why many comedians didn't get too upset with him. It was clearly more of an unconscious improvisational response, very similar to jazz, popularized for its ability to take and improvise lines from other sources. All comedians say when he was confronted he seemed sincere and apologetic. The actual feeling about his joke theft varies from person to person but from what I've gathered its less cut and dry then some people make it out to be.
Keenan Ivory Wayans almost beat the brakes off of Michael Colyar for doing the same thing...

@@ArchieStormcloudOfficial That could very well be the case. HOwever, the comedians literally have the say, and they should know better.
@@ArchieStormcloudOfficialDude got himself "canceled" by being a racist, conspiracy theorist dickhead. Play stupid games, that's what happens
Right, the world's best comedic minds are constantly on the edges of their seats, waiting to see what insane shit Owen Benjamin says next so they can work it into their act 😂 Okay.
@@webkid4567 yeah, well, your definition of "insane" is leaving Hollywood for not going with a transmission agenda, raising a family, having Logos, and growing your own food. So, there's that. You also speak with emojis.
Thomerson wrote the joke, Williams got the Punch-Line.
Settled on the ice, Bill has great analogies 😅
Bill Burr is that one cousin that talks shit about everyone yet you love em 😅
How on earth are you supposed to know every joke that has ever been told? How do people not think that maybe its possible for 2 people to have similar experiences that made them come up with similar jokes? Its like music too... some songs are gonna sound like another song no matter how you try to make it different.
Sure, but you can still steal a joke. It's still possible. That'd be something you'd discuss in the interval between the guy punching you, and Robin Williams writing them a cheque.
No one comes with the same joke word for word
Bill Maher can't comprehend about getting punched in the face lol.
Best comment 👌 😅 💯
With that schnoz I would be extra sensitive to it too 😅
Wish people were man enough to handle this nowadays.... People so quick to pull a gun.
No, they’re quick to file a lawsuit. Only certain demographics pull guns…
@@Lamtitude🙈
plenty of oldheads with guns, what that got to do with age?
I don't think what was said here is a good example of being man enough back then. He got punched over a joke. 😂

If you think it was "over a joke", then like a lot of ppI in the comments section, it flew over your head.
Love the way old people say shit. Short story short, he stole a joke and got knocked in the teeth for it. Miss you Robin you were a bright spot in my youth
After all these years, there can't be many original jokes left.
Dennis Leary was a terrible plagiarist.Whole parts of his set were just lifted from Bill Hicks.
Bill really thought he was about to knock it out the park

Bill Maher has got to be one of the most Dullest, tamest, boring "comedians" I've ever witnessed.
"Religulous" was actually a pretty good but otherwise, yeah, he's such a dull wanker.
It’s all good because Will stole Robin’s line at the end of Good Will Hunting
It was settled on the ice. 😂😂😂😂
