You can do both. The Reapers hit certain places really hard and didn't even touch others. I think the game estimates several million dying on earth per day. Assuming ME3 takes a couple of months or so of time, you've *only* lost at most 500 millionish on earth. With a population of 11 billion, that's not going to create a ghost town effect everywhere. Larger cities like London? Definitely. But most cities will not be nearly as destroyed and most places will appear untouched after just a couple years of repairs. So yeah, let's see both. Robust cities, empty cities, destroyed cities, everything is possible! There is of course the possibility of going to the Batarian homeworld. They were hit so early and so hard that they might have lost billions, maybe most of their 6 billion population. We could definitely go there and get a ghost town feeling that helps to drive home the point that some species got it much worse than others. Palaven, for example, defended itself really well with the Krogan help, and Tuchanka was never fully invaded. Both of those species are probably doing just fine.

Now that you mention it, I can actually see that happening! I loved playing CO2077. If they were to mirror that in the ME Universe, man alive that would be everything!!
I really liked ME1 because the story was evolving the whole time. You basically never knew who the main villain was. I liked how you traveled the galaxy and picked up clues. The pacing was just really good. I would like more of that, more plot twists, more mystery. ME2 has some of that too, but you find out pretty quick who you are up against and same goes for ME3. The new game being centered around Citadel sounds interesting, but i dont think its a good idea for the franchise. Mass effect was always, since release, about jumping from planet to planet. If we were bound to the Citadel for a longer period of time it could get boring. The name mass effect itself hints at travel (using the mass effect phenomenon). If they manage to make us travel all over the galaxy to solve quests on citadel, it could work, but it has to be well executed imo. Either way, thank you for another vid Kala, thank you for fueling our interest in the franchise, i know it aint easy with not many news coming out.
I always thought that the Citadel being the main focus would be an interesting Mass Effect game, like imagine being a C-Sec officer or something. But one of the biggest things about Mass Effect is traveling throughout the galaxy so staying solely on the Citadel would take a lot away
I’d absolutely be up for more Aria. She has more layers than given credit for, and is deeply compelling. I typically play as paragon as possible, but to me, Aria demonstrates how I wish renegade had actually been implemented in the series.
If it's gonna be ME1 style investigation & planetside exploration, plus just a few years after ME3, plus with ME3 save import, plus with the return of Shepard, Imma kiss the feet of everyone at Bioware for a week
Everything else is possible but not the save import, the ending's choices are extremely different from each other and they would basically have to create 4 separate games to account for anything
No I don't want a game solely about Aria, I want a choice of male or female protagonists, and not the ugly style of protagonists like we got with Andromeda
@@Penigale Haha, you could have pretty women in Andromeda, they deliberately made her ugly because beautiful women in games are somehow a threat to real world women.
@viperswhip id doubt it. All the characters look odd in Andromeda, its more of a problem of not converting the assets from Unreal to Frostbite. Your issue exists for sure, but most likely not in andromeda.
@@Penigale what do you mean ONLY or First. BioWare made Inquisition on Frostbite. What you mean is more like ..BioWare Austin was new studio tasked to do Andromeda, main BioWare that did ME's was doing Anthem. And yes BioWare Austin was closed.
I want jumping, proper Mako exploration, space combat and ship customization, faction and conquest mechanics and basebuilding. The planets from ME1 were a great idea, just horribly executed. I would also love to see explosive rounds brought back. Also story continuation after the main quest ends so you can keep playing with your levelled characters. ME1 will always be my favourite. It was perfect to me.
Thanks for the video. First thing that sprang to my mind when I saw the N7 picture with the bar was... Hey that looks like the Afterlife on Omega. Wich would make sense if we see more underworld stuff an Aria again.
This armor reminds me about Thane and how his "armor" was sleek etc. You know what would be funny? If this "Agent" is going to somehow tie story of Shepard, like find his body or something like that. EDIT: Now that I'm thinking... Yes, Reapers are gone... but what about those who created them? Shepard talked with them. Maybe that could be a new threat? They can control mind of other organics, so why not put that into a plot with syndicates in Citadel? (have them use organics to do some stuff and "Agent" is trying to figure it out, stop it etc..)
something i want in regards to aria: have it be far enough into the future that aria is training successors, (more then one) and she has all of them going through tests, or trials or whatever underground/underworld tribulation in order to see who takes over, and she makes one of them your companion. you can help them either take over, or find a more worthwhile path with... doing whatever it is your doing.
I would love to see the Bartarians reorganize and grow really strong and launch an all out war against humanity. That would be a great game. Start out as a private in the Alliance and work your way up the ranks!
This update and speculation gives me hope for the new game. I’d love to see Aria return to the game universe, she was a great addition with ME2 and ME3 and I felt her story arc was far from over after the conclusion of ME3
I mean, the concept is interesting but I can't help but think that the most logical storyline would be a return of the Leviathans that were only in hiding because the Reapers were too powerful for them to control/deal with. Whilst they are technically benign, they were used to subjugating other species and 'leaving them alone' in return for tribute. Would be interesting to see how the modern races reacted to an attempt to restore that universal order.
It would be very interesting to see who mass effect 5 now that topics such as criminal syndicates space pirates criminal organizations slave trade show the shadier side of the galactic community and that we are in charge of putting control or at least mitigating those effects to the public and also to show us the enormous power that criminal structures have in the space of the citadel.
I actually have seen a few people in the comments think the same thing I guess I wasn't clear enough but no I definitely don't want to *actually* return to ME1 lol
@@kalaelizabeth 😆 lol. It's still a good video. ✌️ I would really love to see what happened post-reaper war so I can get that indoctrination theory out of my head! 👽😵
This will be actually cool to see like option to check whole citadel or maybe few other planets - but in their whole size, with interesting quests etc. I think they will go in some way like starfield way, probably also use a lot of procedural stuff but it wont be thousands of planets, just few.
I refuse to believe there's more Easter eggs in the 2 ME trailers. I've been over the 2 of them many times, separating the slightest sounds, filtering colours, lining up patterns thinking if I can recognise stars from any of the games....they can't be more secrets. Can they?
Bioware going for the espionage type game sounds super interesting! I do hope that the length of the game is longer. Games that take longer to complete give much more possibility for the world to unfold. A spy story where you'd dive in the dirty underworld of the Citadel, Omega or Illium would be perfect! Military stories are mostly fast pase, big action sets and huge gunfights, where espionage stories could be slower paced
I personaly belive in the N7 agent being the antagonist theory because that would be a threat similar to Saren in Me1 Where the protagonist have to take down a rogue operative in order to clear the name of the organisation. That theme is why i personaly like that theory i would like to see Me5 explore the seedy underbelly of the universe i loved that side of Me2 Wich is why im also really exited for Star Wars Outlaws that game also focuses on the criminal side of the universe and the protagonist is a smugler isntead of a Jedi
Aha, yes, yes, the threads are coming together. Excellent work here, Kala. But I found the Citadel DLC background distracting while you were explaining the cut content mission at the end of the vid. LOL. I kept trying to read the captions. I look forward to seeing if your theories are correct. They seem perfectly plausible to me. And I absolutely want to see Aria in ME5, and Liara.
I just wanted a more complex multiplayer version of the one in ME3, without the whole monotezation. The carnage of linking the explosion triggers was amazing. My Krogan Warlord and Geth Juggernaut and Human Vanguard.
I would REALLY like to see Mass Effect taking trip back in time. Like Endgame way. Getting back to certain times with Shepard, to reobtain some lost data or technology, and still do not influence the timeline, and not change anything in his current time. That would be "the ultimate spy game".
I’d like the idea of a smaller scale focused crime syndicate story maybe it starts on the citadel but spreads out across the galaxy. Maybe that spirals and leads to something bigger.
With the citadel having survived multiple previous times from the reapers coming out of darkspace to me at least it would seem logical that the Keepers would also still be around if the citadel were to appear in the next Mass effect game. From the various other youtube vids I've seen its 50/50 chance that the next Mass effect game will be set whatever amount of years after the ending of Mass effect 3 & hopefully will include all the elements and unanswered questions left unanswered from the trilogy & ME:A
Man they have so much potential for more exploring and unique gameplay. But I'm sure I won't be disapointed since all the games are very much enjoyable!
When I saw the early concept art for ME1 of Shepard wearing a coat (page 13th of 'Art of the Mass Effect Universe') and realized how similar it is to the one worn by the new N7 agent, I think they were really trying to return to their original concept of a detective/agent, instead of the military route they ended up with in trilogy. Starting some detective work in the lower wards only to uncover a bigger conspiracy and cross paths with the Shadow Broker, and then deciding whom to side with... (Q: "Is Liara happy?" A: "Depends.") Yeah, I would like that.
@kalaelizabeth There was also cancelled console game ME: Corsair, which was basically Han Solo flying in bad lands and the weapon of new N7 agent gives me the vibe of Han Solo's weapon. I think the developers are really revisiting older concepts now.
Well we couldn't romance Garrus or Tali in ME1 but we could in ME2 and given how Aria will kiss Shepard in the Omega DLC if you play it right Aria could easily be a romance option if shepard was back.
Your propensity for investigative digging is amazing, Kala ^_^. While I look forward to a more fleshed-out Citadel, I do not want to waste hard-earned N7 talent just being a 'Snoop' for some organization to solve Citadel crimes! I would rather the Citadel be there as an aspect of the game, where quests picked up would give importance to issues troubling the Greater Galaxy. I don't care if any of the original characters come back... I just want a story that gives me the same emotions I felt in ME1 when my N7 hero crawled out of the debris with a big stupid grin.
I believe that the red Illium has to do with the red sand underground trade which makes sense to your view of the underground corrupt nature that this story might take place towards.
Yep! This is a good idea, as long as it’s not a huge empty open world. A Mass Effect game with a 1313 spin on it would need to be focused and more linear.
I honestly couldn't care less if we see Aria again or not, I didn't care for her at all, specially the grandiose "I am omega BS". I hope we don't see more of Cerberus as it was, meaning as the all powerful all knowing organization. Having Miranda take over and make of Cerberus a shadowy organization working towards helping humanity keep pace with the other species but with more moral compass than previously for example would be great. I also hope that we get to solve most of the mysteries left behind. Ilos is a great example but many other remain. For example why didn't the catalyst intervene ever until the very end ? Who really created the original plans for the crucible and how? How were those plans passed from cycle to cycle ? And so many other questions I could write a dissertation about it :p For me part of the reason the ending was so crappy was because it brought even more questions to an already very incoherent story.
I love this video! This is genuinely the most exciting "What if?"-hype video about the next game that I've seen so far. I think you're spot on in terms of what the next game should be, regardless of what it actually becomes. If there is one thing that brought down Andromeda more than anything else, it was ambition. It was the need for it to somehow outshine the original trilogy. It tried doing everything all at once and it failed spectacularly. It tried being bigger and better than a universe that took the original team 3 games and almost a decade to make. If they had just taken their time and focused on an experience that laid the groundwork for what was to come in a future sequel, I genuinely think Andromeda could have been so much better. If the game had just focused on the Citadel races getting settled and learning about a bunch of new enemies, allies and mysteries, it could have bought them years of time to cook up another amazing spacefaring epic. But instead they tried to do it all in one game. If Mass Effect 5 is to succeed where Andromeda failed, I think it has to return to the same format as Mass Effect 1. Don't make the player some kind of elite Chosen One who everyone relies on; make them someone who has to prove themselves and work their way up, like the original protagonist. Make it about something interesting, but relatively small, and show us what the Milky Way is like now that the Reaper War is over. Lay a solid foundation that borrows from what came before, but can be built out into its own unique thing with its own unique cast of characters. DON'T. DO. ANOTHER. MEGA. PLOT! Reboot the franchise and let it cook. Let it grow beyond the original trilogy, but at a reasonable pace, rather than expecting a single game to eclipse a 500+ hour experience, lauded as, collectively, one of the best western sci-fi RPG's ever made. Go slow, and give me a spy-drama RPG where we delve into the consequences and outcomes of the original trilogy.
I always thought that the citadel was awesome and that there should be much more content. I always thought that you could make a thousand histories in the Citadel, with all the races, all the places. Not to mention Omega, Illium, Palaven, the Quarian homeworld, Tuchanka, Earth
Honestly with the difference from 1,2 and 3 to Andromeda is so drastic, and the mishandled recent games from BioWare like sitting for 5 years on that game where you’re in a flying suit. I’ve no interest in ME5, gaming companies lie, scam and charge more then blame players, fire good developers and give bad CEOs raises. No thank you.
Mass Effect 5 is well in production and will be on Alpha in 2025 as many on the Dragon Age team will join the Mass Effect team to finish the game by end of 2026 as DA will be out before the end of 2024
You triggered a thought (6:40) when you said `your hub in Mass Effect'. Anthem was said to have a rich campaign. Drew was involved. They may be using that investment in the next Mass Effect.
Aria? Yes Citadel? Yes I do not mind the idea of seeing the seedy underworld of both the Citadel and the rest of the Galaxy, but that does not feel like an epic Mass Effect plot, but it could be an entry point to the main quest, maybe something similar to ME1 where the goal is stop Saren, but you then learn how much bigger the problem is.
I agree it very well could be a dive into the darker elements of the ME society, but I feel like the Image of the "bar/Dance" location better fits Omega... which would also better fit an underground theme, especially since we haven't seen near all of Omega, even during the Omega DLC in ME:3. Omega could well be a central part of ME:5.
So the date 2819 would line up with the date for Mass Effect Andromeda which means we could be looking at a story of what is happening in the Milky Way as the Andromeda crew is trying to colonize the Helios cluster.
The underground crime scene angle just seems too small scale IMO. Granted, whatever it is will almost certainly seem like a smaller-scale affair than the Reaper threat/invasion, but I think underground crime would probably be too far the other way. If it were me I'd hang the next game off the back of a post-destroy ending and I'd tell the story of how civilization got back up off its arse and found its feet again. How do they overcome the relay network being f***ed? Does the coalition of races endure or given the dire circumstances is it everyone for themselves? Will anyone take advantage of the situation? The end of ME3 left us with a wealth of interesting things to explore. Personally, I think moving it forward beyond when all of that stuff is reconciled and overcome, would be missing an opportunity.
I would be interested in exploring the Citadel more but I hope it's not isolated to the Citadel for the game. The Normandy and its crew, especially Joker, should be in the game somewhere. Plus, the underground thing was already done in Mass Effect 1 with Fist and his thugs. Maybe the relays aren't fixed yet and we can't leave the Milky Way. After seeing the hints and watching your videos and others like them, I have no idea what to expect from this, but I'm going to play it anyway. Hopefully they learned their lesson after Andromeda.
Mass Effect 5-6-7 will take place during the time of the original trilogy, and as a secret dark agent your job will be to fill the story gaps, and help shepard from the background, but your main objective will be remain hidden especially from shepard. that means being close (but not too close) to him would be profitable, meanwhile avoiding him like he avoided reapers in mass effect 3 while scanning planets. and if he sees you, then critical mission failure !
Always interesting too hear Your musings. I'm not always agreeing with everyone of them. Then again, that's the fun of speculating and digging in to lore. Interpretations differ, and can often be surprisingly entertaining (In a good way) By the by, You mentioning CP2077, made me smile. Same here. I've been longing to dive into a cyberpunk-esque "underworld" on The Citadel. I had hopes that a Star Wars game would have the courage to "do" the underbelly of Coruscant. But alàs. It never came to fruition. ME5 doing it, knowing the team behind the franchise, it could possibly surpass anything Lucas Arts would ever dare in depth and lore.

Yeah there's not much to cover right now at all haha I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Fingers crossed for some mature writing like in the trilogy, and not CW inspired writing from Andromeda.
I trust Mary DeMarle.
I just hope they bring back Shepard, Tali, and Garrus and allow us to continue their romances
ME5 Aria's New Couch shoiuld be the title
As long as I have Shepherd, and I can use my save data from ME Legendary Edition I'm content
I am pretty sure this is occuring 600 years after Mass Effect 3 based on that date so I wouldn't hold my breath on having Shepherd back.
We don't need Shephard
It won't be a Shepard protag. But I bet you will be load in your save state.
Think dragon age
I don’t care about the plot just as long as we’ll bang, ok?
If it's gonna be ME1 style investigation & planetside exploration, plus just a few years after ME3, plus with ME3 save import, plus with the return of Shepard, Imma kiss the feet of everyone at Bioware for a week
Everything else is possible but not the save import, the ending's choices are extremely different from each other and they would basically have to create 4 separate games to account for anything
3:06 this shot really shows you the scale of the citadel, its way bigger then it ever feels in game
No I don't want a game solely about Aria, I want a choice of male or female protagonists, and not the ugly style of protagonists like we got with Andromeda
We won't get ugly, muddy characters anymore because Andromeda was Biowares first and only time using Frostbite
@@cracmar03 andromeda was rushed
Ilos, that planet has a lot to tell. Javik needs to go there with Liara.
I really wish that the legendary edition had opened up the citadel n let us go to all locations from ME1 n ME2 n ME3.
Yeah it really does look like we will be an agent non-Shep. I’d love to see Aria again❤
something i want in regards to aria: have it be far enough into the future that aria is training successors, (more then one) and she has all of them going through tests, or trials or whatever underground/underworld tribulation in order to see who takes over, and she makes one of them your companion. you can help them either take over, or find a more worthwhile path with... doing whatever it is your doing.
I would love to have the citadel as an open world in the game.
Don't forget Patrick Weekes were on ME1 and is now a major writer in the BioWare team as he created Tali , Mordin and Solas in DA
I would love to see the Bartarians reorganize and grow really strong and launch an all out war against humanity. That would be a great game. Start out as a private in the Alliance and work your way up the ranks!
Kala great work🎉 your are truly all we got these developer's need to thank you for keeping us afloat ❤
Imagine….. the n7 is shepards kid
This update and speculation gives me hope for the new game. I’d love to see Aria return to the game universe, she was a great addition with ME2 and ME3 and I felt her story arc was far from over after the conclusion of ME3
I bet it's something expanded with the spectres and rebuilding the galaxy
I'd like this.. just with Shepard pls
I LOVE Mass Effect 1 so I'm hoping they do go back to the beginning with 1.
Cyberpunk's city is an incredible achievement, and Bioware will not be able to just recreate that urbanism.
Kala Elizabeth always puts in work for ME content. I think your proposed ME5 premise sounds fun.
No! I want to find out what happened post-reaper war, what happened to the Normandy crew, and what happened to Shepard! 😭💔
None of what I said would prevent any of that from happening and I want those things too
@@kalaelizabeth Oh, I guess I wasn't paying attention 😂🤙. I thought your video meant a return to ME1 literally, the timeframe.
I actually have seen a few people in the comments think the same thing I guess I wasn't clear enough but no I definitely don't want to *actually* return to ME1 lol
@@kalaelizabeth 😆 lol. It's still a good video. ✌️
I would really love to see what happened post-reaper war so I can get that indoctrination theory out of my head!
Can they?
Honestly us playing some agent dealing with the underworld sounds interesting. Maybe chances we find out a plot that is planning to take over as well.
That theme is why i personaly like that theory
i would like to see Me5 explore the seedy underbelly of the universe i loved that side of Me2
Wich is why im also really exited for Star Wars Outlaws that game also focuses on the criminal side of the universe and the protagonist is a smugler isntead of a Jedi
It almost looks like the Crucible is attached to the Citadel in that poster at the beginning!
Elizabeth, thank you for this wonderful video. Lovely voice too, liked and subbed. Kind regards.
That would be cool, a secret spy agent N7 infiltrating or joining the criminal aspect of the citadel depending on paragon or renegade.
I new mass effect to be at least 300 hours of campaign story
the beam of light from London is directly leading to the citadel. perhaps earth and the citadel are linked now in some way.
I hope they let us choose our species as well as our background skills, appearance, and so forth.
I'd love to see Aria back, my fav side character
and I will flip if they bring back Aria LOL
Playing as a ruthless Shepard I always thought Aira would been the perfect romance interest
as someone who always wants to play an infiltrator I love the N7 jacket.
(Q: "Is Liara happy?" A: "Depends.")
Yeah, I would like that.
Ohhhhhhhhhhhh ill have to look at that thanks for pointing it out! I'll discuss it with Hulthen tomorrow!
@kalaelizabeth There was also cancelled console game ME: Corsair, which was basically Han Solo flying in bad lands and the weapon of new N7 agent gives me the vibe of Han Solo's weapon. I think the developers are really revisiting older concepts now.
You forgot there are 2 citadels, one in Andromeda one in milky way, this game im sure will bridge both games stylistically and gane wise.
@@The-Muslim-Samurai they call it the Nexus but it is a recreated citadel.
Well we couldn't romance Garrus or Tali in ME1 but we could in ME2 and given how Aria will kiss Shepard in the Omega DLC if you play it right Aria could easily be a romance option if shepard was back.
More citadel exploring and planet exploring please! But I was wondering what happened to everyone they just seemed to disapear.
Please please let us pick a race
We didn't get Star Wars 1313, but I would love a 1313 spin on Mass Effect with the Citadel at it's core.
And so many other questions I could write a dissertation about it :p
For me part of the reason the ending was so crappy was because it brought even more questions to an already very incoherent story.
Oooooh giiiirl you played Cyberpunk 2077 ... You already know I'm ready for mass effect to look something like that but in space.
This is EA, don't get your hopes up.
If its rebuilding the Milky Way, that could be sick
Wonder if this will be more an origin story, than a return to the Shepherd-verse.
I hope the citadel is more explorable in mass effect 5
I always thought that the citadel was awesome and that there should be much more content. I always thought that you could make a thousand histories in the Citadel, with all the races, all the places. Not to mention Omega, Illium, Palaven, the Quarian homeworld, Tuchanka, Earth
Relay station between galaxies would be my guess.
I hope that jack is the main character in Mass effect 5
Aria? Yes
Citadel? Yes
I do not mind the idea of seeing the seedy underworld of both the Citadel and the rest of the Galaxy, but that does not feel like an epic Mass Effect plot, but it could be an entry point to the main quest, maybe something similar to ME1 where the goal is stop Saren, but you then learn how much bigger the problem is.
Hmmm....I wonder if Carrie-Anne Moss has been busy doing some voice acting lately...?
We did just get mass effect themed items in destiny 2. Like an asari warlock set or the Normandy as a jump ship or edi as a ghost shell.
Always interesting too hear Your musings. I'm not always agreeing with everyone of them. Then again, that's the fun of speculating and digging in to lore. Interpretations differ, and can often be surprisingly entertaining (In a good way)
By the by, You mentioning CP2077, made me smile.
