I’ve always felt that at their core all of Lynch’s films can be broken down to a specific fear. He often talks about how fear is a large inspiration for his work. With Eraserhead it would be the fear of fatherhood, Blue Velvet would be the fear of adulthood, Lost Highway: the fear of rejection and with Mulholland Drive it’s the fear of failure. Inland Empire is a bit harder to pin down but I think perhaps the fear of one’s self or identity may be along the right track.
That's a solid interpretation.
To me his central theme in most of his work is the abuse of women and yes, in Eraserhead this theme is not really present, so not a great example to this theme but when you look at his movies starting with Blue Velvet, and including of course Twin Peaks, it's not hard to see,

the Straight Story? INland Empire? Dune? @@voiceover2191 Mulholland Drive wasn't about abusing women... maybe the brunette is the villain? Wild at Heart has a woman as tree abuser. She was the villain. Elephant man has no abuse of women.
I also wouldn't say the moist obvious one Twin Peaks isn't ABOUT abuse of women. Demonic possession and a mystically created girl.. I guess of course it's using abuse to tell sth story but that's the surface. It's ABOUT something spiritual.
It's like saying his movies are ABOUT violence. .. because they have violence. Are most movies about violence or is violence a good plot?
One of my Art Teachers First showed it to us in Class, just before Blue Velvet came out. We actually would listen to the soundtrack on a cassette tape during drawing exercises. I like how you mentioned the importance of Sound Here. Alan Splet is such an important part of how David Lynch was born. Blue Velvet and before really demonstrate this... Their collaboration is so important, and Lynch took this awareness of the dance between audio and image into his work after Alan passed away. They are two of my favorite artists of all time. Thank you for this video.

Yeah, I love this movie too. It does reflect the anxiety of growing up. I've had dreams were I am a parent and my baby dies and it feels awful, I don't feel prepared at all, and David was living it at that moment, so yeah, this movie is pretty much about him

I have never watched this movie sober
I was in a bad place when I first saw this movie,it was unnerving at the time.when I went back i was surprised by its depth,much more esoteric than I thought it was.Saturn pulling at the levers of time and space.The main character being crushed by the weight of his search for purpose in a dystopian,drab landscape.I felt Borroughs and Kafkas influence also.

No one could ever make me _enjoy_ Eraserhead but thanks for at least helping me understand it. (After I saw it I gained even more appreciation for how accessible Blue Velvet is.)
This was my introduction to Lynch at the age of 12. The second was "Mulholland Dr." at 14. Both are absolute masterpieces and I could not imagine cinema without both films. That being said, knowing he based this film after his time living in Philadelphia, and having grown up in Pennsylvania, I can completely understand the otherworldliness of certain areas in our state. The displacement. Sounds, smells, heat, cold. A lot of it makes you feel foreign in our developed areas.
What's repulsed me most was the violence done to the "baby" at the end. Many years later, I'm still traumatized by that scene.
My second favorite David Lynch film after Mulholland Drive. Thanks for the review, I will watch it now.
I am very happy that you are reviewing this film as I enjoy your reviews. I once watched this film when I was very tired and I kept falling asleep and having to run the DVD back to watch the parts I had missed, over and over again, and I was in that half asleep state where everything is weird. It was almost as is this film was a dream I was having. It was awesome and I recommend doing that.
Eraserhead was absolutely impossible to find during the VHS era. My local rental store made you put down a $100 deposit to watch the Columbia tape. You had to see it at a theatre like the Nuart in West L.A., where it played with Suzan Pitt’s (RIP) Asparagus (1979)

I would love to see you do a review on David Lynch's "Wild at Heart" Staring Nicolas Cage, Laura Dern and Willem Dafoe. One of my favorate Lynch films.
I keep saying this, because I have never seen it mentioned elsewhere. On old timey tape machines, there were two heads; a Play Head and an Erase Head. I always thought this movie's title is named after that. But I suppose modern people might never have heard of an Erase Head.

Great video. I saw Eraserhead on cable around 1980 when I was about six. I don't understand it much better now than I did forty-two years ago. But it's intriguing. Lynch films do not explain themselves. I think they are more about the journey than the destination.

Still new to this channel but you've quickly become one of the very few film related channels I really highly value. These reviews are really wonderfully written and articulated, and full of substance. I also feel like you approach films and art with a great sense of empathy and that shines through in these videos.
This video prompted me to re-watch Eraserhead for the first time since I was about 16 (I just turned 26) and I found it far more uncomfortable now than I remember finding it then. Makes me wonder what it will reveal to me ten years from now. But I have to say I really agree with all of your takes here. It was also interesting to see this after having seen The Return, particularly Ep. 7 (spoilers for both ahead read at your own risk if you haven't seen Eraserhead or the return). Ep. 7 felt like a return and almost a merging of the worlds he built in Eraserhead and the world of Twin Peaks (I personally believe it's all part of the same world). Of course, there's the black and white aspect, but then also noticing the two photos of mushroom clouds in Henry's room is what really sealed the deal for me. Nuclear threat and the results of nuclear fall are I think a central and under-discussed element to Eraserhead and with the threat of nuclear disaster feeling perhaps similarly eminent now as to then, it was interesting to see it reappear in ep. 7 so prominently.

Oddly, Eraserhead comes across as a very disturbing movie (not the odd part), but at the same time it was a movie I used to put on before taking incredibly peaceful naps. Something about the wind and industrial sounds and the feeling that you're not in the same dimension as one that exists today, but somewhere in the deep dark folds of the Earth--like being trapped in a jar--and enjoying the solitude there.

I'm late to the party but I watched this for the first time recently. As you mentioned, the sound drew me in. It was almost like being hypnotized. Absolutely wonderful and unique film.
I just watched your review of Inland Empire and watched it again. I can't believe you haven't reviewed this one already. Awesome.
I remember sitting in complete silence the first time I watched Eraserhead, feeling things I'd never felt before. It is so hypnotic. When Lynch is at his best, I feel like nothing exists outside the dream he creates. No matter how many times I've seen Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Dr. or Fire Walk With Me (so underrated), I feel completely transfixed. Thanks for this - I never tire of hearing what people think about these films.

Great review! Good point regarding Lynch's use of industrial sounds, hums, etc. in the film. A rare manner of using sound. I believe, except for "In Heaven..." the only music in Eraserhead is old Fats Waller organ recordings. If I remember correctly, they seem barely audible, sounding like the equivalent of an old yellowed lightbulb nearly drained of light burning in a shed somewhere. It conveys feelings of such loneliness, and it's inclusion in the film is perfectly suited.
Question: Have you ever considered a review of Swedish director Roy Andersson's films? Any of his trilogy, Songs from the Second Floor (2000); You, the Living (2007); A Pigeon Sat on a Branch... (2014)? I have not yet seen his 2019 short film, however.
Thanks for this! You and I are completely in sync with ERASERHEAD, and David Lynch films in general. I want him to constantly produce new content we can all enjoy, but appreciate finding new things when rewatching existing films for the umpteenth viewing.

Excellent review as always. Eraserhead has been one of my favourite films for many years. I'm glad you talked about the sound too. Forget about action films, when I blast my speakers in my theatre, it's usually a Lynch film. Blue Velvet also has amazing sound especially in Dorthy's apartment. The ambient sound here is out of control! One thing I always felt (SPOILERS HERE) IS that Lynch really explores religion here. The only way Hennry can be with the lady in the radiator is for him to go to heaven as he does in the end. One of the most beautiful endings ever in my book.

Great insights into a movie that launches a million of them! I think you distilled Lynch's style, influences and singularity very well. I love "Eraserhead"! And I love that his next movie was the completely different - and yet similar - "Elephant Man". I remember when it came out being blown away by it being directed by the same guy, and being very proud of him! :D
I became obsessed with The Elephant Man at the tender formative age of 10. To this day I credit the film with teaching me to be an empathetic person.
You absolutely have to watch The Pink Cloud! I'd love to hear your take on it.

Lynch and Alan Splet’s sound design is truly brilliant. Like Fire Walk with Me, it really needs to be experienced in 35mm to appreciate just how remarkable it is.
Interesting to note that the production of it overlapped with Martin Brest’s (Beverly Hills Cop, Midnight Run, Gigli) AFI thesis film Hot Tomorrows (1977), and they both prominently used the same facilities at alternating times
Ah, I was born within months of this film's release. The world I was born into. Scary!!! And this is a most poetic analysis of Lynch's masterpiece. Unique career is right!
And, since you are savvy to the world of independent films ... are you ever going to review the PUSHER trilogy? I only ask in passing.
Great review. I adore Lynch. If you haven't, definitely check out his previous short film, "The Grandmother" for another Eraserhead-like trip into the mind.

Eraserhead is the definitive surrealist film. I watched it for the first (and only) time 4 years ago and it left me shaken and literally sweating. It's probably the one film that i can say scared me.
I want to like Eraserhead but I find the baby scenes to be so disturbing and unpleasant that I just can’t watch it a second time
I saw this film when I was thirteen years old. Wow! I knew surrealist art but this blew me away! It was quite frightening, I felt the claustrophobia but it was also wonderfully intriguing
I struggle a lot with Lynch even though I get why people like him. I hope this queen reviews The Neon Demon, it’s my fav movie.

I had a friend in the '80s who loved this movie and often talked about it. I can barely remember it. I admire Lynch's other works and philosophical outlook.
Great review! David Lynch is the greatest American film director of the last 30-40 years. He's made great films, a couple of masterpieces and a really bad film (Dune). Eraserhead shows an artist ready to conquer the world not with a 70's blockbuster but with a weird totally unique piece of Art. Dark, bold, ironic yet serious, funny and unpredictable describing the horrors of adulthood and parenthood. For me perosnally it made totally sense when my son was born and started to raise him. For anyone who likes daring and "out of box" movies this is a real treat.
I can't believe you haven't seen Twin Peaks in its entirety. C'mon, you have to watch it and review it. It's the best series of all time, along with Sopranos.

I've always thought it was interesting how it hits points that are simultaneously funny, and upseting. I remember the first time i watched the supper scene with the gf's parents and not knowing if i wanted to laugh, or shrink back in my chair out of discomfort lmao

Lynch's music is just as trippy as his movies
I watched it for the first time about a year ago and I thought it was great. I hear so many people say that most American movies in recent years just feel like fast food entertainment and most of it feels the same which I probably agree with. I always recommend Lynch to people, he's not for everyone but LOL, he's different and none of his movies will feel like typical Hollywood stuff.

Years ago I had showed Eraserhead at a party. I got up to get a drink. I returned and realized half the crowd left.
The girl with the cheeks makes me so uneasy lol. This film is so rich with themes and symbolism it can't be denied as a masterpiece even though Its so disturbing and unsettling
Check on TH-cam the original trailer for "Alien" and you will see how it was strongly inspired by the beginning of "Eraserhead".
The amazing thing is how all the locations of the movie were real places. Lynch was amazingly able to find the angle/shot where an everyday location showed a hidden, disquieting nature.
“Oh, you ARE sick.” Gives me shivers. I love Lynch, and I believe all of his films are simply dreams-neurotic, out of time, wish fulfillment, etc. The brilliance of Lynch is he creates these images and sounds and makes the viewer believes it’s our own dream.
Honestly it pains me that I haven't gotten hold of a copy of "Eraserhead" after all the years of its Criterion edition availability.
It still boggles my mind that in the first classes AFI ever had, five of the 20-ish students were Paul Schrader, Terrence Malick, Matthew Robbins, Stanton Kaye and David Lynch. At any school you're lucky if one genius comes out of a program and changes the world (or at least the field they're studying for).
The way you've described "Eraserhead" reminds me again of "Days of Heaven" which was released just one year later. Lynch and his classmate Malick went in two very different directions, but at the same time they both draw their work from very deep emotions. The loss of self in a strange environment is present in "Days of Heaven" to a degree that makes me wonder if Malick lost himself along the way. It would certainly explain how it took him 20 years to have another film ready for audiences ... enough time to process how he felt and what he really wanted to do next.
In contrast, Lynch seems to thrive when he faces the hard-hitting emotions. His protagonists are always losing themselves; they become very angry and very sad and end up truly fighting for their lives to mean something. It might also explain how the low box-office returns for Lynch's films never faze him ... he never wallows in any sense of failure, he's instead very quick to move on to the next project.
To put it another way: Malick's dreamscapes are very cosmic. Lynch's dreamscapes are very human.

It's definitely a bizarre & unique film, & i usually really like watching things in films that I've never seen before. To be honest tho, this movie just didn't click with me personally.

hey there, excellent review. this film is definitely a dark, disturbing, satisfying trip in the mind and into the unknown...finally saw it for first time a few months ago, only Lynch film i hadn't seen. "Blue Velvet" and first run of Twin Peaks are my favorite but every true Lynch fan can like something about all this work. it's like with each of his films...he taps into a different part of the human brain and psycho analyzes from every angle as an outsider looking in. GOOD STUFF

Which films do like? It's funny because Eraserhead is the only David Lynch film that has impressed me thus far, but I haven't seen Blue Velvet yet.
