- During this video I talk about how Foxhole has no tutorial. Players must train themselves with the help of other players. A unique experience.

Hello! We are the Northern Dragoons regiment that shows up in the video. We have been on and off the game for dozens of wars. All of our members joined the clan being very new or barely experienced with frontline combat. All of them were trained by us, since the game does indeed not give any kind of tutorial apart from giving you tools to experiment yourself. This is a game where 90% of the training of new players is, in fact, up to the players.
In our regiment we pride ourselves of teaching the new generations of warden players, but we are not the only regiment that does this. There is multiple regiments, squads and individual players that should be commended for doing this job that should be done by the game itself. And even if the game had a better tutorial: at this point We have no doubt player-led training sessions will continue to exist and they will be better than any tutorial the game can muster.
Northern Dragoons is not a big clan, training new people takes time and we can't always give everyone the attention they require. But those that we have trained and have stayed with us have been around for a long time, it is a small but tight-knit and friendly community that we have. Even though we do serious stuff pretty often and some times it requires commanding people around for coordination, in the end we are all friends and equals.
To join them their discord link is in the description of the video!
Are you guys a NA or EU clan? I'm potentially interested in joining, I tried getting into the game with a few friends but they quickly lost interest and I ended up playing by myself for maybe about 45 hours of game time over a month; playing alone is all fine and good, but I've seen a lot of cool footage and heard of how great it can be to play in groups, and since I like building games I think it'd be nice to build stuff for a group (but as a solo it's pretty hard to upkeep things yourself...I tried but after a few play sessions it got a bit much lol).
But yeah, it'd be nice to join a group that helps people out and can accomplish things more than what a solo player could achieve
@@tevarinvagabond1192 We are an NA clan and mostly play in the afternoon in PST/CT timezones. And we are also Warden only. Other than that there are no requirements to join and it is up to you if you play or not consistently. We won't remove you from the regiment if you take wars off or anything.
Home region does need a revamp, i made a suggestion series about this months ago. While other players willing to help you is great, the home region can still be re-organized to feature the newer mechanics but also just make it flow better
I would honestly like some kind of combination. Something within the game that still promotes learning from other players or creating that semi mentoring relationship. A better flow would help a lot!
For anyone interested here is that video that Bear mentioned. Go check it out!
th-cam.com/video/weaExskHnoA/w-d-xo.html
Indeed, you have to run really far for no reason to get to the firing range. Everything could just be moved slightly to make it flow nicely 🤌🏻
Couldn't agree more. I'm sure Siege is even missing out on potential development income because of this.
I think the entire point of the boot camp is for older players to use it as a place away from the chaos of the frontline to teach newer players the basics. I don't really get the whole "no tutorial = no investment" crap because I think the vast majority of us older players never had any sort of training, we just threw ourselves in and learned as we went. Anyone who doesn't naturally do that and isn't driven by curiosity probably isn't going to stay long to begin with.
Suggestion: home region gets some utility for mustering. Experienced players assembling in home region have a way to cross paths with new folks. Right now the gulf is so wide between a greenhorn and an experienced trucker, printer, builder, or war dog. We need to put the two in the same room
They just need to make a cinematic that plays for first timers explaining that it's on the job training so get in there and ask questions. Or they could use this video; whatever.
I like this idea! Something to promote that vet players should help teach new players would be really cool!
Thanks for sharing this!
@@RobertLovesGames maybe it could be like propaganda posters in buildings and on loading screens or making it a mors standout part of the culture like DRG
That would be cool!
Robert, I just got into the game about a week ago and your videos have been amazing. You do a great job of capturing the vibe of the in game foxhole community. Been loving the solo logi series!
Welcome to Foxhole! And thank you for the kind words! That really means a lot!
I'm really hoping to get back to the solo logi series one day! I miss it!
If you have any questions about Foxhole please let me know!
Thanks again for this comment really made my day! Cheers!
If the reason for the shitty tutorial is to force players to teach each other, all that is going to do is push people towards a wiki or google search, which is what I did. They put all this effort into the game but don't want to on board their players apart from a few slides. Forcing players to interact is not a solution, you want to encourage it. This is a fundamental psychological concept they cannot afford to look past if their goal to is to rely on players to keep their world going.
There is a SERIOUS problem with depending on players to help other players: The server is global, but not all players speak English.
I'm from Brazil, and I've met SEVERAL people who said they tried the game, but abandoned it because they didn't understand how it works. Brazilian regiments try to make up for this lack and almost all of them make tutorials in our language to help newcomers, but new players will not always find us (we are a small part of the game's community)
I imagine that players from other countries who don't speak English, and who don't have English teaching as widespread, experience the same problem.
Yeah thus game is VERY English French and Russian based which is sad
Yea other countries and languages are hard to come by. Would be nice if there was a central place in game where you could see where the main clans of each country or language is or how to contact them.
We need something in the tutorial that helps these players out as well.
Thanks for bringing this up! This is an important topic to keep talking about as well.
Flippy: "Fox, do a barrel roll!". Now go win the, War. That sums up the intro of Foxhole. Great vid, Rob. Keep up the teaching. It seems like every day I run into lost privates like you. 😆
LOL! Thank you so much for the kind words!
Ha you keep helping those privates as well! Cheers!
Edit: lost privates like you do. Grammar is my enemy. You are more of a Logi Col. 😎
@@yankee5858 Oh grammer and I are enemies as well ha
Heavy trucks are out on Dev Branch FYI. You may be pleased with the upgrade. It can even shift gears.
😁
@@yankee5858 Yep! I was testing them out last night! The Warden one is so fast! It's awesome!
ohh! the joys of first learning foxhole! i remember the tutorial where you use the CV, i was so scared to even go in a vehicle for fear of getting yelled at xD so i just jumped straight into the front lines and observed people. noticed which guns people were taking, which direction they went, how they spoke and all that fun stuff. I got pulled into a tank crew as a gunner after 5 minutes of standing around dumbfounded (guess they noticed me). their regiment taught me all the basics and kept me at ease (as i get very stressed at the slightest mess up) after we took out a tank by sneaking behind them, 3 tanks in the zone gathered around, planned and all condemned me at the same time, promoting me to a private, clapping and congratulating me. I had the biggest smile for the rest of the night.
Man, i'm realizing how lucky i was to be around those type of people and not the toxic ones. The community really does make this game. after that i try to pay it forward by helping anyone else in game. I won't be able to do what those guys did for me, but hopefully it made their starts a little less intimidating.
Really enjoy your videos Robert :) your videos always make me jump back in game and remember these fun in-game experiences
That's a really good idea to jump to the front and just watch people ha. I was basically a battle looter for like the first 3 hours. I hated wasting anything that was dropped ha.
That's awesome that a tank crew picked you up! And yea it does come to luck sometimes if you are around cool people in game or the toxic ones. I think the nice people in this game overshadow the toxic ones most of the time at least.
Good on you for trying to pay it forward!
And thanks for the kind words! Really appreciate that! If you see me on the battlefield make sure to say hi!
Cheers!
I really like the idea of the game teaching you very basic things and then having a community of players that will teach newbies. Very much like EvE Uni in Eve Online.
I like it as well! Brings us all closer.
I'm new to Foxhole but the amount of people who are helpful to me with all my questions is surprising I enjoy the community very much
It's honestly one of the best things about Foxhole and is what makes me stick around I think. It's just so easy to start talking to people and start working together on random projects or missions.
Thanks for sharing your experience! Cheers!
They will still exist even if the tutorial was better. That's a flaw in the videos point of tutorial improvement negative consequence.
When you first log in, the first thing you should see should be a map showing where the tutorials are located and how to use chat for others to help you.
I'm only about 2 wars in and mostly learned how to play watching your solo logi series.
That's awesome to know! Thanks for sharing that.
I hope to get back to my solo logi series some day. Miss making those videos.
I know you are 2 wars in already now but if you ever have any questions about Foxhole stuff let me know!
Yes this game has a tutorial, just ask in chat: "where’s the next Stalingrad?" And go where every they say it is
lol! Hopefully there is no que!
@@RobertLovesGames No que? Oh there is always one. But you can get on that base a hundred meters or so behind under non-stop bombardment and overrun by crazy bayonet dudes, my first time experience. I even managed to get some kills before base was killed by a tank.
We need 3 things:
A way to teach new players more efficiently, even if they have to hold their hand for the basics.
A way to have magic boxes in the home region to try vehicles and other complex parts easily and more casual.
A pvp arena in the home region, either by allowing players to 1v1 each other or as some suggested before a no mans land in between the home region for wardens and colonials that allows players to fight each other in a casual environment and familiarize better with the combat system
This would all be great! I'm for it!
The only thing I would push again is like a big open area with magic boxes that is like dev branch. I think you would get a group of people that would never leave and just want to play the "open sandbox" version of Foxhole all the time. If devbranch was constantly open I guarantee you there would be group that would never leave ha
Thanks for your thoughts on this! Appreciate it!
So after having been bombarded by your videos and other foxhole videos by the youtube algorithm I decided to finally give Foxhole a proper chance and War 107 was my first proper war. Sadly the friends I originally tried to try the game with way back 2 years ago had moved on, so I went in as a solo player and my social anxiety makes it hard for me to initiate interactions in games, so I didn't even think to ask other players for help. The Home Island tutorial was helpful for the most basic of things but most of what I learned came from videos, eavesdropping on someone giving an explanation to another new player, and just watching other people. The only stuff I'm completely unsure about still are the things that seem to require multiple people to do (artillery, tanks, etc.) but hopefully as I get more comfortable in the game I'll start to open up more and maybe find a regiment. But even with all that, I've had a blast playing it and while I'm taking a small break am looking forward to the next war.
LOL! Thanks TH-cam? ha
Glad to hear that you have had a blast and hope I can see you on the next war!
If you are on the Warden side for update war maybe we can do some tanking or arty together and I can show you what I know at least! I have my discord in the description if you want to join that. Easiest way to get a hold of me when I'm in the game.
Thanks again for sharing your experience! Really appreciate it!
those blue tanks made me very happy 2:51
They are quite beautiful ha
Let my girlfriend play Foxhole a week or 2 ago. She has seen me play this a lot, mind you, and she mainly played FF14. So she's not stupid when it comes to games.
But it took her a while to get into the logic of how the spawn island was set up. Where to start the next point. After a while she just got annoyed and asked "lets just spawn on the front together and figure it out there...?". Which we did and was much more enjoyable. Plus the practical learning experience was much better than just grabbing something out of a box to shoot some random wall. Not even talking about the atrocious refinery, building and vehicle part of that spawn island...
Every game has quit moments, where new players quit. Some worse than others. And sure, foxhole is a game where you might expect some level of pro active thought from a player. But holy moly man this game is just 1 big quit moment. No wonder it only has a few thousand people playing it.. Which is very very sad. Because there really isn't much out there like this game.
Thanks for sharing your girlfriends experience learning Foxhole! That is really good to know. And yea always seems like a lot of people just give up on the tutorial and just want to spawn in the front and get going. Which tells me the tutorial needs to flow better and be shorter. Quick and to the point.
And you are right. I honestly quit FF14 because I didn't feel like I was in the story enough. Gave it like 10 hours and just couldn't get into it.
There is a certain threshold that you need to get past to see how awesome Foxhole can be. And unfortunately if you bump into the wrong people when you first start Foxhole that also might make you think poorly about the game.
Again thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts on this! Appreciate it!
@@RobertLovesGamesCouldn’t agree more!
Long ago when I just started Foxhole on shard 2, I started my own logi regi. Just wanted to share my experiences. Got some new players every day and had a lot of fun sharing the little knowledge I had.
Years ago when I played Eve online I was in this corporation called ‘Eve University’. It’s a bunch of veteran players teaching new players. Since Eve lacks good tutorials as well. It was a really fun experience. Maybe something for you content creators to set up and reach out with? ^^
Also: yes I get that about FF14. Definitely not for everyone :p I play since 2014 though, but… shhh 🤫 I skipped so much story. I just like the battles and raids :D hihi
That’s awesome you started a logi reg! And I’ve heard of Eve University I’m pretty sure! That’s awesome!
Ha your secret is safe with me!
The experiences had by talking to others in this game feel like the 'glory days' of older mmos. Like, true story - I was around Talonsfort and heard someone ask for a driver for their mortar half track. Took the guy up on his offer, drove to the front - then we needed a spotter, so I started spotting. With his aim and my spotting we put the hurt on the trenches and had a great time for ~3 hours.
Love it when things like that happen in this game, it reminds me of when a guy in a bone wagon needed a gunner and I joined in we then flanked the enemy assault group of mostly tanks and made them panic like no tomorrow eventually a tanket smashed up against us to keep us from getting away and the 64mm push gun behind us fired but the tanket moved in its way at the last second and the push gun destroyed it instead of us then we drove away and I fired one last shot and decrewed that same push gun... it was beautiful.
That's awesome! I love random pick up groups like that in Foxhole! They seem so organic and real and they are just so memorable as well.
Seriously one of the things I love about Foxhole. Thanks for sharing this!
when i started i was so lost in the home region, a guy saw me running around and asked me if i need help, i told him "yes please, im traped here and i dont know where to go" and he was my teacher in the ingame tutorial, we did all of it, and then he told me where to spawn i played with me for like an hour in the front teaching me more things
That's amazing! This built in mentoring culture is so great honestly. I think the devs need to lean into it and add signs promoting it in home region.
Thanks for sharing this!
thanks to you for posting this video, now that i saw your nick in the dev branch, did you asked the same thing at the end of the ward on the warden side? i think i saw you but i was about to log off @@RobertLovesGames
@@pancho5304 Yea I did try during the end of the war but it was right at the end of the war so I think everyone was busy trying to wrap it up. Or they thought I was trolling ha
then yup, i saw you, i really wanted to help and try to teach a new player, but i had to leave D: i wrote the message "where are you on the map, so i can go and help you" and then i saw the time and was like "srry dude, i cant right now, i hope someone else reads you and helps you"@@RobertLovesGames
Ha no worries! Happens to me as well!
Foxhole teaches us the true war experience where without cooperation and mutual help you will not last long. Experienced players tend to feel compassion to newbies because they themselves were wandering aimlessly at the past digging trenches and shipping crates inside the Ironship without the containers...
I love this! Thanks for sharing that!
For a game that benefits from community education, the game fights against teachers Like an American Public School.
Teachers get no help. It's so hard to educate when every game task takes forever to accomplish, is expensive, and can hurt the team as a whole.
Teaching a player to build is hard when building hurts maintaince supply costs. Using home region is impossible as it's cluttered and there is multiple home regions with no ability to all select and join the same one.
No ability to spar, to have mock battles between allies means mostly learning from words alone. Not ideal for teaching expensive things that require coordination like tanks.
Ability to forgive friendly damage would be so helpful. Even just restricted to home region so players practice against each other without getting weapons restricted.
Magic Tools to speed up building in home region would help teaching move at a reasonable pace.
In our regiment we have to do things like set up used shipping containers as targets because you cant get restricted from killing them.
Obscure things like that have to be done instead of useing home region.
Yea overall the tutorial needs a face lift and some things changed to make it easier and quicker to learn the basics. Good point about teaching building. Right now teaching building in devbranch would be the best time honestly but we don't always have this up.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this! Appreciate it!
I remember when I started playing in war 88 on one day me and 2 friends blasted the game for 8h with no stop, we were warden and played in The Spine in Th deadlands, I wanted do build a bunker and a trench line, so I did, a shovel in hand went out. Got turned into Swiss cheese. The front was just 200m of the town hall and I went north of the road there and we 3 started digging, with our advanced special needs tactic we out flank digged the enemy and dug a trench just behind the treelike of the road, invisible to the enemy’s south, we mounted 3 ratcatchers and started blasting
That is an awesome story! Thanks for sharing that! Everyone always hates how new players dig trenches but we really need to get past that hateful meme and just let players learn or help teach them.
Thanks again for sharing that fun story!
I think a better tutorial explaining basic mechanics and a system with which people can easily get guidance is a good way to go. You gave a good example of people willing to teach new players but you also had something that new players don't, knowledge about the game mechanics, how the chat works, how the VC works and how the stockpile / inventory system works which can be overwhelming to new players
Yea the tutorial needs to flow better. If someone does try to teach you everything at once it can also be overwhelming as well. There is a lot to Foxhole.
Thanks for your input on this! Cheers!
I am pretty confident that the bad tutorial combined with the incredibly positive experience of being guided by a knowledgeable player is singlehandedly the most important reason for me having stuck to the game and having come to embrace the hard grind that Logi necessitates. A salute to FMAT!
Thanks for sharing that! And huge salute to FMAT! Some of the best Foxhole gamers I have played with so far!
The tutorial is all the friend we made along the way :V
No, really, the friends you made in the way teach you all XD
LOL!
This video definitely describes my first time playing this game. I spawned at some random place because I like learning from actually playing and the second I spawned I got offered to get into a tank. From there I squaded up with them and they just taught me basically everything. That experience definitely made the gameplay really fun and now I have 2k hours on the game.
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing that story. Always love to hear about these kind of interactions in Foxhole.
Thanks again!
Loved the video, and I personally not having played too much enjoyed the learning curve in the game, I had lots of help by asking in chat how things worked, and just figured things out slowly as I tried, one thing I feel is a big lack in the foxhole community is that on youtube there isnt really any videos that just show gameplay, everything is either very short, or cut up, so no one can just sit down watch a "lets play" of the game and see how someone play the game from start of a war to the end, and I feel that really is a shame. At least I havent found anything for a long time
Thanks for the kind words!
Yea the "lets play" play is more on Twitch. My closest series is my Solo Logi series where I have 19 episode that are only semi cut up but show my though process throughout a war on what I choose to do as a solo logi player.
Appreciate your thoughts on this! Cheers!
@@RobertLovesGames I'll check it out, I do love foxhole as a game just don't have time to play or watch streams
@@galdorofnihelm6798 ahhh gotcha. Does take little bit of time to get into sometimes so I get it.
it apparently been a while the towing system was suggested by the community to dev to be a feature now, and here it is in the naval update
but it's getting critical needed to entirely rework the tutorial to be complete and more easy access for new foxhole players.
maybe it is also intentional by the devs to let only basic tutorials so experimented and veteran players can coach them, adding the formations introduced by specific clans and their way to teach.
If the second option, then devs must rework training access so the player couldn't avoid the basics.
I wouldn't mind if it was intentional that they kept it basic. If they do ever change the tutorial I still want them to try to keep the mentoring culture alive. I love that vet players teach new players.
Appreciate your thoughts on this!
@@RobertLovesGames It would be much easier if all that stuff wasnt outside 5 minutes of running apart. And if text on tablets was being shown above them like it usually does outside of spawn base.
One of the hardest thing for me was how to show my message above my head. There is no youtube tutorial for that.
You can find answers for most of your foxhole questions using google. The foxhole wiki and youtube is great.
I miss a good tutorial about tanks. How to identify the enemy tank variant, and what is the best counter tank or tactics against it.
One tip: If you are playing solo and have a spare monitors (or just a phone) have a foxhole twitch stream open. You will never feel alone, and can learn a lot.
Like to talk in local chat? That took me a while as well. And I agree Freerk puts out some really good guides on TH-cam!
I normally have a stream up while I'm doing logi! Very chill and relaxing time honestly.
Thank you soo much for this i made a post on the main foxhole page a year ago complaining that i keep running into new players that are 100% clueless on what to do! The tutorial isnt forced or even something they encourage you to do! i really hope they put a tutorial you have to go thru as a new player to get to be able to deploy. They could go they exact opposite route and ask the community to make tutorials and they pick their favorite and make the video pop up for new players.
Something short and basic would be nice. I like the idea of taking content creators tutorials and putting them in game. That would be really cool! Get I Saw A Bear or Freerk to do them!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this! And fighting the good fight to hopefully see some changes with tutorial at some point.
Back when DayZ was still an Arma 2 mod, there was no tutorial. Most people learned via trial and error, or by watching videos. A group I was in, the Trusted Medics of the Wasteland, provided medical assistance to players. We also had a new player course on a private server, where we walked players through how things work, what to be careful of, and when to run.
I played DayZ in the Arma 2 mod. You can actually go to my oldest videos on my TH-cam channel and still find those cringe videos lol.
Spoilers it was not the highlight of my gaming career as I took down a lot of innocent people ha
Well it's hard to disagree when you put it this way.
I remember when I started playing in war 80, I really wanted to do some logi (like all the videos I've seen). But I didn't have a flatbed and I was adamant I needed one to be more efficient. So I proceeded to start asking people near Ogmaran's seaport if anyone had a spare flatbed, I was willing to work for it. I was approached by Magnus from RIS, he offered me a free flatbed but I insisted I should work for it, so he told me to get in the passenger seat of his flatbed, he asked if I was a new player and proceeded to teach me all there was to know about logi in the following months.
That's such an awesome story! Thanks for sharing that!
I went on the official Foxhole Discord Server before I even selected a Faction or Shard. This was in December 2022 when Charly Shard was a thing.
There I asked for advice, some French guy contacted me via DMs and pretended to be an official Siege Camp employee for teaching new players. I really quickly figured out that he was lying, but anything else he was really helpful. He guided me to the scrap fiel, refinery, factory in Therizo and then I personally delivered Rifles, Shirts and Bullets to the front and then we used the very rifles I brought.
What a wholesome first day experience.
lol they pretended to be an official siege camp employee to teach new players?!?! What kind of role play is that ha
Good on that person for helping you learn. They must have been joking about the employee thing.
Awesome memory! Thanks for sharing!
They do have a warning when you enter a “water region” (at least in devbranch) so that new players don’t get confused
Oh really? I don't think I've seen that pop up. Did they just add that?
@@RobertLovesGames I think it was in the dev branch, too
@@BlockyO ahhh gotcha. Thanks for sharing that!
I enjoy being able to teach new players it was a big component when we started the 27th was to be able to teach new people. I try and teach our new members atleast once a weekend in one subject.

Thanks for sharing your experience!
Another game where people are nice to each others and the vets help the newbies without question ? Oh yes there is indeed another one.
It's a game about rocks and stones and i am sure people will be delighted to talk about it more.
You are the 2nd person to mention that game! I have yet to play it! Sounds like I need to get on the next sale!
@@RobertLovesGames It is a really good game. There are less "old vets" than before which is normal given the age of the game and player fatigue but quite a number of "fresh vets" have taken the torch since then so you will be able to find helpfull people still.
@@mathieugirod6485 That's awesome! Do they mainly help through discord channels?
"Personally / in my opinion", with the current state of the deployment island , when new players join they should be directed / teleported straight to the frontlines, frontlines with active battle currently happening. Don't even bother exposing them to the tutorial part.
Foxhole is known for its massive online PVP, coordination with other player. so naturally when people bought foxhole, the first thing that comes to their mind is they want to experience large scale pvp (thats what happened with me anyways).
And i feel like without tutorial, new player will still understand the basic of foxhole, wasd for movement and you shoot stuff simple :D, and then you kinda start to backtrack from there, you start asking question how do you make this gun?, how is this structure build?, how can i build vehicle? stuff like that.
Im writing this because my first hour of foxhole is "personally" im wasting time doing tutorial that, at that time i dont need to know how industry work, i just want to grab a gun and shoot some bluberries :D
Dont know though, thats my experience anyway, im sure siege camp have a lot of data and experience when designing stuff like that, keep it up devman o7
I kinda wish that the home region also had certain processes sped up. I do a lot of building and I feel bad when someone comes up to me and asks to learn, because it takes a lot of space and time to experiment with combinations and show them what can work and stuff. It would be cool if home region had like a sub region or something with infinite building materials and reduced building time. Not only would it be a lot cooler to show how building works there but then more experienced players can test designs and layout orders to see if they work in game.
Also even if they made a whole new tutorial I don't think mentoring will go away. If they let older players line up in front I can totally see tour-guide like roles showing up. Heck I have already seen a few people try doing that for new players and its really cool.
I vaguely remember attempting the tutorial, gave up near instantly and figured out how to spawn in. After hundreds of hours of just fighting as infantry and figuring things out, started looking into logi so i could try tanks and found it pretty intuitive. I kind of like the lack of tutorial - you're never forced into any play style or role, you just go where your curiosity sends you. I'm old and used to games not having forced tutorials, and the premise of the game is good enough to make you want to learn how it works.
The meat grinder that is the front line is tutorial enough.
Ha this is how I feel as well. I like that you are just sort of thrown in and have to figure out what you need to do. I know a lot of players now days don't really like that and sometimes need their hands held a bit more.
Thanks for sharing your experience with the tutorial and how you learned the game! Appreciate it!
TLDR: If the game isn't going to help you any more than the current tutorial implementations it needs to at least teach you how to ask others for help.
I played roughly 6-8 hours total in two "wars" prior to checking the game out for the third time when the naval announcement appeared on Steam, so for all intents and purposes I'd consider myself pretty new. My first experience was doing the various tutorials on the home island because I already had an idea of how to navigate using a map, which isn't something you can expect every new player to have. I was messing around at the trench building area when another actually new player came up and started talking to me in voice chat. He had to tell me how to respond because I wasn't expecting to be talking to anyone and I hadn't checked the controls for talking, and it's the very last thing in the tutorial popup which some players might just skip through or not absorb the knowledge written on the card.
So, if we're going to accept that the tutorial in Foxhole is going to be bad on purpose it still could use some improvements. Namely, the tutorial should teach you how to communicate, both in voice and with text chat. It should probably also explain what all the chat channels are for and how to cycle through them, and how to private message someone or respond to a private message. Your experience going undercover is nice and heartwarming, but what if a new player doesn't understand how the chat functions work, or if they accidentally get themselves stuck talking in local chat where not many people might be able to see them asking questions? What if they accidentally click on one of the chat tabs and don't realize they've filtered out the other chats?
It would be really awesome if there was a small sign close to where you spawn that told you to ask for help from other players. Would reinforce that mentoring culture.
I like the idea that they should focus on teaching players how to communicate first. Someone else brought up the idea that they should have a specific mentoring or help chat to ask questions.
Unfortunately those players that can't figure out the chat or voice might be stuck wondering around for while :/ unless someone can find them and help them. Which is why the tutorial needs a bit of an update.
Appreciate your sharing your thoughts and ideas with this! Thank you!
I got lucky when I started and found a fellow Serbian in the home region. He took me thru everything and thought me how to play every part of the game. Still very thankful to that man! Now I am a 2LT teaching newer players and getting friends into the cult of foxhole. Nice video rob!
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing that story!
And good on you for teaching new players in Foxhole as well and getting new people to join!
Cheers!
Helping a new guy is one of my favorite things to do foxhole... great video as always!
Seriously! If I have the time when I am on I will always choose to teach a new player and show them the ropes. My personal Rob logi tutorial is always like 30 minutes to an hour long ha
And thanks for the kind words! Cheers!
I found out about this game just a couple hours ago, and oh my god those are some really wholesome interactions! This game definitely going into my wishlist.
Nice! 95% of the Foxhole community is amazing and super positive. And like any game you have 5% that try and ruin it for everyone else ha. Feel free to DM me on discord if you have any questions before you get the game or if you end up getting the game and need help learning anything!
Theres a game called space station 13 where if you need help you can ask a question in the mentor chat, I think an official system like that with a more accessible tutorial would work best for new players, because learning from someone else helps a lot. Im actually training a few of my friends who got the game this weekend, since if you dont know how to fight it can get frustrating
Never heard of that game! I will have to check it out!
Thanks for sharing this! Cheers!
Do you want another fucking Sseth tide?!!! Do not reveal the damn spessman game!
This reminds me of the times I've helped people learn the game have a blast and get into mischief with and then send them on there way
I think fondly on those memories and good persons that have been sent out to the game
That's awesome! Those are some of the best moments in Foxhole honestly.
Good on you for helping new players learn the game! Cheers!
I just wanted to thank you making videos for Foxhole. Your videos really show what the game is capable of.
Thank you! That really means a lot!
Early years of Rust used be friendly like this with people taking the time to explain and teach new players
That's awesome! I've watched a lot of Rust but never played. It seems like a game that could do that really well.
Thanks for sharing this! Cheers!
Yes two games right off the bat Eve Online and Wurm online corps and groups teach each other the game.
It may very well be indicative of the average impatient gamer as well. The need for the Dopamine kick of combat and killing something or FOMO also leads to this. As a gamer that has been around longer then half the game pop has been alive ( least what the people in the game tell me) I can attest to having this condition at times.
I can say I spent 2 hours doing that tutorial going through it slowly and checking everything in it.
So a lot of things I did learn in the game were great for combat and shooting and climbing but there was Nothing about building or facilities or msups or product creation in game which is sad.
I have actually set up my own regiment I will be launching next war called Hammer Time with an attitude to help new people in logistics and facilities. Last war was my first and I think I did ok or at least was told I did .
I do agree though that there should be signs like 1-10 that say do these tutorial steps first in this order and have a marker system ( journal) shows what they have and have not done.
Maybe the first time you do something you get a commends so you can reward people with upvotes? Complete all 10 tutorial steps get a bonus 10. ( commends are not even talked about at all i found out in game)
Below is a great video series by Freek about the game some are out of date but overall I learned a TON ( metric or standard :P ) of stuff.
www.youtube.com/@FreerkHoltes
I also think there should be a recruiting board for people that want to do logistics ( regiments can post on the board) or front line combat ( again regiments can post add on board)
Perhaps a short tutorial with an ai officer npc that covers things in the order of:
basic controls > accessing equipping items > weapon handling > vehicle handling (probably an armored car)
Everything else is best learned from experienced players. Trying to jam every important aspect of the game into a tutorial would result in a very long and boring tutorial that would overwhelm and push away new players.
I can get behind this. I would like the mentoring culture to still stay even if they revamp the tutorial some day. I would even actually prefer they lean into the mentoring culture more.
Thanks for your thoughts and ideas on this!
@@RobertLovesGames I agree that the player based mentoring is a core part of the community; it’s just that 50-60% of the time the things I listed are learned when it’s not a good time to take risks as new players tend to pick frontline spawns. The vehicle part is something I personally would like implemented; driving or shooting in a tank is a nightmare to learn and teach while under fire.
That’s true! Good point.
Wholesome. This is why Foxhole is great. And many vets will drop what they're doing and teach you anything if you give us a chance and ask.
Also, I loved seeing you pretend to be a logistics noob. It's hilarious watching you be the perfect new player. Those little mistakes like running from the driver's seat to the passenger is very good as it is something I see every new player do. Really sells it.
It was so wholesome! Seriously so many vets love to help new players which is so great.
And I had fun being under cover as well! I had to keep reminding myself to pretend like I don't know anything ha.
And yea I liked that driver seat one as well. I was actually hoping he would notice to teach me the hot key ha.
I did a few more things like that but they didn't make the cut in the video. I should have put some bloopers at the end or something ha. Next time.
Thanks for your comments on this! Appreciate it!
I always find random no ranks running around in the wild lol, it’s sad because they have no idea where the front line is and some almost got off the game because they didn’t realize they could set their spawns at a frontline bunker base. I will say it’s one of my favorite things to do in the game, is talk to new players about simple things and helping them immerse themselves into the world of Foxhole.
Same! Any time I see low rank or no rank I always ask if they are doing alright or if they need help with anything.
Keep up the good work looking after the low/no ranks!
And thanks for sharing your experience with this!
Its crazy how from a developers stance you have your players teaching new players on how to play your game
I bet that is crazy ha. Honestly I love it. I wish there were more prompts in the home region to promote this mentoring culture more.
Space Station 13 is similar in not having a tutorial, but has an advantage in that you choose a job when you join each round and mostly you already have a basic sense of what you'll be doing. The challenge is just that you arrive on a space shuttle into a giant space station where you don't really know where your department is (though some stations have maps which can be helpful). But if you ask for help in OOC or even over the radio (as long as it's in character "where's the janitor closet ion this station") then people will often help you.
In my opinion as players we shouldn’t put all the expectations on the devs to create tutorial that teaches new players everything they need to know, BUT we shouldn’t be expected to teach new players everything. the dev team absolutely needs to revamp home island and it will be up to the players to teach the newbies how to run this kind of facility, what vehicles are what logi to bring the front, and how to build meta-defenses and not give the enemy trenches.
We need a healthy balance between the two. Make the home island flow better and be quick and simple but also promote mentoring.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this! Appreciate it!
A couple wars back when they re-enabled cross faction voice chat, I ran across a newbie warden while I was playing colonial after downing them. Asked them if they knew what they were doing. They said not really. I went and chased down WO2 warden told them to teach them the ways. It really was quite a fun experience to shout at the enemy to stop, tell them to teach a newbie and have them pick up their body, before the three of us separated. Then again. It's about the only thing you can do when you find a newbie on the other side :V. It might take a while for someone to help you. But switching regions can definitely help if world chat isn't being helpful or just chasing someone and shouting in proxy chat for a little help. Having a mic is immensely useful in this situation, and so is speaking English.
Ha! that is probably one of the best stories I've read so far! And yes to get a lot of help or to get it easily having a mic and speaking english is for sure easier. I've helped a few players who could only type but it is a longer process for sure.
Thanks for sharing that cool story! Appreciate it!
The clan you met with felt so wholesome. Gives me faith in humanity. Once i get a decent pc and Internet. Im def gonna get foxhole.
They are awesome! Been chatting with them most of today a well!
Once you get Foxhole let me know and I'll help you learn or find someone to help you learn as well!
@@RobertLovesGames definitely will (if I remember that is) 👍
Ha!
I haven't played in quite some time, but that was exactly my experience in the beginning.
I spent quite a lot of time running around not knowing what to do. All it took was one message in chat, some clan took me in and taught me the whole game in a few days.
That's awesome someone found you ha! Some players end up running around and no one messages them or talks to them because they don't notice and then that player quits sometimes.
Thanks for sharing your experience! Appreciate it!
would be cool to see a Cinema in the Home region where you can watch short "documentaries" on the various aspects of war, in the style of fallout propaganda videos
That would be awesome! I would love something like that. Videos would go long way in teaching new players different aspects if they were in game some how.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this!
I used to(on break right now) go around during both Resistance phase and large update wars and host a "boot camp", basically bring a bunch of new/returning players to an area and go over the basics up to tanks. This way players know how to do just about all the basic stuff, when I return to the game my "boot camp" shall return
That's awesome! A "boot camp" is essentially what I got thrown into when I first started ha.
Looking forward to the return of the boot camp! Thanks for being willing to teach new players!
And thanks for sharing this! Cheers!
@@RobertLovesGames thanks for the videos, they are lovely and interesting. Watching these has helped me get back into Foxhole mentally as well as think of new strategies and tactics for Frontline use
That’s great to hear! That made my day! Thank you!
started with bridge battles, moved over to flatbed logi and im around 60 hours now. tried learning how to produce petrol fuel during the resistance phase, but a colonial clan named BBB blew up my truck and shot at me because i was on their base at oil field
oof I hate that. That's especially bad because it's in resistance phase.
Sorry that happened to you :/
@@RobertLovesGames found a public facility and figured it out, i also stocked the generator with fuel and parked a full truck next to it for our colonial brethren to utilize
EVE Online for 15+ years had no tutorial and has probably one of the steepest learning curve of almost any game I’ve ever seen. That said other players is the only way to learn and there was a dedicated “Rookie chat channel” that helped me a ton my first weeks in
Which is probably why I only played the trial version and then quit after it. I mined some for bit then tried to venture how and get destroyed right away.
I think Foxhole could use a sort of "help" channel. It has million other chat channels might as well add just one more help one ha
Thanks for your thoughts on this! Appreciate it!
There's a reason my regi (82dk) has a 3-part training as part of our induction, partly to show people how we do things but mainly to get every new player up to speed when there are so many esoteric mechanics.
That's awesome they have a 3-part training organized! I will have to come walk through that some time and see how it goes. One issue I could see is overwhelming players with to much a first. But maybe they know how to prevent that.
Thanks for letting me know about that! I'll have to check it out!
As someone who's been there since the free download in the summer of 2016, I have always wanted them to make a proper ingame tutorial but knew that was a long time coming. I am very happy that in all this time even though just like any other game out there are griefers and the general ass hat, the community at large has always been open to helping those who ask. It's one of the highlights for me, though at some point they really should figure out a way besides relying too heavily on the content creators. Outside sources are nice but some folks will see that as a hassel and bounce off which is a shame.
Thanks for sharing your opinion on this! Having a vet opinion like yours is really helpful!
Star Citizen doesn't have a good tutorial and does have a community practice of being really open to teaching new people. I think it's for the same reason, where stuff changes so fast that tutorial work often becomes outdated really quickly.
Also many games rely on their community to teach outside of game too, on TH-cam for example. Riot is a good example, their tutorials are meh but the games are so deep and the metas ever changing, so they let people learn on TH-cam and twitch.
Still there are some things foxhole devs could do to make the experience a bit smoother for new people that isn't a full blown tutorial. Eg. Making that first spawn decision easier to find and do, or giving new players missions in game on different tracks like logi, building, and infantry (eg. Deliver 100 scrap to a refinery, build a watchtower, equip and reload a primary weapon). Then they'd have a goal to ask about. One huge advantage here for your experiment was knowing that logi was a thing, and being able to ask "can you show me logi stuff". New players won't know that distinction
That makes sense about the game changing so quickly the tutorial would become out of date really fast as well and hard to keep up with. I didn't know that about Star Citizen though! That's really cool to hear!
That makes me think about Teamfight Tactics. I definitely learn way more from other players on Twitch and TH-cam than I do through the game. Good point!
I like your ideas to make their first initial time in game a little easier. The tutorial needs a slight change just to make sure players don't get lost.
I see it to many times where players just gave up because they were not given a clear objective.
Appreciate your thoughts and ideas on this!
i got foxhole on christmas in 2020 and the first thing i saw was someone taking new player to training (like a drill sergeant) when he explains everythings i should know before going to the front. It was one of the best thing i experienced in the game (and the first thing i did to)
That's awesome! And a similar experience that I had as well when I went to the front. A guy was gathering up all the new people spawning in and teaching them. Wish I would have recorded that ha.
Thanks for sharing your experience!
Team Fortress 2 also has a shit tutorial by which I mean it's physically broken. Most of the stuff I learned first starting out was talking to people with in game voice chat and text chat, as well as youtube videos. I enjoyed learning from the community so much that it became my preferred way to learn a new game. I just got foxhole yesterday and I'm excited to test it out. Thank you for the tutorials and videos :)
I never knew that about TF2! That's awesome that you can learn from the community.
And that's awesome to hear! Hope you are enjoying it! Feel free to join my discord in the description and ask any questions there if you need help with anything!
Thanks for the kind words and see you out there!
Foxhole could use a mentor system, with a seperate (faction wide) chat for new players and those willing to help them. Whenever a new player spawns on the home island for the first time, an automated message could be sent to that chat.
That would be awesome! I also like the idea of there maybe being a specific chat where you can ask questions and get help.
I like this idea! Thanks for sharing it! Cheers!
They did that in tf2 and CSGO for awhile. you could ask for a "coach" and someone would spectate you and they could ping in your game.
@@Harp2033 oh wow that is really cool! I didn't know that
I think its great that the lack of a tutorial forces players to teach other new players how to play but it also leads into other issues like with new and inexperienced players doing things that harm their own faction and getting punished and yelled at for doing it when they didn't know any better.
Agreed I love the mentoring culture we have. But your right it's a double edged sword.
I've noticed with some new players one thing that determines if they keep playing or not is who they run into in game. If they run into helpful people they are more likely to stay if they run into a salty vet they are more likely to give up on the game.
We need to make those salty vets less salty towards new players lol
Thanks for your thoughts on this!
I love this game because it has the most friendly community that I’ve ever seen
Same! 99% of the people I have met in this game have been awesome!
Tbh i think the basic shooting and like some hints should be in an easy tutorial but other stuff shouldn't
I'm for this. It really should start newer players in the tutorial area.
Thanks for your input on this! Cheers!
This is exactly how I learned the game.
Just had a random funny video come across my dash and was like "What game is this?"
It was on sale for $20 or something during War 82.
I logged in and was like "I just want to shoot stuff." And skipped the tutorial entirely.
I spawned in and asked Local Chat "What equipment should I take?" And suddenly I was in a party hunting Wardens and learning everything. How to dig, how to build defenses, how to throw a grenade, how to deposit my starter kit, by the end of the day I was gunning from a tank turret.
Now around ~300hrs I have learned just about everything and done everything in the game for hours. Partisan, logi runs, trench warfare, artillery, base building, building and driving tanks, everything. And it was the people around me who helped. So I help others when I can. I mostly like sitting in a trench holding the line and taking bridges but I'm a total casual. 😊
Thanks for sharing your experience! That's awesome that a group picked you up to go hunt wardens!
Glad to hear you pay it forward and help others as well!
Thanks again for sharing this! Cheers!
One of the problems I've noticed is that the youtube tutorials that DO exist out there, teach a lot about starting facilities, and everyone jumps into that. Those tutorials make almost no mention of maintenance and msupp cost, so those facilities are quickly abandoned and left to decay.
Freerk made an msupp cost video not to long ago. Basically stating how much work it's to keep a facility up and running. It is a hard subject to talk about because it depends on the hex and depends on how many other clans that work are building in that hex.
Honestly I'm probably going to make a video soon on all of that.
Thanks for your thoughts on this though! Appreciate it!
I remember in the past people were training me when i started the game, it was lovely and awesome.
That’s great! Thanks for sharing that!
Love the Master Chief helmet!
thanks@@RobertLovesGames
I have joined foxhole recently and oh my goodness it has to be the best game community I’ve seen everyone is very polite especially logi
Right?!? I love it. I’m normally just chilling in back hexes with logi bros
Your videos are always great when you flip them around haha like complaining about the tutorial and then explaining how a bad tutorial is a good thing for comms, happy to see your sub count growing!
Thank you so much for the kind words! This honestly made my day and I wouldn’t even care if the video bombed now.
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers!
i learned how to play becuase i watched helping hans and creepy banana in 2021, now im a Brig with 4300 hours and NOW i have that responsibility of helping new players. Its a very wholesome moment when im doing my logi and i see a new player trying to gather comps with a regular hammer or when they are at a salvage field also using a small hammer where theres sledgehammers and harvesters right next to them, helping them learn and become more efficient, stuff like that
I've learned a lot from watching KronusWinter. Watching streamers helps a lot especially when they answer questions as well.
Congrats on Brig and 4300 hours! And great work helping new players as well!
I love helping new players and when I have time I would always rather choose doing that then some other task I was going to do.
Thanks for sharing your experience!
It should be 100% game responsibility to teach newbies. DEV's are super lucky they managed to atract such dedicated community ready to teach everyone around.
Semi agree. I think that is one of the reasons a lot of people love Foxhole and stick with Foxhole. Is they had someone teach them how to play and it made them feel more connected to the game.
But I agree the devs should have ways to teach the players and it shouldn't rely solely on the players. Because sometimes new players don't meet those nice players right away and quit the game.
Thanks for your input on this!
I started playing and a guy literally spent about 8 hours showing me how to play, we then ended up showing others and created a little regiment, still play with some of the guys now
That's amazing! I had a similar situation happen to me as well. Was probably only about 2-3 hours but still they used like their whole game session to teach me which was awesome.
Thanks for sharing your experience!
The tutorial isn't too bad, in my opinion. I actually learned a lot from it, but I think the fact that you need to read a lot of signs puts people off. Especially nowadays. It helped of course that I was a curious new player that googled a lot when I didn't understand something or something was bugging me. I like to figure out stuff by myself, so I don't ask too many questions. I think the tutorial needs to be mandatory though at first spawn or at least a choice. Remove all of the signs and replace it with voice overs and short clip of what's being discussed, then let the player tackle it themselves. That is how things are learnt best, in my opinion. Cover all topics, but don't bury them in information. Give them a choice for more information if they want it.
Thanks for sharing your experience with using the tutorial. I honestly agree that's not that bad but the placement of it is done poorly.
And reading is hard for most people ha!
I'm going to be honest that Foxhole is sometimes a hard game to want to learn by yourself especially with how much more team oriented Siege Camp keeps making the game. Like a player can't figure out battle tanks or really arty by themselves or solo in game.
I agree that I think the player should at least have to walk past the tutorial before being able to deploy. Voice overs or short clips would be awesome! There are a lot of great content creators like I Saw A Bear or Freerk that could help make those videos or voice overs.
Some great ideas! Thanks for sharing!
Lots of times i went to spawn island and shouted that i'll be organizing a training for new players in like 15min, not just shouted written it as well.
I did figure out the training when i started the game, coz i was interested in it.
When i spawned i shouted "what do i do, i'm new" and got instantly given a job.
...but i'm the type of person who manually used "Who" in WoW to find party members for dungeons, i'm not afraid to interact with others online.
Nice! We may need that for the new update this week!
I'm going to be trying to help as many new players as I can.
I still don't understand why map shows green vs blue, but player tags are green vs red
c'mon, if you decided on faction colors - stick with them!
lol! Red is jus the classic enemy color in most games I guess.
But I understand what you mean ha
I remember when i first started the game i spawned next to a guy who was doing tutorials for new people, he walked like 5 of us newbies through the training courses and until this day i didn't realize how needed that was, I prolly wouln't play so much if it wasn't for that OCdt.
This is a similar thing that happened to me! Except I made it to the battlefield so he gathered us all up for real life fight ha. Then we all got scattered and lost.
Thanks for sharing this story! Really awesome to hear these!
Basically all games, tarkov, DayZ, DCS, Squad are games that you will learn from other players
Hell Let Loose also has a sorely lacking tutorial that doesn't explain core concepts, and information is primarily gathered and disseminated by the player base.
Is the community in Hell Let Loose pretty positive and helpful? Or can they be really toxic? I haven't heard much about the community honestly.
@@RobertLovesGames Most people are positive and helpful, but there are bad seeds (such as myself) who are quite jaded from hearing the same questions over and over again - or the same misunderstandings regarding game mechanics. In the competitive community (which is quite small) game mechanics are tightly guarded secrets, as is the science/research used to derive those game mechanics. In public lobbies, nothing is secret, but very few people are asking the "right questions". Since HLL is a very very aggressive game balanced on a knife's edge, knowing exactly what is "winning the game" is an exercise in abstract thought at the very least.
I tell alot of new people on reddit hangout in a logi town, someone will be by to kidnap you. I got kidnapped in a logi town my second night playing. Dude showed my the roped and we hung out all night. I helped him run stuff for his regiment. Didn't get an invite to their regiment but git invited to a different one the next day. Great bunch of guys and I try ny best to pay it forwards when I can
Exactly! Logi towns always have people that will grab you and teach you as long as you help them gather some material as well ha.
Thanks for sharing your experience! Cheers!
When I first got the game, I went to a random place and started fighting as an infantry with a rifle. I figured out a little bit.
About 30-40 minutes into the fighting someone realized I was new and decided to take me to the rear and teach me on how to do Logistics. It was quite fun and we spent about an Hour running Logi together.
I want to encounter a new player so I can give them a similar experience.
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing that story! Always love to hear about those.
Hope you find that new player to help soon!
Cheers!
I always thought instead of having a tutorial, there could be a unique spawn point in the home isle where players who just got the game go, an poeple who want to teach can go there as well.
That would be really cool! I like this idea!
I had interested experience for my first few days playing the game where I eventually ended up digging trenches after couple fights I wanted to build a little bunker to protect my allies from the mortars but I didn’t know how to add a door, I looked up a video about a guide to a bunker and believing that you needed assembly rig to build a door went through the effort in building one and gathering the resource’s to upgrade the one bunker, as my ally continue fighting I tried bringing the rig and build the base till one of them notice what I was doing and decided to build a large bunker gathering tons of players to help out the project currently it has multiple artillery and a large area for the soldiers to spawn built along the hill
That's crazy! Thanks for sharing your experience with this! Cheers!
good vid for new players. I suppose I am a special kind of gamer that spent 4.6k hrs no mic solo and still enjoy the game. I went through the tutorial, youtube vids then enjoyed combat especially last stands before getting into the nitty gritty logi and building stuff. havnt gotten into facilities stuff yet and i dont think naval stuff is for me unless i load or bucket water. I do agree tutorial needs a big revamp. salute to those that stay on home island to train new recruits o7. comment for algorithm.
Thanks for the kind words and thanks for sharing your perspective! I think it's really important to share the perspective that you can still enjoy this game without a mic and solo. Feel like a lot of players think they can't. So keep talking about that as much as you can if you get a chance!
I plan on being around home island and back logi hexes during start of new update war to teach new players! Sure there will be some others. Cheers!
I remembered the first time get scrap from mine with a guy with flatbed. I asked to join and he helped me to understand the logic. Actually I think this is good not just because human interaction, but it is kind a puzzle. You have to search to learn something new. I never needed a tutorial.
It's a unique experience for sure. And it really depends on who you run into in game as well. Some players run into grouchy toxic players and end up quitting and some run into super nice players and never quit. So that is a factor as well.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this!
I dont think Ive ever played a game with such a welcoming community.
Love to hear it! Thanks for sharing that!
On the topic of games in which players teaches better than the game itself:
-Warframe: this is one of the best examples, while there IS a tutorial in-game, the game itself is so massive in term of content variety that it's only able to teach you the very basic stuff. However if you asks for help in chat, you will get a good bunch of people whispering you and send you an invite to their squad so they can teach you the game better.
-Guild Wars 2: While the tutorial in-game are actually pretty decent, getting to learn the game from somebody else helps a ton, especially for Endgame stuff where tutorial are kept at a minimum. The game has arguably one of the nicest communities in all of gaming, people are always super pumped to teach new players about the ins and out of the game and since it is very casual friendly in nature, it's much easier to explain as well.
-Final Fantasy 14: Like Guild Wars 2, that game has pretty decent tutorial, however it is VERY text heavy and the game itself filled to the brim with different systems that takes a decent bit of time to learn on top of the many, MANY different raids and dungeons.
But THAT is when the other players comes in. The FF14 playerbase is argubaly THE nicest community in all of gaming, people in that game often have the patience of a literal saint and will teach you about Mechanics for hours and hours on end if they have to. And if, for one reason or another, you happen to run into a toxic prick, the people in-game will literally get together to tell that person to stop being a prick.
I've seen a lot of people mention these! I played FF14 and got lost right away. I should have asked for help and I probably would have had a better time with that game.
This is basically what happens in Foxhole as well! People normally dogpile on the toxic a hole.
Thanks for sharing this really appreciate it!
I'm an example warden
LOL!
As much as the foxhole in game tutorial sucks, its honestly has the best "social" tutorial in any MMO I've every played blind. Besides Foxhole, my other main addiction is Sea of Thieves, another MMO, which also has a TERRIBLE tutorial and even worse no real safe zone. So the moment the player learns how to press WSAD and sail their boat, they get thrown at krakens, evil skeletons, ghosts shooting phantom cannonballs, etc etc. Very Overwhelming. But unlike foxhole which has an AMAZING "social tutorial"... Sea of Thieves has polar opposite, the worst thing you can encounter is another player because 90% of the time, will just attack your ship, spawncamp you, call you names, tell you get ♋ and ultimately make you uninstall.
So well done Siege Camp for actually inadvertently making a good system vs Rare's shitty one 😂
I agree that it's the best social tutorial! And I've played a ton of SoT and still play from time to time so I get that ha.
Siege Camp has done a good job with having an organic mentoring system. Rare needs a mentoring system with some incentives or something ha. Like being able to give other players commends or something ha.
Thanks for sharing your experience and comparing it with SoT! That was a great read!
had the same thing happen to me, went around and tried to the tutorial for an hour, refunded the game. bought it again couple weeks later on a sale and then just asked for help :) very nice community
That's great to hear! Thanks for sharing your experience with this!
Cheers!
I think this should be how most people learn. Since it’s a fully active social world. In the real world, this is how we learn. 🤷🏼♂️🤣 not only is it a way to learn how to play the game, it’s also a way to learn how social structure is KEY.
Agreed! This game can be very social if you let it be.
Thanks for your input on this! Cheers!
I look into the games I buy so I already had alot of knowledge on how to play. Soo much so that the first clan I wanted to join kicked me out for knowing too much (Suspected I was an alt). But foxhole's tutorial is definitely lacking, in my first hour I was just disorientated trying to look where the the tutorial areas were. Did the tutorial, didn't learn much. My best friend as a new logi player was definitely the foxhole wiki. Its a great collection of all the stats and requirements of everything. Warden Navy was also helpful for all my new player questions.
Oh dang that really stinks the first clan kicked you out! Some people are way to paranoid about alts in this game. Sorry that happened to you.
Thanks for sharing your experience with the tutorial system! Appreciate it!
A game that gave me the same feeling was WII Online. Loved it
Nice! I’ve never played that before!
Space Station 13 can be very different from server to server (conversions from a space station game to a Fallout game exist), but generally a lot of servers have a dedicated role called mentors where players can ask any sort of question about the game and any online mentors can respond. It's a neat system and can be vital as SS13 is a very complicated confusing game at first.
Holy shit yacobo?! What are the odds, also do not reveal the damn spessman game or we'll get another TH-camr tide!
Alright I tried to look this game up and still have no idea what's about lol
@@RobertLovesGames good, please keep it that way, we cant afford to get swamped with too many new players at once
@@RobertLovesGames the extremely simplified and generalized explanation is you have a job like engineer, doctor, or something and rounds almost always have some usually player controlled antagonist doing some shenanigans that inevitably causes chaos. The fact that I have to generalize so much is why mentors are so valuable.
It would all be fine, if it was easy to host a pub squad and new players were dumped into it. If we the community cared to host pub squads.
I will say, however, there is not a great deal of help if someone wants to learn tank. And I’ve seen people literally blown off when asking about that.
I did put in a bit of time myself teaching a little bit of transport logi, crane operating etc. to a new guy last week, just organically…you’re making me feel bad a bit, I didn’t do a full tutorial on how to print at the factory, which was kinda what he wanted
Second edit:
Gotta say using voice is very much necessary just because…you can’t type and do things at the same time like you can in RuneScape etc. not particularly good news for…people who might sound like a pretty girl and understandably want to stay incognito-we have some inclusivity problems. But that’s for another video-
You see kind of new player squads during update wars sometimes. Really depends on the hex and region. I know big logi clans normally have a squad open for training new players. So hopefully that's the case for this next update war. And honestly hopefully it's only one shard.
Tanking is a little bit more touchy with some people. I tell people if they want to learn tanking they need to wait until like day 15+ in a war and find their own tank and supply their own tank and then they can find someone to help them learn. Most of the time other players don't want to waste their tank on new player. Some will though.
Sorry for making you feel bad! Sometimes I can't teach new people everything either! I just don't have the time unfortunately. I don't think you should feel bad about it. Sounds like you were still being really helpful which is great!
I don't know if voice is necessary but it's strongly suggested. I know people that only type that can do basically everything.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this and your story about helping a new player! Appreciate it!
@@RobertLovesGames It is for randoms, that it. Even if you have like 1h in game, but at least got the basics, the clanmen are more then willing to teach you the stuff on go...which is both good and bad, as it is effectively creating society "layers", with them being somewhat prejudice about another layers.
Im in charge of a small regi and the fact that ppl teach ppl is really cool but i would love if/when the devs updated the tutorial they asked for the content of it too be designed by the FMs like Flashwhite and stuff.
They have surely taught hundreds if not more, and then both factions would get better habits and Colonial and Warden players would come into the game with different but effective training.
That would be really cool! Get all the FMs together to make a tutorial system. I like it!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this!
had a similar experience in DCS where i was tought the f18 by another player cuz he needed help with a bombing run
That's great! Thanks for sharing that!
