I remember hearing that in the Japanese version, the wish was for a pair of Bulma's panties specifically, but when I found it in japanese, the subtitles said just any girl's panties. I'm Dutch, so the clips with the subtitles as some of the dvd's are from my country. And I must admit, I never have been a DBZ fan. But after seeing this I'm seriously confused how DBZ got ever big in the Netherland. Jesus Christ, how can my non-anime fans friends have font memoirs of this show. This dub is a mess. It does explain though why back when it aired, I found the storyline confusing and why I remembered some of the names wrong, which I now know I remember right. And now I need to apologise to my mom. She always wanted me to shut down the tv when this show came on. And know I get why.
I love how it takes a third of the video to actually get to the movie in question. No, seriously, I honestly love that. I really like how Phelous shows us the production history and environment behind silly things like this. I really like learning the how and why, in addition to pointing and laughing at the results. Videos like this are fascinating to me, and I keep coming back to them for a reason.
In the English dub I watched as a kid they changed the word Panties to "The most comfortable pair of underwear!" I wondered why Oolong went on to wear them only on his head.

Basically, Bulma is the result of a 30 year old Toriyama not knowing how English lettering works, and Blooma is not only right, it fits better with her family being named after undergarments. “Bloomers”. I still call her Bulma tho.

Ah, the Big Green dub, the most infamous of bad dubs of anime alongside the 4Kids dub of One Piece. Goku is now Superman fused with Yugi, Krillin is now Ash Ketchum, and Bulma is now Janine Melnitz. Though of all the Big Green dubbed movies, the third movie is the most infamous of the bunch, having the "Let that child alone!" and "giant gorilla" lines.
This is much worst than 4kids. 4kids had some good voice actors working on heavily censored shows. This just bad all the way around voice acting,editing,scripting and directing.

Wow, I feel really sorry for the butchering of this series' dubbing. Here in Latinamerica the mexican dub is legendary and their voice actors are so beloved that the Dragon Ball Evolution distributor decided to dub the movie with their voices (even though they clearly didn't match the young actors), and a lot of people went to see it just because of the original cast making the voices.
Alas, the initial Saban Funimation Dub was done with translated Mexican scripts. Apparently despite Mexico being famous for playing their translations pretty direct from the original Japanese more than a few things were lost in translation.
I'm a little disappointed you didn't go for the Dead Zone (which has the best name change ever, In Pursuit of Garlic) with God and Garlic Jr speedreading their lines. Seriously, they manage to fit whole paragraphs worth of lines in a breath, I was afraid one of them was going to faint and fall over onto the mike. (Also, "Good Lord it's God!") But yeah, Big Green dub is a fountain of memes. Equaling, if not eclipsing, the Speedy Dub.

Goku's probably got the spottiest employment record of any character who isn't outright unemployed in all of anime, with them unable to keep it straight how he gets what money he does have. I remember seeing once that he's a farmer, which I thought was the Mandela Effect until Team Fourstar and Death Battle both mentioned it, so it's just the English versions answering it with "don't ask questions." And he doesn't make much as a farmer, a lot of his money is made through investing his tournament winnings (which Bulma probably helps with), and the Ox King giving them some when it's tight.
The horrible dubbing just makes you appreciate the show's original dubbing a lot more! But this dubbing is still hilarious! On the same level as Transformers Headmasters.
Among my favorite things about this dub is the thought that the nameless Namekian's ship-password would've been "Big Green." EDIT: Just realized I have this on VHS! Found it in a fleamarket for 10 cents a couple years ago, but only now I realized the treasure I possessed.. Happy to say the glory of Big Green made it all the way here to Finland. The tape cover even says "audio in Japanese" like as some kind of a cherry of ineptitude on top of the whole mess, but once I pressed play and the characters were talking about "crystal balls" in English. :P

In Italy, he is simply called Junior, because his father was called Al Satan, aka Demon King Piccolo. That name was also first used for the Ox King before Mediaset realized "oh fuck, that's not the same guy!", so they call the Ox King to just Giumaoh to avoid confusion.

I'm still so glad that I grew up with American programming despite living in Canada; because when I got into Dragonball Z pretty heavily, I didn't need to deal with the confusing voice swaps. It personally really threw me off when I tried watching the series at a friend's place on YTV, and asked what happened with the voices. I was shocked when they would tell me that it had been like that for a good while and they kind of looked at me like I was from another planet when I said the DBZ I had been watching this whole time had a very different voice cast in turn. I learned about the mess of the dub for Canadian audiences regarding Ocean Studios and the like shortly after. But at least now I know where the whole Big Green fiasco came from. XD; I had always wondered that, tbh.

Wasn't only Goku and Piccolo's VA the only who reprised their roles for the mexican dub of Evolution?
Alas, the initial Saban Funimation Dub was done with translated Mexican scripts. Apparently despite Mexico being famous for playing their translations pretty direct from the original Japanese more than a few things were lost in translation.
Im not even surprised about that. Stuff like DBZ, GTA, Street Fighter, and even King of Fighters is super popular down there.
I'm a little disappointed you didn't go for the Dead Zone (which has the best name change ever, In Pursuit of Garlic) with God and Garlic Jr speedreading their lines. Seriously, they manage to fit whole paragraphs worth of lines in a breath, I was afraid one of them was going to faint and fall over onto the mike. (Also, "Good Lord it's God!")
But yeah, Big Green dub is a fountain of memes. Equaling, if not eclipsing, the Speedy Dub.

Uh-Huh... Goku's probably got the spottiest employment record of any character who isn't outright unemployed in all of anime, with them unable to keep it straight how he gets what money he does have. I remember seeing once that he's a farmer, which I thought was the Mandela Effect until Team Fourstar and Death Battle both mentioned it, so it's just the English versions answering it with "don't ask questions." And he doesn't make much as a farmer, a lot of his money is made through investing his tournament winnings (which Bulma probably helps with), and the Ox King giving them some when it's tight.

Among my favorite things about this dub is the thought that the nameless Namekian's ship-password would've been "Big Green."
EDIT: Just realized I have this on VHS! Found it in a fleamarket for 10 cents a couple years ago, but only now I realized the treasure I possessed.. Happy to say the glory of Big Green made it all the way here to Finland. The tape cover even says "audio in Japanese" like as some kind of a cherry of ineptitude on top of the whole mess, but once I pressed play and the characters were talking about "crystal balls" in English. :P
In the Polish translation of Dragonball, Piccolo was actually called "Satan Little Heart" ("Szatan Serduszko").

@@MissMedeiros Heh, it's because the Polish version was actually based on the French one. One of the funniest Polish translations has to also be the translation of the street boxer Pete Bull Pete to "Maurycy", literally just the Polish equivalent of the name "Maurice".
In Italy, he is simply called Junior, because his father was called Al Satan, aka Demon King Piccolo. That name was also first used for the Ox King before Mediaset realized "oh fuck, that's not the same guy!", so they call the Ox King to just Giumaoh to avoid confusion.

I'm still so glad that I grew up with American programming despite living in Canada; because when I got into Dragonball Z pretty heavily, I didn't need to deal with the confusing voice swaps. It personally really threw me off when I tried watching the series at a friend's place on YTV, and asked what happened with the voices. I was shocked when they would tell me that it had been like that for a good while and they kind of looked at me like I was from another planet when I said the DBZ I had been watching this whole time had a very different voice cast in turn. I learned about the mess of the dub for Canadian audiences regarding Ocean Studios and the like shortly after.
But at least now I know where the whole Big Green fiasco came from. XD; I had always wondered that, tbh.
