Optoma GT1080 DLP Projector Repair / Light Tunnel Adjustment

  • This is a viewer sent in projector that the owner had almost gotten 100%. The light tunnel proved a bit more hassle than was reasonable so it was sent to me. Always smart to do what you can, but real smarts is knowing when to talk to someone who might know more.
    The light tunnel was removed from the optical assembly and I re-bent the spring that provides the resistance for the adjustment screws. A good tip is to keep track of what direction and what side was facing out. Most tunnels like to sit one way. This one has a small tab on the metal frame that is pushed on by one of the spring tabs. If that is the wrong way, it will cause geometry issues.
    Another bit of info. I finally paid cognizant attention to what screw did what with the image. Being that its on an angle and wrapped around optically, the screw pointing towards the front of the projector is the Up/Down adjustment. The screw pointing towards the back is the Right/Left. I suspect this applies to most DLP projectors or at least models that have the lamp and lens in the same arrangement to each other.
    Tightening the front screw lowered the light, tightening the back screw, pushed it to the right.
    Some of the screws seemed to have ran away, but I keep all the screws from stuff I take apart to scrap. I was able to find some screws that worked well and re-assembled it all easily.
    If you need a lamp for one of these, you can get it here. Use YT50 at checkout for 5% off. www.purelandsupply.com/optoma...

    Interesting enough, I have the same projector, I'm having issues with. The last time it ran, it gave no indications of any problem. Currently, it doesn't completely start up. The blue led light comes on with the fan, for about 3 seconds, then the red light comes on, and the the fan stops after another 3 or 4 seconds, with the red led light still on only. It repeats this cycle about 4 times, then stops with the red led light on. The projection light never comes on. It's like its stuck in the startup. I swapped the bulb with an old bulb, that I knew still worked, but the same thing happens. The inside of the projector is very clean. We use this projector daily, and if hangs from the ceiling. Any ideas?

    Frank, D o you think that if a projector was dropped(Epson 3LCD), the lcds could have shifted? They should be glued, and shouldn't move, right? I'm wondering, what else can cause bad convergence?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      well yes and no. They have to be exactly in the same place. A movement of less than a millimeter can affect the convergence. The geometry from the lens to the prism to the panels all the way back to the lamp needs to be the same. I still think its a distance/space thing from the lens to the LCD prism cube. Maybe you can shim the lens closer or further to see if it changes in a positive way?
      I really tend to stay away from LCD projectors though so I may be wrong. The lack of service info and parts as well as the effort required ends up costing me more time than it is worth. Electronic issues I will deal with but bad polarizers, damaged LCD panels, I don't touch them. I am sure there are folks who understand them better than me who may think its silly that I dont work on them, but my history of success with LCD is pretty low in comparison to DLP. DLP just seems easier to deal with in general. At least for me and the projectors that I end up seeing.

      @19mati67 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FixitFrank Thanks Frank. I will try and see if there is any change. I agree with you about DLP vs 3LCD. 3LCD is very complicated.

    Rule of thumb, lamps BL-FU would have a uhp Philips lamp in it and BL-FP will have a P-VIP Osram lamp in it. Gt1080e if I'm not mistaken should have an osram lamp in it. Part numbers: SP.8VH01GC01 / SP.73701GC01 / BL-FP190D / BL-FP190E These are all the same thing. Going by experience dust rarely penetrates into Optoma's optical parts but Benq projectors gather more dust than a vacuum cleaner. It never occured to me to remove the keyboard from the top cover. Good idea. Everytime I do this kind of adjustment I always have some pink on the image that I can't get rid.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what's in there. I just misspoke. The link in the description points to the lamp assembly with the osram. However there is a uhp that has the same specs and is used in the BL-FU1195B/C. BL-FS was for the older Phoenix lamp assemblies.

    • @chessguru900
      @chessguru900 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FixitFrank Correct. Example BL-FS180C will have a shp phoenix lamp in it.

    I just bought the optoma uhd35 and after 1 week the light tunnel broke and gave me a brownish/yellow line at the far right border. Had to bring it back for repairs. How can you avoid this? Or was it just bad luck/

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't stress it too much. It was probably a manufacturing defect. Light tunnels rarely fail on their own. If a lamp is misaligned it could overheat and melt part of it but that's rare. I bet yours had a tiny crack from manufacturing and the heat finally popped the glass. As long as you keep the airflow sufficient I don't think you'll run into future problems as long as it was repaired properly the first time.

      In theory yes, but the cost may be too high. You could email my parts contact in China to see if they have one. It might be cheaper and faster. Gydz@timeprojectorlamp.com. You want a full optic block with the lcds and polarizers as one unit. In the meantime I will see what shipping the parts would cost. If you want to email me it's listed on the about page.

    hi i have epson eh-tw 9000 projector.There is a vertical line on the device that we can call 1 pink or purple color.Thinking it might be from lcd panels, I removed and installed the lcd panels one by one and then when I removed the green lcd panel, the vertical color line on the screen disappeared.What is the solution to this problem. More than 10 people on avsforum.com have the same problem as me. Someone wrote there why do not you ask fixitfrank? I wanted to find it on youtube and write it.Do you need to change the green lcd panel. Or is it a problem to be solved by removing the motherboard and intervening in the part where the lcd panels go. In short, can you help me solve this problem. So you can help many users in the forum.

      Honestly I am not sure. I have a hard time repairing Epson projectors. Epson is very diligent in keeping repair info close to their own repair centers. LCD projectors in general have proven difficult for me to repair. Mostly due to the lack of parts available and definitely from the lack of service info. Most DLP Projectors follow the same general design and theory. I can use the service manual from a BenQ for some parts of a ViewSonic and vice versa.
      In your situation, I suspect the issue is the LCD panel itself. They use a row/column configuration for the pixels and I suspect you lost a column connection from where the flat flex connects to the glass. The problem I have had with replacing LCD's is alignment. Being able to align them after install is very difficult. I understand the factory repair centers use special jigs and cables to run the projector with the mainboard removed. The only success I have had is replacing the entire optical block(all 3 LCDs with the prism as one unit). Finding those is difficult though and they tend to be expensive. I have had good luck repairing most electronic issues with LCD projectors, but very poor results with repairing optical issues.
      In your situation, I would try and find a used projector with a bad power supply or bad mainboard and swap the entire optical module with the LCDS and prism. You may have to tweak the polarizer position but that is much easier than trying to align just one LCD panel.
      You have given me an idea that I should try and make a video about why I have such a hard time with LCD projectors. Maybe someone who is better with them can offer some pointers and advice? I am far from an expert. I have learned all of this as I go and from reading service manuals and talking to other techs. Just in the past year I have learned quite a bit that I did not know 2 years ago. Maybe I should try LCDs again...
