What did we do all that time without such quality content? 😅 Thanks, Thijs, this this top notch stuff. Selecting valid comments, analysing, opining, and getting us all to think about it. Gold! 👏🏻
Thanks for the video Thijs! I think you mentioned you have a few friends in China - what are they saying about how they use Taobao/Tmall vs competitors like PDD and JD, and what do they see other consumers in China using? I think a video of thoughts from someone on the ground in China on what the competitive landscape for e-commerce looks like would be helpful in determining if Alibaba continues to have a strong moat in the e-commerce areas it plays in, or if PDD and JD are taking significant long-term market share away from them. Thanks!
Hey Thijs leuk dat je terug bent, ik had je informatieve videos gemist. 2023 is nogal een bewogen jaar voor bedrijven geweest nieuwsgierig naar jouw mening over wbd.
Very excited you are back making quality videos! Was looking forward to your perspective on the market for quite a while now. Thanks for your first take on baba and looking forward to all the future videos.
I would love to see a video on your Coupang purchase and an update on Sea Ltd would be nice. Both are finally profitable. It's really amazing to have you back. Really glad to see you!
Based on the latest quarterly report question answer session no one is getting shares of Alibaba Cloud, it will be paid as a cash dividend. Alex Yao from JP Morgan: "In the press release, the wording used in relation to the cloud business spin-off was “a full spin-off via a stock dividend distribution”. Does that mean that the Alibaba Group will return the value of its equity in Alibaba Cloud to the existing shareholders by way of a dividend distribution, and we will not hold any shares in the cloud business?" Toby Xu from Alibaba: "Yes, your overall understanding is correct." Seems pretty clear but this was translated to English... where did you read that the dividend would be actual stock distribution?
The next question from Gary Yu of Morgan Stanley seemed to be pushing back on the notion of cash distribution, "My first question is about the full spin-off of Alibaba Cloud. You said earlier that this will be accomplished by way of a dividend distribution. But if Alibaba’s shareholders were to directly hold shares in Alibaba Cloud instead, would they not also be relatively liquid given that the transaction will include an IPO?" Toby Xu response reads like a bit of back tracking, "In respect of the spin-off of the cloud business, there will certainly be a range of specific issues that we need to take into consideration. What I can share at this point is that we will take all of these details into consideration in working out the plan, in order to address the concerns of investors, including, as Daniel said, around taxation, and ultimately ensure shareholder return."
Thanks so much for your elaborate comment. During the earnings call sometimes some confusion occurs due to the two (very different) languages. Having that said, there is no reason to believe that it will be a cash dividend. The quarterly release very clearly states that it will be done through a stock dividend. The questions that you mention here are slightly confusion, but in my opinion do not speak against a stock dividend. The wording is very clear in the quarterly earnings release as well, so I would not doubt it.
@@ThijsNijenhuis Seemed like the analysts were looking for confirmation that stock dividend was interpreted to mean the same thing in English as it does in Mandarin. I was surprised by the answer as it was asked twice and was asked in mandarin.
Hi, do you know if I have some ADRs in eToro they will give me cash? I know I can buy the HK shares with the money but maybe they can give you the new shares in HK. Thanks.
You'll likely receive a cash dividend. The time between receival of your cash and the first trading day of Alibaba Cloud in Hong Kong will be a period in which your cash does not work for you, whilst Alibaba Cloud is already trading and either plummeting or climbing. Until you have the opportunity to buy back your piece with the cash, you might be looking at higher prices. A dividend is always a realized profit. You can't lose money on receiving a dividend.

Conflict escalation currently. If we get de-escalation these fly. If RFK Jr. gets the nomination I'd say China flies.
Thank you! You are the first creator who answer for my question in such way. Your video helps me a lot.

Are you from South Africa or from the UK? I’m Trying to guess your accent.
When is the latest you can hold baba to qualify for stock dividend
Is a BABA Stock Spinoff Taxable? Is a Spinoff Considered a Dividend?
Thanks for sharing Thijs. The question is, when will Mr Market wake up to all this reality
You wanna tell me I will be forced to realize the loss if my broker doesn't provide access to the Hongkong Stock Exchange???

You are with the wrong broker if you can't access the Hing Kong exchange. You can easily transfer your account to Interactive Brokers.

Even with buybacks isn't the share count going up because of stock based compensation?
no its going down
@@TheMightyAbs I did see last few quarters it going down, but in the past went up due to stock based compensation, thanks
What’s going to happen to long term call options of baba? Is the stock price going to drop after the dividend? How does it work?
why are you buying options if you don't know how the market works
