    I know the hairstyle was frustrating for you, but I think you did a perfect job with your hair being straight! Loved this look!!

    Very good. The cap she wore is actually very easy to make. It is a stiffened circle of lawn or batiste folded in half on the curved side sew it to a beaded wire for support. lace can be added to this or not depending on how simple. next fold the wire for the point and curve down to form 'wings' the the flat edge is gathered in tightly. This was pinned to her coiffure. She was fun to research.

    For the small curls, I wrap the hair around my finger or a straw, hit it with some hairspray… And let it dry
    No matter what hairstyle you seem to do… You always look amazing 👏🏼👏🏼

    Great video, thanks. Her "porcelain white skin" could possibly have been down to the white lead paste that women of that era put on their faces like we use primer.....to smooth out the wrinkles, and fill them in. This often resulted in skin cancer as their skin was eaten away, and they hide away.

    Wonderful!! I would absolutely love to see Isabella of Angoulême or her mother-in-law Eleanor of Aquitaine! Also Nefertari, Nell Gwynn, Elizabeth of York, and Elizabeth Woodville. I agree with others that Helen of Troy would be great, even though she's not described in the Iliad in any detail. Still it may be a fun opportunity to do some underrepresented Late Bronze Age Mycenaean hair and makeup :)

    I never knew that about white being the color of mourning back then :o Awesome information, as always :D

    • @brookiki
      @brookiki 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Chelsea Volkina It made a brief comeback in the 1930's. Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother) was supposed to visit Paris in 1938 to solidify the relationship between France and England, but her mother died five days before the trip. The trip was delayed for three weeks, but her planned wardrobe wasn't appropriate due to mourning and black wasn't a good choice for both political and practical reasons. (It would have been too hot for July and a queen in black didn't really suit the message they were trying to convey.). Her designer remembered that the French Queens wore white for mourning until the 17th century and that Queen Victoria had requested an all white funeral, so he created a white wardrobe for her that became fairly iconic.

    To get those tiny curls you talked about, you're going to take a square of one ply toilet paper (or tissue paper, but this does not hold as well) and cut it into quarters. You will take each little square and roll it onto itself. Then, prep the hair with setting lotion and water and by creating a part down the middle of your head. Taking the tiniest strand possible from the front top of your head, roll the hair onto the toilet paper as if it was a normal hair curler. Pin both ends together. It is possible (and more authentic) not to pin it, but for me personally it did not stay without the use of the pin. Do this to all of the areas that you desire to be curled. You'll want to cut out l o t s of these little squares ahead of time, and be spraying more setting lotion into each strand that you wrap. Wrap a scarf around the head to protect it while you sleep, and in the morning unwrap each 'curler'. This takes a long, long time to do (four hours just for the front half of my head) and lots of practice, but the effects are so satisfying. The curl is uber tiny and could probably stay that way for a couple months. Hope this is useful info!

    Fantastic video that shows the 1559 look!
    May I please suggest a Regency era beauty?
    Most famous is Empress Josephine, but others include Emma Hamilton (mistress of Horatio Nelson), Caroline Lamb, Princess Charlotte of Wales... I listed a lot of them on last week's beauty beacon video, and yet couldn't cut and paste them to the comments section:(

    • @isabellis8
      @isabellis8 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, what a great idea! I love that era. Emma Hamilton and Caroline Lamb were both wery beautiful, and Empress Josephine is one og my fav queens/empresses:-)

      +Noblebird02 The one I had forgotten was Madam Recamier.... When we think regency era, it's probably a painting of Madam Recamier that we think of (though Emma Hamilton is the one on a lot of book covers)

      @isabellis8 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yes, I would love to see her look recreated, that would be fun! Her and Emma Hamilton probably have some of the most iconic looks from the regency era.

      +Pauline Rouden She cut her hair short and wasn't a beauty. Famous women of Joan of Arc's time were: Isabeau of Bavaria, Yolande of Aragon (who financed Joan of Arc and was described "The contemporary chronicler Jean Juvenal des Ursins (1433-44), Bishop of Beauvais,
      described Yolande as "the prettiest woman in the kingdom." Bourdigné,
      chronicler of the house of Anjou, says of her: "She who was said to be
      the wisest and most beautiful princess in Christendom."
      Marie of Anjou was the wife of King Charles VII of France but she covered her hair (being a respectable married woman)
      Agnes Sorel, the mistress of Charles VII was a beauty and set the fashion (for deep low square decollete gowns).
      Probably more suitable than Joan of Arc...

    • @isabellis8
      @isabellis8 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, I would love to see some strong women fighting for what they believed in like Jeanne d''Arc, and women who are known for more than just being pretty. Even though they may not be a classic beauty beacon they still put their mark on the world and inspired people everywhere to this day, and thats beauty too

      +CurlyHairedAgentEm Well there were a few women contemporary to Joan of Arc who were beautiful. Agnes Sorel comes to mind. As does Yolande of Aragon (financed Joan of Arc) Marie of Anjou (wife of King Charles VII) Most women of that era covered their hair though. Most women of Joan of Arcs era covered their hair, though Madeleine of France/Magdalena of Valois (the daughter of Charles VII) has a very cool hairstyle in her portrait.

      June 06 She was a granddaughter of Margaret Tudor, the sister of Henry VIII, and she definitely had the Tudor red hair. It probably didn't do her any favors later in life, since a lot of Catholics viewed Mary as the rightful heir to the English throne they viewed Elizabeth I as illegitimate because the Pope didn't grant Henry VIII a divorce from Catherine, meaning his marriage to Anne Boleyn wasn't valid in the eyes of Catholics. Since her mother was executed for adultery, there were questions about the paternity of Elizabeth, making her claim to the throne shaky. Her red hair helped to validate her claim since she had inherited the color from her father, Henry VIII. The fact that Mary had the same Tudor red hair to go with her claim to the throne probably didn't make Elizabeth very sympathetic to her cousin, especially since her father and grandfather had secured their own shaky claim to the English throne by executing most of the people who had equal or better claims.
