be very happy you found the woodruff key issue. it HAS to be correct. this is an area where the axle can snap and you lose your wheel.... the issue is that crack form at the woodruff and propagate till it snaps especially so when the woodruff key is incorrectly installed or someone uses a different one in the correct ones place. huge safety fault you just found. secondly the axle shafts are side specific when buying a used one. they develop a sort of memory. and can snap if put on the opposite side of the car... so if you are replacing a drivers side axle shaft with another used axle shaft.... the new used axle shaft also has to be removed from the donor car from the same drivers side. with new axle shafts this is not an issue. as for the puller... the correct one is called a churchill puller specific for triumph. they are pricey, but you can always rent one from another triumph owner who may have one. it's not always necessary, but it does the job without issues and proper.

There is a hub puller designed just for thoser hubs. The puller is sold by most parts houses and they aren't cheap.

That nut was very loose!! They are torked at 150 foot pounds or more and that was not. As for the puller the jaw type pullers bends the hub and leaving the nut on but loose it won't fly off like that. At least you are on the right path!!
