The main difference is that you can skip the display between stages in the JP version, but not in the US version. The backgrounds are animated and the ending is a little longer, but those don't matter for the TAS.
It was'nt exactly 08:51. The cutscenes have been removed, if they were'nt, the run would have taken something like 10 minutes. Beating Contra in 9 minutes is by no means possible, even when TASing(unless you are playing the arcade version...).
For anyone reading this in the future: they weren't removed, they were skipped. The Japanese version has a skippable map screen between levels instead of the US's unskippable stage name, which is why this version was used.

Seeing base 2 getting destroyed hurt me
Help. When I try to rapid fire in my own TAS, it gives the animation of firing, but no bullets come out.

There can only be 10 bullets on the screen at once...

Yes, the spread gun is OP when used like in the TAS. Shame that most people don't understand the mechanics behind it.
