There were many rocks (stony outcrops in the landscape) throughout the countryside. The people worshipped at these secret locations. If they were discovered by the invader, they would be severely punished. They continued to practice their faith worship under pain of discovery and persecution. I never meant to write all that... but the song is wonderful and this performance is itself nothing short of holy. Moving and beautiful.....
Colette Olney In Tomhaggard in Wexford the Priest was shot dead on Christmas morning in 1653. In 1999 the Parish held a memorial mass on Christmas morning to "remember" and to mark the new millennium. He intended it to a one off but people requested that it be continued! There is a ballad of Tomhaggard and I did an interview with the PP in 1999. Both on You Tube. It's powerful to be there at 8 in morning regardless of weather! They use the chalice from 1653🙏🙏
There is a Mass rock in a field two or three kilometres from my childhood home in Co. Wexford. The rock was discovered by British redcoats and rolled into the nearby river during penal times. In 1973, several local people decided to use a crane to rescue it and reinstall it in its original position in the middle of a field, three fields in from the road. Mass is celebrated there very year on the Monday evening nearest the feast of St. James, patron of the parish. I try and attend when I am home. It's a very special and sacred occasion, celebrating Mass outside in the heart of the cosmos and remembering the price our forefathers and mothers paid to live out their faith.
What a coincidence! I was looking for some Irish songs because I really like Ireland and it's culture and suddenly I found this one which was played in my country, in the Czech Republic.
Kíla, Lasairfhiona Ní Chonaola, Danú, Muireann Nic Amhlaoidh, Nell Ní Chróinín, Altan, Clannad, Liam O'Flynn, John Spillane, Niamh Parsons, Lumiere, Planxty, Niamh Ní Charra,
OMG Glen the gifts you shared since Once, as I walk your many paths and trails via TH-cam. Tonite you led me here to Liam and what a special place to be this is. I'll return again. No doubt. Blessings upon you both.
It's interesting how similar traditional music is across various semi-nomadic tribal cultures; despite instrumental and language differences you can hear melodic and vocal intonation similarities across Celtic, Native American, and Mongol musical traditions. It's sort of a beautiful reminder that if you go back far enough, we're all distantly related.
No matter that our People were displaced and forced to the four corners of the earth... The Spirit of our People lives on in Liam O Maonlai.....God blessed you Liam.... Buiochas me Dia !!!!!....
So beautiful and meaningful- we saw a Rock in Co Mayo. I love that they keep their history to remember to burdens of their ancestors. Greetings from Pennsylvania.
Keep on going back to this since I saw it a few years ago....the piano....the flow....the voice......who we are Liam....actually, words in English haven't been invented yet to describe and sadly I don't know enough Irish....but my soul does....thanks Liam
This man sings a tender song very well. I've seen Liam (and Hothouse Flowers) many times over the past twenty or so years and this is a soulful voice that never fails to raise many emotions. Fair play to Marketa and Glen too, the Swell Season project and the movie 'One' also contain many soulful and beautiful performances too.
The lyrics in both gaeilge and english Gaeilge An raibh tú ar an gcarraig? Nó an bhfaca tú féin mo ghrá? Nó an bhfaca tú gile agus finne Agus scéimh na mná? Love you brother, Míle grá duit xxxxx an tuiseal ginideach is a perfect example of how the Irish culture and Gaeilge in particular understood quantum physics long before it was recognised.

And then the priest hunters, bounty hunters, like the half mad Barry Lowe, Capt Turner, Jon Garzia, Henry Oxenard, Sean na Sagart and the hanged Edward Tyrell. Too few remember them, or their vile pay master, Lord Dawson a fine street in Dublin still named after him. Funny how we honour Dawson, time for a street name change.
+Lancashire AGoGo Our Irish names should never have been anglicised, these names were forced upon the Irish at the time, others changed their names in fear of persecution
***** I don't have an English name. Irish name are around 1000s of years before the English language.... But somehow Ó Foghladha means Foley, but in reality its doesn't it means sea pirate.
If this video could be updated with the title of the song, it's an "An raibh tú ar an gCarraig" ("Were you on the rock") Another A+ performance from Ó Maonlai.
Please I'm looking for a song that featured in this episode, I remember it from years ago but it seems it has vanished from youtube :( I can't remember the name but I remember Glen playing that song that felt almost angry. If anyone remembers at the least the name of it I'll be eternally grateful.
wow. that piano makes the song sound so broad and profound. and that vocalizing is definitely influenced by native american music. pretty cool. i love how he takes different styles of ethnic music and uses them and makes it personal. he inspires me to no end!
Sean-nos singing is at once the most loved and the most reviled, the least often heard and the least understood part of that body of music which is generally referred to as Irish Traditional Music - Anthony McCann
This is the most beautiful song i have ever heard. I would so love to find the sheet music or anything for this! P dot s - do you think he is using some sort of external reverb pedal from the piano or is his playing just really incredible?
What isthis concert??? and why was i not invited! gosh just discovered Liam, though I already love the Swell Season adn he is just beautifl. pure heaven.

possibly one of the most ethnic Gaelic song I have listened to. THanks for sharing. Is this available in Sheet Music or at least Chords and Lyrics Please?
The way it's taught in the Gaeltacht is the kid's way. The sean-nós way is the original way. (Not that there would be any piano with true sean-nós singing). But hey, muna dtaitníonn sé leat, ní thaitníonn sé leat...
My mind didn't understand a word he sang, my heart knew every note he played. Music, the language of the universe.
I feel you. Felt the same way.
))))))))
So beautiful. Celtic Soul. He is very special. Liam and Glen together wonderful, magical Captains of the Dream reality.
Liams explanation at the start is quite helpful. But yes I do agree that songs can transcend literal meaning
Mass rock up the mountain where I was today where my mum grew up. First went there as young child.
I can't stop listening to this song. This is not just a song,.. somehow it's so much more.

Such an extraordinarily talented Irish musician. Delighted to have seen him play live. This is just captivating. Proud.
I am going to the rock today. The air has cleared of wildfire smoke the temps have dropped and rain is on the horizion. I love this song.
I remember learning learning this so well in school that I dreamt the words. Truly beautiful rendition.
We can't take the faith for granted. It will go underground again. Beannacht De leat.
It's madness this doesn't have more likes, it affects my soul ❤

To hear our language is beautiful
Fantastic , what a story, what a song, a code song.
Gorgeous air.It becomes a spellbinding Mass sung by Liam.So beautiful the audience is mesmerised.Genius.
Very emotional piece yet interpreted in low-key way. Wonderful to watch and listen to. Something about piano very reminiscent of Keith Jarrett.
In one interview, Liam talks about how the playing of Jarrett mesmerized him as a youngster.
This song has haunted me since I heard it here.
So so deep more ways than one so beautiful
Could it get any more beautiful than this?? It evokes such emotion for me...
The best ever Liam O''Maonlai ⭐💫✨ x
Amazing song, so meaningful and with a direct message.
Greetings from Serbia!
He was the man today. And many other days. I hope he has a hit, again.
I came across this kind of music a short time ago and I love it..speaks to my soul....tears running down my cheek
Liama jsem zažil na živo spolu s Kateřinou García před pár dny na festivalu v Náměšťi nad oslavou a bylo to neuvěřitelně silné,až nadpozemské. ❤
Magnificent!!!

What could be better ever? Nothing.
How does this cut to the soul??!
Labhair í agus mairfidh sí !
HOly FKN crp, A God Amongst us. He truly feels it/. WoW
Although this is not being sung in the traditional sean nos style without instruments it's a lovely alternative version.
Thanks for the title! I've updated it :)

where to get more music from Liam???
please
He has released albums with his former (rock) band "The Hothouse Flowers" and probably many others.
he has music like this under his label Rian... there is a website and a Rian album. Gorgeous
probe a bit late but look up under spelling Liam O'Maonlai in English O'Manley
