Return pipe has to be always smaller than main pipes? Or could be the same diameter? Why?

At 10:44 you switch from discussing a 1017 mixing valve as in the diagram to discussing a 1070 valve but the diagram still shows 1017. Can you clarify that the additional valves are necessary when using a single 1017 as in the diagram and with no 1070's at points of use? Thanks!

For head loss calculation, you did not considered the residual pressure for the fixture unit into your calculations.
    Can you explain why ?

First of all, sorry for the delay in replying. The fixtures are not part of the recirculation system design considerations. Think of the recirculation system as being similar to a closed loop system, regarding pressure loss calculations. And the recirculation pump GPM requirements are only based on the heat loss in the supply section of the recirculation piping, not part of the required fixture flow rate for hot water. We hope this helps.

no comments ? wow... this is a good video, however, maybe i missed something, but what about the use of hot water recirc pumps and heat pump water heaters? i hear it's not a good idea and i dont understand why that is

Thank you for your words. Yours could be a good question to pose to a manufacturer of heat pumps. Another resource to check out is HeatingHelp.com. You can search on their site for an answer or post to The Wall to start a discussion. Hope this helps!

Can a water circulation pump work with a simple direct solar water heater with no indirect heat exchanger? (the tank and the solar thermal collector are together in the sun while the pressure comes from the city main).

While the idea is sound, there is a lot that goes into solar thermal applications. I would recommend watching our other webinars regarding solar along with reading issues #3 and #6 of our idronics technical journals found at this link: www.caleffi.com/usa/en-us/technical-magazine. Hope this help!

Thanks for the response, I'm proficient with solar thermal applications and read a lot about it in the past, using technical journals like this one but never figured out if it's possible for a water circulation pump to force hot water to reach the shower faster over a direct, passive, solar water heating system.
