They’re really great musicians with a lot of potential. They just ultimately choose to tone it down and create a lot of the same riffs and progressions that could be played on radio. This new song is pretty mid overall, there’s a lot better material that they’ve put out, especially as a first single. Just look at their single from their last album, perfect example. And the album cover, I gotta say is one of the more cringe inducing artwork I’ve seen this year. They’re just begging to channel their inner Beach Boys with that one.

It's mind blowing that people still don't understand that Chad (and honestly the entire band of Nickelback) play a frat-boy persona for the image and the radio plays. Just listening to their first 4 albums and then going and listening to their 5th with tell you how large of a shift they made in order to become radio famous (Simple use of chords, simple lyrics about relationships and sex, etc) and I think they just ran with it. I hated on Nickleback for years until I actually listened to some of the live/in studio stuff and they are genuinely good to great musicians. They’ve just figured out what sells and what their demographics are so I can’t blame them for riding on that. Would I rather be praised and broke or hated and rich? I think most everyone would take the latter.
What drives me crazy about Nickleback is when a new song comes on the radio and I haven’t heard it yet, I usually turn to my wife and say “what’s this? It sounds not bad” then we realize who it is once he starts singing. Then it’s ruined and my wife makes fun of me for the rest of the day.

I love seeing a more visceral reaction out of reading Nickelback lyrics than Infant Annihilator lyrics. But I will say, the speaker of a poem (or song) isn't always--or rarely is--the actual writer of it. I don't imagine Chad's that much of a sleazy hornball in the same way I don't imagine Dickie Allen actually wants to eat dead babies. I do wish he'd drop the character though. Feed the Machine actually had some solid lyrical writing to it, and I was hoping we'd stay on that path instead of heading back to Silver Side Up and Dark Horse shlock.
