Just adopted a female - mostly Kelpie - pup here in San Diego CA and although we don’t have chooks I found this video so helpful and fascinating. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! Love you informative style.

My 13 week old kelpie Bindi is very motivated by food especially if it is chicken. She sleeps inside as I believe this promotes a close bond with us and she will be trained to work with our sheep it's like any other service dog, she has an important job to do. She doesn't like our peacocks and we are yet to replenish the chook numbers who will be housed in a brand new enclosure because we have foxes and eagles to deal with. Bindi is very energetic, can go for 5 hours between pee breaks at night, is crate trained and house trained-the humans have to open the door for her. She is still learning recall and because of this she is on leash around the house as our new place currently has no secure fencing. She's a joy!

Thanks for the message. Bindi sounds charming! I agree totally with the sleeping inside aspect as well. It sounds like your peacock may be be a problem. Probably because your kelpie is worried he is prettier than her! 🤣keep up the excellent training and good luck with the foxes. Have your thought of electric poultry netting? It is expensive but a magic solution (just don't use solar chargers as they are rubbish). Keep in touch - Grant and Sofia 🥰😇

@@futurefarmers8554 No haven't yet, a large holding is how we had our chooks at the old farm - more than ample room to move with trees etc and an area specific for them to lay and roost. It's what we aim to have here also. and in time, we can free range them during the day as we did at the old farm also. Our chooks get to scratching be chooks I just don't like the mess they make on the verandahs. We had the peacock and peahen locked up for a few months as they tend to roam. They now go about free and roost in the shearing shed which can be a problem. However, I'd much rather them be here than in the reserve wreaking havoc.

Great video. Just remember not to have your dog off-leash in a public area. My neighbour the other day got fined $840 for having their dog off lead in a public area. Also, my vet said not to feed our dog ice cream due to all the dangerous additives and high sugar content that can result in pancreatitis, obesity and diabetes. Great training content.

Mareemas are very noisy in a metro area setting.
Kelpies when you get the more confident ones can do many things.
Good as a guardian and alert dog with training

I don't know if this applies to chook guardianship, but when an old school dogman was asked in an interview whether a pet APBT (APBTs having a very high prey drive) can be socialized with other pet animals such as other dogs and cats, he said that if when a pup you introduce the pet APBT to a couple of other dogs and a cat while at an age where the other dogs and cat are still senior to it, when the APBT gets bigger, even though it may end up becoming dominant, he will still keep a healthy respect for the other animals and be socialized to them. That very early exposure seems important when trying to get a dog to do be socialized to something it might otherwise prey on.

Thanks for the comment Alan, I agree 100% with your comment. Although our dog does have a significant prey drive, he does have a high regard for the chooks. It was interesting, we just came back from a four day camping trip in the bush with some friends with dogs. Our dog got along with the other dogs present - rough wrestling and playing constantly. However when we returned he adopted his usual behaviour instantly he resumed his persona of being relaxed and attentive with the birds. It was quite remarkable, such intelligence and self regulation. You are right about the early exposure imprinting acceptable behaviour on the birds. Thanks again, Grant and Sofia 😇
