    There exists a Drum Cam of Danny playing this song. It is mindboggling what the man does on the drum kit. Well worth a watch even if not as a reaction. Is is simply fantastic.

    You have to react to the drum cam for this song now! Danny Carey, Tool's drummer, will blow your mind in that vid and give you a whole new appreciation for their music.

    I believe they pronounce it "New-Mah". There's a drum cam of Danny Carey playing this song on the Vic Firth channel, well worth a watch to see "The Octopus" in action! It has 33 million views at the moment.

    Everyone is a Tool fan. Some just don't know it yet.
    I put myself on pre-order for this album. Yes, I bought the CD. 13 years from 10,000 Days left some us deprived of their genius.
    Funny fact: they launched this the same day as Taylor Swift's Lover album, and Tool absolutely dominated sales and streaming. I don't have anything against Taylor and her Swifties, but it was hilarious to see her numbers just get crushed.
    The Tool Army arrived.

    I am going to a tool concert in my hometown in a few months when they are touring through europe and I am beyond excited. The live Version of Danney Carey playing this opened my eyes to Drumming in a new way. I highly recommend you watch the Danney Carey - Pneuma live drum cam, Reaction or private. I love watching masters of their craft at work

    The drummer is a master at timing signatures. Most of their music switches between them within a song. At first, I had trouble with this band because I wasn't used to it within the metal genre. I've learned to accept it now. This song switches between 12/8, 11/8, and 10/8, with a tempo of 114 BPM. People are mostly used to 4/4.

    • @predatorkitten
      @predatorkitten 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Istg Danny's existance is a masterclass in music theory. His grasp of polyrhythmic beats is insaneeeeeeeeee

    • @beckyleavitt7808
      @beckyleavitt7808 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@predatorkitten Absolutely! He is the reason I stuck with the band. I was really turned off at first. My father was an opera singer and conductor. He would explain to me as a kid about this stuff (I'm 54). I look back now and realize how much that opened my eyes to other types of music and how technical it can be. My husband is a guitarist and he went to MIT in LA back in the day. I got to learn through him about theory and whatnot. I look for talent now more than just a specific genre (not that I listen to opera or anything but you know what I mean LMAO).

    another prime example of a great truth in our world: *the 'Tool stankface' is real, and it is universal.*
    highly recommend watching the Vic Firth drum cam of Danny Carey, just so you can *see* the polyrhythmic glory of the middle section. one of my favorite songs of all time; if you haven't listened yet, go for track three on this album, as well: Invincible.

    Great video, I love watching people discover Tool. You should totally do the Live version on this that's a Drum cam on Danny Carey (the octopus 🐙) the vic flirth video
    If you do, keep In mind Danny is 60 in the video. He also used to play basketball so he's literally like 6'8".
    Can't wait for more
    Ps. The Grudge, Maynard holds a 25 second belt 😮

    When main bass phrase comes in...
    2-3-3-3-3-2-3-3-3-3-2-3 (x4) - could be thought of as 33/8 I guess, but I don’t think anyone wants to think of a long count like that
    Then short measure when the phrase goes up in pitch
    2-3-3-3-3-3-2-3-3 (25/8)
    Then back long
    2-3-3-3-3-2-3-3-3-3-2-3 (33/8)

  • @christerfurberg6538

    But synchopation and polymetrics are two different things. Synchopation is when you place notes or stress between the beats. Polymetrics is when you play different time signatures simultaneously. Tool do both things. Plus they also use additive rhythms, where you string measures of different time signatures together in complex patterns (like this song)

    Anthony! so nice to see you finally letting yourself go in one part of the song, closing your eyes, and just becoming with the music, without going for the analysis! lol It is so difficult to not want to analyze everything you are hearing from them because it is always unexpected! haha but letting yourself go deep in their music is even better than getting to understand it at the first listening!

    Don't feel bad for missing the Tool boat. It happened to an entire generation. Basically, Tool, until they released this most recent album in 2019, didn't have ANY of their music on streaming services. No iTunes. No Spotify. No downloading their songs on digital jukeboxes. If you didn't purchase their CDs, you didn't hear Tool. All of that, coupled with a 13 year hiatus between their last 2 albums, and a lot of young people basically never heard the best band on the planet. Congrats.

  • @1982chiXu
    @1982chiXu 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The stuff you're talking about in regards to the riff going over the rest of the beat, that's very typical of Tool and especially Danny Carey's drumming, he incorporates a lot of polyrhythms and polymeters so quite often will be drumming in different time signatures to the rest of the instruments.
    You can sort of get a better example of it if you watch the official drum cam of this song (Search for - Danny Carey | "Pneuma" by Tool (LIVE IN CONCERT) - it's by Vic Firth). There are points during that song where Danny Carey is playing 4 different time signatures at the same time (each limb on a different time signature). it's why they call him the human octopus, amongst other things.
