    EDIT: Oh my goodness, a classic Sudoku app from Mark and Simon. I'M ECSTATIC! I've loved the Sandwich Sudoku app so much, and I'm beyond excited to purchase this as soon as it is live on iOS.
    I would have absolutely never gotten this without the title telling me what to look for. Extremely difficult to spot, even when you know exactly what it is, and then it still becomes difficult to figure out exactly what to do with it all. Took me 29 minutes to solve in total, but again, without the title specifically telling me to look for a Jellyfish I'd have easily been in "I give up" territory. Well done to Sam!

    Before I found your channel, I never thought I would have such a strong (positive) reaction at a sudoku puzzle. Your enthusiasm about sudoku and other puzzles really shows and it's very captivating. It really thought me to appreaciate those things (and that appreciation translates to other things in my life). Playing catch-up on old puzzles while practicing various fish. I wonder if anyone else cut straight to Phistomefel's theorem after doing the jellyfish, even though the puzzle is straightforward from that point. You find that three 1s and a 2 must be placed in the corners, along with a few other givens, and the 789 need to go into the ring. Comparing what's left eliminates candidates from several cells and speeds the process.

    I see a few comments on this video claiming that without previously knowing the Jellyfish pattern, the puzzle is not approachable. I don't think that is the case, and such a statement is usually a result of someone having an overly-rigid approach to Sudoku, where they only use certain techniques or strategies and aren't open to creative thinking. Puzzling in general, and Sudoku in particular, are fundamentally creative pursuits!
    This puzzle was designed with the intention that even someone who didn't know the Jellyfish pattern would be able to work out the first steps - although I am not claiming it is easy! The 4x4 arrangement of 1-6 is front and centre, hoping to draw your attention to it. The solitary 7, 8 and 9 are position carefully in symmetrical locations around the edge, as a way to indicate their importance. Considering those digits in conjunction with the large 1-6 block will lead you in the right direction, even if you have not previously seen a Jellyfish pattern.
    I would usually not consider a Jellyfish as a fair technique for a setter to put before a solver. But this is not just a random Jellyfish, which appears without warning in a location you would have no reason to consider. These creatures have been very carefully placed at a specific location in a way which means the clues are all designed to lead you towards it.
    What's more, it _must_ be found at the very beginning of the solve, and having been found I reward the solver's ingenuity with a puzzle that resolves itself very easily after that point. It would be unfair if after the high experienced by cracking the initial arrangement, the solver is brought down to earth again with yet more grinding, difficult progress. That's not the point at all - as Simon says, puzzling is about a conversation between the setter and the solver.

    • @72DerekB
      @72DerekB 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for the insights, and the wonderful puzzle. If Simon and Mark were looking for new content suggestions I'd love to see interviews with setters such as yourself exploring the process of creating these logic puzzles. I can imagine an algorithmic approach to creating a sudoku with a unique solution but I'm really intrigued at the notion of an intended path for the solver to discover, and how you plan and realise that while creating a puzzle.

    • @hatterson
      @hatterson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree with the idea that, if you can't spot the jellyfish, the puzzle is basically unapproachable (technically it's solvable, but you have to use a bunch of stuff that no reasonable solver would ever think of to even get started) but, as you mentioned, that's kinda the point.
      By making the Jellyfish required at the beginning of the puzzle, you force the solver to consider what the setter had planned. The overall symmetry and design of the puzzle further push the solver towards some type of fish technique. Even if you've never heard of a swordfish or jellyfish by name, if you're attempting a puzzle like this (knowing it's difficult) you should by vaguely aware of the idea that an x-wing type situation could extend beyond 2 rows/columns.
      Maybe that's enough for you to solve it without explicit knowledge of the jellyfish pattern, maybe it isn't. Either way, I think it's totally fine for a puzzle to be essentially unsolvable if you miss the trick the setter built into it, whether that's due to simply missing it or not being aware of it as a concept.

      Well, it is definitely not the case because I started watching this channel about 2 months ago and was knew to Sudoku, but intrigued and started trying them before watching each video. I'd go until I got stuck and then watch and see some amazing insight that got Simon unstuck at the same point in the puzzle I was at. I didn't even know what a jellyfish is in Sudoku, but tried as usual and this just happens to be the first one I've solved completely without referring to the video at any point. I did need to use an X-wing on 4's near the beginning and an X-wing on 6's near the end, but unless I saw and used a jellyfish without knowing it (highly unlikely), you don't need one. Sometimes I think he just goes with whatever is on hand to make progress.

    I used the presence of a 7,8 and 9 in the outer squares together with the lack of these numbers in the middle 5x5 to deduce that the outer corner 2x2 squares can not contain 7s, 8s or 9s. Because each row and column of the border of the inner 5x5 square can only have at most one 7,8 or 9 in the row/column itself and for the other rows/columns they must be in the outer squares.
    We get to place 6 as the first number like in the video, and the rest of the puzzle is straightforward after.

  • @lakarto19

    Managed to solve in 4:54 // Obviously I had a lot of help with the title of the video, since I knew to actively look for jellyfishes, which aren't too difficult to find in such a symmetrical puzzle... would have taken much longer if I had found this as part of a daily random Sudoku or something similar. Thank you for the fun puzzle and video.
    P.S. It's been a couple of months so other people may know this already; but I've only just noticed that Andrew's solver has been updated to include Gurth's symmetry in its algorithm since Sep 2019.
    Interesting, since along with the 'permutations technique' a few weeks back, Gurth's symmetry is one of the techniques introduced on this channel that just completely blew my mind and made me realize that Sudoku is a puzzle with incredible depth and mystery... Once again thanks to this channel for helping me so much with my Sudoku solving.

    Out of curiosity, I've told Andrew Stuart's solver to take it step by step and I have to say It goes straight to the jellyfish times three, and then everything after that is all basic, the most complex spot after that is the 789 triple in row 6 (or the 236 triple, which is the one it founds, but those are one and the same) and the twos in the central box eliminating a two in r8c6.

    There is an other trick to solve this puzzle! For this we need to use the symmetry where the small outer corners (size 2x2) of the grid must hold exactly the same digits as the inner ring from c33 (cell at row 3 and column 3) to c37 - c77 - c73 and back to c33. Using this symmetry-trick we know that the inner ring must contain the numbers 7, 8, 9 and one other unknown digit. This is because those three numbers are in small outer corners (7 is in the 2x2 top-left corner, 8 in the 2x2 bottom right corner and 9 in the 2x2 bottom left corner). Now we can ask the question whether the numbers 7, 8 or 9 could be the remaining unknown digit of the inner ring. The answer NO. If we place for instance a 7 in row 6 of the inner ring we know that in the center 3x3 box there must go a 7 in column 6 and therefore there is no second empty cell of the inner ring where a second 7 can go. The same applies to the numbers 8 and 9. We still do not know the missing digit in the inner ring, but it is not 7, 8 or 9. And that would rule out these numbers from all empty cells in all outer 2x2 corners. Once we realize this we can check the remaining options for those empty cells and start filling in the digits of the inner ring into the 2x2 outer boxes. Doing so we would find out that all numbers in the outer boxes could be placed except for c22 where a 3-5 pair is remaining. But having these seven digits is enough to break the puzzle open.
    In case you wonder why the symmetry logic exists, it has been beautifully explained by Simon in another video. The trick is as follows: If we compare box 1 with row 3 we know that the six numbers in c11, c12, c13, c21, c22 &c23 must be equal to the numbers form c34 to c38. Simon is calling the New-York-Times trick. The same can be done with box 3 and column 6. Therefore both small corners (c11,c12,c21,c22 and c18,c19,c28,c29) plus the extra cells c13/c23 in box1 and c38/c39 in box 3 must contain together the same digits as row c33 to c37 plus the extra cells c38/c39 in box3 and the column c47 to c77 plus the extra cells c87/c97 in box 9. We now can leave out the cells c38/c39 from both sets of cells and still both sets will contain the same digits. We than doing the New-York-Times trick again with box 9 and row 7 and adding the extra small corner (c88,c89,c98,c99) plus its extra cells c87/c97 to the small corner set and at the same time the additional row between c76 to c73 plus the extra cells c71/c72 in box 7 is added to the inner circle set. We now notice that the extra cells c78/c97 are in both sets of equal digits, which allows to remove these cells from both sets. Finally this can be done with column 3 and box 7 after which not only the cells c71/c72 are double both also cells c13/c23. This finally leads to the conclusion that the digits in center ring c33-c37-c77-c36-c33 must be equal to the digits in the four small 2x2 outer corners of the grid.

    • @3laserbeam3

      Well, there's only 9 rows and columns in the grid. there's 1 hint for 7 in there, so that leaves 8 rows and columns unknown. Spotting a jellyfish in 4 rows/columns forces the other 4 rows/columns to be a jellifish. Spotting the vertical or the horizontal one is irrelevant, since they both affect the same cells in the grid.

    Multiple times you left hanging numbers such as you marked corner 3's in the 2nd box down on the left, eliminated one of them and left the other hanging (it was your very last square to fill in for the puzzle). There were others on the right side. Had you Snyder'd the 2s in the top right box out of the gate, that would have sped things up immensely as well. With all that said, the quadruple jellyfish was brilliant. I had no clue what that meant nor could I crack this puzzle w/o it. Once you got that started for me, the rest started falling...

    So I solved it, but I'm not sure I deserve full credit on the solve. The only reason I solved it is because the undo button exists. I guess where a One went (based on snyder notation, it was a 50/50) and after a long chain of success, there wound up a collision and the puzzle broke. So I pressed undo a hundred times, and placed the 1 in the correct spot.
    When I did, that filled in all the 1s, which filled in more and more of the grid and the entire grid unwinded. (Actually, in a similar pattern to Simon)
    I technically did solve it in 40 minutes. Thanks to the programmers for including an UNDO button, so I can follow my gut.

    6:41 - no it’s not clear. A 7 can go in the entire upper row except columns 7and 9. Similarly rows 7, 8and 9. Why are you limited to looking at those 4 rows?

    • @netpilot5
      @netpilot5 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Listen carefully beginning at 5:56. Each of the four rows he highlights needs a 7 and they must go in columns 1, 2, 6, and 8 to complete those rows. Since one 7 must already be in each of those columns, there can’t be another 7 in row 1 (or any other row in those columns.)
      Beginning at 6:10, he proves it the other way around. He tries to put a 7 in row 1, column 6, and shows that would only allow three 7s in the four rows, so the 7 can’t go in row 1 (and by the same logic, columns 2, 6, or 8.)

      I buy the 'Year' books from the 'nikoli' store in Japan. They have a web presence (nikoli.com) and accept Pay Pal. The books contain many different types of Japanese pencil puzzles and these particular books have English Instructions. They sell the 2017, 2018 and 2019 editions and they cost 1000 Yen each (about £7.50) and P&P is going to add another 1000 yen to your order so you can get all 3 puzzle books posted to you for less than £30. I cannot recommend these books highly enough. If you enjoy puzzles you will adore these books. Hope this helps.

    Instead of looking at row 3, 4, 5 and 7 to find the three jellyfishes you can also look at column 3, 4, 5 and 7 and find three ADDITIONAL jellyfishes, one for 7, one for 8 and one for 9... amazing puzzle :D

    • @RandomBurfness
      @RandomBurfness 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well let's look at it this way. There is one given 7, 8, and 9 in the grid. Since there's a jellyfish on those three digits in those rows, then there must be a corresponding jellyfish in those columns because when five of the columns are "occupied" by a digit, the remaining four must then contain exactly four of that digit. As an adjacent example, if you have four of some digit and you find a swordfish on that digit, then there's a corresponding X-wing on that digit on the rows/columns that aren't part of the swordfish because then you have 4 + 3 = 7 rows/columns containing that particular digit.

    While I can appreciate the beauty of this puzzle, I'd still like to pursue other avenues to solving it than having to find a jellyfish pattern.
    Edit: I just redid this puzzle. Without watching the video. By brute forcing all candidates then spotting that the '1' candidate can be removed from r9c1 you basically end up with only singles and I solved the puzzle in 5:24. No advanced logic necessary. Frankly, the puzzle was pretty boring then.
    So yes, it's a brilliant puzzle. Your very first move is to remove a single candidate digit, and the puzzle is basically solved.
    I wouldn't have found this by solving on paper, only using a digital device made it easy to enter the candidates.

    19:10 Um, Simon, you do realize that one of those 7s in the 8th cell isn't in a jellyfish when it needs to be, right? There are both horizontal and vertical jellyfish extending from that inside square of numbers. There are a total of 6 jellyfish in this grid, one set up and down from the center square and one set left and right from the center square, if I understand jellyfish right.

    • @RandomBurfness
      @RandomBurfness 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well this is correct. If you have one of a given digit and a jellyfish on that digit, then you have a corresponding jellyfish on the same digit somewhere else.

      My dear Catflap, if you've watched and learned from Simon, this was an EASY puzzle. Using his notations, recognizing some x wings, finding a few restricted cells, I solved this in 24min. I clicked check and it was right. I screenshot and compared to his final and it was identical. So not sure what system you use, but it just needs "worked out."

    Duncan's Sudoku Solver cannot be installed in Windows 10. It needs .NET Framework 3.5 to be installed to continue loading, which is not able to be installed on a Windows 10 machine as its already there (.NET Framework 2.0 to 4.8) but the software doesn't recognise this fact during the install process and shuts down! It shows the error code: 0x80070422.
    Can you update this program to run on a Windows 10 machine by either not looking for .NET Framework to finish installing or including a mix of .NET Framework versions?

      There are many types of fishes, with the 'simple' ones Jellyfish is the biggest you can get, but there's many variations and in some you can go further.
      - On Basic, Finned, Sashimi and Siamese fishes you can only have X-Wing, Swordfish, Jellyfish
      - On Franken fishes (which can also be Finned, Sashimi or Siamese) exactly the same, except for a special Siamese called 'Double Finned Franken' that adds an extra column/row
      - Finally Mutant Fishes can go beyond the Jellyfish with Squirmbag=5, Whale=6 but these are very rare, pretty much undetectable by a human, and in many cases avoidable using easier alternatives.

    • @Wecoc1
      @Wecoc1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fun fact: The most candidates you can eliminate with a fish are 20, and you can only get that with a Basic Jellyfish.
      Here's an example, it's very satisfying to watch:

    As a notation-free solver I stared into the grid 10 minutes in vain. Then I pencil-marked everything possible, triple-checked everyting and many more times, another 20 minutes not a jack filled in. Then I noticed, a bit pissed off, the grid is somewhat symmetrical and spend about 30 minutes trying to get to work something which obviously wouldn't. Now that I know the solution I must honestly say I don't quite like puzzles which require one to know one certain trick (unspottable to me, as you can hardly spot something you're not looking for) without which they are impossible to solve.
