    Would absolutely love to see more of these advanced puzzles on your channel! I did indeed solve this differently to you- which makes it interesting. There are further normal y-wings after the one you found. Took me longer as I did end up fruitlessly hunting for fish and ultimately used a simple colouring technique. Can’t wait for the next video in your new series.

    That "extended Y-Wing" is truly awesome. I got stuck, just like you, with all those bi-values. I had to pause my solve and watch your solution. Indeed, the puzzle collapsed after that insight. I'll have to try Hodoku 2 the next time I have some extra Sudoku time.

    I thought it was fun. I've only finished 5 NYT Hard puzzles so far, 5th one was today actually. I did this one in 39:02
    which is faster than I've done any NYT. I did it by comparing the 3-4-5-6 needed in cell 2 to cell 1 and 3. I hope what
    I did wasn't just a lucky guess? Looks like I'm 4 months late on this but it came up after I finished the NYT today
    so I just did it, looks like I've got 34 more in this series so this will keep me in interesting puzzles for a while.
    Thanks Rangsk!

      To build on this now that I’ve watched, even just colouring the bivalue digits was a great tip for me. Was that a swordfish you did with box 4? I’d looooove more of these if you could swing it, but I know you can’t duplicate yourself. (Can you?)

      @@topherlobsterman6588I didn't do any swordfishes but if you provide a timestamp I can try to explain what I did. Not sure exactly what you're referencing.

    I'd happily get more of these more advanced ones to solve. The Times puzzle is nice but these lets you use your full range of techniques.

    I used a different pattern and analysis where you called out the "Y-Wing". I call that a "Bent Triple". The cells that comprise a bent triple have a total of 3 digits in 3 "connected" cells. That means that no other cell that sees all three can contain any of the digits in the bent triple components. In this case, the three "bent triple" digits are 5, 6, and 7. The cell at row 7 column 6 contains pencil marks of 678, and sees each of the three cells that comprise the bent triple. That means it can only contain an "8".
    I haven't worked the puzzle myself yet, but bent triples often unlock otherwise intractable puzzles.

    • @Rangsk
      @Rangsk  ปีที่แล้ว

      Bent triple is often just an alternate name for the y-wing.

    • @thomasstambaugh5181
      @thomasstambaugh5181 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Rangsk : Cool. I guess it's just the way I've learned to apply the pattern. If the three cells of the bent triple or y-wing are visible to a given cell, then the given cell cannot contain the digits of the bent triple or y-wing. So at 10:19 (I saw it at the same time as you while watching the video), the 6 and 7 can be removed from r7c6, leaving the 8 as its only value. I didn't know about the constraints implied by the two pincers (in this case removing 6's), that's very helpful and cool.
      BTW, scanning column 6 with fresh eyes at 12:59 shows that r7 is the only cell in c6 that contains an 8.
      This is an excellent pattern that frequently gets me unstuck in a harder-than-usual NYT sudoku.

    • @Rangsk
      @Rangsk  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think what you're saying may be inaccurate. A bent triple does not need to resolve as all three values and thus cannot eliminate all three values. See the logic I used with pivot and pincer for a proper application of the logically valid eliminations.

      @@Rangsk You're absolutely correct, I finally worked the puzzle myself.

    I found it much easier that the NYT. After using the simple techniques I had found 19 digits and them pencil marked the rest. This is probably what makes it a harder puzzle, what to attack the break it. I looked at row 8 and saw that 57 appeared three times which meant that 2 had to be partnered with them on position 6 of box 9. This gave 13 more digits. To get the rest I looked at row 6 and found the 7 in position 7 that finished the rest of the puzzle. Time of 11:04

    I've used that last technique before and got told it was an Alternating Inference Chain. It makes sense as you're inferring that a cell is one value or another. In my opinion, bifurcation is guessing that a cell is a specific value without any other context (i.e. that a cell has only two possibilities). I enjoyed this, need to get better at spotting these advanced techniques, so I would appreciate more of the same 👍

    • @Rangsk
      @Rangsk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      XY-chains are indeed a form of AIC. AICs are an extremely flexible way to describe a large number of techniques, though, so it's like saying "I've seen that square described as a polygon". It's true, but "square" (XY-chain) is more specific.

  • @whocareswho
    @whocareswho ปีที่แล้ว

    Just my thought for whatever that's worth. I would not consider it bifurcation what you did there. What you did is what you did with the y-wing. You explored both possible values and was able to remove candidates. What I did however, WAS bifurcation. I picked the 1-3 cell in r3c9 and picked randomly one of the digits and arrived at an impossibility. I was not happy with my solve but then again, I absolutely detest anything chain-like.
