The perfect example of the "good but boring" vs "bad but interesting" argument indeed, I have both and yeah, you learn to love both for different reasons.
Blaster's alt mode may not be helpful to the Autobots, but I think it perfectly reflects who he is. He's a partybringer, a friend, a fun-loving goofball who wants to bring joy, not pain. So taking the form of a device meant to entertain is perfectly in character.
The hexagon accessories with Universe 08 Blaster, based on their description in Soundwave's Cybertron toy blurb, are apparently supposed to be Cybertronian versions of Bouncing Betties. They're giant-ass bombs! EDIT: I think the majority of the Cybertron Soundwave mold's issues could have been solved by not having the nosecone as a dangly bit on his wrist. They could have incorporated it into his feet somehow, which also would have given him better feet to stand on.
@@misterbadguy7325 And the Fun Publications continuity, for that matter! He shows up in the panel where Nexus Prime performed The Shrouding to make multiverse crossovers less common.
Blockrock may be a reference to GB Blackrock, a fairly important human in the Marvel comics who had a lot of panel time along side Blaster in his story arcs.
The thing I like about the Legacy Blaster is the hand with the finger, it doubles perfectly as a relaxed trigger finger along with being able to press his chest button
It is so weird seeing a Blaster recolour on Cybertron Soundwave, it's hilarious when seeing this with an Autobot Symbol on him. It's almost like seeing if Soundwave decided to side with the Autobots and renamed himself Blaster. Storywise, that would explain it, but we all know that's not the intention of this release. lmao
The fun part is, Earthspark if bringing back Energon-style Shirt-and-Pants combination but without making them complete bricks like Crash Combiners. Now we just need an insert-to-unlock feature and maybe bring back firing missiles.
Love the little detail at 12:35 where the autobots are taken aback, purely affronted by the instantaneous appearance of Universe Blaster. Good one Thew!
fun fact as he got repainted into twincast if anyone's wondering what's with that name... it actually makes more sense in japan cause: for simple short context in japan blaster's japanese name is broadcast
I always felt that Blaster would be far more fitting as a gameboy or a “portable brick game player” with his cassette cons as different Game cartridges, and he could still rival Soundwave as 80’s things that were everywhere
Looking back it's so funny how we had multiple lines of "it's G1-inspired but still modern and full of repaints because a purely G1 nostalgia line wouldn't sell" and then at some point they were like "fuck it G1 nostalgia lines forever"
I've never had one but for whatever reason Universe Blaster feels really nostalgic to me. I think as a kid that might have been my first exposure to Blaster so it doesn't even feel that weird to me. Sometimes a dramatic clash between design and personality is just fun too
Poor Blockrock only has one appearance in fiction, in the _Recordicons_ comic strip made by David Willis and published in the Collector's Club magazine. In it, he's lonely that the other members of the Blaster and Soundwave sidekick crew won't hang around with him. Probably because he turns into a bomb.
Hey man... Blaster was the reason the distress signal was able to get out to Optimus Prime in time (during the 86 movie)... He was indispensible to the Autobot cause, even though he did transform into a brick. haha
Here's a fact smack the Hexabricks are aparently BOMBS so the DJ dude Blaster carries around a bunch of nukes that convert into either more destructive weaponry or B I R D ahhhh yes the best reprosentation of his character
I still put Titans Return Blaster at the top of my list. I know that line wasn't the most popular, but I love the idea of the headmaster being able to carry Blaster around as a boombox, set him down behind enemy lines, then transform into a fortified base until he's needed to fight, at which point he assumes his robot mode.
I do miss the dumb repaints of Uni2.0 as I got into TF's round the end of Cybertron so this, Ani & ROTF were my jam, oh & the rest of the era was great too but Uni's weird mix of new & old was great.
If you don't like using him as Blaster, I like to use my Cybertron Soundwave as Rumble, and Universe Blaster as Frenzy. That way they're stand ins for upgraded forms.

on the universe blaster the neck can actually invert the hinge and tab down into the chest i grew up with the thing and took forever to figure that out
When I was a kid in the 80s and still believed in religion, I used to pray every sunday in church for months, "Please give me Blaster." Eventually I got him as a hand-me-down, and he was disappointingly gangly. MUCH happier with the Legacy version! Great review, Thew, as always!
Love your nails this video, Thew. They are ALWAYS on point. And yeah, the hexagon chonks are all bombs. His (and by extension Soundwave's) buddies just turn into actual explosives. Like a K-class Condor but with less horrible implications
WOW. I never heard any TF reviewer so perfectly criticize AND compliment a toy SIMULTANEOUSLY. I have to go get that stealth fighter blaster now LOL --- And the new beats are soundin KILLER!
Cybertron Soundwave just annoyed me at the time, and then I thought the Blaster repaint was horribly wrong, so I never got it. I remember at the time just unscrewing the backpack wings and having a more sensible Soundwave... but still with crap hanging off his arms. Still, the hex bomb/accessory/partner gimmick was pretty cool.
Someone probably pointed this out, but the Cybertron soundwave/blaster has a double hinge that lets the head sit lower to the chest. I discovered that after owning him for years
The best thing about Kingdom Blaster is that lesser seen Hasbro beast; a spring! Yes, an actual play feature! Press a button, something happens. Amazing. A lost art.
New listings for the SS86 line suggest another Blaster repaint for 2024. Hopefully this one will have cel-shaded opaque blue plastic, as well as gunmetal grey instead of the black parts. Maybe some silver on those boombox speaker shin panels?
Back when Titans Return was a thing and I was trying to get back into collecting (because I love Headmasters and a line-wide Headmasters gimmick is my kryptonite), I really wanted the TR Blaster. I remember it being kinda special that for once, Blaster was designed first and Soundwave was the repaint. Also, I dug that TR Blaster's "base mode" looked like a concert arena, complete with a light rack. I couldn't get it because I had a lot of money problems in 2017 (missed out on Chromedome, Highbrow, and Brainstorm--I only managed to get Hardhead, and I never did get the TR Voyager Prime that was later redecoed into Octane), but I appreciated the effort. Thanks for a year of great videos, Thew. You've been sweet to us for ages, and we're proud to support you.
YES!!!!! love both these toys so much, so glad you’ve took a look at them both. Personally I like to think of Universe Blaster as his sister Karmen, if only because it lets me have a toy of Karmen in my collection.
I love your poetic usage of vernaculars, sir. I can't, unless I've been living under a rock and they've already done so, use your voice in a stop-action TH-cam collaboration or an actual cartoon or video game. Have a great New Year.
I didn't give legacy Blaster a second thought when I first saw him on shelves, but then I got him for christmas and discovered that hey, he was absolutely amazing!
Legacy Twincast was my first legacy figure and the mould has proven to be some of my favorite tf figures ever. I’m a huge blaster and twincast fan and I’m slowly making my rounds trying to get every blaster and twincast ever made.
for legacy blaster in box box mode the volume knob is on his left side and if you look closely at it, it has 11 notches around it and blaster is on max volume. so he is always tuned up to 11
I think a fun intended play feature for Kingdom Blaster is that if you attatch the rifle to any of the ports on the legs in alt-mode, you can position it to look like a radio antenna; much like core soundwave
I couldn't bring myself to buy Kingdom/Legacy Blaster because I already have UniqueToys Soundmixer, who's of the same scale and on the same level of articulation that already does everything the Kingdom/Legacy one can do aside from the tapes. Ironically if Kingdom/Legacy Blaster had functional wrist swivels that might have tipped the odds in its favor, but oh well. SS86 is going to reissue it with a supposidely non-translucent Eject so maybe third time's the charm?
"What even IS a cassette, anyway?" Oh shut up, modern media children. 80s nostalgia will never go away, you've seen movies from the 80s and 90s, you don't have to have actually USED a cassette to know what one is anymore than one of us old geezers needs to have used a rotary phone to know what IT is.
